Tooth & Claw #2

The Healing & The Dying

Doing the right thing could destroy everything…

Tooth & Claw, Book 2

Levi, Ian, and Darius escaped death-by-wolf-pack by the skin of their teeth, but they’re not out of the woods. The wolves are relentless. Help from humans? Not likely. Their only hope is a vampire commune in remote western Canada—if they make it in one piece. Even then, there’s no guarantee they’ll be offered sanctuary.

The first challenge is to get there. Sunlight is deadly. Money is dwindling. Police and wolves alike are on the hunt.

Worse, Levi hasn't recovered physically or emotionally from the accident that broke several of his bones and killed his best friend. He desperately wants Ian or Darius to turn him, which would heal his wounds, speed their escape, and sever his last tie to the wolves that made his life hell.

Yet Darius hesitates, caught between his desire to help his lover, and fear that once this is all over, Levi and Ian will have no use—or desire—to keep him in the picture. And that’s assuming they all make it to the end of this alive…

Contains two vampires and a werewolf who would really like to just sit down somewhere and lick their wounds, but are too damned busy stealing cars, avoiding sunlight, eluding police, arguing, jumping off roofs, and plotting new and innovative ways to weasel past customs. Oh, and plenty of scorching hot sex between three very, very dirty boys.

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

I can't believe I forgot to write my review!! And crappity crap crap!! I finished it days ago and I have kinda forgot a lot of the story. So I will start with the easy part first. The narration. Yeah, I listened to book 1, and I decided to listen to book 2 as well since it's available at my library. The narration is still not great. This would have been soooooo much better had it been narrated by someone who puts more emotion into the reading, like Joel Leslie (he does paranormal super well).

But, I was still able to enjoy the story despite the flat narration. I simply put my own emphasis on certain parts and that helped.

On to the story itself - this is a continuation (obviously! lol) of book 1, and it picks up where book 1 left off. I do like the characters and find their connection very well done. What I don't like is the constant running and hiding and fighting and OMG will the drama never end!!!! I didn't agree with how they would do certain things (like sneaking back into the US from Canada), and wanted to yell at them that there were much better ways.

Again this one ends on a cliffhanger and I will be continuing with the series, just not sure when exactly. And I will be listening to the audio since it's at my library, but I don't like it. *fierce face* I do recommend this story, just know there is a LOT of stuff going on and the book(s) could have been much shorter if parts had been left on the cutting room floor. Overall good and a different take on being vampire and wolf shifter. 3 stars because the drama never ended. ;)

3.5-4 stars. The Healing and the Dying is a paranormal/shifter ménage action thriller romance and the sequel to the Given and the Taken. And you should read the first book before hitting this because I think events in the book, the characters, their relationships, and the overall world they live in will make way more sense.

Witt's series is set in an alternative now where vampires and werewolves both exist and are known about. For some reason (which I don't think is totally explained), wolves are way more accepted in this world and have way more power, partially because so many of them work in law enforcement and such. Vampires are exotic and sexualized by humans, but seem to get the shaft in general and there doesn't seem to be "human rights" laws between the species to really protect them.

(I'm not going to go on about world-building too much since for the few shifter/paranormal/vampire books that I've read, I usually just "go with the flow" and don't question too much unless something is really jarring me out of the story. This might mean that I'm over-forgiving compared to other readers. For the most part, I could go with the flow on Witt's world here.)

This sequel follows the continuing flight of Levi, Darius, and Ian as they escape further into Canada, trying to elude the Levi's wolf pack and the authorities in general. Levi is still severely injured from the events that ended book 1, and the three struggle to find a safe haven while also debating whether to ease Levi's current pain by converting him to a vampire, a shift that would heal him faster, but permanently change him physically.

I'm not a huge ménage fan, partially because I'm so damn lazy and it sounds like a lot of work to maintain all those relationships equally, but I think Witt handles it well and allows the reader to care about everyone involved. In the first book, she did a good job of building an understandable progression of how the three get together and learn how to depend upon and love each other, and the sequel continues that development, but this time with the added "third wheel" conflict as Darius wonders if he will be abandoned once they're in the clear, and Levi angsts about whether his injuries will endanger the other two.

Another thing that I liked is how Witt reinforces connections. In the first book, Ian and Levi had a deep connection with their "mate bond" which near the end of the book had to be severed to protect Ian from the enclosing wolf pack tracking them. Back to the "third wheel" conflict, Levi then felt disconnected from Darius and Ian since the other two shared a bond built on vampire conversion, a connection that allows them to feel and track each other's heartbeats. In this book, Witt reinforces the connections tying the three together, and I appreciate how she is continually interlocking them, one to one, two to one, three together. It's those deepening connections and relationships that is probably my favorite part of the series.

The parts that I wasn't crazy about:

The angst over whether to convert Levi felt like a third of the book, and that's one of my main quips about this series in general is that the characters over-angst a lot. Admittedly, there is a lot of guilt flying around, and these boys feel really bad about themselves and some of their past choices, which is fine for character growth and development, but at times the angst and mental hand-wringing felt very repetitive and slowed the pace down. (You might have cut a 100 pages from book 1 if you trimmed down the angst and debating about what to do.)

A lot of the book is fleeing, which at times felt slow and repetitive also. With that said, two BIG character events happen that changes things, and is probably shifting the story to the final arc (if this is a trilogy) so this isn't a book to skip either. I do think it could have been trimmed down to be a tighter installment, because realistically, not a ton happens to these boys outside of the two big character events.

Below are some spoilers and questions for some of the events near the end. Don't read if you want to be surprised.

For those who are stressed out readers like me, there isn't a terrible cliffhanger at the end. My guess is that the events in this volume might be shifting everything to a new understanding about wolves, vampires, (and humans.)

Even though I had some issues with both these books, I'm still on board for book 3 since I do like the characters, I appreciate how much they care about each other, and I'm interested to see where Witt takes things from here.

This was very disappointing. It felt like L.A. said "Crap, I have to get that vampire book done" and just threw something together as fast as she could.
The plot was... well.. .. it picked up where the last book left off and then didn't go anywhere. They're on the run. That's it. And the chemistry between the characters was almost non-existent, which is very unlike L.A. Witt. I don't know if I'll read the third one. Maybe. But this book took all the promise of the first one (which I expected to not enjoy and ended up loving) and flushed it so we'll see.

Considering the way book one ended, I was on pins and needles beginning this second book of the 'Tooth and Claw' series. So very much has happened already and I had a pretty good feeling that this story would be packed full of action, intrigue, mystery, and oh so hot sex. I was looking forward to Ian, Darius, and Levi getting their happy ever after, although I was pretty sure I might be loco for thinking that was going to happen. I really liked that this book picked up pretty much right where book one ended. Levi is suffering, in a huge way, both physically, from all the injuries he received in the motorcycle accident, and emotionally, from Selena dying. Ian is a mess because he killed three people in order to protect Levi and Selena. And Darius is trying to hold everything together and figure out where they need to go.

The decision made, they slowly begin their trek west and northwest, heading to Prince Rupert where another vampire commune exists. Traveling is difficult as they're limited to nighttime, the available money is dwindling quickly, and tension has been created by Levi insisting he wants to be turned and Darius refusing to do it. Darius has very valid reasons and he doesn't want to condemn Levi to life as a vampire just because he's in pain and feels like he's slowing them down. Of course, everything blows up when they reach their destination and are summarily denied help by the vampires and turned away with no idea of where to go.

Now, they're stuck, literally. Levi still has broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a messed up knee he can't put any weight on. In his pain he asks Ian to promise him that if they get in a situation where Levi can't move fast enough, Ian and Darius need to leave him to save themselves. He doesn't get his promise, but he gets something I wasn't expecting. And, no, I'm not saying what. That would be spoiling it for everyone. They come up with a new plan to head way north to Alaska to see if Levi's grandmother might be willing to help them. It's the best case scenario, but getting there is still going to be a challenge. Especially since the rules have completely changed now for both Darius and Levi.

I loved this installment of the series. It had more action, more romance, more near-death experiences, and a lot of love between Ian, Darius, and Levi. The author left me teetering on a bit of an edge waiting to see what is going to happen next so I'm super excited about the next book in the series. Thank you, Ms. Witt, for entertaining me so very, very well!

More of the same: the boys run away from wolves, fuck, complain about the cold, run away again, complain about the cold, fuck some more, run again, complain some more (yes, it's cold in Northern Canada and Alaska in winter, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?). Rinse, repeat.

Run, feed, worry, fuck and then start again ... it's not that nothing happens but caught in that never-ending circle it feels that way and I even can't feel the I-love-you's anymore and nearly loosing the connection to the guys?

What happened with the threat of a turf war? The vampires in that world wouldn't dare to cross the path of a wolf. Can't see how that is going to have a happy ending. Nevertheless I'm still curious but suppose I need a break before starting the last part.

You do need to read book one before this, but I felt that sufficient reminders are given in this story that you don't have to read them back to back. I remembered enough about the first story, which I read months ago, to get the general idea.

As much as I like the general universe and the overall idea, this book was more of the same: run, be chased, small reprieve, sex, repeat two or three times. There was practically nothing new added to the story in this book. We barely learned anything more about the universe or about the characters themselves. The ONLY things of significance in this book are:

The whole "what do we do now" really doesn't change, just the method of travel varies occasionally, but otherwise the chases are rather pointless except to bring about the points listed above. The book had a difficult time holding my interest because of the redundant pattern and lack of moving toward resolution to the problem at hand. The angst at the beginning over whether or not to turn Levi into a vampire to help heal him more quickly was drawn out and over-done. I'm tired of them being chased, and they have no idea what to do or where to go anyway. The final sex scene felt so unnecessary that I would've preferred a fade to black instead.

I expect a LOT more visible growth toward resolution from the third book. If it's more of the same next time, not only will I be highly disappointed, but I'll likely not go any further in the series if it goes beyond three books.

2.5 stars.

I just love those guy/wolves/vampires/whatever. This is the second book in a series and you need to read the first one before you start with this.

This book has the unfortunate situation that the main problem is still not solved and nothing really has changed. Additionally even the issues between the three MCs aren't as huge as they had been. So - Darius, Levi and Ian are still on the run from the wolves, their situation gets more and more difficult and they are still together, with Levi seriously injured. I wondered how long it would take until either Ian or Darius caves in (I'm not telling with what) but it happened sooner and easier than I imagined.
Their love life is smoothly embedded into their run. Momentary lapses in confidence do add some tension.

All in all was I more than positive surprised that I was glued to the book despite I knew what had to happen or that some things won't happen and that they still were on the run. It should have gotten boring, I mean they are more or less on this trip now for two books but it just didn't. I loved reading it, enjoyed it very much.

Really, my only complaints are - the grandma ...I didn't get her but since she is helping now I won't complain....and that I have to wait for the next one.

I'm so glad L.A. mentioned she's about to start the third book, because holy damn, I want to read it right now. Not saying this book ends on a cliffhanger (more like a hilldangler), but the story still isn't over.

I liked the development of the triangle and how each character is tied to the others. They work so well together as a unit, and each one changed quite a bit as an individual. It was awesome to see the character growth.

My only minor quibble was the repetition of certain things. A few times it felt like past events were talked out, thought about, or discussed a bit excessively. Filling in backstory is a tricky thing in a series, especially one when so much happened in the first book, but this book seemed to err on the side of over-explaining. Which, for a reader who skipped book one (Don't do it!), can be useful.

Overall, though, a solid entry is a dramatic, angsty paranormal series.

This book brings up FoA...

Okay, it was all good and dandy. Weird, but manageable.

And then...

Excuse me?
"And you get one, and you get one, and you get one, too!"

And you know, after a while, the "sex solves everything" trope gets really, really annoying...

I dunno...this one just... didn't work for me.

This does not read like a book two.  It is a continuation from book one instead of being a book in its own rights. It is also short,  read: four hours.

I don't understand why nobody explained to Darius all the inconveniences and myths about vampirism earlier in the book.

Yay to fixing the terrible ducking without lube problem from book one, but they all like cocksucking then insist on ducking every single time on this book. I am so confused about that because all the gay men I have spoken with told me that they don't duck every time they have sex. Why do men who are rationing lube with to access to more bot do something different?  I admit I don't have a dick, but it seems weird that ducking seems to be a requirement for sez.

The chase continues. Ian, Darius, and Levi (especially) are reeling from the aftermath of events in book one. Book two is an adventurous race to try to find safety in a world determined to kill them. Everything they’ve ever known/believed is tested. The story is packed (no pun intended) with action. (At parts it even seems like a how to guide for stealing a car.) The relationship between the three MCs is also put to test as each is forced to choose how far he will go for either of the other two.

I guess you could read it on it’s own, but it is a middle book. While it does have its own story, it mostly serves to move events into place for the final book.

The chase continues.

First I would like to say that I am glad the book wasn't all just threesomes all over the place, it would have been to much.

The book continues with the chase and the vampire/werewolf drama. I like the direction this book went because now we have vampires werewolves and a hybrid. I wish there was a better explanation of all.this but maybe we are learing everything with the characters.

They still don't know what to do about the werewolves that want to trap them but now they have found some allies.

I really don't know how everything will be resolved so I am very interested in the third and final book.

4 stars! rare for sequels, this volume was much better than the first one. The trio run into problems at every turn and face a large amount of pain and injury and it ends rather abruptly but the third volume has already been released.

This was an earlier writing of the author. Not her best writing but I am so invested in the characters I have to keep going. Books are long and a little drug out but have kept me interested.

Ugh, this book was far too angsty for me.
I still feel like I'm trying to get my blood pressure down after reading this story.

See, this is why I can't watch The Fugitive or any of those on-the-run movies. Witt's characters are just trying to get someplace safe, and everyone and their mother is after them!

*sigh*

The story didn't really end with an HEA, but I'm so glad it's finally over and done with.

This sequel to the intriguing first book suffered a bit from a repetitive plot and excessive length. The boys are on the run, mourning a fallen friend and beset with survivors' guilt as they deal with the devastating aftermath of the climax of the last book. Levi is critically injured. They cannot risk a hospital, and with the wolves a half-step behind them the action consists of moving from motel to motel as they make their way to possible help and shelter.

Levi wants to be turned, both to heal his wounds and as a symbolic severance with the wolf heritage he now despises. The others are understandably hesitant. This is a source of genuine emotional conflict, up to a point. The boys meet up with the vampires, and also some wolves, and these encounters provide the few action scenes. Relationship-wise, there are struggles as three pairs become one menage, and each deals with some jealousy when separated from the other two. This is not as compelling as the Levi/Darius first-time scenario we got to experience in the first book.

Two major plot points happen in this one: huge spoilers , and two apparently important new characters are introduced. However, the ending leaves the trio almost exactly where they started in terms of survival and their unknown future. Nothing has been resolved, so the success of this installment will depend on whether or not there is a third.

The boys are on the run, but together this time. All they want is some peace and quiet, but it's not so easy. Levi is still hurting from the accident at the end of book 1 that killed his best friend - both physically and mentally. Eventually Ian agrees to turn him into a vampire to heal him and Levi is in for a whole new world of crazy. And then Darius gets bitten by a werewolf and suddenly things are not quite so simple.

I expected the series to be well written, after all this is an LA Witt book - but I did not expect the story to sweep me off my feet so much. The individual chapters with each protagonist's POV gives the story depth and keeps things interesting, and I really loved each character's inner monologue about their feelings for the others. As menages go, this had a good dynamic because each had a separate relationship with another outside the trio. Ian and Levi were together for a long time before their enforced separation but Ian and Darius' feelings were made no less valid for being around a shorter time. And Darius and Levi's was (for me) the most beautiful relationship of all, how they had to overcome a lifetime of conditioning and hatred.

So this is absolutely something you must read in order. Book one ends and book two essentially takes off from that exact point.

Our boys are still in trouble and still running and get separated again….

This book was a bit tedious for me and I found myself zoning out a lot.

In book one there was excitement in the boys finding one another and joining their ménage together. In book two it’s all about the chasing. (It reminded me of the SUPER LONG last book of Harry Potter where Hermione and Harry are out being teenagers and angsting all over the place for what felt like FOREVER while they look for/wait for Ron. A good editing is needed there and here to make this move along at a better pace.)

Jason Winters has a bit of a lisp sometimes that began to annoy me a bit – probably because the book wasn’t nearly as captivating as book one.

My hope is that book three will redeem itself to me and I can go back to enjoying this series.

You have to read this to continue, but it’s not my favorite by a long shot.

re-read 09/2022 - the geographical errors got to me more this time - You can not get to Sitka from Prince Rupert on one ferry in less than 12 hours - I looked it up, its a 36 hour trip not including the time it takes at each of the 6ish stops in between... That being said, I love Darius, Ian, and Levi!

Humans, wolves, vampires, oh my

What a ride. These poor three have been hounded. I really like the characters and their growth.

I really liked that both this book and the one before take place mostly in Canada, in the regions I’m familiar with. Though that enabled me to see the flaws of location - just little things that a resident would notice but someone doing research may not - that occasionally took me out of the story.

I couldn't wait to start this immediately upon finishing the first book, and I'm now equally eager to read the third. Each of the first two books has had a complete story arc, so the endings are satisfying and don't feel like cliff-hangers. It's just that there's so obviously more of the story to tell, and since they're so well written and I enjoy the characters and world so much, I'm eager to read that "more".

Having come to like both Levi and Ian by the end of the first book, I continued to enjoy them in this one. However, I still continued to mix up their names, and thus occasionally get confused as to who was who.

This is a continuation of book1. It is important to read book 1 first. I liked Ian more in this one. Darius remained the more sympathetic character but Levi's trials were more heart wrenching. Still a hot series.

Great second book. Even more action. I love the dynamics between the three mc's. There are times where individually they seem to doubt their places in the relationship. But eventually they seem to get their acts together and their relationship only gets hotter.
