It caught my eye when it was sent to me through a BookBub listing because it mentioned that it was set at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Tallahassee, Fl. Being an alum of FAMU, I knew it was based off it. That peaked my curiosity.
I thought it was good overall. I gave it a four for nostalgia's sake and for being realistic to the HBCU experience. The writing could use some improvement. It felt stilted in a lot of areas. Also, there were areas where it was clearly a set up for the next installment of the series, but were way too early or didn't fit what was going on in the moment.
Still, I would recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Laila is now a high school graduate and on this special night, she decides to give her virginity away to her long time drug dealing boyfriend, Travis. She had it all planned out except she wasn't expecting him to get arrested before she could even get to his house to indulge in their special act of love.
Pissed off and over Travis and his situation, Laila decides to embark on a new chapter of her life since she will be going to college in the fall. Once on campus, Laila totally forgets about Travis and has her eyes on a sexy senior named Chris. As her freshman year progresses, Laila develops feelings for Chris and decided to give him her virginity.
Little does she know, one of Chris' exes has plans to get him back. Who will Chris choose? Will Laila lose her virginity in her freshman year of college?
The author does a good job developing Laila and her friend's characters. I think a little bit more could have been given on Chris' background especially since Laila becomes so involved with him. I did enjoy the flow of the story as it gives you a realistic view of college life in regards to the dorms, parties and studying.

I won this book from Goodreads First Reads. I absolutely loved this book and hope there is a sequel. Laila's story about her freshman year of college is very relatable. The friends that she makes are full of mischief and good fun. All the while, maintaining her friendship with her best friend at home is wonderful. Laila made some good decisions before starting college and continues those good decisions by balancing books, boys and parties. Laila is also smart about her virginity, something that isn't always treasured and doesn't give it up to just anyone. The story is very easy to follow and you fall in love with the characters. You care about what happens to them.
I loved this story! It immediately pulled me in from the beginning. It definitely brought me back to my days in college. Really hope there's a sequel, because I would to read more about Laila and Chris!
Although this read a bit slow for me at first, once Laila started to venture out in college, the book picked up a bit. I was glad that she was able to let her ex, Travis, go. She seemed like she has goals and he just wanted to be in the streets.
I loved that Laila was such a loyal and honest friend. I think besides her and her high school best friend, Tanya, relationship, I really liked her and Jennifers' friendship. It's not often that you click with someone instantly and they become a true and genuine friend. I hate what happened to Jennifer; she's deserving of way more than to be hurt how she was. I do hope the thing with her and Mark continues to a long lasting friendship if nothing else. I took pity on Nicole; she was just looking for love or companionship in all the wrong places and in the wrong way. I think her reputation for being easy or overly sexual, was hard for guys to look past and you can't blame a guy for putting you in a f*** buddy position when that's what you lead with🤷🏾♀️. I'm hoping as the series continues, that she gets it together bc she seems like she'd be a dope girlfriend. I loved Monica. I hope she's still doing her genius thang as the books move forward. I also hope she finds a boo, too.
Although I'm glad Laila truly loves Chris, I can't say I'm a fan of their relationship. He seems like a really nice guy, yet they don't mesh too well for me. I guess we'll see how it plays out over her sophomore year and beyond.
Although I think it would be awkward for Tanya, I was hoping her brother, Josh, and Laila actually got a chance to see where things could possibly go between the two of them. Maybe there's still hope😏.
The whole situation with Courtney, Chris's ex, was very bizarre. I mean, it's one thing to cut up over a dude, that was just a fling btw, with his new girlfriend, yet to do it at his graduation, in front of his family🤨. His momma wasn't having no parts of that crazy🤭. I hope she moves on and gets a clue😒.
Again, a very slow start, yet I'm glad I didn't stop reading. I like Laila, her friends, her family and the vibes of her college. Good read for sure.
I am surprised I made it to 25% completion (which was page 70). It was a struggle to make it this far. I wanted to DNF from page 20, but I kept trying to give the book a chance because I actually like college “romance” tropes that take place on an HBCU campus. But I couldn’t suffer through reading this book anymore. I fell asleep multiple times trying to read as far as I did.
Two years ago, I read my first and only book by this author and wrote a review stating I would probably never read another book by this author because I didn’t like her writing style. Evidently, I’m a glutton for punishment because I didn’t stick to my guns and steer clear of this author. Her writing style is not my cup of tea. Her writing style reads like an amateur trying to write their first story. And yes, I realize this was her first book, but even the book I read 2 years ago, which was a more recently written book, had a style that hadn’t matured much from this first book. This book was simply painful to read.
There’s a follow-up book to the series that was written in 2023 that I was curious to read and why I tried to read this earlier work, but I just can’t do it.
This is the first book I've read from this author and I really enjoyed it. This college aged romance focuses on Laila and Chris and their friends, ex's, enemies, first loves and more. I figured out what was going on with Laila's best friend Tanya even before it was confirmed. However, I'm glad that although things were tough for Tanya, she made the decision that was right for her. I enjoyed Nicole, Jennifer and Monica characters. Every girl has that one friend that out there, one that is smart and one that has been through something. This story was funny, sweet and romantic but there was also drama with a stalker and a few arguments between the characters. I do wish that this was a completed story and every year focused on a different character we met in this story, but still having Laila and Chris in the next story. I do look forward to reading more books from this author because I did enjoy this one.
*I wasn't a big fan of the romance choices. Age gaps aren't my thing. Especially when one is freshman age and the other is a senior. *so glad her parents weren't 100% ok with it. You never see that in books/movies! The age thing is never mentioned. It was in this one and I appreciate it! Lol
*the writing was ok. Some of the scenes were rushed. It jumped from one thing to another without much descriptjon of what happened between. Almost like a script/screen write than a novel (in some areas.) *Still looking to see the deeper friendship with the new girls. I want the bond to be tight or close to tight like her and tanya. I love good friendships in books! Melts my heart. Im sure theyll be more as the stories progress. ❤ *read the sneak peek for book two and i am curious.

SPOILER ALERT Great character development: Leila and each of her friends were carved out of a different mold, which gave credence to their characterization. I enjoyed reading the first part of the book, although I was very disappointed in the actions of Leila's best friend, Tanya. Tanya was portrayed as smart, however she viewed having unprotected sex as more important than college. What did she think was going to happen when she became pregnant? I also had difficulties with the relationship between Leila and Chris. He was a healthy male in his prime. I found his willingness to abstain from sex while engaging in repeated bouts of heavy petting, a little far fetched.
So the book wasn’t bad. Just felt like some things could of been lefties out. Very pg. i get why lalia waited until the end just wished it happened a little faster . The Courtney thing seemed unrealistic.. the situation could of definitely been worst. I will read the next book because i am curious about what happens next and i like to give new authors chances wasn’t bad where i had to constantly put it down just hope it becomes more adult in the next book
I love this author I never had read any books by her but j. Nichole wow u did an amazing job with this book I cannot wait for the next one. Everything was well written and the characters laila I feel bad because she wanted Josh but he is just too little too late but u never know what might happen I hope her and chris make it. I won't tell too much but read this if u haven't started it will have u on edge
I thought the story was good because it had a realistic storyline. Laila & her friend’s experiences reminded me of my own in college. It was definitely a page turner and I could not stop wondering what was going to happen next! The only reason I wouldn’t give it a perfect 5 stars, is because I would have liked to seen her love interest’s POV.
I kept reading because of the high ratings, but this is one of the most boring books I've ever read. It was like reading a day by day account of a collage student's Freshman year of college. Aside from the main character's boyfriend's crazy ex-fling, nothing exciting happened. Even the crazy ex-fling was boring. Don't waste your time!
Laila is dealing with being a freshmen at a new school, her best friend is pregnant, and the guy she thought was her everything is in jail! She begins to navigate her freshmen year when she meets Mr. Sexy! Her freshmen year takes an unexpected turn for the better! With new friends, a new man and school work can she juggle it all?
“Freshman Fifteen (Love 101 - Book 1) was an adore story and good read. Actual, this book reminded me of my first day on WU campus and the subsequent adventures. “Back down memory lane” …I could relate too Layla and her camp life experiences. …and each character especially NJS was my Chris (well similar).
A good read for people who are in to the series recommend highly can't wait for the next one of the series a really nice read but long slow to start but picks up towards the end
I liked this story, but there were just too many random details that didn’t add to or enhance the story at all. I rolled my eyes too many times at the characters.
So far I'm loving the way this story is planning out to be and I have a feeling that she will end up with Josh afterall. I think Chris will get bored and want some fresh meat and she will see a different change in him this semester but will see. Great book btw!
I don’t have anything against African-Americans, in fact I grew up with several as my closest friends. This book however used the term “negro” multiple times and I found it in poor taste.
The lack of detail bothered me as well as the grammatical errors. Additionally, I didn't like how things would happen just randomly, with no build up and we don't get to see the characters getting to know each other. A lot of telling not showing in this book.
Enjoyed this novel completely. It brings you back to those old college days. Meeting new and different people from all walks of life, learning to deal with roommates that don't really have a ways you would explore, campus highs and lows. Excellent read and looking for more by this Author
This was a good read. First read by this author. I enjoyed the storyline, reflecting on what these teenagers go through. She didn’t miss a beat. I will definitely read something else by this author
Thoroughly enjoyed a highly recommend it a great set up for ffor the series. Would like to finish the series to see how her life turns out.Keep up the good work.
