From the bestselling author of the Graham's Resolution series comes book two in the Surrender the Sun series. Conditions in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, are proving unsustainable in the year 2030. The mini ice age, caused by the Maunder Minimum affects, are brutal at best and their life systems are limited and failing fast. Bishop seeks a safe haven for his new family and the only answer leads him back to his nightmares. Leaving the comfort of their luxury hotel is their only answer, but the journey may prove more perilous than their current existence. For those who like a little vigilante justice in a post apocalyptic world.
The twists and turns in this mini ice age leave me speechless! The decisions that have to be made in order to survive are unreal! This is suspense at its finest, but also a chilling foretell, no pun intended, of what could be. Oh and bonus points for including an awesome character from east Texas!
Sanctuary was a really enjoyable book. A.R. Shaw really knows how to write. She had me on the edge of my seat for more than half of this book. And the action never really stopped. I thought for sure that now that things were a little safer that the series would slow down a bit, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Things aren’t safe and they are only getting more and more dangerous. I felt like one of the characters of the book. Just when I thought the snow and cold were going to stop, it gets colder and snowier.
The overall premise of this book felt incredibly real. I think that Shaw really did a lot of thinking and some research into what would happen (or what has happened) when things really start to take a turn. The flashback scene and the scene with the woman in the road were easily some of the most memorable in this series. And I can tell that some research went into the method of transportation that is utilized later in the book.
The first book in the Surrender the Sun series easily took one of my top books of 2016, and I hope that Shaw releases book three on audiobook in 2017. I don’t know if I can wait any longer to find out exactly what happens to everyone that I’ve grown to love throughout books one and two.
Overall, a great book with a nasty cliffhanger at the end. Just be prepared for that, it caught me completely off guard. I can tell you this, A.R. Shaw is a name to watch out for when it comes to new and unique Post-Apocalyptic stories.
I will still round up to five stars, but this book lost a half star on the aggressive cliffhanger. I don’t like them but have come to expect them, especially in books that are part of a series. I’ve noticed lately that more and more books are series based with an unknown number of books in them. I usually like knowing this is book 2 of X before diving in, but my love of all things post-apocalypse has lead me down a path into the darkness of the unknown series length.
It is amazing that I did not want to stop reading. Then again I don’t want it to end. There are few authors that have grabbed me enough, that I plan to read whatever they have written. This author certainly has made that list. The Dystopian topic is one that many rise the eyebrows at, thinking one morbid, crazy or a conspiracy freak. But then again their are many that believe romance, Wild West, even murder mysteries are a bunch of subjects that are perceived as a waste. With genre like this you find the true bonding, the true evil, educational information to aid you in preparation for unforeseen circumstances, be it a hurricane, earthquake, or any other “natural occurrence” to those caused by the “Human race”. The character building is remarkable, getting the reader dragged in as if you need to know...what happened to a friend. Never a dull or even a deniable moment of what is very possible in circumstances. I am excited for the next book.
The Maunder Minimum continues its oppressive deep freeze and will do so for years to come. Bishop realizes that he, Maeve, Ben, and Luna cannot remain in Coeur d'Alene. Housing and supplies are not sufficient to survive the mini ice age set upon them. New facilities are a must and the need to find such is immediate. Upon gaining access to an Osprey aircraft and its pilot Walt, Bishop learns of a bunker which would fill their needs quite nicely. The problem is that (a.) it is one thousand miles away and (b.) it is currently occupied. Gathering enough volunteers and former soldiers from his community of survivors, Bishop makes plans to assault the bunker. Should Bishop be successful in taking the bunker, he still needs the Osprey to make several shuttle runs of survivors from Coeur d'Alene. The shuttle service requires more aviation fuel than they have access to or know where to acquire it. Without the Osprey it would be a deadly trek across barren, frozen ground in sub-zero temperatures. With no resupply coming they had to make do with what they had. Is this mission even possible? Stay tuned my friends to find out!
I devoured the first book in one siting because I needed to know what happened next. This instalment of the trilogy, I kept reading to see if, at any point, it appeared that some editing had happened. I found myself editing passages in my head as I went a long. The phrasing of the dialogue was...off. Word choice and order was unnatural, and I don't remember that from the first book at all. As well, there was a lot of repetition of adjectives and turns of phrase. At one point we are given a description of a character and almost every part of her body is described as slim.
Will I read the final book in the trilogy? Yup. I am invested in these characters. Despite what I hope is just a sophomore slump for this series, I need to know what happens next!
Once again, A.R. Shaw keeps the pace lively in her tale of attempts to survive the unimaginable!
I love the way A.R. keeps your mind hopping as she fills in her tale of survivors facing seemingly insurmountable odds. Bishop continues to show determination and exemplary leadership, despite the circumstances of a worsening little ice age. Even Jax is showing an ability to deal with people and lead as a second to Bishop.
if you love fast paced action and totally believable characters, you will enjoy the Surrender the Sun series! Those who believe in preparedness will also pick up a few things to consider.
Firstly, only reason I didn't give it five starts, was it was too short.
The series is well-read, interesting and enthralling. The setting of the Maunder minimum causing a mini ice age makes for a mental image as the story evolves that adds to the drama amongst the characters. The inclusion of the super-loner, Jax, throughout more of the story makes for some good interaction.
The ending of the book culminates in a highly suspenseful scene where the group is divided, with Walt, the pilot, potentially lost in the frozen storm. The journey to get people to a new home proves to be an impossible race against time. I will say, though, it made me want to already start book 3.
As some other reviews mentioned this but could use a little editing just to tighten it up grammatically. As a standalone story I’m not so sure it’s so great but as the middle of a trilogy it’s got me wanting to read the next installment. As a dystopian thriller it’s not really politically is socially very detailed. The cast of characters are sympathetic if simply drawn and not too complex. It’s a quick read and quite a page turner with the ongoing action and short chapters.
Engrossing! Fast paced, edge of your seat story that grabs you from the onset and never lets you go! The premise of the story is creative and original, unlike many of the other PA books I have read and I am a devotee of that genre. The focus of the story, not the characters particurally, is the apparent suddent onset of a winter that turns into a mini-ice age. The characters in the story are multiple, primary and secondary, and there is minimal development of them and not much depth.
I got this book to see just how the author would continue the story from book 1. All in all it was an extremely sophomoric follow-up to what was a halfway decent book. The prose were incomplete, jumped around and left out details in the narrative that left me shaking my head. Unfortunately I also bought book 3.......question is will I take the time to read it? IDK...... Stay away from.
Great characters and a plot that's pretty believable. I would have given it 5 stars, if there hadn't been so many errors in spelling, punctuation, continuity, etc. I will read all of this series and any/all of her other books, they are that good, but I hope the proofing is better.
Amazing story that is so real it will make you shiver. AR Shaw has done it again, taken a world we know and cast us into a possible future that is both scary and so realistic. While this is a work of fiction, I might just be adding a few items to my stockpile of supplies. This is no far out science fiction, but something that feels a little to real.
Another thrilling book, Shaw never fails to deliver. After securing safe shelter for his family and 100's of other in book one it has become clear tht tthings are getting worse. The weather is deteriorating, people are starving, something has to be done if people are going to survive. An unexpected arrival brings new hope but is it time to save everyone.
Well this series has me on pins and needles. So much suspense and something taking place at every turn .I just hope things will get better for Bishop and Maeve and their group. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I was at the edge of my seat reading this book. The suspense was killing me. I kept thinking of how cold it is. Makes me thankful I don't live in Idaho or Colorado!
This second installment of how to survive a new ice age was just as good as the first. Well written characters, nice twists , I loved every page. Looking forward to read book three
The mini ice age is getting worst. Decisions have to be made, hard decisions. Who goes first, and how many can be saved. Flying ends, and now the new wagon train begins.
Oh my goodness!!!!! The suspense!!!! I love Bishop and Maeve! It is mind boggling the survival instincts and the possibilities of what a person would do in an ice age!
Cold and then colder. Nice clean story with some romance tossed in. The good guy do the best they can against mother nation. Some times leader have to make tough decisions they don't want to.
I am enjoying this series and watching the characters developing. I have binge listening to this series. As always there is a cliffhanger at the end which encourages you to listen to the next book in the series.
This was a strong second book in the Surrender the Sun series. There were quite a few more characters added or developed, but there was a good balance between the characters we were already familiar with and the new ones. I enjoyed this book about as much as I did the first one.
This was a fast past action apocalyptic novel, it caused me to think of the reality of everything that this country can go through during a natural disaster. Keep writing A.R Shaw.
Ahhh what a cliffhanger! I’m glad I have the box set. Fast paced but ended too soon. Reading this in the dead heat of a Texas August and still have chills.
