About the author

Vairamuthu was born to Ramaswamythevar and Angammal of Mettur in a middle-class family. When he was four, the village gave way to Vaigai Dam and the family moved to Vadugapatti village, a farming community in Theni near Periyakulam.

The ambience of the village is said to have inspired him to write poems. According to him, Tamil and Rationalist movements of the sixties stimulated his poetic zeal. The speeches of Periyar & Anna, the writings of Karunanidhi and the works of eminent poets like Bharathi, Bharathidasan and Kannadasan and the life in the countryside shaped the young poet's thinking. At the age of fourteen, he was inspired by Thiruvalluvar's Thirukkural to write a Venba compilation of poetry, strictly adhering to the Yappu grammar rules of Tamil poetry.

He joined Pachaiyappa's college in Chennai where he was acclaimed as the best speaker and poet. While in his second year of B. A. and barely nineteen years of age, Vairamuthu published his maiden anthology Vaigarai Megangal. It was prescribed for study in Women's Christian College. Thus, he achieved the distinction of a student poet whose work was taken into the curriculum while he was still a student.

His second work, Thiruththi Yezhudhiya Theerpugal, in pudhu kavidhai (free verse) form was published in 1979. He made his film debut in the succeeding year when he set lyrics for Bharathiraja's Nizhalgal.

I got to know about this book from the debate that was televised on Vijay TV. I for some reason felt the debate was better than the book. We all know how great he is with his words and I have no authority what so ever in critiquing his work. But these set of stories for some reason just did not do it for me. There were a wide variety of stories but somewhere they were just stories and didn't go in depth to produce great memorable literature. The message or literary content was only skin deep in my opinion. There were few stories that stay with you, but again it was not because of the literary content but because the stories tugged your heartstrings. I wish Vairamuthu reduced the number, dug deeper within a smaller set and had produced much finer work. Maarkkam, Pakal Iruttu and Sirithaalaum Kanner varum were some of the stand-out stories.

This book vairamuthu sirukathaigal came to know after watching debate in vijay tv. When I was browsing through higginbothams books got a glance of this book and since already I was fond of vairamuthu s words thought of reading this book. As usual vairamuthu dint disappoint me and was flaunting with his poetic words. Some short stories seems to have happened for real. Happy to open this book at the start of new year 2016.

தமிழில் சிறுகதை என்றாலே புதுமைப்பித்தனும் ஜெயகாந்தனும் முதலில் வந்து விடுவார்கள்.
தமிழில் பல ஆளுமைகள் பலவிதமான சிறுகதைகளை வாசகனுக்குத் தினமும் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறார்கள் அதை வாசகனும் பருகிக் கொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறான்.

குறைந்தது ஒரு நாளைக்கு ஒரு சிறுகதை வாசித்தாலும் ஆண்டுக்கு 300க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுகதைகள் அதில் அடங்கும்.
அதில் அனைத்தையும் ஞாபகம் வைத்துக்கொள்வது என்பது சற்று சிரமமான காரியம். ஆனால் சில சிறுகதைகள் நம் வாழ்வியலோடு ஒன்றிப் போகும்போது அதை நாம் எக்காலத்திலும் மறக்க முடியாதபடி ஆழ்ந்து பதிந்து இருக்கும். அப்படி அதுபோன்ற சிறுகதைகள் அனைவராலும் எழுதப்பட முடியாது என்பது நாம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளத்தான் வேண்டும்.

பாடல்கள் கவிதைகள் நாவல்கள் இதில் மூன்றிலும் வைரமுத்து அவர்கள் புகழ் தமிழில் பிற எழுத்தாளன் கவிஞன் அடையாத புகழை அடைந்தவர். மிச்சம் வைத்திருந்தது இந்த சிறுகதை ஒன்றாக இருந்தது அதிலும் அவரின் தமிழைத் தூவி, சிறுகதையைக் கவிதையாக அல்லது கவிதையைச் சிறுகதையாக எழுதி இருக்கிறார். வெறும் சொற்றொடர்கள் எழுத்துக்களில் மட்டும் சிறுகதைகளை அளிக்காமல் அதில் தன் அனுபவம், கற்பனையையும் அள்ளி தெளித்திருக்கிறார் வைரமுத்து. இந்த புத்தகத்தில் மொத்தமாக 40 சிறுகதைகள் வருகிறது ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒரு விதம்.

7.4 ரிக்டர் என்ற சிறுகதையில் ஒரு நிலநடுக்கத்தில் சிக்கிய காதலைக் கவித்துவமாக எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

கணவன்-மனைவி-மகள் என்ற சிறுகதையில் குடும்பத்தில் ஏற்படும் குழப்பங்களுக்குக் காரணமாக அமையும் எதிர்மறை கருத்துக்களை எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

இறந்த காலங்கள் இறந்தே போகட்டும்,
புத்தருக்கும் அடிசறுக்கும்,
ராஜராஜன் போன்ற சிறு கதைகள் என்றும் நினைவில் இருக்கும் கதைகளாக அமைகிறது. வரலாறு, ஆன்மிகம், பொருளாதாரம், கிராம வாழ்க்கை, நகர வாழ்க்கை, திருமண வாழ்க்கை, ஜாதிக் கொடுமைகள், நவீனக் காலத்தின் நிகழ்வுகள், என்று அனைத்து வகையான தலைப்புகளும் அடங்கியவாறு இந்த புத்தகத்தில் எழுதியுள்ளார் கவிப்பேரரசு.

குறிப்பிட்ட மண் சார்ந்த அல்லது நபர்களைச் சார்ந்தோ அல்லாமல் வெவ்வேறு விதமான சிறுகதைகளை வாசிக்க ஆர்வமுள்ள நண்பர்கள் நிச்சயமாக இந்த புத்தகத்தை வாசிக்கலாம்.

There is some magnetic power in Mr. Vairamuththu sir writing. Very good short stories. (only who is fluency in tamil reading can enjoy and experience a lot)

புத்தகத்தின் தொடக்கத்திலே மற்ற சிறுகதை ஜாம்பவான்களைப் போல் இல்லாத ஒரு நடையையும் அடிப்படை கதைகளோ இருக்கப்போவது இல்லை என்று தெரிவித்தபடியால் சிறிது வித்யாசமான வாசிப்பாகவே உணரப்பட்டது. எல்லா கதைகளின் அடிப்படைகள் சமூகம் சார்ந்த பிரச்சனைகளை முன்னிறுத்தி இவை இருப்பதனால் நிறைந கதைகள் நம்மை நெகிழ வைத்து இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால் எனக்கு நெருடலாக இருந்த சிலவற்றுள் அவை முகம் சுழிப்பவையாக எனக்கு இருந்தன. பெண்களை வர்ணிப்பதும் அவர்களின் அங்கங்களை அத்தனை அத்துமீறும் வார்த்தைகள் கொண்டு கையாண்டது எல்லாம் இதை தாண்டித் தான் கதைகளை கடந்து ஆக வேண்டுமள என்ற எரிச்சல் மேலோங்கியது. ஆண்களை வருணிக்க அதிகமாக அவர்கள் பரட்டைத் தலை எடுப்பான மேல் எழுந்த பற்கள் அழுக்கு சட்டை என்ற வருணனை அத்தனை முறண்பாடுகள்.

சிறு வயது முதலே தினசரி வரும் பத்திரிக்கைகளின் வார இதழ்களில் கூட பெண்களின் வரைபடங்கள் எல்லாம் அங்கங்கே பாகங்கள் தெரிய சேலைகள் இடம் மாறி இருப்பதாகவே அதில் வந்து இருக்கிறது.

இன்று படங்கள் இல்லை என்றாலும் எழுத்துக்கள் மூலம் அது அரங்கேறுவது சரியாக இல்லை !

உங்கள் நேரத்தையும் விரயமாக்காமல் என் நேரத்தையும் மேற்கொண்டு வீணாக்காமல் ஒரே வரியில் இப்புத்தக வாசிப்பு அனுபவத்தை சொல்வதென்றால்,”அதுல ஒன்னும் இல்ல…கீழ போட்ரு!” என்ற நகைச்சுவை காட்சியும் “எந்த பயனும் இல்லை!” என்னும் மு.க.ஸ்டாலின் அவர்களின் meme உம் தான் சட்டென மூலையில் தோன்றுகிறது!

முன்பே வாசித்திருக்கும் இவரது ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகத்திலும் தன் எழுத்தை தானே சற்று உயர்த்தி பிடிப்பதை போல முன்னுரைகள் இருக்கும்.அது இதற்கும் பொருந்துகிறது.”சிறுகதையாற்றுப்படை” என்னும் தலைப்பில் அமைந்துள்ள அதில்,”’புதுமைப்பித்தன் இறந்த ஆண்டில்தான் நான் சிறுகதை எழுத வந்தேன்’ என்ற ஜெயகாந்தன் வாக்குமூலத்தைப்போல ஜெயகாந்தன் வாழ்ந்த இறுதி ஆண்டில்தான் நான் சிறுகதை எழுத வந்தேன்.” என்னும் ஒரு வரியை எழுதியுள்ளார்.முழுப் புத்தகத்தையும் வாசித்து முடித்த பிறகு அடிக்கோடிட்டுள்ள இதை மீண்டும் வாசித்த எனக்கு…

வைரமுத்து சிறுகதைகள் -Like the authors poetic writing style. Inspiring and refreshing to read not just readers.. but for aspiring Writers as well. Highly recommended :)
