Bill Willingham
993 books2,822 followersIn the late 1970s to early 1980s he drew fantasy ink pictures for the Dungeons & Dragons Basic and Expert game rulebooks. He first gained attention for his 1980s comic book series Elementals published by Comico, which he both wrote and drew. However, for reasons unknown, the series had trouble maintaining an original schedule, and Willingham's position in the industry remained spotty for many years. He contributed stories to Green Lantern and started his own independent, black-and-white comics series Coventry which lasted only 3 issues. He also produced the pornographic series Ironwood for Eros Comix.
In the late 1990s Willingham reestablished himself as a prolific writer. He produced the 13-issue Pantheon for Lone Star Press and wrote a pair of short novels about the modern adventures of the hero Beowulf, published by the writer's collective, Clockwork Storybook, of which Willingham was a founding member. In the early 2000s he began writing extensively for DC Comics, including the limited series Proposition Player, a pair of limited series about the Greek witch Thessaly from The Sandman, and most notably the popular series Fables

I really loved this!
This makes it even sadder that basically everyone has told me the quality degrades, the plot goes off the rails, and the ending sucks. However. For now, though?
What an incredibly fun ride!
Jack is one of those awful people that coast through life without any moral qualms, leaving complete destruction in their wake. But as long as he isn't in your town and it isn't happening to you, it's a lot of fun to watch him get away with it.
If you've read the main Fables title, you already know that Jack played the part of several Jack's in fairytale lore. But by the end of this, you find out that the rabbit hole goes even deeper than you originally imagined, and even Jack learns a few things about his origins that he never suspected.

Every bit as good as Fables. It turns out every fairy tale with someone named Jack in it is all about the same person, Jack of the Tales. Jack is a womanizing, douche bag, conman always looking to strike it rich. Just when his schemes are bout to succeed, his wicked ways come back to bite him in the ass. Some of the characters are self aware about their nature as being in a story and can take a metaphysical twist.
In the first volume, Jack gets snatched up by this group that is looking to make Fables fade away by removing them from the public zeitgeist. We meet a bunch of Fables we haven't seen before as the Golden Boughs might as well be a second Fables farm. He immediately hatches an escape plan to break out.
Next, we learn about Jack's time as Jack Frost while he hides out from the librarians. Jack heads to Vegas with his trusty sidekick Gary who can anthropomorphize any inanimate object. Jack faces off against Lady Luck because Vegas ain't big enough for the both of them.
Lastly, Jack learns about his origins and how he is tied to Wicked John. One of the Page sisters plans a top secret mission with Paul Bunyan. The metaphysical portion of the series kicks off in this volume as we learn about who Kevin Thorn really is and that Jack has grown so popular that he has become a story magnet. Babe the Blue Ox's one page daydreams start in this volume and continue throughout the series. We also hear how Jack become Jack O'Lantern.

Średnia ocen trochę gasiła mój entuzjazm. Ale i tym razem głos ludu mylił się w swojej masie. 😂
Jestem fanem „Baśni” Billa Willinghama. Nawet tych słabszych części. I ten tom ma ich klimat. Bo samych Baśniowców znanych z tamtej serii jest tutaj jak na lekarstwo. Dzięki temu Jack może grać w końcu główną rolę. Do tego jest przecież stworzony. Przynajmniej on sam tak uważa. 😉
W pierwszym tomie Willingham niejednokrotnie puszcza oko do czytelników, „przebijając” tzw. czwartą ścianę. Do tego robi się momentami tak jakby metatekstualnie. Choć to trochę za mocne określenie. Whatever…
Czytelnicy nie znający „Baśni” mogą a nawet na pewno zgubią sporo kontekstu. To powieść przede wszystkim dla czytelników głównej serii. Ale może i nowi dadzą sobie z nią radę. A dzięki niej sięgną po „Baśnie”? (Co dziwne, nie ma w tym tomie żadnych istotnych spoilerów). Czytając kolejne przygody Jacka - a to dopiero tom pierwszy z trzech - sam nabierałem chęci do powrotu do serii głównej.
Tylko dlaczego to wydanie jest „miękkie” a nie „twarde”? Momentami bałem się, że rozwalę. Na szczęście jest bardzo solidnie wykonane. Mimo to trochę szkoda. Jednak „Baśnie” też były wydawane „na miękko”.
Generalnie, bardzo udany powrót do świata „Baśni”. Chodzący chaos, którym jest Jack zapewnia mnóstwo dobrej zabawy. A fabuła jest bardzo poważna. I nowy adwersarz(?) też bardzo interesujący. Bo wszystko jest opowieścią i ostatecznie tylko to się liczy.

Oh, incredibile... Mi è piaciuto un sacco!
Decisamente meglio della serie madre, fin dal primo volume!
La trama è più dinamica, il tono è più leggero e in generale la storia è molto più avvincente: non si perde in mille mila filler come Fables, ma è piena di avventure rocambolesche e ci sono colpi di scena ogni due pagine.
Jack non è mai stato il mio personaggio preferito e continua a non esserlo, anche se adesso almeno ha senso di esistere. Gary, d'altro canto, compensa tutta l'antipatia del protagonista ed è davvero adorabile.
E poi la svolta metaletteraria è stata un colpo di genio, sicuramente l'aspetto migliore della serie!
E pensare che l'ho iniziata solo per capirci qualcosa del crossover... veramente una bella sorpresa.

February 28, 2024TBH I wasn't that interested in Jack of Fables, because Jack is such an asshole, but I got to the great crossover and realized that this series was happening concurrently and I probably should be reading it oops. So here I am. Actually, I'll give it to Willingham, because, even though I still hate this guy, the story is still excellent, and it's also very funny. You don't have to like Jack, and it's pretty clear you're not meant to think he's a good person. He's a classic unreliable narrator too, so this was actually very fun, and I'm glad I've gone back to get these.

Bill Willingham "we're not worthy, we're not worthy" (a lá Wayne's world) how do you make a great series even better? You spin off one of the minor characters, and give them their own awesomely unique series. Jack is arrogant, braggadocious, and a womanizer. In other words, he's my hero. With the completion of this Volume, I have officially read more "Jack of Fables" than I have of "Fables" but I can already tell this is the series for me. Like the original series "Fables" it has a great on going story, using classic characters from all your favorite fables, and some you've probably never heard of. Unlike Fables, it's a bit more humorous and less of an ensemble book, and more focused on one character. Overall if you love Fables, definitely check this book out, if you don't like Fables, still check it out, you might like the change in pace.

Nic więc dziwnego, że po opuszczeniu Baśniogrodu robi on zawrotną karierę w Hollywood. Łamie on jednak przy tym jedną z najważniejszych zasad, zakazującą używania posiadanych mocy na śmiertelnikach. Kończy się to dla niego odebraniem mu całego majątku i dosłownym wykopaniem na ulicę. W tym właśnie momencie rozpoczyna się dla niego nowy etap życia, który mamy okazję obserwować. Przewracając kolejne strony albumu, widzimy jego podróż przez USA i odkrywamy różne jego oblicza, które przyciągają problemy, jak magnes.
Twórcy postanowili stworzyć osobny byt w znanym uniwersum, po który teoretycznie może sięgnąć każdy. Takie przynajmniej były założenia, bo rzeczywistość jest niestety trochę inna. Jeśli chcemy czerpać pełnię przyjemności z lektury tego tytułu, to konieczna jest dobra znajomość Baśni. Często pojawiają się tu bowiem mniej lub bardziej oczywiste nawiązania, które wyłapie i zrozumie jedynie fan serii.
Koncept fabularny Jack z Baśni tom 1 to nic innego jak dawka wartkiej przygody z różnymi szalonymi i czasem dramatycznymi przygodami głównego bohatera. Podstawę scenariusza stanowi tu szalony humor, który szczelnie wypełnia każdą stronę dzieła. Opiera się on głównie na bezkompromisowości Jacka, jego elastycznej moralności i częstym burzeniu przez niego czwartej ściany. Pierwszy z trzech tomów wydania zbiorczego spin-offu Baśni, czyli Billa Willinghama nie przypadł mi do gustu. Dlaczego tak się stało?
Album zawiera materiały opublikowane wcześniej w amerykańskich zeszytach Jack Of Fables #1–16, wybór wstępnych szkiców Akinsa, a także przedmowę tytułowego bohatera.
''Po opuszczeniu bezpiecznych, lecz dusznych granic Baśniogrodu na rzecz okrutnych i dławiących marzenia ulic Hollywood, niezrównany Jack Horner zyskał niespotykaną sławę oraz fortunę, sprzedając własną, nadmiernie ubarwioną legendę… Tylko po to, by wszystko odebrali mu stróże baśniogrodzkiego prawa. Teraz pozbawiony bogactwa i zmuszony do życia na wygnaniu Jack musi powrócić do korzeni jako wędrowny szelma, goniący za łatwymi pieniędzmi i jeszcze łatwiejszymi kobietami. Reasumując, niezależnie od zamiarów, czy też wizji, jakie mieli twórcy, Jack z baśni to nie moja bajka. Nie przywiązałam się do żadnego z bohaterów, a fabuła zwyczajnie mnie nie zainteresowała. Po kolejne tomy sięgać nie zamierzam, natomiast w internecie natknęłam się na sporo pozytywnych recenzji, dlatego też nie zniechęcam was do zakupu komiksu. Po prostu przeczytajcie go i przekonajcie się sami.

Muy divertido volumen recopilatorio de las aventuras de Jack Horner, el gran protagonista de decenas de fábulas que siempre se salva gracias a su suerte e ingenio. Este es uno de los principales spin-off de Fables, escrito por su mismo creador y lleno de ingeniosas versiones y explicaciones sobre los cuentos que todos conocemos. Lo mejor de todo, el villano principal Mr. Revise que se asegura de ir cambiando las fábulas hasta que se vuelven insignificantes y caen en el olvido. Mención especial al gran Gary; la Falacia Patética (o falacia antropomórifca), responsable de dar caraterísticas humanas a los objetos inanimados de los cuentos. La lectura es agil, divertida e ingeniosa. Muy recomendado.

This is the first collection I've read in the Fables 'universe' and I certainly want to read more. The focus is on Jack who is many Jacks of legend - Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack the Giant Killer, Jack Frost, and more. He's a self-centered, flamboyant dreadful example of the male species drawing both good and bad fortune. This works because the writing is snarky and wonderfully funny; Jack frequently gets his comeuppance (and bounces back); and this volume is packed with adventures. Jack finds himself confined in a village with other fable characters as well as being on the run - living both the high and low life - and re-telling his adventures through the ages as he sees them. My rating is 4 stars for this fun volume.

Ja! Jack Horner! Przedstawili mnie jako rozszalałe błazeńskie id o cudownej fryzurze, nic ponadto!”

If you can handle Jack then you will enjoy this issue. If you did not miss him after he left the main Fables series feel free to pass on Jack of Fables. This volumes catches the reader up on what Jack has been up to since he departed New York. Some twists and turns make for an interesting story however I was growing tired of Jack by volumes end.

That was hilarious and fun and i look forward to the rest. Normally I'm not overly fond of series with protagonists who are jerks, but it works in this case. The storytelling is solid and the art is great. I recommend this series, though, warning, tgere are some spoilers if you haven't read the Fables series and plan to.

I love that Jack is all the Jack’s of fable lore and the use of this spin-off to tell some of those stories and tie them together. Still, as a character Jack is a bit one-dimensional and his selfish interests get tired after awhile. Has a trickster character, he could benefit from more complexity to sustain through this many stories.

Fun! I wasn't going to read this spin-off series from the main Fables series but as I was getting into the second arc of Fables, realized that Jack's storyline was converging with the main storyline so felt like I was missing a lot of important information.
The issues in Jack Of Fables are half stand alone stories and half part of a bigger narrative that gets very meta.

You know late in a season when nothing is left to play for and they play the second string. This is the second string of Fables. Somewhat entertaining, decent art, juvenile lead. For fans of the series it brings in some concepts that add to the universe and there are some funny moments. Everyone else stick to the main series.

Really more like 3.5 stars. Art is great, just like the Fables series. The trouble is when you make your main character a sexist jerk, you've got to do a lot to make the story great. And maybe it is just it pales in comparison to the rest of the Fables series, but this just isn't as good.

Meget underholdende. Skæv fantasifuld. Der er ikke det eventyr den egoistiske og selvfede jack ikke er villig til at tage ud på for sin egen skyld. Stor anbefaling.

I find Jack annoying which feels very intentional but still can make these stories a bit tedious to read. I’m very intrigued by the Literals and it was that type of meta stuff that kept me coming back to Fables. But I liked the characters in Fables. I’m very much on the fence with this one but interested enough to read Book 2.

I LOVE all the Fable books, this one especially because Jack is one of my favorite characters.
