Benjamin Otto is a bottle of liquid luck. Good looks. Good brain. Whatever the challenge: good odds. Except, what happens when those odds change?
Dad's had enough bankrolling Ben and requests him to get a job. The challenge: make enough money to finance Christmas or face telling his little brother the holidays are dead.
Then there's Sebastian. The guy from his politics class who is always coming in second after him. The guy who steals Ben's idea to collect bottles for quick cash. The guy who makes Ben wonder if any amount of luck will be enough to win him what he really wants...

Ben dusted pine needles off his shirt. "Maybe it's the universe telling me something," he murmured at Sebastian. "Like it's about time I took a fall."
it had so much potential, if only it was longer and the relationship was more developed but yk what, i can't complain tooo much bc it was still cute and i liked both mcs, as well as the side characters. these two deserve a full length book tho, just sayin' 🥺
This story snuck up on me. It begins in the summer with Ben lazing around on the grass, stealing glances at Sebastian. Ben is always first, even though he doesn't have to try very hard, or at all really. He's the rich golden boy, and Sebastian, who works so hard to help support his sister and niece, is a bit resentful.
As the relationship between Ben and Sebastian progressed (from competitors to friends to something more), I got caught up in the small moments between them. We get only Ben's POV, so Sebastian remained a bit of an enigma, but I adored Ben. I'm glad his dad finally saw him and realized that Ben was far more mature and responsible than he realized.
There is one lightly steamy scene here and not quite enough relationship development on page, but the sweet ending really won me over. Ben's dad turned out to be a great guy, and Ben's brother is all kinds of awesome (even if he sounds like a teen vs. a 9-year-old). I like to see supportive families in stories, especially holiday stories.
This would have been a 4 star read were it not for the unresolved side plot about Marco, Ben's friend. How did the play end, and what was he hiding on his arms? I wasn't sure what to make of that.
P.S. Marco's story is told in the second book of this series, True Colors, which is amazing.
“I’m desperate for you to forgive me. I would be the most fortunate guy in the world to be second in your life.”
I don't know how Anyta Sunday does it ... because after I finished this short story, my heart just ached. I swear, if I didn't read this (sneakily) at the office, I might already bawled and cried like a baby. I couldn't say that the story was sad, or angsty. I didn't think that Anyta was aiming for that either. But it was a subtle way of how the young love progressed, that it just grabbed my heart and squeezed the life out of it.
I admit that in the beginning, I didn't know where the story was going. I was also a bit weary with this being a new adult storyline, since YA/NA is not really my favorite genre -- one of the reasons I still haven't read the anthology, where this story first appeared.
Slowly, I was hooked. I was charmed with Ben and him collecting the bottles to make money, but then giving it to Sebastian who needed it more. I loved Ben's heart -- it shined like a precious diamond -- and what he did to Sebastian was what wrecked me in the end. It was beautiful, real, without agenda, and just MOVED me!
I loved Ben's family too -- even if Nico, his nine years old! brother felt more like a teenager. I loved the friendship. And I loved the originality feel to this story.
This was just okay. I may have a biased option though because I have read some of the best MM novels in my life in the past week or so.
That being said, it was a short novella (ish) that was more centered around learning the lesson of responsibility than the main MC's relationship.
This is very low steam - boarding on YA I would say - and the characters were a little flat. I have heard the second book is better than this one so I may continue on ;)
This was a cute shorty but I feel like it just had way too many things going on and not enough time focused on the relationship.
The story itself seemed more focused on the coming out, the lessons, the struggles than it did on us getting to know the boys together and understanding their relationship.
An ok short novella. It felt more of a compliment to True Colors than a story on its own right. The two MCs are adorable but they are not together enough. Seb is so busy with everything going on in his life, that they don't iteract much with Ben. There is not much steam at all, although both boys are super sweet. Free with Kindle Unlimited.
I read this right after finishing True Colors and I loved getting Ben and Sebastian's story as it flits around the edges of the larger story described in True Colors. Reading True Luck first would have been confusing and it works so much better reading it second.
I liked the challenge that Ben's father gives him and how Ben steps up and learns so much about having to work hard for something you truly want. Lovely story!
Short, cute and heartwarming. Around novella length, if I had to guess, but managed to fit a full story without making it feel rushed or like it was missing anything.
Another winner, yay!! The next story in the series True Colors comes out on the 14th March, and this story was actually in the truly wonderful Wish Come True anthology, which I read in December 2015. Bottle Boys may only be 60+ pages long, but Anyta packs so many feels into such a short read. Ben and Seb were adorable. 4.5 stars.
Part of the anthology Wish Come True this was one of my favorites.
Privileged Ben has been tasked by his parents to earn money to continue the high standards of Christmas for his younger brother. He gets a little sidetracked with his "down-on-his-luck" classmate Seb, and endeavors to help him out as much as possible, unable to resist falling for the good natured and tenderhearted guy.
Beautiful and understated, the true meaning of the holidays really shines through.
Short. Rushed. The characters are so lovely. I love them all: After an ultimatum from his father, Ben has to find a way to win 5000 dollars for the next Christmas. Otherwise his little brother Nico will not have Christmas this year. Throughout his search, he comes across someone who needs this money more than him. Between helping a friend in distress and organizing a big Christmas party, Ben makes the best decision. Lovely.
Adorable, not quite enemies to lovers, more like academic rivals to friends to lovers,
Ben is one of those gifted guys, clever, rich and charming, his doesn't need to work at anythung, so his dad decides it's time he learnt how. Sebastian is academically second to Ben, and works hard, like really hard. Jobs, looking after his niece, juggling assignments hard. The whole lovely little book moves organically, and while it is a love story- it's also about growing up and rediscovering your family.
I wasn't crazy about the idea of the wealthy, privileged MC financially rescuing his crush BUT I loved how both he and his father recognized their privilege and strove to check that privilege. Seeing them both grow, especially the way they grew, made happy and gave me warm fuzzies.
Ben and Sebastian are adorable, with really lovely hearts. I enjoyed the side characters as well, Ben's little brother, Nico, in particular.
This is my first Anyta Sunday and it won't be my last. I'm diving into True Colors now.
