The third part of the laugh-out-loud sci-fi adventure series from the author critics are calling 'the new Douglas Adams.'
Cal Carver, petty-criminal turned space adventurer, is on a suicide mission - and he really hates suicide missions. But this time its to save his best buddy, Splurt, who has been taken prisoner by the evil Zertex corporation.
When they discover that the ship carrying Splurt never made it to Zertex, their search leads them through a wormhole to a mysterious planet unlike any they have seen before. Will they survive this strange new world and finally find their friend? And, more importantly, does he even want to be found?
Packed with gladiator battles, angry bees, a big thing blowing up, and the return of the galaxy's oldest assassin, Space Team: The Search for Splurt is the rip-roaring conclusion to the first Space Team trilogy.
Barry J. Hutchison is an award-winning author, screenwriter and writer of comics. Having written over 70 books for children and teenagers, Barry is now writing books for adults. Space Team is his first grown-up novel.
Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and irritatingly upbeat dog.
A perfect light read to cleanse the palate! I am really enjoying the series, but just as most of its kind, you can't really binge read them, or you will suffer an overload... My poor little adorable Splurt! What has that evil Vajazzle done to you?!?!?
With the ending of the previous book I just knew I'd be listening to The Search for Splurt fairly quickly. I just had to know what happened to my favorite ball of green goo after he saved Cal.
This is my favorite Space Team entry so far. Poor Splurt! That evil Vajazzle will never hurt you again!!! A darker story line over all, things get pretty grim for Cal and Splurt, yet still retains the humor. The story also ends on a minor cliff hanger as the daring rescue of Splurt leads them into yet another tricky situation. I'm going to have to rotate book 4 in soon.
I am continuing to listen to the series on audio narrated by Phil Tron. Tron delivers an amazing performance yet again.
Phil Thron is awesome! I think I appreciated #2 more than this one on the re-read but I still love the gang and crazy crap happens all over the place. I don't want to hug Splurt when he's green goo but I'm cool with hugging that gooball when he turns into something else. lol
04/17/2018 Mini-Review:
Great narration by Phil Thron. He really does a great job with the story.
Thus far, this is the best book in the series. I really enjoyed the odd twists and turns that came up in the story. Yes, the gang of space misfits are quite predictable but the rest is up for grabs. I like the bad jokes, grandstanding, moments of real feels and hilarious action. I'm glad Kev recommended the series to me.
This book had a more complete story from start to finish. It doesn't feel like just a piece in a larger part. I'm not sure how I feel about green goo besties but I can go with it for this gang.
World: The world building is okay, it’s full of cliches and a parody of the SF genre as a whole so a lot of it is there for humour. The world is somewhat put together with the evil corporations and the mundane people who are a part of it and the ragtag group of heroes, it’s all there it’s all cliched and it’s all fun.
Story: This is a continuation of the story from the last book and with the name of course it hints at a parody for the “Search for Spock” and it’s fun. It’s the same stuff from the other books, there are some character moments and a lot of humour found throughout and it’s just fun junk food enjoyable reading. The emotions are hilarious, the character development is hilarious, it’s just a fun book. The core of the story is well paced and done and really is an end to the story that began with book two and it’s a satisfying and quirky ending.
Characters: The team is fun, they are walking cliches but that’s what makes it fun, they are what they are. The banter is great, Cal is annoying and fun at the same time, Miz reminds me of Lump Space Princess, it’s just fun.
Fun is a word I used a lot and that was the case here.
I think what I like best about this series is that it's a parody, intended to be funny, yet the stories are immersive and the stakes quite real. You can't help but root for this dysfunctional team, and the character development is strikingly poignant in places. Cal is not just a dope that talks too much, there is a lot of fiber behind it. Does the same hold true for the others? Well, we've gotten to see some of what makes Mizette the way she is, and here we get to see a bit more of Cal and Splurt's character. Does the future hold Loren and Mech's deeper mysteries in store? I'm certain they do, and we'll all wait with great anticipation.
While not an enjoyable exercise, these revisions are a sop to commenters who demanded more depth in my judgement than that of the childish drivel which they seem to enjoy.

An Idiot who whilst insulting an interesting essayist, complained to her that I list other trans creators. There seems a continued surplus still of untreated Snowflakes (nasty self-important US baby-men). Trigger warning then.
The channels which I list include archaeologist, Indian, cis, socialist, primatologist, bi, military historian, older, musician, intersex, WOC, blond, book reviewer, military historian. asexual, tall, sewist, Kenyan, marine biologist, het, astrophysicist, literary critic, communist, queer, Australian, architect, trans, RPG player, married, military boardgamer, fashion historian, engineer, redhaired, model painter and other creators known as Women.
Almost as threatening to the limited reference group are the boater, mathematician, Polish, science educator, ethnocynologist, board gamer, other LGBTQI+, model builder, other fashion historian, linguist, Canadian, anarchist, anthropologist, short, ginger, political commentator, zoologist, neurodivergent, boat builder, New Zealander, miniatures player, train modeller, farmer, chemist and others labelled (outside of the US) Human Beings.
Should the voices still insist, consider embracing Shinto, developing a hobby (reading, perhaps) or emergency therapy.
When exposure to these dullards threatens to overwhelm, I remember the early days interview with the middle age Ukrainian teacher. She organised and led her civilian anti-tank team in hunting Russian armour North of Kyiv. With that example in mind, to not continue is not an option. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the Heroes. Long may the Trident on Blue and Yellow field fly.
Onto the book. The series is at this time not memorable. I had thought the series goofy and entertaining as slapstick adventure. Humour is pleasant but again I can only say that there were no remembered instances of ableism, anti-working class or other problematic elements.
I worry that the prevalence of problematic themes, characterisation, etc may have dulled my recognition of same. Those negative elements are standard to almost every Kindle Unlimited selection. I base that on anecdotal evidence but that sample size was a substantial 1000+ speculative fiction titles over five (?) years and hundreds of DNF's.
I am certain from my small sampling of the nastier commenters that not a one have attempted nearly as many across their reading life. I judge also they suffer from what seems a difficulty with English. It being difficult to I learn and not one of my childhood languages, I would sympathise were these not proud, native born illiterates. I say this with the utmost sadness.
I had written that the book featured humorous plot leap and character instability. I am not about to challenge my previous thoughts. With that, I recommend a scan of negative reviews which are almost always more substantive than the other. That would hopefully yield a more complete view of the series.
I did think that the book's characters are more complete and relatable than most of the US titles featured by Amazon Unlimited, which are less than 10 years or so old. That net includes the entire Unlimited selection in all honesty.
Consider treating this as a hostile site. 🤔
Goodreads do not encourage dIscourse. As an example, I wrote a short review of Powers of the Earth by Travis Corcoran, a badly written, sorry salute to what are now called psychotic January 6, 2021 heroes.
I found the story of a newly rich twit enlisting the military in overthrow of the US government in order that he not pay inheritance tax to be unhealthy and dangerous. This or something like are very popular themes in Unlimited selections, especially the libertarian books and I believe these contributed greatly to a grievance framework for the MAGA movement. Consideration of that possibility should find the "It's just fiction" refrain from Goodreads members cringe.
Travis self-described as libertarian (now anarcho capitalist, as if he could define such nonsensical term) and advocate for the return of chattel slavery (popular belief among MAGA and I believe, some significant percentage of other US whites and BIPOC). He also identified as veteran, employee of an unnamed US agency and admirer of Putin (another popular stance among MAGA).
The writer and six fellow patriots spent something like a year in comments to my short review. Their opinions concerned my lack of intelligence, the evils of socialism, praise for the role of "white men" in history, the social good of slavery and similar.
The last comment was delivered by Claes Rees Jr aka Cgr710 now ka Clayton R Jesse Jr (no longer identifying as Nazi, it seems). After sharing contents of my last message to a Goodreads friend, he grandly declared that They had "won" (?).
I discovered that They had launched a year long flood of vile racist, misogynistic, anti-working class and other comments against it seems, every channel which I listed. This was sometimes done using my name and continues still, several years later.
The physicist, boater, historian, essayist and other female creators were not enchanted by Their charm, intelligence, expertise or wit. Despite that failure, the world's store of ugliness was certainly increased and They did deliver an excellent self-portrait of the US snowflake (whingeing, poorly educated US baby-man) to a multinational audience. This was judged a Victory ??
Goodreads discourse is splendid ?? USA is not a damaged society ??

US science fiction is in a sad state and Amazon are accelerating the decline. With an eighty percent share of ebook sales, they are a marketing force. Currently romantasy and science fiction are standardised with no character depth, questionable plot logic, juvenile dialogue and horrible political message among other failures. Kindle Unlimited encouraged my abandonment of US print and reading itself.
I discovered the BookTube 😍 accidentally in search of science fiction recommendations, Goodreads being not useful. The BookTubers foster communities of thoughtful, curious readers in love with the world of books. I promise that they are far different to the Goodreads environment.
Ominous music begins. 😊 When I began visiting the BooKTube, I found that member gangs were at times organised by writers to attack one and two star reader reviewers of romantasy and romance titles. The same probably occurs in the science fiction space.
The attacks include doxxing, stalking and threats against readers, their family and friends. Those samples are demonstration that US culture thrives on cruelty for the sake of cruelty. The UK unfortunately have Reform, the Conservatives and now Labour who embrace the same core drive.
The comment gangs in defence of problematic character portrayals, themes and dialogue are bad but the support for those reactions from Amazon was truly shocking.
My limited message history was given over to pond scum, allowing them to request through Pine Gap Centre that Australian Security interrogate the one friend whom I occasionally messaged. The attempt on my personal history failed and two customers were left outraged. Only after we shared our experience did Amazon find the harassment concerning.
There was instead of apology or explanation, the removal of all visible signs of harassment. Page format and options returned to normal, all lurkers whom previously I had not been Allowed to remove were disappeared and more. Amazon customer service might be in need of overhaul. 🙂
Recently a seventh ex-employee of EBay was sentenced for harassment of a couple whose small ecommerce channel was deemed unkind to EBay. The couple were awarded several millions and the ex-employee had been the EBAy Chief of of Global Security or some such. With what little restraint was exercised in the past, I suspect more severe behaviour in future.
I suggest a few precautions. Remove all personal information from profile and avoid messaging. Remove all lurkers, those friends who never post. They are likely monitors for gangs or employee dummies not admirers. With the Goodreads penchant for customer page Alterations, the screenshot of the odd, ugly and threatening are invaluable. If only exposed to Goodreads, those should suffice.
Kindle are more serious/dangerous. Do Not use Files, Calendar, Contacts or Email. I inadvertently confirmed that Kindle employees Sign Into email without permission or notice. I doubt that the typical US reader finds that troubling but others might.
Do Not purchase Amazon e-books. You own only the device with any "purchased" titles subject to deletion at whim. There are BookTubers with whom to discuss alternative vendors for both e-books and readers, as well as alternatives to paper purchases.
To mention Goodreads in passing is part of their job but I have unsubscribed from BookTubers who gush about Goodreads and Kindle. They are inadvertent shills and/or unserious people. See FAFO for US examples of the socially acceptable. Ominous music ends. 😊
Be safe and may we all enjoy good reading. 🤗

I wish you a fantastic morning, a pleasant afternoon, a cosy evening, a splendid night and may we all continue learning.
As long as Mr. Hutchinson keeps writing books about Cal Carver, I will keep reading them. Like the rest of the series, the search for Splurt will put a smile on your face, even after a long week.
The Search for Splurt picks up where the wrath of Vajazzle leaves off. The gang has narrowly escaped President Sinclair and they are now jumping back into the frey to try and located Splurt, who sacraficed himself during the previous mission. Thier search takes them through a wormhole of sorts into an alternate dimension where time moves slowly. Space ridiculousness aplenty ensues.
The only reason this got a 4 star review from me was because there were a few pacing issues and to me it did not flow as well as the first two installments. Reguardless, read it.
The Space Team is on the hunt to rescue everyone’s favourite green globby shape shifter from the evil Vajazzle. While still full of laughs and silliness, there’s also a tender undertone to Cal’s dedication to rescuing his little silent buddy. A great addition to the series.
Fun, silly, sci-fi space romp. Really enjoy this series of books - great light relief to lift my mood! Also If they make a film of these books I’d like to suggest Ryan Reynolds to play Cal!
Book #1 was a riotous joy! Book #2 slightly less so, but still very much worth reading and the $2.99 cost. Then we come to book #3.... Sadly, it will be the last Space Team book I invest in. The humor has become forced, and largely lost the organic quality of the first and (to a slightly lesser degree) second books. The characterization of Miz that was developing nicely in book two is basically chucked out the airlock in this one. She's back to being pretty one-dimensional; a horny dog that can be called upon to kick a** as needed, and occasionally throw (very tired) barbs at Loren. In a failed stab at humor, Hutchison actually has her display what amounts to cruelty to a character that has come to love her. Unnecessary, and not funny.
I gave it 3 stars for the simple reason that I actually came to care about the characters through the 1st 3 books; this book alone probably rated 2 stars....
Not a review, just some thoughts for personal reference. Spoilers.
I really only read this because I wanted to find out if Splurt got rescued. He did. But not after enduring years of torment at the hands of Vajazzle.
These books can be amazingly callous. There were a lot of references to the Star Trek red shirts--it was an actual ongoing joke about the Space Team not remember the names of the expendable soldiers who accompanied them. It was kind funny at first, but, like every joke in this series, was beaten to an unfunny death. It didn't help that the planet they landed on was doomed to annihilation, along with all the inhabitants--and entire planet/civilization of disposable red shirts.
I did like how loyal Cal was to Splurt and how determined he was to rescue him when everyone else wanted to give up on him. I doubt I'll continue with the series, but, if I do, it will only be because I want to read more about the Cal/Splurt bromance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Like the previous two books, the Space Team continues to be consistently funny and driven by powerful characters. Cal and friends have kept me coming back with their distinctive personalities and wit that is unique to each character. The style is easy to read and though the prose isn't a work of art itself, it's practical, well-edited, and far more than competent.
I did feel that this novel was a little weaker than the previous books, though. The villain isn't quite as powerful or well characterized as the big bad president in the previous books, and the general lack of splut being, well, around changes the group dynamic. However, it's a minor problem with the specific situation in this novel, but it stands well on its own as a telling of this trope.
Space Team continues to be a hilarious, fun read that's great to relax with.
The Space Team series is very much a parody with a main character that's extremely genre-savvy. It's filled with references to standard scifi (mostly Trek) tropes and runs with it.
The tone of this third part is a fair bit darker than the previous instalments, with more blood, violence and torture than you'd expect.
Oddly, it doesn't lose its sense of fun and wit. Perhaps because the stakes are raised and Cal Carver experiences the consequences for his actions, there is more room for actual character development.
The Search for Splurt is a fun ending to a great first trilogy, wrapping up many storylines and creating some genuinely moving moments. Oh and it's funny. Don't get me wrong: it's funny.
This is possibly the funniest sci-fi series I have ever read. Never mind Hitchhiker's Guide, I want Cal's Guide to the Galaxy! Poor Splurt has sacrificed himself and been captured instead of Cal so the Space Team are compelled to rescue him. Could they succeed without any disasters occurring? Unlikely with a maniac/brainiac mech, the worst space pilot in the universe, an alien werewolf princess, and an idiot petty thief. I love their antics, the imaginative replacement of swearwords and of course that they are so funny and likeable. There is nothing to dislike about this book and I eagerly await their next calamity/adventure.
The gang are hot on the trail of their missing crew mate, Splurt. Their adventure will take them further than they've ever been. There and back again...a Space Team tale of hijinks, Spit Nibs, more aliens, an angry space president, and of course, our favorite two-faced villain, Vajazzle.
HAlarious, action packed and a little touching, this novel is just p!ain fun.
Book three of Space Team was just as good as the other two. Poor Cal had all kinds of bad things happening to him, but showed himself to be a true friend to his "Little Buddy, Splu Spurt. And Miz actually found another man to take Cal's place. There were lots of times where you didn't think the Space Team would survive especially at the end. I am looking forward to book four.
Another fast-paced space adventure space comedy from Barry J. Hutchison.
Did you like the last two "Space Team" books? Then you'll like this one. It's more of the same. Loren crashes the ship, Miz picks her nails and says something sarcastic, then notes that it was sarcasm, Cal makes incredibly stupid life choices that somehow work out for him, and Mech is not a robot.
A quick, fun, sitcom-like read to make you giggle on your commute.
After giving himself up to save the crew, the hunt to get Splurt back begins! The Space Team again rush in, with little to no planning, led by self appointed captain, Cal Carver. This is another good book, Cal at his wise cracking best and the rest of the crew giving as good as they get. All five team members are now well established, book four is calling!!!
The Space Team is trying to escape President Sinclair and the evils of Zertex. In an effort to escape they fall through a vortex landing on an earthquake ridden planet, home to the unfortunately named assassin from the previous book. Will they survive? Of course. How will they survive? That is the question.
It is difficult to describe how extraordinarily good and humorous this writing really is, and what a tremendous enjoyment it is to read. Highly recommend to anyone who wants some fun time reading a book that completely transports you to the finest of escapism.
The series is getting better and better! It may be fun and hilarious, but, there's a lot of in depth of the characters, the story lines are real, showing the flaws and virtues, emotions and sentiments, even though the team try to be gruff and act as " tough guys". Splurt is adorable!
Going to be so sad when I finish this series, red dwarf meets hitchhikers meets star trek meets the a team but even better. Keep it up Barry not laughed out loud to a book since Mort
So glad they Adventures out to bring him back.. this book tore me up a little because it almost felt like the crew wasn’t gonna Make it. But hey if Toby Maguire was my imaginary friend I’d believe too 😍 love these books so fun!
