At the opening of this tale, things were a bit confusing. There's strange transitions between scenes and head-hopping that could've been handled with a bit more finesse. That said, I liked the plight of the characters and the overall story. While it reads like a Paranormal/Fantasy, with its creative ideation of what might face people caught between life and death, whether that be from regrets or their body being caught in suspension between the two, there's far more to it.

As the narrative moves on, the reader is caught in the mingled despair and hope held by Lexie, Drake and Zoe respectively. I find it beautiful (whether purposeful or otherwise) that Thompson chose to name one of her main characters “life.” Which comes down to the true purpose of the work. In their darkest moments, whether secret or immediately obvious, these three characters are faced with a decision that so many struggle with every day. What choice does someone who feels they've lost everything make? When the struggle of living becomes all-consuming, do we give in to the peace “the end” offers, or continue to press on?

While the prose could've been tighter and the content clearer in some places, the overall message shines through. I recommend this for anyone who has ever faced the question of why they should continue to press on, even in their worst moment.
