Saran was a Warlord who was used to having what he wanted, when he wanted, and how he wanted. He was strong, capable and feared. Then an event changed his world forever. Now all he has left is fear and the woman that he gave little notice to before. He'll discover that just as strength comes in many different forms so does love and sometimes it takes the heart of a Warlord to recognize his unexpected bride.
The hero was hard headed and the heroine took too much of his dumb behaviors.
I like that the book is about a range of strength and the heroine is powerful is a soft, caring way.
I just wish the hero had treasured her sooner.
The culture of the world in regards to women didn't thrill me and the series plot was less engaging than I would like but not a terrible read by any means.
Some more shelves- Hero is Heroine’s only lover. Hero Heroine lovers at the beginning of the book. Hero hurts Heroine’s tender feelings. Hero thinks that Heroine is not good enough to marry. Hero rejects Heroine. Hero breaks up with the Heroine. Heroine has eyes only for the Hero. Heroine too soft and forgiving. Prospective Other Man is patiently waiting in the wings. Hero jealous of Other Man’s attention. Hero is a dog-in-the-manger. Hero wants Heroine back. Hero woos Heroine. Heroine develops spine. Heroine rebuffs Hero’s advances. Evil Other Man is also waiting in the wings. Hero Heroine make-up. Hero is mauled by wild beast. Hero goes into depression. Hero breaks up with the Heroine (AGAIN!!!) Hero Heroine make-up. Evil Other Man plots to break them up. Potential Other Women threatens Heroine. Heroine puts Potential Other Women in place. Evil Other Man attempts to molest Heroine. Heroine rescued by friend. Hero sees red. Hero kills Evil Other Man.
In the middle of all this Break-up make-up drama........as fillers, we have, Enemy Raiding. Enemy Attacking. Fighting and battle. Sword fighting and training. And...... we also have, Brief appearances of other characters in the series.
So............ It’s, Not a stand-alone. Overall an average read for me.
A good story with interesting characters that shows that strength comes in many forms, and that sometimes the quiet, kind ones have the greatest strength of all.
I've read the first two books in this series and although Unexpected Bride is meant to be a standalone story, I felt there was a lot of assumed knowledge. Some things felt familiar, but for the most part, there was the feeling as though you've entered into the fun group mid-conversation.
Saran was a frustrating hero and I didn't see his appeal. Lord save me from blind, idiot heroes. The heroine was heaps more interesting but you really felt for her after she got knocked down so many times.
Usually Michelle Howard is a solid buy, but I'm not convinced of this series.
I really liked this story, it had it sad moments, it's sweet moments and happy moments. I enjoyed seeing Vaan with MiKayla, they are one of my favorite couples. The only complaint I have is that I wished I had seen more when Saran was with Melene. They didn't really end up together till 2/3 of the book. I would have liked too see them grow in their relationship a bit more instead of the conflict between them.
Warlords are expected to be tough, hard and unemotional. So when our warlord gets a bride that was unexpected and not necessarily wanted, he sees no reason to change. However the presence of a female in his life challenges everything he has previously believed. The storyline follows his character as he learns how to live with the female in his life. It is, at times, funny and painful for both the Warlord and his unexpected bride.
The book is worth buying and reading but it is a bit slow to start and saran is a bit of an ass off and on through the book especially in the begging and it takes a third of the book for him to start pulling his head out. From the animal attack on it is strong like her other books
I have to say I had my doubts about the story but it quickly picked up and I enjoyed it very much! I still don’t understand why Kavan’s story is taking so long...with greater anticipation comes greater expectation (hint, hint, no pressure here 😉)
I've loved every book in this series so far. The characters are well thought out and lovable. The complete series is captivating and remarkable, highly recommended!
I was frustrated at first with the actions of both lead characters, but there was character growth over the course of the story, and a satisfying conclusion.
I also enjoyed the bonus short story which I had not seen before.
