Miller Bay Indian Hospital: Life and Work in a TB Sanatorium
Miller Bay was one of a network of "Indian" hospitals across Canada, under the management of Indian Health Services. This book examines the history of this particular hospital, which opened in 1946 and finally closed in 1971. First Nations patients came from across northern BC and typically stayed for months or years. The treatment and outcomes for tuberculosis changed dramatically with the times; more slowly the approaches to health care for aboriginal people also evolved. This book attempts to describe some of the experiences of patients, workers, administrators, and families, throughout the twenty-five years of the hospital's existence. Miller Bay has been largely forgotten today but its history is part of Canada's history and should not be lost.
