Chaos of the Covenant #2

Fire and Brimstone

Rate this book
Queenie is pissed.

You would be too if you had been blamed for something you didn't do, given something you didn't want, and changed into something else.

She still isn't even quite sure what that else is. The one thing she does know?

Things are getting messy, and this is only the beginning.

Gant is gone, Captain Mann has been captured, her so-called team is ready to make a run for the stars, and she's pretty sure the Gift that saved her life is no gift at all.

Even worse? The enemy didn't just steal the two most powerful starships in the galaxy; they're building a whole damn fleet of the things.

The Rejects are back, the mission is on, and failure is not an option.

Long live the Queen!

Fire and Brimstone is the second book in the science-fiction Chaos of the Covenant series:

Fire and Brimstone
by M.R. Forbes
This is book #2 in the series. Quite the action, sci-fi thriller! Love the imaginative characters and plot. The fast pace kept me interested and the plot was suspenseful. Can't wait to see what the Hell's Rejects get into next!

Great series

The series continues and this was a page turner. In some ways it doesn’t feel as developed as the first but well worth the read. Look forward to continuing the series.

This is turning into a pretty good series. I like the cast of characters even thought the main character is a female. Yeah, I’m a male chauvinist all the way through. Still, she’s not bad at being pretty tough. Well, it also helps that she’s now indestructible! Lieutenant Abigail Cage is in charge of her team from Hell! Of course you would have needed to read the first book to understand that statement. But, I’ll do some explaining.

Her team is comprised of prisoners which were sentenced to the prison planet name Hell. Abigail was also sentenced there even though she had been framed for the charges. Still, she managed to stay alive long enough for some or two someone’s to become interested in her. Captain Olus Mann is the head of the Republic Office of Special Investigation. That makes him the chief spook for the Republic. He knows something is brewing out in the Wastelands near the rim of known space, but he doesn’t know just what. So, he managed to break Lieutenant Cage and a number of other ex-military out of Hell and set them up as a quasi-special forces outfit reporting to him. Now these guys and gals are all hardened criminals. They did what ever crime they were sentenced to Hell for and that’s a fact. Abbey, on the other hand, is pretty innocent, but she’s a Lieutenant full of self-righteous indignation and now, something called the “Gift”. It was injected into her just before the breakout from Hell. Captain Mann had nothing to do with that. The “Gift” isn’t understood by Abbey. She feels it inside her, it’s doing something.

They have been assigned the mission to find and recover two Republic starships, the Brimstone and the Fire. They went to an out-of-the-way planet to see if they could get a led on where these two ships were taken after they were stolen from the shipbuilder during a big ceremony. While on this planet, Feru, they encounter some of Gloritant Thraven’s people and one in particular, Trin. She is a disciple of Thraven full of the “Gift” which makes her almost indestructible, just like Abbey. They fight and Abbey manages to get the better of Trin and then kills her by cutting off her head. Apparently, that’s the only way to truly kill someone who is consumed by the “Gift”. Just after doing that, though, Abbey is mercilessly gunned down by the remaining members of Trin’s gang. Her bullet riddled body is carried back to the Faust, placed in the care of their auto-doc knowing that there wasn’t much it could do for her.

Abbey wakes to find the auto-doc standing over her looking very confused. She’s asks him what his problem is and he states that he’s logic loop or rather confused since he doesn’t know how she could possible be alive given there was nothing he could do for her massive wounds, yet here she is now sitting up and breathing. It seems as though the “Gift” can repair just about any damage as long as one doesn’t loose their head. So, now the Faust believes the Brimstone has gone to the planet Anvil and that’s where they are going. Just how they will be able to overtake a huge, gigantic starship that’s armed to the teeth and accomplish their mission is unknown. Even Abbey refuses to think about it. All she can think about is who is this Gloritant Thraven and what the hell is this “Gift” I’ve been given. The story results in some pretty spectacular battles along the way.

This book is very easy to read. I found myself rapidly covering pages, yet the story line seemed to flow logically. I also didn’t mind the “super powers” Abbey seems to have acquired although it does seem to make her less careful in firefights. She’s now getting shot a lot instead of ducking. The “Gift” also has to be fed. It seems it can exist and sustain itself by consuming huge amounts of food. In ordered to grow in strength, Abbey is aware that she has a hunger for blood of others with the “Gift”. That’s now getting into the realm of vampires and stuff, but I don’t think it’s the same thing.

There’s more to come. In fact the next book in the series, “The Devil’s Do” is already out and of course, I have it. I would encourage anyone to read this series because it’s very interesting, well written, and not as gross as it could be.

Queenie and the Rejects ride again

This second book delves more deeply into metaphysics and mythology than the first but doesn't blunt the swords, sorcery and all around mayhem of Hell's rejects. This series offers all one could ask for in action and adventure. Highly recommended.

Full review is here, on my blog!~

This story picks up pretty much where the last one left off. Queenie and her crew are recovering from the events of the end of the last book, half scattered here and there, half injured, and their first priority is to find the ones that were captured or left behind. Queenie’s second priority is finding out what the hell they did to her in prison to give her superpowers, because it’s turning out to not be the greatest gift she’s ever been given.

Fire and Brimstone here refers to two super advanced, bonkers powerful spaceships that the enemy has stolen from the Republic. The enemy here being the Nephilim. Space-Nephilim who are fighting the Hell’s Rejects, who escaped from the planet Hell, in their spaceship… the Faust. You see where this is going? This might sound cheesy to you but I thought that all this hellscape and devilry imagery was a pretty good theme for a sci-fi story. We’re starting to get a little more backstory on the Nephilim in this volume as well, which is neat. It’s a cool idea, all told. It’s like Mass Effect, meets Suicide Squad, meets… Dante’s Inferno.

Gant is still by far my favorite character. He’s basically a grouchy, snarky Ewok with an itchy trigger finger, and that’s as awesome as it sounds. It really is. I hope he keeps on being awesome throughout the rest of the series.

Jeff Hays totally nails the narration of this one as usual. At this point, I’m not really expecting anything less than that from him. I’ve been able to sit and listen to pretty much any book he has narrated, even the one that I didn’t really like. In this particular one, each character is unique, accents are on point (I especially like Mann’s accent. It’s a bit different than I normally hear in books and that’s somewhat refreshing), and special effects really help when they are used properly, as they are here. Having an excellent narration really helps me to get into a book. It gives me more of a chance to experience books I would probably find hard to read in print. This sometimes happens to me with hard sci-fi, classics, non-fiction and even some of the longer epic fantasy series. So, I turn to audiobooks. I’ve found some really good books this way, and it has broadened my horizons. The hills are alive with the sound of audiobooks, and so on. *twirls*

My biggest pet peeve for this series thusfar is that the author has…. re-purposed a word as a swear word. This sort of thing irritates me in books, as I have pointed out in other reviews, maybe because I am the foulest of foul mouths, but mostly because it seems really, really unnecessary. These characters speak English, use other swear words as normal, and yet they the word ‘frag’ to very clearly mean fuck. So… just say fuck? Battlestar Galactica used the word frak in place of fuck because they were a television show trying to cleverly bypass television censors, and this usage feels like it’s trying to emulate that in some fashion. There are no censors here though, except for those special snowflakes that can’t hear or see the word fuck without cringing a little despite probably having no problems with the tons of murder, decapitation and general space-warfare also featured here. To me, the replacement of just that one swear word for one that clearly has the same intent gives this book less of the edge that it looks like and sounds like it should have, if that makes sense. All this imagery of hell and damnation… I feel like a book with giant scary battle destroyers called the Fire and the Brimstone could load a proper fucking f-bomb into their torpedo bays.

Either way, whatever floats your spaceship, I guess. I think I would have appreciated at least a few well placed fucks… but that’s me.

I didn’t like this one as much as I liked the first one, but I did still really like it more and more as it went, and I thought it was a pretty good use of 8 hours of my time. I’m excited for the next one in the series!

The series isn't a set of 7 books. It's one long book with 7 chapters presented as "books" for easier reading. They are arbitrarily split based on the number of pages. That's why each "book" has a cliff hanger—there is no separate story arch with resolution in each chapter. The whole thing is one endless pulp.

That's why the review is applicable to the whole series and every chapter individually. They are virtually the same plot with too many endless details of action/fighting scenes that just annoy after a couple of times and not enough story, world building, or character development to make it more than a junk space fantasy that feels like a "fast food" type of reading.

Looks like the author was training his writing muscles and repurposed—for the lack of the better word—many ideas and concepts from popular sci-fi books and movies. Think of the Chaos of the Covenant as the Star Wars with less story and more fights and a mix of Suicide Squad and Guardian of the Galaxy movies' characters as "rebels".

Fire and Brimstone – M.R. Forbes (Chaos of the Covenant #2)

The second in the series following Queenie and her Rejects or Abbey and her fellow escapees if that sounds more up your alley!

The story continues from where it left off previously and throughout the book it feeds us some more information about Thraven and the Nephilim, Abbey/Queenie’s ‘gift’ develops some more interesting quirks and Gant is back on board – though on what ship would be telling. We lose a reject and gain a Nerd! Bastion/Lucifer is still a wise cracking pain in the proverbial, Benhil/Jester has yet to do anything apart from mouth off. And Mann is building up to do something, well at least I’m hoping he is! Enemies become allies, enemies really fracking hate each other and friends become enemies – switching sides is busier than Deadline Day football transfer market sometimes!

M.R.Forbes gives us exciting battles – both space and soldier based, relatable and funny characters, spies and aliens and now God and the fallen – in some shape or form.
There’s four more in this series and I’m looking forward to seeing who makes it out of this alive and how many pieces they make it out in.

A great read and great characters, thank you Mr M.R. Forbes.

You Gain Some You Lose Some

The book is an easy read as the action flows and the characters are well defined and real. Abigail continues to get more and more badass. She needs to if she is going to thwart Gloritant Thraven in his plot to conquer and enslave the galaxy to further his ambitions. They gain a few recruits in the struggle against Thraven but lose one in a defection to him. Abigail "Queenie" does not have enough power to overcome Thraven so she wants more of the power even though she fears it. They are rescued from the fight with Thraven by the Watchers, another supernatural group. Queenie needs to know more to make the right decisions on how to continue. I am now downloading the next book The Devils Do.

Starting to get the hang of this series...

After the uphill struggle with the first novel in this series (at least the first half was a bit of a slog), I'm starting to get into the rhythm of things. Things are getting clearer, the action is fast and furious, but I'm still finding the premise of the series (as I understand it so far) a bit hard to swallow. Nonetheless, its full steam ahead... to book 3!

6/10: Good light-weight read, well done.

“Hell’s Rejects: We do the evil, so nobody else has to.”

OK, so I’m struggling just a wee bit with this series. It’s no War Eternal. But it is an M.R. Forbes, so it’s still interesting. I’m just having trouble identifying or connecting with Abbey.

I miss Mitchell.

As this is only the second book in the series, I’ve decided to read one more before committing a DNF of the whole shebang. I’m still hopeful for some feels and some high stakes action and some absorbing world building.

I know Forbes is up to it. But is Chaos of the Covenant up to War Eternal standards?

We’ll just have to wait & see...

The first was a decent read, even though it had a cliffhanger. I'd hoped something would be resolved in book 2, but nope, another cliffhanger! It's clear the series is just going to drag out until the end, and while I'm curious to know what happens, I'll not going to fall for buying book after book that's really just a series of chapters.

It took me a bit to remember everything from the first book as I read it some time ago. Once things started falling into place I settled into the story. I like how the rejects are becoming a good team. The characters are well written and the story has a good pace. Still lots of adventure to come I think!

A good follow up to the first book. This one kept my interest high, despite knowing I was getting into a 7-book series. These are, however, shorter novels, and not quite as densely packed as a series like The Expanse. These read more like a summer-blockbuster action flick.

The story was really quite good but for me a little to much suspense (drama) in to many predictable places. I really enjoyed Captain Gauls death... such as whiny useless excuse for a being. I am thinking we will see Trin the brass b@tch return (sigh). Curious to see Queenie grow further.

I’m listening to the series on audio in the car and it is fabulous! I love it when a male voice reads the male characters and a female the female characters. It brings the story alive and this series needs to be told! I am SO enjoying it!.

A good continuation of the series. I liked that a side character (Gant) got more room in this book. There were a few editing mistakes, but not that many. The author is really good at keeping the pace up while still have a well thought out plot.

Considerably more enjoyable than the first book, a bit more background is revealed and the story takes off. Just enough humor mixed in to keep the mayhem in perspective.
