West End #2

La Maschera

Rate this book

This sexy story was perfection until the angst hit hard and heavy at 80 percent. The relationship between the MCs deteriorated, and the drama continued until the last page. Thank ye gods for the epilogue.

I loved Penn. He was all man, even when wearing a dress and silk thong.

Adam had his demons and seriously needed to see a therapist.

I didn't like the way depression was handled here. Not all anti-depressants make you impotent, and you can't think yourself out of a funk.

Recommended if you like steamy, relationship-focused stories with a comfort theme and don't mind slogging through some angsty times.

What can I say other than... WOW... WOW... WOW...
I have to say that although after having read "Ten Mile Bottom" and "Dance" I was absolutely confident in the quality of writing the author would bring to this book, however I did somewhat question if she would be able to get me over the fact that by the end of Dance I did not like Adam much at all. I am happy to say that once she allowed me to get to know Adam a lot better I have come to love he and Penn just as much as I will always love Jared and Fenix. Having the chance to get inside of Adam's head and find out the reasons behind some of the stupid and hurtful things he did and the struggle he was going through was enlightening as well as amazing. Watching him struggle and fail to drop his mask with Penn time and time again out of fear of getting hurt was painful for Penn and for me reading about it. The reason it works in this book is simple. The author wrote it in such a way that it was REAL... I loved the fact that there was no instant fix of Adam's issues and that his growth and healing progressed at what felt like a totally real and natural pace. I hurt and cried with Penn each time Adam failed which made the ending so immensely joyful and affirming. The author is truly talented and I can't wait to read everything I can of her published works and every new book she writes!

Although part of a series, this book could be read as a stand-alone. Penn is a young clothing designer who gets a first job out of uni in theater costume production. He's young, talented, eager and optimistic.

There Penn catches the eye of Adam, an actor and sometimes playwright. Adam is stunned by Penn's appearance, not just out of attraction, but because Penn turns out to be the twin brother of Charlie, the guy whom Adam was dating and who just dumped him to leave without warning. Adam's not always sure whether his immediate responses to Penn are just an echo of his feelings for Charlie. But the longer he's around Penn, the more he sees that this twin has the sweetness and empathy that the other didn't. Penn is a far better fit for Adam than Charlie ever was, if Adam can just figure out where to go from there.

Adam also battles some degree of depression, or anxiety tied to worries about a family history of depression, that ties him up in knots. As he becomes closer to Penn, he values their relationship more and more. But after being the one pushing for more with Charlie, he now is the one holding back, not sure he can be what Penn needs. It only adds to his anxiety to be certain that Penn won't wait forever for him to figure it out.

On the whole, this was a smooth, easy read with two likable guys. I had a few quibbles. For instance, Penn is a bit too perfect. And the speed with which Adam moved from mourning his relationship with Charlie to pursuing Penn felt much too fast, making him seem shallow. But once the story settled into the ups and downs of their relationship it became more natural and less forced. I was interested to see where the story went. The main characters have good chemistry, and Adam's reactions to the paralyzing effect of anxiety and depression were plausibly portrayed.

***** Penn and Adam. So much passion and drama ! We have big man, Adam who is a writer/actor at the Queen Victoria Theatre in London. Adam is a graduate of LAMDA, a successful writer, but also has a family history that's sad, and contains depression, and mental illness. Adam,

had a relationship with Charlie for a year. Now,
Penn shows up for his first day of working costume design at the theatre, and he looks like Charlie!
Penn, 22, is gifted in design

and will be the wardrobe assistant. We are brought up to date, with Jared and Fenix's breakup, and Adam's concern for his friend Jared.
Penn turns out to be Charlie's twin, which Adam had never been told by Charlie. Penn lives in Camden near his friend with a vintage dress shop, Riley. Adam is shaken by Charlie's deceit and avoids Penn, but not for long.
Eventually they have an enjoyable chore, and begin their attraction.
Their sexiness level is super hot.

Both like what the other one likes as a gorgeous kink. It was Penn's first time, but didn't let Adam know til later.
Penn is nothing like Charlie. There are some issues with Jared, and then with Adam's fears. It's an interesting story that is different and absorbing. Changes are taking place slowly, and how will they guys manage those changes worries us, just for a bit.

This lovely British setting romance is well written by Teodora Kostova.
ENJOY !

I loved book one, Dance, and I loved this just as much. Although this can be read as a standalone I recommend you read book one to get a better understanding of the background.

We met Adam in book one. I wasn't too keen on him then but he's certainly redeemed himself in this book. Told in two points of view this is Adam and Penns story. I loved the hot sexy scenes and also loved that we got to read more about Fenix and Jared.

Great storyline with enough angst to keep my attention from start to finish. Loved it.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and LOVED it. I was really curious if I would like Adam as main character. I had mixed feelings about him in book 1. He acted like a jerk a few times - and even though he still did what he did, I think seeing his side of things, his thoughts and fears, made me understand the way he acted.

Adam is a very different character on the inside than what he lets others see. He wears a mask to protect himself and others. His life is complicated and while he sometimes acts stupidly, it makes him more human in my eyes - especially given that readers know what he is thinking.

His romance with Penn was incredibly sweet. I loved how they fit together and brought out the best in each other. It is so much more than being attracted by the twin brother of his ex lover. Penn is a very different person and Adam seems different with him. There is a real trust and love between them and they even play out fantasies like cross-dressing together.

There is not a lot of angst between the MCs, though there are external challenges they have to overcome, some of which bring them closer together and some test their relationship.

Like with the first audiobook, I think the sexy British accent added a lot to the book. It's like the narrtor sings some of the line in a very seductive way. His voice is melodic, his accent sexy and it is a pleasure to listen to the book.

I received a free audio code for an honest review just before I left on a mini vacation and it was the perfect way to spend my travel time. It made me smile, swoon and just left me really happy.

I didn't care for this book that much. I loved one of the heroes, Penn and kinda liked Adam. Adam is obviously depressed and is afraid he has inherited a mental illness from a family member, but he refuses to do much about it. I also thought his relationship with is best friend was toxic and I thought Adam was way too much of a pushover for Jared's needs. This includes the outrageous suggestion of having the man who broke Adam's heart and who is Penn's estranged brother, Charlie, to sing at their wedding...I mean, really?! What kind of friend does that and what kind of person would ask that of his boyfriend. I'm glad the book ended on a happy note, but to me, was a struggle to finish it.

"I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads."

I loved Dance, the first book in the series, so it was no surprise that I loved this one too - but I think I may have enjoyed it even more!

The workplace of these characters - both theatre and back stage - is so wonderfully evoked that it is easy to imagine the fun and the chaos that happens behind the scenes. Penn is such a sweet caring soul, that matching him with Adam is brave. To create the chemistry that lives between them is magical - Ms Kostova is a mistress of her art. Many tough issues are raised and addressed, in a way that is both thoughtful and supportive. A beautiful story, which was over all too soon. Definitely joining Dance as a go to feel good story, with plenty of drama and passion.

Reading the author's words it is clear that she wrote this more quickly due to readers wanting to know what happened next ... well it may just be time to start applying the pressure for some more characters to get their HEAs Sonnie and Riley? Connor deserves his chance ... I could go on !

Love these two so hard.  Still my favorite Teo couple!! <3

***

First off...Momo submitted her list of "sexy must haves in a book" to Teo and didn't even know it!!!  Oh we were checking off her wish list right and left!! <3

Really enjoyed these two...and honestly it's hard to decide which one I like better, so...

...applies to both Adam and Penn. <3<3<3

Overall, the level of angst was much better than in Dance and I didn't feel as stressed about the relationship as much as I did with Jared and Fenix.

Loved the continued theater aspects, the costuming...eeehhhmmm the nighties, Riley, the wedding, etc.  All of it was beautifully developed.  Charlie can go choke on a bone...the asshat.

While I am very excited for Sonnie and Riley's story...I need some sweet loving first as Teo says that one is terribly angsty...and that coming from her...lord I might need to be medicated.

~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads Review Team~

I highly recommend reading Dance before this book, it will give you some back story on several of the characters. I loved Dance but this book was even better in my opinion! Adam is heartbroken after his long term boyfriend Charlie up and leaves him for his music career and decides one night stands are going to be the norm for him now. Walking into work one day Adam bumps into a new designer for the theatre, Penn. Penn has Adams attention from the very first moment. As Penn and Adam get to know each other their relationship blooms and is so beautiful. They both try not to give too much even though they both want everything. Adam has demons he is dealing with and Penn tries with all his might to be there for him. This book was amazing, I loved the epilogue but I really hope there is another book, maybe with Riley and Penn’s boss. I hope we hear more about Adam and Penn and Jared and Fenix. I love them all so much and hated when each book was over.

Characters: The characters were well written and believable.

Religious: no

If you love a MM romance you can't go wrong with a Teodora book.

If you haven't read Dance yet where we meet Adam, I'd say make sure you add that to your tbr as well!

Adam meets Penn at work, but it's not as easy as that, his highly attracted to this gorgeous man but should he take it further.... Trust me there are issues to be dealt with!

Penn is a designer and is a wonderful character, so warm and sexy too.

The journey they embark on makes an enticing read and will keep you turning pages. The bedroom scenes are smoking .

Their story is intermingled with Fenix and Jared's story and as I adore them two, it made this an even better read.

Blah.

After reading the epic love story of Fenix and Jared, I was looking forward to this book...even though I didn't like Adam in dance. Well...I still don't like him. The whole plot seemed unlikely and forced. I should have stopped reading this series after Dance, but at least I got to see more of the passionate love between Fenix and Jared.

Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ e💋

Adam and Penn were a good interesting couple. Penn happens to be the twin brother of Adam’s ex boyfriend Charlie who could never really commit to Adam and broke his heart when he left. Penn is the exact opposite and is a sweet and wonderfully thoughtful character who gives Adam more chances than he probably deserves until he can’t take it anymore and leaves Adam to figure out what he wants. There is some drama and a lot of heartache but there’s also a lot of sweet and sexy times between these two. I definitely like their chemistry better and am interested in the connection between the MC’s in the next book!!

Loved Dance but Mask is even better

I stayed up all night reading and listening to Dance and then continued reading Mask. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed Mask better than Dance, and I loved Dance. In Dance Adam was protective of Jared but he was also a jackass. In Mask you're able to see him and what he's been through. I so loved Penn and how loving he is. If you've read Dance and loved it, believe me you'll think Mask is even better❣❣❣

This is book 2 to Dance (West End Book 1) where Adam is best friend to the main character Jared.
Book 1 really paints Adam as kind of a hot headed slut, but also as a loyal friend...perhaps too loyal. His problem is he seems to think he's the one in the right, regardless of the other persons feelings.
That right there is a lesson everyone should learn.

Anyways, book 2 is about Adam. In book 1 he was in a "relationship" with a rockstar named Charlie.
It was such an odd relationship. Charlie was there, but just out of reach. It was the first time in YEARS that Adam felt anything. Charlie leaves for America due to his band signing on to a new label and they're recording an album and going on tour. Adam is left behind, trying to get over Charlie.

While Jared and Adam are going in to the theater where they work, they are approached by a newbie who is lost. Adam is stunned silent and it leaves Jared to do all the niceties... Only because the newb looks VERY much like Charlie, but with a few differences. Turns out Charlie had a twin brother and he never bothered to share that information with Adam.

Of course the twin, Penn, is just Adam's type, but now he's too upset about this new information and of course, he doesn't want to make Penn feel like he is some replacement for Charlie.

Penn is the new Costume Designer assistant for the theater and it is his dream job. He loves designing and sketching and making clothing, only not a lot of people know that. He also has the hots for Adam, even after finding out Adam had dated Charlie.

After taking Jared's advice on going slow and dating to get to know Penn as Penn and not Charlies brother, which is way out of character for Adam, he finds that the 2 are NOTHING alike and is falling hard for Penn. Penn has a little fetish, something Charlie would NEVER have done. He likes to wear "girly" clothing, such as nighties and underwear, and sometimes dresses, especially when he's designing them. This is a huge plus in Adam's book.

Adam's life goes into a different direction and he is found he is a bit lost. His best friend is getting married and moving from the country, he decides not to act in his play anymore. He misses directing and producing, so he is sort of at a crossroads in his life as to what his new passion will be.

When he can't commit to Penn and closes himself off, he almost loses Penn. Penn just wants a quiet life full of love and family and to be settled down. Adam thinks Penn is too young and doesn't know what he wants and it pushed Penn to make the decision to back away until dam can realize what he wants in the future and what he's missing without Penn. ((remember what i said in the beginning about Adam knowing better for everyone? yeah, lesson learned))

I am so glad Adam figured his shit out. I adored these 2 together. Penn was so sweet and basically the opposite of Adam. They make an awesome couple. The author did a fantastic job with these 2, i think this one is my favorite in the series so far. I am hoping there is a book 3 and that it's about Charlie. I think even though he's kind of a douche, there is a reason for it, and that he too can have a happy ending.
