Ten-year-old Mary comes to live in a lonely house on the Yorkshire moors and discovers an invalid cousin and the mysteries of a locked garden. Illustrated with stills from the 1993 film version.
A ten-year-old orphan comes to live in a lonely house on the Yorkshire moors where she discovers an invalid cousin and the mysteries of a locked garden.
Burnett's classic story of a disagreeable and self-centered little girl and her equally disagreeable invalid cousin is as real and wise and enthralling now as it was when it was first written over 75 years ago. The strength of her characterizations pulls readers into the story, and the depth inherent in the seemingly simple plot continues to make this sometimes forgotten story as vital to the maturation of young readers as Tom Sawyer and Little Women. Hague's illustrations enhance the story beautifully, capturing as they do, both the old-fashioned and timeless quality of the tale. The charm, clarity, and muted tones of Hague's paintings add dimension to each part of the tale. A reissue of an old classic to be treasured by a new generation of children (and their parents)!
Making a novelization of a movie already based off a very short children's book is a very strange move. The original book is great and the movie is one of my all time favourites, and while largely unnecessary, this book is also pretty good.

Plot: Mary Lennox is about nine years old, she lives in India with her parents but is always ignored by them; always having the servants attend to her. One morning Mary awakens but the servant by her bed is not her Ayah. An epidemic of cholera was spreading very fast leaving no one left to look after Mary. Orphan, with no father or mother, Mary is sent to live with her Uncle, Archibald Craven, whose very large and old estate is at the edge of a moor in Yorkshire, England. Taking her journey miles away from India, Mary will discover a new way of living; and will unfold the secrets in her uncle’s state. Mary discovers the secret garden’s key, which has been locked for 10 years. She follows the noise and to her surprise finds a small sick boy her age, living in a hidden bedroom. Soon they make their way to the gardens for fresh air and she shares the secret garden, the first time he's been outdoors in years. Colin spends every day in the garden, becoming stronger, learning how to walk and exercising. When Colin’s father returns from his journey, he finds the door of the secret garden unlocked and is shocked to not only see the garden in full bloom, the children in it, but his son running and looking like a normal kid.
Review: I saw the movie when I was a young tween, I never read the book, finding a copy at the public library, I was able to capture all the vivid characters with very descriptive information for each character, the garden, the similarities between Mary and Colin, the places Mr. Archibald Craven went to get away and forget about his situation and the loss of his late wife in the last ten years. I could feel many emotions while reading the book, especially when both Mary and Colin did not have the attention from their parents. The book teaches self image as both Mary and Colin struggle on their appearance fear, love, and magic. The book teaches the reader not to give up and always help someone in need. Finding a means to being happy and live a long time

not only was this book so amazing..but the movies are as well..so yah this is about a girl named Mary Lennox who lives in India with her parents. She is a very tempered 10 year old girl that has servants waiting on her hand and foot her whole life. Soon there is a sickness or hurricane that strikes India and every one in it dies, including her parents. So she goes to England to meet Mrs. Medlock, who is Mary's uncle Mr.Craven's housekeeper, and takes her to live with her uncle in Missleswate manor. When she goes there she is friends to Martha,Dickon, Marthas brother, and her sick cousin Colin. She uncovers a mysterious key, to an abandoned garden that has been shut up by Mr. Craven, since it was his wife's Mrs. Craven's garden. and has died in it. this is an incredible story full of adventure, magic, and friendship.
This is actually my favorite book of all time. It creates so much emotion and is really worth taking the time to read. It's about a little girl who comes from a very wealthy family but feels no love. She's basically a brat she gets what she wants and then goes away, her parents don't pay attention to her which probably caused her to act the way she does. When her house is broken into in India her parents send her off to uncles on a moore and there she is introduced to a whole new way of life. She sees struggle at its lowest points and happiness at its greatest. This book is a must read and I can see why it is such a classic, I would recommend this book anyone no matter what type of genres you prefer.
I found this book as I was going through bins of my childhood things. It’s been years since I’ve read my copy, and I couldn’t wait to relive the magic I felt while reading it as a child.
The story follows a recently orphaned child, Mary Lennox, from her home in India to her uncle’s home in England, Mistlewaith Manor. She is left in the care of her uncle’s servants, her time occupied by playing by herself in the gardens of the manor.
Mary becomes enchanted by the mystery of the secret garden, and with the help of a few friends, she eventually finds herself at home at Mistlewaith Manor.
My first encounter with this storyline was when in first grade I was shown this movie in class; I absolutely loved it. It captured my imagination and amazed me to the core. At the age of 16 I read the book- and the book as expected was more detailed. However, both the book and the movie are great in their own way. If you haven’t read it, read it and it’s an absolute must to watch the movie (but do avoid the newer movie cause it is not great). NOTE: It’s a big book and not all children feel confident to take it on so if you want to introduce a wonderful storyline to them- show them the movie.
This is one of my favorite books. I have read it twice now it is about mary lennox a very sooby little girl who lives in india with her parents that dont pay any attention to her when colera hits hard and she is sent to live with her uncle.Where she stumble upon a garden where life is great. I would defefinitly sugget read this to a child. I enjoyed this book because it gives you the ability to think into the unknown maybe there is a garden with magic powers
I read this book as a child and as an adult I still recall the magical thinking and feeling it left me with. I recall the way the book was so lovely in it's writing. It truly captured my imagination and allowed me to lose myself completely in the novel. I have spent many hours looking in charity shops and old books shops for a copy...as I want a vintage one for my collection!
The secret garden was a little boring at first but I give it 5 stars in the end because it got really interesting throughout the book. It had a happy ending and I love books that have happy endings or have mysterious endings. I recommend this book to anyone who would love a sort about friendship and people who wants to find out how a garden can bring people together.
a lovely book, that my Gran used to read to me, so brings back many happy memories, I love books with a secret to find out... mary was orphaned and came to the Yorkshire Moors, bleak and windy, so far removed from India's hot climate. she lives in this vast cold house and discovers many secrets....
Much better than the movie, In the book Mary appreciates a lot of the people around her (in the movie that emotion is not seen as much) There is a passion in this book to believe in something and it will happen.
This book had been on my bookshelf since I was a child and I have only just read it. I found it very enjoyable and even though it's never too late to read a book, I know that I would have enjoyed The Secret Garden just as much if I had read it when I was younger.
This story is and always will be a classic. With magic and mystery it was a calming story with moments that will send you crying. I love this story, it is one that will never get old.
I never read this book personally, my mom always read it to me. I think its a really good book and is a good one for mother and daughters to read together.
I love this book it took me on a new adventure! my eyes were hurting so bad but i didnt put the book down! I reccomend you read this amazing book! and i started it on the 20th!
Ok it's only an adaptation of the actual book but it's a clear summary for children and was one of my favourite books as a child. Now to read the original.
