Laney Pearson was shot at point blank range... With the help of his friend and colleague, Dr. Nathan George, Josh Stone managed to save her, giving them both a new start and a second chance at love. But when Laney's parents try to take their recovering daughter back to Missouri, Josh fears he'll lose her...possibly forever. A mysterious stalker and Laney's family aren't the only ones who want Josh and Laney apart... Jillian Stone has struggled with her own demons, always leaning on her brother Josh for support. When she sees him doting on Laney, spending days on end by her hospital bed, Jillian grows increasingly jealous. She pictures a life where Laney is gone and she and Josh can be closer...much closer. A familiar shadow still threatens the light... They thought Laney's stalker was completely erased from their lives, arrested when he tried to kill her. But they find it wasn't Laney's ex-boyfriend who tormented her for weeks on end, even if he was the one who pulled the trigger. They are now on the lookout for the real stalker, who becomes braver with each passing day, always in shadows, never creeping into the light... They fear he might be back to finish what he started...sending Laney to an early grave.
The first thing I've known about the first in the series is its title I liked the sound of, and since the book's digital I cast a look at the cover only when I downloaded it, this one really sort of had me scratching my head for a while - it definitely looked like some steamy romance I'm so not a fan of is involved... And yep! But luckily those places were few 😳.
The part with a biker on the cover relates to the beginning of this story about Skyler, a 17 yo guy who performs motocycle stunts. Skyler and his Mom Rebecca were interesting to follow and were one of the reasons I kept reading. Laney was, probably, my favourite character, but mainly I liked those parts when she was at work as a skillful and very supportive nurse, always treating her patients with a warm smile - I loved the dedication she had for her patients. Although the plot was predictable, I enjoyed this duology (except for the steamy parts, which were a huge drawback, they didn't add to the story at all but only made the reading experience less enjoyable, much less enjoyable) and liked the characters, despite the fact they seemed oblivious to obvious things. I'm glad I didn't hesitate to acquire the second part when I was only a few pages into the first book but already felt an emotional connection to the main characters. And! No graphic scenes! Somewhere at page 5 the story started to remind me of one of my favourite j-dramas Code Blue. At times it felt like I was watching a similar tv series because of all the medical field details I've actually never happened to meet in any other book I've read so far.
A couple of changes I was surprised by - the beginning of the follow-up was strange. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This is the sequel to ‘Shot in the Dark’. The first book ended on quite a cliffhanger, so you will definitely want to read that before you read this one. This also happens to pick up right where the first book left off so there is no recap before the continuation of the story.
Josh and Laney have worked together for a few years and they’ve just recently started dating when Laney starts receiving threatening messages. She ends up being shot while at work and she is in critical condition. Josh and his team of doctors are working diligently to save her while the detectives and Laney’s parents work endlessly to catch Laney’s stalker.
Who is Laney’s stalker? Will Laney pull through? Are her parents going to come to terms with the fact she’s an adult and can make her own decisions? What happens with Josh’s sister Jillian? I’m not going to spoil the ending so I’m not going to say much more about what actually happens. I will say that this is quite the page turner; I couldn’t put it down because I wanted to know so badly how it was going to end. I wanted answers to all my questions and the author kept me hanging on until I could get them. There are a couple surprise twists that will keep the reader guessing and intrigued. This is a great romantic suspense; there’s just enough romance in these books to keep the romantic genre fans happy, and just enough suspense & intrigue to keep the mystery genre fans interested. If you haven’t read either of these books, I definitely recommend them both!
I don't think I've ever clenched my jaw so much or so tight while reading as I did with this book. It was absolutely driving me nuts!
J.G. Sumner certainly knows how to write characters you have to hate. I could find no way to like, much less love, Laney's parents. They are a driving force in this book. They took the term loving yet overbearing parents to a whole new level. I wanted to reach into the words and strangle them in their sleep. What am I saying? I would do it while they are standing there wide awake making decisions about nearly thirty year old Laney as if she's three and can't think for herself. Ugh!
This is a great book and well written. Everything in the book is plausible. Things get ramped up while Laney is sedated. Weirdness starts flowing around Josh and there are some definite O.M.G. moments.
Find out if Laney and Josh can finally have their Happily Ever After.
I love this cover. I think that it is a great cover to depict the feel of the novel. This novel really starts off with a bang and doesnt let up. I loved the way J.G. Sumner told the story. It was very well thought out and this really showed through the characters and setting. A very wonderful Mysterious and Suspenseful Romance.
You will definitely want to have plenty of allotted reading time before starting this one. It was hard to put down. I was so engrossed in the story that I put off many of my important things to do. J.G. Sumner does a great job of creating a Romantic Suspense that keeps the reader invested and guessing.
I think the Romance was believable and unfolded smoothly which is always important. I don't like when Romances seem forced, this one seemed natural. Great not only Romantic Suspense but Suspense in general.
I loved the balance of Romance and Suspense in this novel. There is a lot going on and the characters have a lot they have to get through while trying to understand their budding relationship and fight for it. It is a solid romantic suspense.
J.G. Sumer first captivated me with her writing in A Shot in the Dark, so I was excited to read this novel. I love the way that she is able to draw me into her words and each and every scene. I feel like I have read a lot about stalker’s lately, maybe I am on a kick as I find the scenario compelling and it’s something that isn’t always taken as seriously as it should be. Stalking cases can escalate rather quickly and it’s unfortunate that while the victim tried to get help previously, there wasn’t enough “evidence” to help them. Josh and Laney were Heartwarming and real. I enjoyed their connection and their second chance to get things right.
I was seriously intrigued by this novel. I was such a fan of Laney in this novel. I think she was a character who has been through an ordeal, yet still wants to see the good in people.
I loved the growth these characters both showed. Laney with how she started to try and branch out and try to trust even thought she still lived in fear.
There is suspense and mystery in this novel and there are intense moments with a surprising and fun arc.
