Tooth & Claw #1-3

Tooth & Claw: The Complete Trilogy

Rate this book
When Levi finally persuades his wolf clan to allow him to bond to Ian—a human male—instead of his predestined female mate, he thinks his struggles are over.

Sorry, Levi—the bad stuff is just beginning.

The bonding ritual drives Ian to the edge of sanity, and he impulsively finds solace in the arms of another man. Specifically, the arms of Darius—a jaded vampire who’s understandably wary of vampire-hating wolves.

When Levi finds out about Ian’s lapse, not mention his conversion, all hell breaks loose. Now Ian’s on the run with a dead wolf’s blood on his hands, and the only way Levi or Darius are going to get near him is to work together. They need to get to him before the rest of the clan… assuming they don’t kill each other first.

And even if they do find Ian in time, that doesn’t mean their problems are anywhere near over…

L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.

Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.

The first book in this trilogy was really good - angst, romance, vampires, werewolves. Lots of action and hot sex. The next two installments, however, were repetitive, even boring. Just more of the same. It was like a plot in search of a conclusion, and I had to force myself to finish it. It wasn't that it was poorly written, it just didn't hold my attention.

I lasted up to 68% and just couldn't struggle anymore. This is the case of a book (trilogy of average-length novels) reading longer than they are...

Started off great but turned sloooowww as molasses. Like nothing ever happened. Like ever. SS(DD) on every single page. The story never progresses.

Levi was great. Darius was interesting. Ian was impossible to like. They would ask what to do next, never come up with a plan (A, B, C... P. They never made plans) then screw in a hotel room.

Wash. Repeat.

Great start, great idea, great MC (Levi) pacing destroyed the fun. A startled car, going nowhere... so slow, it feels like it's in reverse.

The Given & The Taken ~ If you've read my reviews before, then you know I adore the paranormal world. I'm also a huge fan of ménage. Now, you put paranormal together with three hot men in a ménage and I've pretty much hit the jackpot. Heck, I get so excited I start to squeal, at which point hubby closes the door so he doesn't have to listen. The description of this book interested me tremendously. A werewolf and his human lover suffer a year apart after being bonded per the elders' decree (pesky darn elders). The pain of the separation is too much for the human and he turns to a friend for sex and comfort. The friend happens to be a vampire and turns him, and so after the year is up, he's meeting his werewolf mate as a vampire, hated and destroyed enemy of the wolves. Seriously? How could I not read this?

Levi, the werewolf shifter, spent months pleading his case in front of the elders before they would allow him to bond with a human male. Rare enough that they allowed two men to bond, but a human to boot? They insisted on performing the bond and then the men had to stay apart for one year. At the end of that year, the human had to use the bond to find his way back to Levi and then their bonding would be recognized. Imagine Levi's shock when Ian has become a vampire in the last few months.

Ian knows it's going to be difficult to admit to Levi that he cheated on him. But it's not Ian's fault he was turned. That was all Darius's doing. Ian thinks it will take some time before Levi will forgive him, but it was so horrible being separated. The constant pull of the bond drove Ian practically crazy until drinking at a bar with loud music became the only thing that could drown the bond out. Ian is shocked when Levi turns from him stating he wants nothing to do with him anymore. He's also angry, as it was Levi who insisted on the bond, when Ian was happy with the way things were, but Levi is a firm follower of the pack's beliefs and laws.

Darius is shocked when he discovers that the human he turned is bonded to a wolf. It's only been a few decades that marginal peace has been in place between the two paranormal factions. Because the humans like the wolves better, vampires have been regulated almost to martial law, and Darius knows that when Levi's pack discovers Ian debased their honored bonding tradition, they'll be coming for Ian and his maker.

So, they've got a giant conundrum, huh? The funny thing is, and I'm fairly certain this is a first for me with characters, I understood each person's choices and felt equally horrible for each of them. There was no "set-in-stone" bad guy responsible for all of their pain. They each shared equal responsibility for the disastrous mess they found themselves in. And, of course, the mess gets worse!

Between Darius and Ian trying to flee from Levi, and the entire wolf clan out to hunt them down, Ian becomes separated and travels via tractor trailer heading continuously north trying to evade Levi and what he thinks is his own death at Levi's hands. This leaves Darius, Levi, and Levi's best friend, Selena, working together to find and protect Ian. Of course, it's at this time that Levi and Darius discover that sex might be better than trying to kill each other. And, lo and behold, the sex is hot and some feelings develop.

Now, the story reaches its crescendo when Levi and Darius finally track Ian down. Luckily, for my piece of mind, the guys lay it all out there and are honest with one another, meaning Ian admits to loving them both and Darius and Levi admit to a physical attraction. It doesn't take long for the ménage to occur and, yep, it was as hot as I thought it would be. Now, the only problem is rescuing Selena from the pack that is holding her hostage in exchange for Ian.

I really enjoyed this book. It is very long and there is a lot going on, at all times, but not once did I get bored or lose interest. The ending was sad but left the three main characters still together and still running for their lives. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Healing & The Dying ~ Considering the way book one ended, I was on pins and needles beginning this second book of the 'Tooth and Claw' series. So very much has happened already and I had a pretty good feeling that this story would be packed full of action, intrigue, mystery, and oh so hot sex. I was looking forward to Ian, Darius, and Levi getting their happy ever after, although I was pretty sure I might be loco for thinking that was going to happen. I really liked that this book picked up pretty much right where book one ended. Levi is suffering, in a huge way, both physically, from all the injuries he received in the motorcycle accident, and emotionally, from Selena dying. Ian is a mess because he killed three people in order to protect Levi and Selena. And Darius is trying to hold everything together and figure out where they need to go.

The decision made, they slowly begin their trek west and northwest, heading to Prince Rupert where another vampire commune exists. Traveling is difficult as they're limited to nighttime, the available money is dwindling quickly, and tension has been created by Levi insisting he wants to be turned and Darius refusing to do it. Darius has very valid reasons and he doesn't want to condemn Levi to life as a vampire just because he's in pain and feels like he's slowing them down. Of course, everything blows up when they reach their destination and are summarily denied help by the vampires and turned away with no idea of where to go.

Now, they're stuck, literally. Levi still has broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a messed up knee he can't put any weight on. In his pain he asks Ian to promise him that if they get in a situation where Levi can't move fast enough, Ian and Darius need to leave him to save themselves. He doesn't get his promise, but he gets something I wasn't expecting. And, no, I'm not saying what. That would be spoiling it for everyone. They come up with a new plan to head way north to Alaska to see if Levi's grandmother might be willing to help them. It's the best case scenario, but getting there is still going to be a challenge. Especially since the rules have completely changed now for both Darius and Levi.

I loved this installment of the series. It had more action, more romance, more near-death experiences, and a lot of love between Ian, Darius, and Levi. The author left me teetering on a bit of an edge waiting to see what is going to happen next so I'm super excited about the next book in the series. Thank you, Ms. Witt, for entertaining me so very, very well!

The United & The Divided ~ It felt like I waited forever for this final story of Levi, Darius and Ian. 'The United & The Divided' is book three in L.A. Witt's series 'Tooth & Claw' and it stands to be the most exciting as the finale. When I left the guys at the end of the previous book, they had just escaped the pack at Levi's grandmother's home in Sitka, Alaska, and with grandma and Levi's cousin in tow, were heading to a remote island where a pack of wolves lived that might, or might not, accept them into the fold. Starting off with a bang, huh?

I couldn't begin to comprehend how absolutely terrifying it must have been for Levi, Darius, and Ian to step onto that island with the wolves. Not knowing whether they had been tricked and were going to be killed at any second. Especially when they had to stand up in front of the whole pack to discuss the pros and cons. In fact, I'm not sure how the guys have managed as long as they have these weeks of running, hiding, and fighting to stay alive. The pack Elders agree to allowing them to stay, and once a few of the pack experience being fed from and can banish their fears, it looks like the guys might be able to relax.

Until the Molotov cocktails come exploding into their bedroom forcing them to deal with the sunlight outside. Luckily, Levi's cousin and one of the female pack members save them and takes them to the temple to heal in total darkness. The six wolves responsible are found and brought before the Elders and the pack. When the Elders decide to punish them by banishment, Ian steps forward to state that there's been enough anger, hatred, revenge, and banishing them isn't going to do anything but cause more problems. Ian, Darius, and Levi are tired of all the fighting. They just want to be safe and be allowed to live.

The clan Elders aren't going to allow that, though, and when one of them discovers where Levi, Darius, and Ian are hiding out, the hunt is back on. This time though, they've got a couple of wolf friends who try to help. Unfortunately, outnumbered and not wanting to get their friends killed, Levi, Darius, and Ian surrender. The clan Elder sentences them to death at sunrise. And, I'm not spoiling the surprise. So there.

Unbelievable finale to this incredible series. At least, I'm assuming this is the finale, but I suppose you never know. The love that Levi, Darius, and Ian showed to each other, and then as a trio once that began, was steady and true, all of them risking their lives over and over again for one another. Even though so much of these books involved serious action adventure, the love and desire showed through, constantly, and when they had a moment to show that love, sexually, they grasped it and held on with everything they had. Amazing. I loved it. I can't recommend it enough!

Oh my god, that was a wild fucking ride. I don’t think I breathed normally the entire freaking 15000 loc of this trilogy. And I loved it, and loved Levi, Darius, and Ian, too. And Levi’s bestie Selena too. Oh Selena...

This trilogy is full of wolves, vampires, heart-pounding action, hot as hell sex, intense emotions ranging from ohmygodicantstopcryingithurts to holyshitdidthatjusthappen to RUNRUNRUN to fuckthatwashotashell to omgsomuchlovemyheartjustgrewasize, and above all else, true and deep love found in the most unlikely of places and people - the kind of love a person would die for and kill for. I admit, I was in doubt before starting as something that happens before the trilogy even starts is one thing I normally stay away from in my books, but I am SO GLAD I forged ahead anyway. I’d love a novella or short or something to see where these guys are now. A girl can dream, can’t she?

And now maybe my heart will finally go back to beating normally...

Long and with an actual plot, this work stands out among many of its peers.
It could have born some cuts, especially in the second (and third, it is a trilogy, nominally) part and especially in the sex scenes. There are many of them and some are good and compelling while others feel more repetitive and just there as a page filler when actual plot twists were expected.

One of the main points of interest lies in the setting, a sort of dystopian very near future in which both vampires and werewolves have come out, but werewolves have managed to gain the upper hand on vampires by convincing humans to legally discriminate them. A situation which is not changed at the end of the novel, despite the HEA.

That said, a true plot and a consistent characterization make the pages flow unhindered resulting in an enjoyable read. Not suited for those disliking throuples, of course. Or moderate violence.

When you tear through these back to back, what really stands out is the repetitive dialogue and situations, though the characters are at least aware of the latter. A lot of the boys' discussions are "What are we going to do? We need a Plan B. I'm not sure that will work. Do we really have any other options? Good point." The situations they find themselves in also cycle through in a similar fashion: finding a place to lay low, getting found, running, getting shot, finding a place to lay low, etc.

Overall, this was a slightly different take on vampires and werewolves with a threesome relationship that I found generally enjoyable. The connection between Levi and Darius seemed a bit quick and not as nicely developed as the other legs of the romance triangle, but it was serviceable. I don't think this trilogy has quite the oomph of some of LA Witt's other works, but I don't regret spending my time on it.

Honestly I thought it was never going to end. It's really not a trilogy, it's one long book that has been arbitrarily cut into sections. There's really no difference between a chapter break and the end of a book.

And it's really, really annoying because a bit of a harder edit could have made it so much better. The main characters are really good, the development of their relationship is well handled, the take on the werewolf/vampire trope is interesting and the plot is good. It just totally loses its way in the pacing. Flabby and repetitive.

Three amazing books!

I absolutely loved these three men. They each brought out the best, and complimented each other when things turned to hell.
This is a story of love, devotion, heartbreak, and self awareness. Levi, Daruis, and Ian forge an unbreakable bond that, no matter how many times it gets tested, and threatens to break, they hold fast to each other. The story is action packed, with strong side characters. I always enjoy reading paranormal romance, and am happy with the vampire/wold shifter combination.

Vampires and Wolves in Love, Oh My!

Levi and Ian and Darius face an increasingly difficult laundry list of challenges, not just to their polyamorous relationship, but most strikingly to their health& welfare. The three find themselves facing enemies at every turn. And yet, not to divulge any spoilers, the ending does a nice job of thing every loose end up .. And you won't throw your reader across the room in irritation at how the story closes.

So, if you enjoy gay romance fiction that has a nice ending, this is a trilogy for you!

A good trilogy

I enjoyed this trilogy, but make no mistake it is a 3 part story. Although parts are answered and they’re not exactly cliffhangers, nothing is truly resolved till then end.
I think they need some editing, gramma, one particular plot hole still bugs me and sometimes (rarely) it waffled on.
Over though I loved the story and plot. Would recommend. I do wish there was an in the future epilogue.

overall enjoyable!

I really liked this journey, although book three felt like a rehash of the previous books with betrayal by someone who they trusted, but then being rescued by a female wolf. The Elders were a piece of work, and the conclusion was a little convenient but happy. I did like these three men and the books were full of action and suspense.

An acquired taste for sure!

This series started out a bit slow and choppy, but once it took off it was so totally interesting I couldn’t put it down. I found it sexy, hot, romantic and so tense at times it had my toes curly.

A strong series that reads even better as if it were one very long book. It is very dark and angsty similar to the way the fourth twilight book was. But, I’d pick this series over twilight easily.

It pains me to leave a two-star review for an L.A. Witt book. I've always enjoyed her writing, but this just did not work.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Writing about a triad relationship can be tricky, and for me this book started off setting itself up to fail. Finding out at the very beginning that Ian cheated on Levi did nothing to endear me to Ian. The way Levi reacted was supposed to come across as harsh, but to me was perfectly understandable. At this point I'm firmly on Levi's side. Then here comes Darius, and the first thing that happens is he and Ian fall into bed again? I'm still on Levi's side.

As the story unfolds and we learn what is driving all three men, and the role each has played in what happened ... you know, I'm not sure what we're meant to think. I understand logically that each man has hurt the other and that they forgive each other. But nowhere in all of that do I understand how Levi and Ian were together for five years and in love, and in a month(?) Ian and Darius fall in a love as deep as Levi's and Ian's? And THEN I'm meant to believe Levi and Darius fall in love in a matter of what, a week?? I just never once *felt* anyone falling in love. And yeah, maybe their willingness to die for each other shows their love, but it still all felt lacking to me. Not helping things was the ongoing jealousy and insecurity, or the uneven pairings in who was having the sex without other. This was a menage I really didn't care about, ultimately, and that's a shame. As much as I was on Levi's side, in the end I had a hard time caring about any of them.

On to the more technical stuff:
1. Way too much chewing and gnawing on lips, thumbs, and insides of cheeks. All three MCs just happen to have this same trait? No.
2. WE GET IT. THE COLD SUCKS. My reading comprehension skills might not be flawless but I did not need to be told 826 times how much the cold sucks and how vampires can't get frostbite or hypothermia.
3. All attempts at levity and humor just did not lighten the mood, and made things awkward to read.
4. The repetition was really tiresome, plot-wise. Yes, they are on the run. But my god couldn't they have had like a two-week break holed up somewhere in the middle of all this? Instead it was constant run then be found, run then be found.
5. Thank god for the women in this book, who saved them every time. And I'm all for strong women! But even that got repetitious. (Also, RIP Selena, your death took care of a big problem and was unwarranted.)
6. A big deal is made about how Levi and Darius can't feed from humans because their bite will turn the humans to wolves. Yet toward the end of book three, Darius bites Ian and breaks skin and Ian is fine? How does that work?

This book really frustrated me. I came very close to DNFing a couple times but continued at others' urgings and my own dislike of not finishing books. If it weren't for that, I probably would have stopped reading once I found out about Ian cheating. Which was 3 or 4 percent into this trilogy.
