Nasty women, unite—and read this compendium of fascinating quotations about powerful women through history.
“My passions were all gathered together like fingers that made a fist. Drive is considered aggression today. I knew it then as purpose.” —Bette Davis
When Donald Trump referred to Hillary Clinton as “such a nasty woman” during the last presidential debate in 2016, women everywhere felt a jolt of recognition—whatever their politics or feelings about Clinton. In response, they promptly turned his insult into an empowering slogan. This book celebrates the now-ironic phrase with a collection of quotations by and about strong women, both critical and positive. The words come from figures in ancient history like Cleopatra; founding mothers like Mary Wollstonecraft and Elizabeth Cady Stanton; feminist icons such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan; politicians and government leaders; groundbreakers in arts and culture; celebrities; and the mothers, daughters, and sisters at home.
I received a copy of this book from Harriet McInerney at NewSouth Books in exchange for an honest review, this does not impact my thoughts on the book! however, I really loved this! There were quotes from some of my favourite women, including: Audrey Hepburn, Agatha Christie, JK Rowling and more: so many of these quotes inspired me, uplifted me, and all round moved me! Even though the title directs the book towards women, I think there's something in it for everyone; and often, the quotes could apply to all!
A lot of good quotes but my favorite has to be: "Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind." -Virginia Woolf
This is a book i keep at my desk to reference when i need a good pick me up. I also use it to quote to friends. This is dog eared and marked up with highlighter and underlining with pens
I received this as a gift from a friend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. There doesn’t appear to be any strict formula nor hard and fast organization for this quotes were included. Merely a collection of quotes from many women throughout the ages- everyone from Sappho to Nicki Minaj is represented, and with ponderings on a vast variety of topics. This was a fast and inspiring read, and I’ll probably flip through the pages periodically looking for wisdom, encouragement, and inspiration as needed.
A compilation of quotes from various women. From politicians, to activists, to actresses and so on. There is really much to say about this book other than that its a very quick read and its definitely something that would be more beneficial daily then all at once like I did. The impact would be more impactful and the words would mean so much more because you could really mull it over.
Did I enjoy it, did I see the importance of reminding oneself of your strength and tenacity, yes. I just think it would be better within a year period honestly.
Overall, it really is a good middle finger to a certain orange in office.
I very much liked the variety and formatting of these quotes. Quotes for Nasty Women is a great collection, and one that I would happily recommend or gift to someone.
