On May 13, 1917, the Virgin Mary first revealed herself to a trio of shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. She would appear to them five more times over the course of the year until the great miracle of the sun on October 13, 1917. She brought a message of love and peace that was heard around the world--a sorely-needed antidote to the ravages of World War I. To mark the 100th anniversary of the apparitions, Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle provides a one-stop guide to the tradition, history and spirituality of Our Lady of Fatima, including the testimonies of those who have made the pilgrimage and prayers for those who share this devotion.
I'm a fan of Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle's writing and I really enjoyed Our Lady of Fatima: 100 Years of Stories, Prayers, and Devotions. Like most people, I've heard about Our Lady's appearances in Fatima but hadn't gone into the topic in depth. This book was the ideal way to do that. Very easy to read, with interesting stories, especially from the eye witness accounts. I'm inspired to participate in the Five First Saturdays and consecrate myself to the Immaculate Heart of Mary!
To mark the 100th anniversary of the apparitions, Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle provides a one-stop guide to the tradition, history and spirituality of Our Lady of Fatima, including the testimonies of those who have made the pilgrimage and prayers for those who share this devotion. The author doesn’t stop there, but makes it an armchair pilgrimage by offering reflection points, questions, and prayers after each chapter, encouraging the reader to apply the Blessed Mother’s messages to their own life. I thought this book was fantastic. Though this book offered a lot of facts, they were presented in an engaging way. Rather than it being a dry record of events, it was an exciting look into the emotions, significance, and impacts. The stories recounted in this book were powerful and rich with information about our faith. I loved the connections made between the events at their time of occurrence and why they still matter 100 years later. I also appreciated that though the focus of the book was on Fatima, there was excellent information on other Marian topics. Another great aspect of this book is there were practical ways to apply these miracles and experiences of holy people to our own lives both at the end of every chapter and in the appendices. This made the book a good balance of learning and living as well as making it a helpful resource for anyone regardless of their level of knowledge of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. The only problem I had with the book was the way topics were organized. Though it was presented chronologically overall, there were a few points where a new chapter would jump backward or forward. Though I can see why it was done this way, it got a little confusing to keep track of the timeline. That point aside, I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to finding ways I can integrate some of the prayers and devotions into my spiritual life. Though I think Catholics would get the most out of this book, I also believe it could be really fruitful for Protestants who want to better understand the proper Christian relationship with Mary. I definitely would recommend this book.
Note: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle has written a beautiful and deeply devotional book in 'Our Lady of Fatima: 100 Years of Stories, Prayers and Devotions'. A must read book, especially in 2017 to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the start of the apparitions in Fatima, Portugal.
The author tells the story of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco in parts which are very easy to read and each part includes prayers and devotions that help the reader grow spiritually and to internalize the messages of Our Lady of Fatima.
Of particular interest are the included quotes and writings from church leaders such as St. Pope John Paul II and of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. It helps the reader to further see the importance of these events that occurred one hundred years ago, on a larger scale, particularly how the messages and petitions of Our Lady of Fatima affect numerous nations.
A significant part of the book is also about Mother Theresa, and her efforts to have a Miraculous Medal present in the Kremlin at the time of the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart. Of further interest, are the devotions that Our Lady calls all people to, such as the 'Five First Saturdays' devotion. A devotion that has been largely placed aside and forgotten, as many people simply concentrate on the prophesies of Fatima.
This book is a gem that will help anyone to live out the messages of the Blessed Mother of Fatima. It is a book very much directed at a Catholic audience already familiar with either the Catholic Church or some of its doctrines. It is also a very prayerful and devotional book that helps the reader integrate the extremely important messages of Our Lady of Fatima into their daily lives.
I recommend this book for readers who are curious about the apparitions of Fatima, and I extremely recommend this book for those who already know about Fatima. This book will help the reader deepen their faith and help them to integrate their efforts and actions with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
In this book (Servant, 2017), Cooper O’Boyle highlights what must have been a towering stack of source material.
The book’s arranged so that there’s an overview then a closer look at each section of the apparitions. It ends with a discussion of why Our Lady of Fatima is important to us today.
As you dive into each chapter, you don’t just find the facts (though they are there), but you also get the results of interviews and conversations Cooper O’Boyle had with a number of people, sprinkled with the writings of popes and other influential Church leaders, such as Fr. John Hardon and St. Teresa of Calcutta, both of whom Cooper O’Boyle knew personally.
In addition, there is “A Time to Reflect” and “In My Own Life” section at the end of every chapter. These make the material more personal: it’s about more than just reading the history (captivating though that is). It’s just as much about applying the lessons and letting the messages of Fatima make a difference in your life in the here-and-now.
There is also a prayer at the end of every chapter, one which makes the book such a different experience than just reading for information.
There’s as much research as there is reflection in this book, which makes it quite an addition to any Catholic bookshelf. This book marries the facts with the devotion and gives those of us in the trenches great ways to apply it to our everyday lives.
I and my family are members of Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Duncansville, PA. Behind the church is an open grassy area with a Rosary walk. Located near the center is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. Because of this, I was aware of the story of Fatima, but after reading Our Lady of Fatima, 100 years of stories, prayers, and devotions by Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle, I have a much fuller understanding of this important event in world history. The author succinctly narrates the events and more importantly highlights the consequences for all humanity depending on our response to Our Lady’s message. Each chapter ends with a reflection, a challenge for the reader to live out the message, and an appropriate prayer. As we quickly approach the one-hundredth year anniversary of Fatima, the importance of the Fatima message is amplified, especially in light of the world’s current events. Wars, attacks on the Church, the Family, and the most vulnerable are seen daily in the media. The antidote to this global sickness is detailed in Mary’s plea to the world. Read this book, BUT MORE VITAL is to then respond in our own lives with the actions requested by Our Blessed Mother.
From the first pages, I felt as if I was sitting in an overstuffed chair in front of the fireplace listening to Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle tell the story of an incredible Lady and three shepherd children who have captured our hearts in a very special way over the past 100 years.
This book is not simply a reporting of the history of the story and message of Fatima, but it is presented as a personal mini-retreat. I found myself challenged on many levels to increase my own faithfulness to daily prayer, Morning Offering, sacrifices to save souls, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the First Saturdays.
It is incredible how a message from 100 years ago is so relevant to our lives today!
Especially if you are Catholic, this is your next read. It has to be!! It will ignite your faith and devotion. It is a thorough retelling of the story of Fatima, but with an interactive and reflective component to each chapter, and with the benefit of looking back on the past 100 years since Fatima. My faith is renewed and I'm anxious to take up the five Saturdays immediately. Ultimately the message of Fatima is a call to prayer & supplication. This book is so masterfully written. Cannot recommend it enough.
Loved it! I visited Fatima this year July 4 2017. Truly felt a holy presence and I'm not very religious and barely go to church. Something moved me and I decided to read up on Fatima . This book was just what I needed.
This is probably the author's best writing. I think her talent is truly to aggregate information into a relatable book. I am a Fatima fan and have read a few books on the subject. I learned new information and gained a few more sources to check out.
A book that will encourage you to reflect on an incredible experience that took place in Portugal. It will bring you closer to Our Lady, especially at a time when Russia is penetrating the Ukraine. I’m inspired to pray the Rosary.
