The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power - Once you begin to walk the Mystic Path, an invisible "Guardian Angel" begins to watch over you - strewing life's golden treasures in your path - assuring you that every step of the way will bring you new victories, new rewards, new and exciting successes!
Vernon Howard began his writing career, in the 1940s, as an author of humor and children's books.
He began speaking on the principles of personal development in the late 1950s while living in southern California.
In the 1960s, he began writing books that focused on spiritual and psychological growth, emphasizing the importance and practice of self-awareness. By the early 1970s, he had moved to Boulder City, Nevada and had begun teaching spiritual development classes after being contacted by numerous individuals interested in his writings.
I'm telling you if you had to be stuck on a desert island with just one book The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power would be one hell of a good choice.
Okay, granted, it's a silly title, but this book is loaded with incredible insight. I could write ten reviews just to fit it all in.
The premise: we're living from a false self, which is the ego. Once we abandon that, we embrace higher consciousness and are free.
Yeah, sounds like new-age mumbo-jumbo but it's not. Howard knows what he's talking about.
He uses a boat as an analogy.
You realize that all that furious rushing around the deck does absolutely nothing to move the boat forward. You finally grasped the Cosmic Truth that the boat carries you; you don't carry the boat. You sense that your abandonment of control does not mean disaster after all, but, for the first time, an enjoyable voyage. Before, you thought the boat wold stop if you ceased pretending you were the captain. Now you know better.
And:
The abandonment of useless human effort is just the thing we need for contacting Higher Power. By abandonment I mean setting aside ego-directed drives, such as, planning, contriving, desiring, hoping, yearning, speculating, demanding, straining, claiming, influencing, dominating. All these interfere with the natural flow of the inner life. We contact the Higher Power only as we loosen our attachments to them. And then, at some magic moment, we change from driven men to carried men.
This book has been hardly read and hardly reviewed. That means it's a dog, right? Yeah, if you think so you're probably not reading this review. But these books that are passed over by the masses are often the very best. It's like something hides them from only those few people who have the capability to be influenced by them.
This is one of those books.
If your life is fab, maybe it's not for you. If your life could use some serious improvement, buy this book (in paper so you can underline it). You will not go wrong.
We must suspect that we are entirely different people than we thought we were.
First read this book about 30 years ago. Have gone back to it again several times over the years. There's something very special about it. After you read it, you'll see things differently in a positive way.
This book was a real shifter for me. I found it intriguing and practical. Some of the information was information that I was familiar with and it was nice to have it reiterated. All in all, it was refreshingly enjoyable.
This book and Supermind are two main books that cover the teachings of Vernon Howard. Both of them ask us to go beyond Conditioned Mind which is the main cause of our problems, not the external circumstances.
This book was thought provoking and improved my quality of life. With that being said, I don’t agree with some parts of it. I still recommend as it has some great meditation techniques.
Holy cow! How can this book not have more reviews? It is so good!
It took me forever to read it because I would read a little at night and then set it aside, sometimes for months. But when I would pick it up again, whatever I was reading was exactly on point for what I needed to hear. I think I was slowly digesting the contents and trying to implement the things he talks about.
I don't know how to review this other than to say that this book is true, and it will resonate with you (if you are ready to hear it). Even though he is saying the same universal truths, I really love his no-nonsense style, and the fact that it's relatively modern is refreshing.
I plan to re-read it at some point. I am currently reading The Power of Your Supermind, albeit at a much quicker pace. I might like that one even more!
Old school motivational psychology based on Buddhist principles with a deceptive and ridiculous title. Nevertheless its a pretty good book for someone looking for emotional literacy and unacquainted with mindfulness.
It's a good book, lots to think about, but also lots I did not understand or connect with on first reading. I plan to put ideas into practice and re-read in 9-12 months. Would recommend.
