Can true love prevail against prejudice and deceit?
After a bitter betrayal, Dawson Blackhorse won't allow anyone to run roughshod over his heart again … especially not the woman he was once foolish enough to trust.
The rodeo circuit gave Dawson an escape after his racist boss ran him off. Hank Bartell made it clear no man who was part-Navajo, would buy his ranch or court his daughter. In a single moment, the man destroyed every one of Dawson's dreams.
But when the rodeo brings him to the tiny mountain town of Sawyer, Idaho, he comes face to face with everything he lost.
For nine years, Chloe Bartell hasn’t been able to forget the man who abandoned her. Especially not when she looks into the eyes of their son.
The quiet life Chloe leads in the small town of Sawyer is shattered the day Dawson comes to compete in the rodeo. He's everything she remembers and more. Gorgeous. Muscular. Six foot and change of sexy cowboy. She watches helplessly as he comes face to face with the son he never knew he had. Dawson demands answers but Chloe is determined to keep her distance. When sparks fly, the fire they ignite threatens to burn down the walls she’s built around her broken heart.
Will the pain and loss of their past drive them apart for good? Or can they forgive each other and build a new life, a life they always dreamed of…
"Overdue for Love" is a standalone novella in the Long Valley series. This is the “sweet” version of the book, which means on a heat scale of 1 - 5, it is probably around a 1.5 or so. If you are interested in the “swexy” version (sweet + sexy), please check out the other listing for this book. Oh, and ENJOY!
USA Today Bestselling author Erin Wright has worked every job under the sun, including library director, barista, teacher, website designer, and ranch hand helping brand cattle, before settling into the career she’s always dreamed about: Author.
She still loves coffee, doesn’t love the smell of cow flesh burning, and is currently living out her own love story in a tiny town in rural Idaho.
Dawson and Chloe have a starcrossed love going on, but they don't give into it til after her father tells him some untruths that he believes. Then he says some pretty GD'ed unforgivable things to her. She is so emotionally scarred by this that she actually gets therapy to get past it.
It's the usual plot, boy gets girl pregnant but leaves because he believes lies. 9 years later... he returns and gets pissy about her having his kid. Like he left a forwarding address or something???
That's all fine. A story like this is more about how the author chooses to bring about forgiveness that brings a happy resolution. In this case, I really didn't see why the author had him say those hurtful things, as it was never addressed by them. Sure he feels bad about it in his head, but when he FINALLY realizes how much he hurt her and tries to apologize she cuts him off and forgives him immediately. And by then they'd already gotten together and were all lovey dovey. *shrug*
Safety isn't good

I literally DNF'ed one book in this series. I hated another one. I did like one novella, but that's a pretty low average, and yet I plowed ahead thinking "This one is on my Kindle already. It was free. Eh, I'll give it a go."
So, that was a mistake.
We have the story of Declan and Chloe. Declan works for Chloe's dad, and is planning on buying the ranch from him, once Chloe's dad retires. Chloe's dad has been taking money from Declan's check, but then one day decides he won't see the ranch to Declan because, well, it's implied that he's a racist and doesn't approve of Declan being Indigenous. The author doesn't really explore the racism at all, though. It could have just as easily been that Declan was poor. Or worked for him. There's no back story showing why Chloe's dad has suddenly decided to not sell to Declan. He just tells Declan that the ranch has been in his family a long time, and he wants it to go to someone "in the family".
Here's Stephanie's issue number one: Chloe's dad says it should go to "Chloe's husband". Evidently he's a pos misogynist because his daughter isn't good enough to inherit the family fortune. Nope. Her husband. He also tells Declan that Chloe is engaged to marry a family friend (whose family, of course is also wyt and wealthy). Chloe, however has no idea that she's marrying this dude. So, a little bit of pimp your daughter out for connections kind of thing here.
Stephanie's issue number two: Chloe is twenty and completely spoiled. Fine, I dig character growth. She had been coming on to Declan for two years. He was attracted to her, but didn't act on it because of his deal with her dad (he wanted the ranch). The minute Declan finds out he won't get to buy the ranch, and that Chloe is engaged he becomes a huge jerk. He never questions Chloe on her being engaged, even though she had been flirting with him that same day. Nope. He just finds her and pretty much rapes her. It's not framed as rape, but it's definitely framed as Declan taking her virginity without her being ready, without discussion and consent is not at all implied. We are lead to believe that Chloe is okay with the sex, just not the part after where douchebag finds out she's a virgin and insults her.
This guy is our "hero"?
Fast forward a few years, Declan sees Chloe again. Declan also sees Chloe's son and easily figures out that the kid is his. He jumps right in acting like he has a right to tell Chloe what to do and even hear about her private life. Of fucking course, Declan has been screwing his way through the rodeo circuit while it took Chloe years to have ONE sexual encounter. And, obviously, it wasn't any good. So, yeah, same tired manwhore/celibate or practically celibate relationship. WHY? Single moms can have sex. Crazy, I know.
Oh, and when Declan and Chloe have sex again? He gets her drinking so that she will "loosen up". THAT'S RAPE. Not almost. Not questionable consent. No. If she is drinking and you are plying her with liquor to have sex with her. It's fucking rape.
This book was just all kinds of wrong. Declan was awful. The gender roles were something like out of the 50's. And Chloe was a doormat. Declan fucks up, barely apologizes, steamrolls his way into her life and she's just like "I'm falling for this guy"?
Chloe did have a friend in her life, Adam, who Declan was jealous of. While Chloe had never thought of Adam in a romantic way, I was hoping for a huge twist. Sure, was Chloe going to choose Adam? Of course not. Should Chloe have ended up with Adam? Maybe. I mean, it's a romance so she had to end up with someone I guess. Declan, however was not worthy of getting a HEA.
Obviously, I'm to blame here for going into this one. I knew the author wasn't for me. The book reads like something out of the early 1980's. While there is a definite audience of readers who love the nostalgic feel to this type of writing, I should know by now it's not my thing. Still, I wanted to post the review, if for no other reason that to remind myself of bad book choices I've made.

I have read #4 of the long valley series before, since that was free on amazon and recommended to me and I really liked that one so I had pretty high hopes for this one.
Overdue for love is #3.5 and sadly doesn't live up to my expectations since this one felt stilted at times and very rushed at the end and I even skimmed a couple of times, which I almost never do.
Dawson and Chloe get off to a rough start and he ends up taking her virginity and leaving right after breaking her heart and in the process knocking her up. We fast forward 9 years to a Chloe has a cute little kid, that, surprise surprise is Dawson's and guess who walks into her workplace, yup that's right, Dawson.
From here on we have a lot of going back and forth with Chloe not sure if she even wants Dawson to have anything to do with her and her kid to fluttering bellies and oh, he's so hot.
There were quite a lot of issues, that all got resolved pretty quick and then almost at the end, 70% or something we have a weird part that felt like it was thrown into the story for a little drama and after that I just skimmed to the end since I lost interest.
I'm mostly disappointed since I know this author can write a kickass book and that made this feel half-assed.
Working on someone else ranch when you have fallen for the boss’s daughter isn’t good. When the boss is racist and you are part Navajo it is even worse when the boss thinks you aren’t good enough for her. Thinking Chloe was playing him for a fool he left with his heart broken. She is one he will never forget and holds much bitterness. Chloe herself has issues the only man she has loved left with a painful good bye. The one night of passion left more than unkind words behind. Now face to face again spark fly in more ways than one when a child in thrown in the mix.
I really felt sorry for Chloe her father is something else. She has not had an easy life since Dawson left. I didn’t care for her father at all he was so unkind in so many ways. Chloe really got the bad end but with Dawson back in the picture can things work out for them. They both know they love each other but the other isn’t sure of those feelings. Dawson’s eyes are about to get open in a big way.
I loved the plot and the characters as well as the twists and turns. The author had no trouble hooking me and keeping me turning the pages. I understood where both the characters were coming from. This was a no win for anyone and your heart goes out to both of them for all they had to deal with. I thought this was well written that really pulled the reader in giving you a very entertaining read. I can’t wait for the next one in this series. ****************************
The 'revenge' sex at the start was unpleasant to say the least and I ended up 'dnf'ing at 18% when this turned into a trope that is all too common now and simply made no sense in the context of the background.
The story of Chloe and Dawson is a sweet story. Their story starts out with Dawson working very hard on Chloe's father's ranch, he plans to purchase the ranch from her father who has agreed with the idea. However as time passes her father rethinks this and tells Dawson that he will not be selling the ranch to him as it needs to stay in the family and will go to Chloe's husband. Telling Dawson that Chloe is engaged to a local rancher. This throws Dawson for a tailspin and he does something he should never have done. Nine years later he runs into Chloe again while on the Rodeo Circuit and his life and hers is about to change in a big way. I enjoyed reading this story it was a sweet romance with two likeable characters.
nice story. I love stories dealing with issues like prejudice, native, unknown child. I found this story nice, but I found the characters lacking depth, I would have loved to know more about the heroes, , their background, their struggle, how they overcame what fate brought them in the face. I disliked Chloe at the beginning, j trying to shamelessly excite Dawson, but I did loved her more after, but found that she just welcomed him back too quickly. of course I appreciate Dawson, but the fact that he was native, brought almost nothing to the story, I did love the kid-parents interaction . nice, easy read but not my favourite
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I adore Erin Wright's books, with good reason. She is an exceptional writer. Her books are filled with romance and passion, steamy love scenes, wonderful characters and great storylines. Overdue For Love is about Dawson and Chloe, he has worked for Chloe's father, on his horse ranch for years, with the promise that one day it would be his ranch. Chloe has been crushing on Dawson for the last 2 years, flirting with him nonstop, but Dawson, knowing it would cost him everything he's working for, has done his best to keep his distance from her. Then Chloe's father reveals to Dawson that he does not plan to sell him the ranch, that Chloe is going to marry their neighbor and the ranch will be theirs. Dawson is devastated by this news and getting back at Chloe and her father, seduces her, verbally rips into her then leaves. 9 years later, Dawson walks into a diner and there is Chloe, working as a waitress! As if that isn't shocking enough, she has a son, Tommy, a dead ringer, mini me of Dawson! Dawson can't believe he has a son and Chloe wants nothing to do with him. She just wants him to go away and leave her and Tommy alone. A lot of hurt has happened between these 2 in the past, can they get over it and have a friendly relationship for Tommy's sake? Could they ever be more than just Tommy's parents? There's only one way to find out...Read the book!
I really enjoyed reading about Chloe and how much she has grown since the beginning of the book. When she was young and barely legal she was throwing herself at Dawson without thinking of the consequences it could mean with her father. She was written as desperate and selfish and this bugged me.
However when we meet up with her again, she is a hard worker, loyal friend and wonderful mother. Being forced to grow up looks good on her. I really liked this Chloe. She was determined, resourceful and not willing to give up or give in to her father. I loved watching her with Dawson. He had hurt her and she was careful and cautious with him concerning her son.
I really liked Dawson in this book. Even though he was angry the first chunk of the book, he had every right to be. First with Chloe's father and then Chloe. He left that ranch and became something on the rodeo circuit and now he wants to put down roots. Walking into a diner might have been the best thing for him.
I loved how quickly and passionately Dawson took to being a father. He knew right away that Tommy was his and from that very moment, his life changed. He knew where he wants to be and who he wanted to be with.
Chloe is a rich spoiled brat whose father has every specific plans for her. Dawson is a Native American who works for her father on his ranch. These two have been eyeing each other for a long time and while Chloe is doing everything she can to capture his attention, he is behaving himself because her father has promised that he can eventually buy the ranch. That is until he changes his mind (as if there was ever a chance Daddy would consider a Native as a suitable son-in-law). Dawson leaves the ranch and becomes a professional Rodeo calf roper, but not before he takes his revenge out on Chloe. Fast forward nine years and they see each other again in Sawyer, Idaho - she working as a waitress and he's in town for the rodeo. When a young boy runs into the diner who looks much like Dawson, he knows he has a son. He won't give up until she relents and lets the two of them get acquainted. As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that neither has forgotten the other and there's still something between them. This is an excellent story that is wonderfully written about love, family, and patience.
I really enjoyed reading this contemporary western romance novella. Many people purchase a book by storyline for that reason I don’t do storyline spoilers. I feel it is unfair to the author to describe the book when writing is their livelihood. This novel is a winner! It had all the elements I look for in a well written romance novella: a well thought out and executed storyline, writing that flowed smoothly from beginning to end, characters that were well developed and engaging (adored Tommy!) I was so totally engrossed in Chloe and Dawson’s story and absolutely loved Erin’s beautiful written epilogue. While there were emotional issues that Chloe and Dawson needed to address as well as sexual tension between them, their story was also heartwarming and made me smile. If you want to read an exceptionally good love story this is the novel for you. I highly recommend “Overdue For Love” and I know you will enjoy reading it as much as I did. I received a ARC of this book in exchange for my review. It was a pleasure to give my honest opinion about the book.
A great romance read by Erin Wright about Dawson and Chloe. Dawson was a ranch manager at Chloe's dad's ranch and she had been lusting and doing everything she can for Dawson to notice her for 2 years. The story starts with their first encounter but it wasn't very romantic, in fact Dawson took out his revenge on Chloe and then left the next day, feeling betrayed by her dad and her. Fast forward 9 years and he spots her in a diner working as a waitress, he's confused since she came from great wealth. When Chloe recognizes him she is anxious to get rid of him...she's hiding a secret and doesn't want him to know. When he figures out the secret he doesn't leave her alone and the past comes back with revelations none of them were aware of. A great short romantic read with some steamy scenes and what I enjoyed most is that both Dawson and Chloe didn't dwell on the past, they discussed it but in the end didn't let that get between them...living in the present and looking towards the future. *I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book*
Dawson Blackhorse works at the Bartell Ranch and has been working, and paying to one day own the Ranch. He needs to stay away from Chloe Bartell. She's a temptation that he must resist! When Dawson finds out that Hank Dawson pulls the rug out from under Dawson feet, that he's backing out of the deal. Hank not only returned Dawson's money plus interest, he informed Dawson about Chloe's upcoming wedding to another man. He took his anger out on Chloe and left. Fast forward 9-years later Dawson runs into Chloe in a diner that she works at.
My feelings went from anger, to disappointment, to anticipation and happiness with how Dawson and Chloe reconnected. A great quick read about hardworking individuals who discover love where they never expected to find it.
I volunteered to review an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Started really good, then it remembered it was a novella
I liked the pacing up until 40-50%. Then it just went too quick. But for the first part, Chloe & Dawson felt real (even if I didn't like Chloe when she was 20). You really felt their emotions & they seemed genuine. Then Dawson made some stupid out of nowhere comment & they were sucking face. Oh and days later he intentionally fed her wine coolers so she could "relax" enough to sleep with him. I think if he just tried to date her & not make it seem like he was constantly ready to jump her, she would have slept with him when the time was right & he wouldn't have had to get her drunk first. I wish it would have been slower paced so we could have seen the romance happen at a more natural pace, the things that annoyed me wouldn't have had to happen & I would have enjoyed it better. But oh well.
Another gem in this series. Interesting concept. Spoiled rich girl Chloe. Daughter of a rich racist farmland owner and Dawson. Part navajo indian, and not at all what Chloes father had in mind for his only daughter. Being told he will never get the farm he’d been promised, because he’s not “good “ enough. “White “ enough.. he stalks out of the house angrily only to run into Chloe whom he had been resisting. Then, in one moment of reckless and anger passion with Chloe, Dawson disappears. 9 years later he runs into Chloe. Working as a waitress at a diner. Never having known he fathered a son with her that night. A child her father tried to get rid of. Beautiful story about their journey back to each other. Cant wait to read the next story.
I received a free copy of this book but voluntarily reviewed it.
This is the story of Chloe Bartel and Dawson Blackhorse. Chloe lives a life of luxury with her father on his horse ranch, and Dawson works on the ranch.
Dawson, due to a very harsh betrayal by Chloe’s father and the belief that both Chloe and her father are playing games with him, Dawson takes his bitterness out on Chloe, an action that ruins Chloe’s life.
They meet again nine years later. Dawson is on the rodeo circuit still working to save up money to buy his own ranch. Chloe is a waitress at a café. Dawson still is attracted to Chloe and attempts to become reacquainted with her. Chloe is still bitterly angry with him and won’t have anything to do with him.
Dawson discovers that Chloe has a son, Tommy, who looks exactly like him. Dawson wants to have a relationship with Tommy. However, he realizes that he needs to earn Chloe’s trust.
This book captivated me from the very beginning since the action begins immediately. However, I did not like Dawson at first because his action is extremely difficult to accept. I understood that he had been treated abominably by her father, but I felt he was wrong to take his anger out on Chloe in the way he did.
When they meet again, and Chloe explains everything to him, he realizes the enormity of his mistake. He feels guilty and apologizes. He attempts to earn Chloe’s trust by taking over some of her farm chores and using his charm. However, because I was so involved in the story and could feel her pain, I found it difficult to change my opinion of him based only on an apology. I really needed him to grovel more considering the total affect his actions had on Chloe’s life. Because of that, I found it difficult to forgive him easily.
In spite of that, I enjoyed this book, and had trouble putting it down until I had finished it. Although this book is part of a series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone.
Wright has written another wonderfully steamy western romance novella. This one is complete with love gone wrong and a second chance to make it all alright.
The characters in this short book are remarkably well developed and the story unfolds at a great pace. None of these things are easily accomplished by just any author in a book of this length.
I highly recommend devouring this one in an afternoon to fans of the steamy western romance genre.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
This was a well written book with great characters and a strong plot. A second chance love story with lots of twists and turns. Chloe is the pampered daughter of a racist jerk who does not want her to get involved with Dawson who is one of his ranch hands and part Indian. He leaves town after thinking Chloe and her Dad are using him and doesn't return for nine years. He had no clue that their night of passion produced a son. Not wanting to be a spoiler, I will say no more. But you will love this book, it's full of page turning emotion. I voluntarily reviewed an arc copy of this book
Communication is golden. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. There is no room for bigotry either. At the end of the day, we all bleed the same color. Ms. Wright developed a beautiful story that shows how a happy ever after can happen when not falling into others discriminations and learning to communicate. Overall quality of writing was really good. No cheating or cliffhanger. There were some steamy intimacy scenes and yes.... you get a happy ever after. Enjoy
But I wished for more. Like Chloe give Dawson a little more hell. The man took your v-card and left you with child. She has no one to turn to since her father kicks her out and she essentially struggled to get where she is now with their son. The angst was good but it needed more rather syrupy sweet where after maybe a week max they’re in each other’s arms and bed. I mean I like this story more than Bundle of Love but it’s just missing more and it’s a little too short.
The way he treated Chloe after taking her virginity is just disgusting. How can this veil conniving man be the hero. And after 5 minutes being back in her life he is being an disgusting judgemental asshole again. No respect for who she is as a woman or as a mother. Oooh wowww her looseness was a direct result of getting her drunk, which meant, his plan worked. That sounds closer to rape and abuse and nothing like consent to having sex. He was forgiven way to easy. And I wanted to read something about her dad when they went to see him…..
I am voluntarily reviewing Overdue for Love by Erin Wright after receiving an Advanced Reader Copy.
Another awesome book by Erin Wright. Dawson was screwed over by Chloe's dad after he told him he was not going to sell him the property after Dawson worked hard for several years to get it back up and running. Chloe has been flirting and flaunting herself in front of Dawson for the past two years but he always kept his distance even though he really wanted her. The day he was told he wouldn't be able to buy the property and that Chloe was getting married to someone else he was mad and when he found Chloe in the pool room he had took her virginity and then said some mean things to her and left not knowing he had gotten her pregnant that night. Nine years later after being on the rodeo circuit he is contemplating leaving the rodeo and finds Chloe working in a diner and then her son almost runs him over as he comes into the diner. After he gets a good look at the boy he realizes that he is his son. Can they get past the things in their past and figure out they still have feelings for each other or is there too much hatred in the way?
A sweet love 💘 story that starts off with so much misunderstanding. At times sad and thoughtful but with so much promise of a bright and wonderful future. Dawson and Chloe have spent nine years apart and have so much to overcome but decide to start fresh with hope. A lovely story of family and how love 💘 can endure.
This was surprisingly really good! I only read it because it was free, but it had a lot of conflict in the beginning and turned out being an interesting story with a happy ending. Very detailed scenes, felt like I was Chloe! Honestly to sum it up, it was a book about miscommunication between to lovers.
Dawson & Chloe shared one time together and disappeared from each other's lives. Nine years later, while on the rodeo circuit Dawson runs smack dab into Chloe....and their son. Determined to be part of his son's life, Dawson decides to stay put.
This is a second chance romance with perfectly flawed characters. Perfect for curling up in your favorite chair and escaping for a little bit.
This is a yummy second chance romance that begins with two betrayals of the worst kind. Then nine years later, Dawson and Chloe have a chance meeting at a diner and Dawson comes face-to-face with the result of his betrayal against Chloe. You will have to read to see if Dawson and Chloe can forgive past hurts and forge a new love that will lead to the forever family they both need.
God, this man is infuriating! Entitled, demanding and a complete asshole. He forced himself on her more than once, and I just can't believe this guy's the hero. I've read books where the asshole ex ( who's the villain of the story) is less of an asshole than Dawson. DNF. It was becoming too infuriating. I don't understand how this got such a high rating.
