This is a telling story of Bebe, an impressionable young woman trying to find true love. Unfortunately her boyfriend Steven has secrets and issues piling up at every turn. Bebe struggles to navigate both her own family troubles as well as Steven’s while looking for clues as to what to do about her rocky relationship. The author narrates like she’s talking to you as a girlfriend and adds little side stories of the character’s extended families along the way. This was an interesting look into the “what if” following the original story “One Brave Thing.”

This novel is a spinoff of Karen Maffeo Creamer's "One Brave Thing," in which we followed the main character, Bebe, through her search for Mr. Right. In this novel, which probes the possibility of Bebe staying with classic bad guy Steven, Creamer brings the reader into a story of doubt, fear, and those subtle - or not so subtle - warning signs in a relationship that say "Leave." The story becomes a riveting and frightening tale of a poor choice gone worse. With sharply constructed real-life voice, we are drawn into Bebe's life, her decision-making, and a story line that quite frankly scared me. I could not put it down.

The warning signs are there, but you keep explaining them away and staying in a bad situation. Think it couldn't happen to you? Bebe probably didn't think it could happen to her either. I really loved the simple writing style of this novel. It didn't get bogged down in flowery descriptions of china patterns, the colors and texture of furniture or the elaborate lace of a wedding dress. Instead it stayed focused on the stark power of the story. I was so disappointed when I had to stop reading about 40 pages from the end to go to work. I hate it when a strong work ethic interferes with a good read! Luckily, my shift passed quickly and I was able to finish this amazing story.
