Brea was born a Second, a lowly class of people in the Lexcon society. But she also bore the birthmark that destined her to marry a Gatekeeper, the “superheroes” of their world. Some called her destiny a great privilege. She called it doomed to a cage with no key.
Gatekeepers were born and raised to ensure time remained untainted and unchanged, but Brea saw them as overlords who looked down on her kind… on Seconds.
Forced to marry Gatekeeper Jax Winters, Brea vows not to complete the ritual bonding with him until she can talk with council about how Seconds are treated. She plans to use her newfound status to help the plight of those born like her.
But she never dreams of the twist her life will take, moving her into a higher position than she’d ever dreamed. Will she and Jax always be at odds, or will their hearts bond together as their souls already have? Will Brea change the future of Lexcon, or will she be forever doomed to live life in the dark?
USA TODAY Bestselling romance author Shannyn Leah loves olives, lip gloss and reading (and writing) romance novels.
Currently you'll find her lost in her writing cave as she's co-writing an 8-book YA Fantasy series with her nine-year-old nephew, C.S. Cowell. They are launching a Kickstarter May 3rd, 2022 where you can purchase their eBooks, paperbacks, RARE hardcovers, and Imperium-themed swag!
Her love of words started at an early age and soon grew until, during her teenage years, she’d started writing her own novels. When her mom pushed to finally publish some of the stories, she quickly amassed a collection of romance series.
In 2018, she joined romance author Kelly Moore and together, they co-wrote the first season of The CRD series.
Alongside Connie Dave, Brea Viragh, and Nikki Lynn Barrett, Shannyn is one of the four founder's of a Cinnamon Bay Romance. Readers can immerse themselves in love stories based in a small-town book world centered around a Matchmaker Trio and mythical love spice. You never know what the Trio of Trouble will do next.

Shannyn would love to get to know her readers as you get to know her (just don’t send her any carrots!)
Shannyn Leah has created a wonderful world with time jumpers, unborns, elders, gatekeepers and seconds. These all work together to make an amazing adventure with romance, danger, and intrigue. This is a fantastic book. I hope she carries in with the Winter family. I need to read more about them all. I love time travel and she really aced the time travel aspects!
The story is different from her earlier work yet it contains the same type of strong likable characters that we recognize from her other books. She certainly knows how to bring us wonderful men like Jax and confident women, like Brea that want to make a mark on the world. I loved the interaction between the characters and just the unique connection that they shared.
Growing up as a Second, Brea has always been taught that you do what you are told, don't ask questions and never fight your destiny. Being controlled her entire life has filled her with so much hurt and anger. Is it any wonder she's resistant when it comes to her new husband and his family? How can she be happy when all her decisions are being made for her? And how can she embrace her new life and accept her future when she is filled with so many doubts?
From the moment Jax first laid eyes on Brea, he knew she was his soulmate. He loved her almost instantly but knew right away that she didn't return his feelings. He doesn't understand why she won't complete the bonding ritual with him but he will not force her to do something she does not want to do. She has to accept everything on her terms and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are destined to be together. He'll definitely have his work cut out for him when it comes to his feisty little firecracker who is full of sass. But her fight and determination is one of the things he loves most about her.
Brea and Jax definitely had a rocky start to their marriage but the more time they spend together, the closer they become. Watching these two find the strength and the willingness to fight for a cause they believed in was one of the things I loved about this book. They didn't take the commands of the Elders and Jax's parents sitting down. They fought for what they knew was right and refused to back down.
I have only read a couple of time travel books so this was a "step outside of my comfort zone" kind of read. And I have to say that I am SO glad I took that step! It didn't take long for me to get sucked in to the Lexcon society. I had a very hard time putting the book down! There were twists that I honestly did not see coming. I love when an author can keep me on my toes.
If I had one complaint it would be that there were a couple things that came up but were never addressed. I can't say much more than that because I don't want to give anything away. My hope is that, since it's part of a series, they will be addressed in one of the other books. We shall see! ;)
And speaking of the other books... I cannot wait for the next book in this series to be released! I'm definitely looking forward to more of the Winters family... especially Gabby's story! I don't know why but there was just something about her. I felt connected to her right away. I love it when that happens! :)
This is my very first book by Shannyn Leah and I was not disappointed! I love that she decided to release a clean version of Winters Rising and that I was able to receive an ARC! I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more clean reads by her!
And this casting! *dreamy sigh* I love these two!
*I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.*
Winters Rising was recommended to me by a friend. Normally, I don't read contemporary or even time travel romances, but this book was a nice break from my usual reads. What I enjoyed immensely was the interesting story line that weaved throughout the romance. It wasn't something I'd read, or really even seen, until this book. Brea and Jax's relationship was really all this story needed for conflict, because most of the arguments stemmed from them being forced to be together as "soulmates."
Brea can come off a few times as overtly stubborn, frustratingly so, but she has a reason and back history that supports this personality. Jax, while definitely all alpha, did his best to support and prove to her that he wasn't after her simply because they were soulmates. Overall, their relationship was interesting to watch develop.
If you enjoy a different take on time travel and would like an easy read full of intrigue, then I would highly suggest this book as your next read.
I am so excited to announce that Winters Rising will be my first book available with a "Clean Edition"! Yay! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible!

I have read all of the By the Lake series of Shannyn Leah's books and have loved them all! Time travel books are not usually what I would chose to read but coming from her I knew I had to give it a try. I was not disappointed at I was actually amazed that I was into the book before I knew it.
Jax and Brea eventually become a beautiful loving couple. It does however take time to lead up to it. But I always enjoy a little playfulness first.
Brea is a strong and extremely stubborn in the beginning. I like a strong woman as the leading lady. She does not want to play buy the game at first. That is all I can say as not to reveal to much before you read this book.
Jax has a high place in this society but he is a humble man. He is a smokin' hot alpha male that follows his heart. He is a patient man and he does not push Brea even though he is being presered to do so.
Shannyn Leah has delivered another well written book full of suspense, romance and its comical as well. This book has action packed into every chapter. Shannyn takes on a travel through time that will have you giggling and sitting on the edge of your seat to see what is going to happen. This book is intended to be a trilogy but can be read as a stand alone. I must say I have never been into sci-fi or timetravel but Shannyn you shocked me and I am ready to read the next one.
This book took me a little time to get into and it never truly captured my attention completely however it was a good book. Conceptually this book was amazing with a new plot line that I have never read before which was a welcome change for me as a avid historical/paranormal/sci-fi/contemporary romance reader. The only thing that kept me from being completely pulled into the book was Brea. Don't get me wrong, I admired the fact that she wanted to change what she felt was wrong with her society, even to the point of going against her very soul. But there was just something that bugged me about her. I think it was because she was so stuck in her own wants and desires that she didn't think of the big picture that involved her new family. But that may just be a trait that I prefer, but besides that this book was amazing. The plot line was completely new, the characters were amazingly connected, and the writing style managed to show me what she was saying without saying to much. Overall this was a great read and many readers will fall in love with this series and will forever be an avid reader of Ms Shannyn Leah. I know I am looking forward to seeing how this series works out and so will you if you just give this book a chance. P.S you are going to really want to focus in the beginning so that you can understand the terminology.
Just a wonderful book covering the Gatekeepers and the seconds. I loved the interaction between Jax and his family and Brea, his soulmate. It makes the book interesting and very emotionally satisfying. I can not wait for the next book in the series. This Winters family is awesome.
The class system is strong in the Lexcon society. To be born a Second is to be born to be looked down upon, unless you carry a birthmark that matches that of a Gatekeeper, then you are “elevated,” not quite good enough to be considered first class, but assumed to be very fortunate to have been raised from the lowly position you were born to. Apparently, Brea, born a Second and destined to marry Gatekeeper Jax missed that “be grateful” memo because her feisty spirit and independent attitude has the powerful Winters family all in a tizzy! And this is where I do a fist pump for Shannyn Leah and her fresh, new tale, Winters Rising!
Gatekeepers really are important but their gifts are a product of genetics. Their “assignment” in life is to keep the timeline flowing smoothly, with no hiccups or disastrous changes that could change the future because it changed the past! Got that?
Brea is determined to get her way, she refuses to complete the bonding process, in spite of her growing feelings for Jax until she has her chance to be heard by the high council, meanwhile, will the friction between Jax and Brea ignite in a fiery conflict of doom or will Brea find a strong ally as she discovers how important she really is?
Ahh, matters of politics never mesh with matters of the heart, add time travel, the unknown, deceit and a horrible secret uncovered and once again, Shannyn Leah proves she is an author of great imagination and creativity! From start to finish, expect to feel your hackles rise, your emotions twist and even a few chuckles to break through. And the time travel? Well, I believed in it, especially when I saw how time traveled forward while I told myself, just one more page, just one more...
Shannyn Leah has done it again, all while changing up genres and taking us down a path filled with fantasy, fabulous characters and just the right amount of romance budding, in spite of Brea and Jax’s different views and lives. Then again, if Jax were as smart as they say, I’m sure he knew he had met his match in his new wife! Brea, you are fantastic!

ATTENTION! WINTERS RISING COMES IN TWO VERSIONS: SWEET & CLEAN OR SIZZLING & SPICY! GET YOUR FANTASY FIX YOUR WAY!
Series: Lexcon Time Travel - Book 1 Publisher: Carlex Ruby Press; 1 edition (October 25, 2016) Publication Date: October 25, 2016 Genre: Fantasy | Time Travel Print Length: 242 pages Sweet & Clean: Amazon Sizzling & Spicy: Amazon For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
Time-travel stories can be a bit difficult to pull off. At times, the plot will get confusing, or things will seem too unrealistic. Not with this book, I’m happy to say. Then again, it’s not a normal time-travel story in my eyes. It’s a YA love story with some paranormal aspects and with a refreshing take on ‘time rips’ and people who are gifted.
At the center of the story are two young adults at the brink of discovering who they really are: Brea, a Second with a stubborn streak and sass as well as smartness, and Jax, a Gatekeeper who’s about to have his world turned upside down. I liked it immensely that Brea wasn’t portrayed as a weakling, though I’d have loved to see even more of her special powers. She always stood up to Jax and held her ground, and even though Jax was also a hero full of strength and determination, he was by no means a stereotypical alpha hero. I found the Elders fascinating too, especially after their secret was revealed.
The book ends with a ‘happy for now’ and a cliffhanger, but it’s more than just a teaser because it has a strong message to convey. Beneath the story of two people forced to bond and realizing there is more than physical attraction and oppressive rules, there is a lot that can be read between the lines: criticism of society, of a select few being blessed with everything while others are expected to blindly obey, thoughts on abortion, brainwashing and relationships, and also advice to find one’s true destination and soulmate and to believe in the power of love.
I must say for my first time traveling book . This one was pretty good . The story revolves around Brea and Jax Winters . Brea is a lower class citizen in Lexicon she is called a second . But she also betrothed to the Gatekeeper, Jax Winters . Jax can time jump and when bonded to his soulmate there is so much more they can do . But alas his betrothed is headstrong and wants to change the way things are done. Will they survive the fates of Lexicon and most of all will they survive each other . The characters in this book are developed and you want to cheer for them . Jax is an alpha male and is trying to keep Brea safe but he is so block headed, you kind of want to slap him a few times . Brea is a strong girl but she also has a vulnerability to her , she has basically been lied to for most of her life . She doesn't want to be deemed second class and she wants to fight it all . When they are together there is an attraction and there is a need and a want . They both can't deny . The rest of the cast of characters is Declan and Gabrielle Jax's brother and sister . Then we have the elders who you really can't trust at all . They seem nice but well you know the saying never trust an nice guy wearing white . I truly enjoyed this book but there were a few times where I felt it just a little confusing and I had a hard time figuring it out . Other then that I liked the idea and the story read fast . I started it this morning and had it read by this afternoon . I would add this book to your summer reading list
This book started off great but then slowly lost steam as it progressed (or maybe I just slowly lost interest in the storyline). I loved the premise of this book, a society of time travelers and different classes of people in that society sounded like a great basis for a book. And I enjoyed that story line as it weaved throughout the romance immensely. If I had to sum up this book very quickly I'd say: Not so average girl. Hot guy. Some irritating family members. Interesting conversations. Time travel. Secrets. I'd go as far as saying that this is definitely a good read but not so much impact. It's the kind of book that can be easily forgotten even after all the unanswered questions we're left off with after we finish the book (I hope at least some of them get resolved in next installments of the series). Still worth reading though. Besides, it's not slow-paced. In fact, you wouldn't even realize how far you've gotten onto it then, you realize it's already the last chapter.
My final rating: 3.5 stars
***I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This was my first book by this author. This was a sci -fi romance with implied sex. It is a book that I don't usually read but I enjoyed it. It speaks to overcoming many obstacles, least of which, is an expected and arranged destiny to find one's happiness in life. This book was well written. It had great flow and easy to follow.
I received an arc copy in exchange for an honest review. Shannyn Leah is a new author to me. I really enjoyed this book. Brea was born a second, a lowest rank of the population, but she was also born with a birth mark that destined her to marry a gatekeeper Jax. Jax is also one of the highest in his hierarchy, he was raised to keep the balance of time. Brea does not like being told what to do, and has vowed not to complete the marriage ceremony. Will Brea accept her destiny and marry Jax in time to balance time. Or will she once again be forced to do what he has vowed not to do?. I was able to follow the characters and I enjoyed the plot. I would definitely recommend this book to all my fellow readers.
A truly great read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The supernatural elements were compelling and interesting and the characters and their chemistry and problems were real and heartfelt. I can't wait for book two!
An interesting time travel romance featuring Jax and Brea Winters. It was face paced and well written. Not your normal time travel story. Lots of action and suspense and a little cliffhanger at the end. You will enjoy this book.
The premise of this story is intriguing and sucked me right in. I thoroughly enjoyed Brea and Jax's story. It proves you may not always know who you are. The writing engaged me and kept me hooked to beyond the end. I'm now looking for the next in series.
This is one of those reads where you care less about the characters and more about the subject. I'm still a little confused about the seconds, and unborns, but I want to know more about it all, the Lexicon, their secrets, and their society. I must also point out that this is not a sizzling or spicy read in any way.
Not many authors can write a believable time ravle story but Shannyn definitely nailed it! I couldn’t believe how quickly I was drawn in but it was so easy to get lost in the pages if this book. It’s well thought out and perfectly played out. I was not bored for a single second. I enjoyed every page! I hope that there is more to come.
Author Shannyn Leah created a first class beginning to a new series in her novel, Winters Rising. Creating a new world order of citizens, Leah, skillfully wove her time travel story.
They are the Gatekeepers who insure time is not disrupted and events do not change. Seconds bond and marry Gatekeepers. Each carries a birth mark on their body. This mark calls to its mate.
Brea is a Second and unsatisfied with her lot in life. She is more than a second and breeder for her Gatekeeper, Jax. As a result, Brea's determined not to bond with Jax, until she can talk to the Council about the injustice in the Second and Gatekeeper system. Married but unbonded, Jax and Brea have a turbulent relationship filled with anger, prejudice, misconception, and of course, attraction. Evil is also afoot in the Lexcon community. Someone is trying to disrupt time and create chaos.
Brea and Jax will find mystery, intrigue, and perhaps love await them. Brea's destiny written long ago has far-reaching effects. Can she and Jax find common ground to foster love and companionship? Will they ferret out the villain and stop their evil intentions? Is change in the wind for Lexcon?
Grab a comfort seat, my time travel fantasy novel review of Winters Rising follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
First let me say, Shannyn Leah, crafted an original world filled with intriguing characters and situations. The structure of her world was easy to follow and visualize. Beginning with a mystery man creeping outside a Victorian house, Leah, hooks the reader immediately, as she begins weaving her plot lines and fast forwards.
Secondly, Leah skillfully portrayed the disparage in the classes of her world. As in the real world, one class always feels they are superior to another. The same occurs in Leah's world. The Gatekeepers seen as and believe they are above the Seconds.
Furthermore, her character development was continuous throughout the novel. As a result, the reader watches Brea grow from an angry defiant girl to a mature woman. Brea's character is also strong and independent, never showing fear of Jax. She is willingly to stand up for what she believes, darn the consequences.
Jax's character is a great hero. He feels with his heart and soul. After a few false starts, Jax finally discovers how to handle his new wife. He falls fast and hard for Brea, while she fights it every step of the way.
The villain of the novel was a shock, as Leah gives the reader several worthy characters to choose from. Needless to say, my choice was wrong. I found the pace smooth and fast as Leah leads the reader to the finish line. The secondary characters added depth to the story and left openings for additional books in the series.
Finally, in concluding my time travel fantasy novel review, I found Winters Rising, a solid story, clean and well-written. I look forward to the next book in this series as Leah expands her world.
WINTERS RISING RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
I would not hesitate to buy this book for my self or a friend. Winters Rising does not contain sex and would be suitable for anyone 13+ and above. With solid writing, an original story-line, and well-developed characters, Winters Rising will give hours of entertainment.

A really great time travel story with a sweet romance, lots of plot twists to keep you captivated and amazing characters. A real page turner, you won't want to put this one down until you're done!
I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
I love the original plot and the characters. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, BAM!, there was another twist. I can't wait to read the next book and find out what happens next. Great book!
This book was given to me for honest opinion. A time travel romance. It's very entertaining, intriguing and very well written. I'm looking forward to the next book. A must read. This book kept me on my toes to find out the end of this book. Absolutely a great book.
The author, Shannyn Leah, gave me an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for my review.
I wanted to read this book as I'm a sucker for time-travel books with a dash of romance. The cover looks so beautiful!!Loved the detailing of the Winter’s crest.
The book starts with a mysterious man traveling to the future and altering the future of the Lexcon( time traveling society of elders, Gatekeepers and Seconds). The main character, Brea, a Second whose life changes when she realizes she is chosen to marry a Gatekeeper( time travelers) as she bears the mark on her neck. Gatekeepers are always born as triplets. I knew right then the first book in this series will focus on the first born of the triplets.
Brea is one bad ass women. She refuses to complete the ritual bonding with her husband, Jax Winters. She feels that Seconds are not treated equally as the Gatekeepers and they are kept in dark regarding the council matters. Brea wants to fight the council for the status of the Seconds.
Jax Winters, Gatekeeper, first born and his kids with Brea will be the next generation triplets to be Gatekeepers. He cares deeply for Brea and defends her when his family members look down at Brea. He slowly falls in love with Brea by the end of this book. Jax is the perfect husband.
I loved how the author included both Brea and Jax’s POVs in the book. There are many funny moments in the book especially Gabrielle (Jax’s sister). Her mouth doesn’t have a filter and love when Brea and Gabrielle team up against Jax. The romance between Brea and Jax is hot and sizzling.
The minus for me was that Brea and Jax keep fighting a lot. They have a romantic moment and Jax says something which upsets Brea and they start fighting. They resolved their issues and confess their feelings only in the last part of the book. Another thing was that the book started two days after Brea and Jax’s took their vows. Wish the author included had their POV when Brea and Jax realized that they were going to be bonded. I felt we don’t know the backstory of Brea and Jax which I hope will be explained in the sequels.
I received an ebook free of charge from the author for an honest review.
I have always loved time travel themed books and so when I came across this book's blurb, I was interested to read it. The author is new to me so I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading it. The book cover is clean and attractive but I feel it doesn't make any connection with the plot.
The starting had me energised. I was intrigued with Brea's life and her thoughts. But it quickly turned to mostly whining on her part. Though she is strong she doesn't let out that strength for everyone to see till the near end. She is headstrong and very stubborn in her views. Nothing short of disaster slows her down. Jax is pretty good in his role as the Gatekeeper but he vacillates a lot in regard with Brea. Most times I felt he could have just shown his feelings which would have reduced half the conflict.
The side characters were a selective lot. There weren't that many to get confused. The Winters' family had me liking and disliking them in turns. I loved Eva though! She was my favourite because of her down to earth nature. Victor and Declan, both ended up on my hitlist with their attitudes. I feel more information could have been given about the council and the Elders. It felt lacking in that area.
The world building was unique and interesting enough to make me continue the read. The concept of time travel in terms of Gatekeepers is pretty well established in the story. The plot and the pace were well suited to each other. There were few twists and turns to keep the tale intriguing. The dialogue was natural in most parts. The banter between Jax and Brea, at times, felt like the squabbling between kids.
As a fantasy book, it created a different world to get lost in easily while the romance part was given enough importance but it felt lukewarm sometimes. The ending was pretty good. It has me all excited for the next book. All in all, it was a good tale.
I received an arc of this book, and I am so glad I read it! It was a great book! This was my first time reading a time travel book and I was not disappointed. Brea is so headstrong, and Jax is a total alpha male. I am anxiously awaiting the next book!
Wow, I really loved this story. Starting right from after the vows and the disappointment Brea experiences still not knowing her new husband at all 3 days after their marriage and not having bonded or consummated their union yet, we are drawn right into this mystical world. Brea is a Second meaning she was born to serve her Gatekeeper husband, Jax, who is rich and powerful and very hot. But it also means she had no choice in who she was to bond to nor a chance to get to know her soulmate. Her whole life she was raised to fear him and bow down to him. Except Brea isn’t the bow down type of girl. So she rebels against everything and ignores the messages he is sending. She distrusts the bond telling her he is what her soul craves. Jax is actually the perfect husband. He knows Brea needs time. He quickly discovers that the world outside his mansion is not what he thought it was and makes every effort to get to know Brea and give her the space and time she needs to adjust to her knew life. But when Brea tries to take on the council when they have already sparked their ire by not bonding immediately, he knows he needs to save her from herself so he takes her on a time travel rip which turns out to be anything but routine. This book is really about learning to communicate to solve problems and trusting your intuition. Learning to trust yourself and your belief in what is right can be very hard and it certainly is for Brea. Trusting someone else when she doesn’t even trust herself is even more difficult. It was nice to see the male character forcing the female character to sit down and talk things out when so often it is the other way around. A very enjoyable and enticing read. I will be coming back for the 2nd installment.
