Echoes

Rate this book
Pytheas mission was simple: land on New Ithaca and evacuate the colonists. But after their ship is damaged during descent and half the crew disappears, it is now a race against time to find the colonists and their crew, repair the ship, and evacuate the planet before it passes through an anomaly with enough radiation to kill them all.

However, the colonists aren’t eager to leave. Not only did they leave Earth to escape the brewing political war, they also found the ruins of an ancient civilization known as the Illonium on New Ithaca, and that discovery is too alluring to just abandon. Who were these mysterious beings, and why did they suddenly disappear without a trace? But when a new threat seemingly appears out of nowhere, it becomes a fight for survival.

Echoes is a complex tale of love, loss, and survival in an alien wilderness where only the strongest will endure.

Earth is in dire straits. Political turmoil and a deadly virus has made life on Earth difficult. Starting a colony on a distant planet seems like a good way to escape the evils that have invaded the home planet. A group of individuals embark on a journey across the galaxy to an Earth-like planet, New Ithaca. Little do they know that their journey on the space ship Odyssey will become an adventure of survival as their new home is hurtling towards a radiation contamination that will wipe them out almost instantaneously. Studies back on Earth have followed the events on New Ithaca and, against government approval, Odyssey has a following that is launching with a device that will carry them to the new Earth-like home in weeks, just in enough time to rescue the Odyssey crew and evacuate before the radiation event. Little goes as planned and both crews are met with an unstoppable force, a group of aliens who lived on this planet centuries in the past.

Marc Buhmann’s science fiction novel, “Echoes”, touches on many aspects of unexplored fantastical scientific possibilities: wormhole travel, time travel, life sustaining pods, distant planets in the galaxy, communicating devices that allow an understanding of alien dialogue, and much more. The story follows an exciting plot as each new episode leads up to a compelling climax. The reader doesn’t want to put the book down at this point. The only setback to this novel is the multiple jumps between times and setting, sometimes without a chapter heading to guide the reader. An exciting read overall and the reader will be eagerly anticipating book two in the series.
