Manipulation—the act that stripped me of my innocence. Corruption—the deed that molded the monster I've become. Persecution—the awakening of the fractured man who was only a pawn in a sick and twisted game.
When I lost my family after taking the fall for Drew Varney and his myriad of scandals, I frickin’ hit rock bottom. Without a shadow of hope within these desolate prison walls, the demons begin to gnaw their way out of my tainted soul.
My story is dark and heinous, a daunting tale of no redemption.
Or is there?
**This book is intended for those 18+ or older. Rock Bottom is a READ in SERIES ORDER NOVELLA.
Silla Webb is a Kentucky native, raised in the heart of the Eastern Kentucky coal fields. A coal truck driver's daughter, and a railroader's wife, the coal fields own a special place in her heart. She is a work at home, Super Momma to three rowdy boys, who keep her on her feet from daylight to sunset. As a pass time from her everyday life, Silla started a blog-Momma's Secret Book Obsession, for reviewing romance novels. From there, she realized that not only did she have a natural love for reading and reviewing, but she found that lost love of writing that she once had as a young girl. When she isn't conquering the world as a wife, momma and Super Woman, Silla loves to lay on the front porch swing and read while sipping sweet tea, just passin' the day away.
I read Covered in Coal three years ago and have loved each of her books. Firstly covers don't normally grab me but I loved this one.
This is Josh's story. He tells us in his words how he feels to be at rock bottom. Yes lost his family, betrayed by the people he trusted and is now in prison. We see him with his darkest thoughts.
Brilliantly written quick read that has me chomping at the bit for the next book in the series.
OMG this book blindsided me. All the disgust, the hate I felt towards Josh.....now I'm just lost. This is his story, we get inside the head of the man I considered the devil previously. But now, now I have completely flipped sides, I don't know if I'm one of the few or the majority here but after reading this I wanted to hug Josh, hold him until all his demons disappeared.
As always the author sucks you into the story almost immediately, then keeps you glued to the pages, turning and turning waiting to see what happens next. And then you get to the end and as much as you enjoyed getting there your dying for more. Rock Bottom is a quick read that turned my world upside down, I truly didn't expect to feel the way I did by the end of this book.
I read this book when it was part of the Love, Lies, and Crimes Anthology. It was an awesome surprise and one I didn't see coming. Josh isn't exactly a lovable character but he has a story to tell...
Josh has his secrets and tries his best to keep his demons locked away. It's hard when all he has is time to think while he is in jail for twenty-five years to life. That is really one of the only reasons why he goes to these therapy sessions that he hates. He has nothing else better to do. If this therapist could help reduce his sentence then he will sit and listen to her bullshit. The other reason is for his children. He might have shattered his marriage but he doesn't want to do the same with his relationship with his kids. He actually does love them, and being around them is the only time he can keep is temper in check. But, is it too late to repair the damage he has caused to his family?
Josh has a chance to get his revenge on the ones that deserted him when he needed them most. He doesn't trust the ones that want him to cooperate in doing just that. He also doesn't want to let his demons out. But is it the only way to get what he wants? He has his secrets. Will he keep them buried or will he dig them up?
I loved this. It was a glimpse into Josh's life before the evilness. I can't wait to find out what happens next in Depths of Darkness.
Quotes:
This is fuckin’ sick as hell, yet I’m too weak, too scared to put an end to it all.
“Dr. Hampton, there is a food chain of command in this world, and I just happen to be at the top.”
“You said it yourself, Doc. I‘d rather express myself through actions, and I’m fuckin’ careless.”
I guess from these reviews below I need 2 get on it and read the other books in this series, apparently there are a lot of very opinionated folks ... I don't mean that in a bad way, but when readers love a book or series they just get really heated in their discussions and make you wanna read more. Josh is a character that every one seem 2 have a love/hate relationship with. I am new to Silla's writing and I am so in love these characters, I can see how they dislike Josh and times but for me it made me wanna read even more ... I have Silla on my TBR list and show that I had the chance to read this ARC and I was like heck yeah, thank you for the opportunity. so cool. Loved it. so so hooked now! I wonder what it is like to read a book, or write a character that every one does hate. I tend to be the odd one out and go for the characters that everyone hates... that is the character that I love the most or wanna met in the dark alley or have taking care of my back in a fight. OH YEAH!! love the book cover so what pulled me in and makes ya wanna read more. Gotta get with it and find the time to read more from this series, thank you for the job well done Silla ... new fan I am ... so cool!! happy reading!! ( ;
This novella reminded me why I love Silla Webb's books! When it comes to drawing readers in with flawless writing and dynamic characters, Silla is the master. I've never had such a love/hate relationship with a character as much as I do with Josh. This man has some serious issues, and as much as I hate him for the fucked up things he's done, I absolutely loved getting inside of his head. He's definitely got some more layers that have yet to be revealed, and I can't wait for the best book in this series!
Disappointed! Over 50% of this book was regurgitated from past books. The rest of the material could have been easily included in book 3, the next one to be released, or just as bonus material.
While I am enjoying reading Silla Ward book can she get to the point already? She is dragging out these books which are really good, however I was expecting Josh to be the end of the series but oooo no she left it on a cliffhanger so we can find out about him. Which I am sure will lead to another cliffhanger that may lead to the lawyer or big John. Because of all these hanger Ms. Ward I am done with your books!
I was disappointed with this book. There was only 25 to 30 percent new storyline in this book, the rest was in previous books. Now the new part of this novella had me on the edge of my seat, again. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Now to understand this novella you will really want to read the first three books. I Highly Recommend this book and series.
I will admit to not liking Josh. His attitude at the beginning of the book didn't help. It's why I gave this book 4 stars, it's not my favorite of the series. After the first chapter or two I thought about not finishing this book because of him. However, knowing the author, I knew I had to keep reading because there had to be a reason behind his actions. This short novella is just an introduction to Josh. There is so much to his story I do not regret finishing it and I can't wait to read more of his story. After everything he has been through, I hope he has a happy ending.
This book definitely showed Josh has many different layers and how important it is not to poke the bear. Joseph's isn't pretty yet you walk away with a little more understanding of him. Yet this Buried Secrets and things never are as they seem. The more secrets that are uncovered the more questions you have.
We get to understand Josh and his backstory in this novella and dang if the man is not an alpha, You said it yourself, Doc. I‘d rather express myself through actions, and I’m effin’ careless.” I claim her mouth without remorse, teeth gnashing hungrily against her succulent lips." We're left with wanting more at the end, amd eagerly waiting for the next book.
My Review of Rock Bottom (Buried Secrets Book by Silla Webb My Rating 4.5 Stars I have loved this series since it all began and getting Josh’s backstory. Josh is like an onion through these chapters as the many layers are peeled back and I’m left with wanting so much more. Josh has many more layers to be revealed and I’ll be anxiously awaiting to see just what they are! This was an incredible story, brilliantly written. ** I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of his book in exchange for an honest review from the Authors**
My emotions are left and right with this novella. I really can not stand Josh because of what he did to Savannah, and not that I forgive him but......I'm feeling a sliver of empathy for the jerk. As his past unfolds some, we see things were not quite what they seemed. I want to think that there could be a small chance that Josh could redeem himself, at least for his children's sake. I cant wait for the next book to come out. I absolutely loved this series and it's one of my top 5 re-reads.
It's ok that I feel like I need a shower after reading this one. Talk about a cold black heart! Secrets are told, lies exposed and dark depravity abound in this little taste of what's to come. Silly girl,
