Jack is a thirty-four-year-old police detective that works on a case. The body that they’ve found was with the cross carved into the chest. Years ago, there were a similar case, twelve bodies had been found but there was one survivor, Will. Will don’t trust people, he was in hiding most of his life because of his traumatic experience.

"According to the reports, during his month in captivity, Will had been starved, beaten frequently, cut, and burned repeatedly."

When Will comes for interviewing with Jack, he intrigues Jack. Will received a threatening letter so he needs protection and Jack’s boss assigned him for protecting Will. The question is: how does Jack survive from spending nights with Will and can he protect him properly?

The story was reaaaally slow and without excitement. I got bored and easily distracted. But it’s fair to say the characters were good and likable and that was the only thing that made me read the story until the end. Jack was so protective and possessive. He had a little temper. I thought maybe Will is weak because he was a victim but I was so wrong. He was so brave and strong. The story told in dual POV, 3rd person. It's a standalone. Please remember it was just my opinion, hope you enjoy it more than me!

Wow, I'm impressed with this first time author. The story wasn't perfect by any means, but I wasn't bored and I enjoyed both characters a great deal. The suspense takes a backseat to the romance but I can't say I minded at all. It was sweet, simple, and rather romantic.

Jack is a anti-social grumpy bear with a heart of gold which is one of my favorite tropes. Will has endured much in his life but has somehow managed to hang on to his good nature and sweetness. He was vulnerable but was strong as steel. These two were good for and to each other. Virtually no angst. These two communicate and don't play games. There's a almost conflict near the end but it gets wrapped up really quickly.

It was a bit too simple though and the dialogue sometimes didn't flow well but overall I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more by this author.

I went back and forth with myself for quite some time before finally deciding to grab this one. Ultimately, I couldn’t ignore the draw I had to the gorgeous cover—Natasha Snow does such beautiful work—or the fact that the author has a pic of a black kitty on her NineStar Press bio page. I’m not kidding! That was the deciding factor. So, thank you, Lu!

In all seriousness, though, Saved, by Karrie Roman, turned out to be such a good read. One of those pleasant surprise books that, though it wasn’t perfect, you want to tell other people to take a chance on, too. There could have been more character development and a bit of fleshing out, and it lacked a little polish and depth—particularly in the first half—but I liked the storyline very much. And, the writing seemed much stronger in the second half; there was less telling, and more showing, and I felt like everything started to come together.

I ended up liking the two MCs a lot. Jack is much different than he initially seems. When we meet him, he definitely comes across as a hothead, and a bit of a loose cannon. Once you get to know him, however, you realize how different he is than how he appears on the outside. There is much more to him. We see what a great friend and work partner he is. We get a couple of glimpses into his life—he had a grandpa who sounded absolutely amazing. And, we see how much Will softens him. In the book, Jack alludes to feeling peaceful around Will. I like that. I liked seeing the softer side of him. There is no doubt as to what kind of detective he is. It’s obvious he cares a lot about the case, and catching this killer; he’s a beast when it comes to the job. So, it was good to see him accepting and getting to know Will.

I looooooooved Will. It takes some time to peel back his layers, and see his true mettle. But, once you get to know him, you see this incredibly strong, brave, resilient fighter. He was amazing. To go through what he’s been through and come out the other side, and to face what he faces in this book, takes the kind of fortitude I can only begin to imagine. Will just wants to be ‘normal’, to experience love. He has never had a relationship, or really experienced intimacy, and he absolutely craves those things. I was not at all surprised when he fell hard for his protector, Jack.

“Never had he felt so close, so intimate with another person. It was a heady feeling. Knowing he could share anything with Jack without fear of mockery or rejection, feeling absolutely safe with another human being both physically and emotionally was something to be treasured.”

I liked these guys together. Their getting-to-know-you phase happened while Jack was staying at Will’s as his security detail, and I did find the relationship development a little bit lacking. There were moments and intimate conversations that were alluded to, and which I would have really liked to see much more of on the page, but, ultimately, I did fall for them as a couple. Roman definitely pulls off the power and emotion of what they feel for each other during the climax and final parts of the story.

Overall, I was very impressed by this debut novel. Though, as I said, in places I wish it had been fleshed out a little bit more, it was totally gripping and suspenseful. The second half was especially fast-paced and tension-filled, and had me on the edge of my seat. So glad I picked this one up. Give it a shot, guys! And, keep your eyes peeled for new stuff from this author. I feel like she’s going to be one to look out for!

Considering this is a debut novel, I'm always a bit wary. However, I'm glad I tried Saved by Karrie Roman. Although this story is not perfect and I have a few things to pick upon, Saved exceed my expectation for a debut.

Detective Jack Mitchell sounds like your stereotypical harden cop who is a hothead with no self control and basically acting like a jackass. Being a detective, he was essentially married to his job, if he is the marrying type. When a copycat serial killer recently surface, Jack was met with the most mesmerizing man that ever capture his interest, the one who survive the serial killer six years ago, Will Blaikie.

Will Blaikie is a survivor and despite his tendency to live out a life as a hermit after his ordeal, he is no weaklings. When the police came banging at his door, Will knew that his day living as an anonymous is coming to an end and he had to face another monster again.

Considering I'm more of a romance reader, the lack of actual concrete police procedural plot didn't bother me. But I need to point out that Jack and his partner, Kate didn't do much detective work beside the mundane interviewing random people and waiting for something to happen. The only part that have me grappling my kindle is during the final show down with the killer, but that was also a brief encounter. Bottom line, this book isn't heavy on suspense.

The part that really engaged me is the romance department between Jack and Will. I like the slow burn romance that took the time to develop and both characters takes time to know each other. The reason that they were force to spend time together sounds rather far fetch to me. Isn't the serial killer gotta know where they both staying at? I'm expecting the police to put Will under something similar to witness protection program and not something so obvious like Jack's home. I'm no expert in protocol, but I don't feel like they should even be going out on a date in public, even though is a pretty romantic date.

Talking about romantic, Jack really make me swoon multiple times. Even though he acts like a brute most of the time on his job, when it comes to Will, Jack is a total putty on Will's hand. I love seeing Jack going all out wanting to protect and keep Will safe. Despite Will's baggage, he is a man who isn't afraid to love and he had so much to offer. He is such a courageous young man who is just waiting for the right person to bring him out of his shell.

In Saved, there is some minor suspense, a solid romance development and the right amount of sappiness. I will definitely in the look out for the next release by Karrie Roman.

So if you're thinking this sounds like Aftermath by Cara Dee I would agree. I bought it with high hopes this would be similar. Judging by how many people ask about a book similar to that - and how few are out there - I'm not the only one who was mesmerized by that title. This is not that title and similar in description only. In execution it's like comparing BDSM and MPREG. Not remotely similar.

This is more romance than cop procedural and more cop procedural than capture/kidnapping. I hope that makes sense. It's actually more a merge of all three - light on the angst, heavy on "saving", and with non existent really torture or other clear idea of the kidnappings. The writing is good - a few odd phrases and every once in a while a sort of strangely constructed sentence that caused me to read twice - but not sure that's grammar or just Aussie speak.

Up until about 60% this was really more 2.5-3 stars for me. I just was not connecting with either MC - it felt very blurry. There are lots of expository paragraphs about "things" but those always leave me detached and distanced from the characters. The last 20% just made the whole book - you get more suspense in feeling - though not tension (unfortunately) - and you get the guys feelings in a more visible and tangible way. There's some great dirty talk that lasts for like a couple minutes. I was like 'NOOOO...I want more!" - sometimes I roll my eyes. Not so here. It just FIT. I needed more.

As a debut author this is above many (many!) others I've read. I would advise not to be scared to go to the dark places, to really "factify" procedurals (some things here cops would never do - regardless of their location), and to bring the grit, the dirty talk, the no holds barred sex like it's even more desperate. It's like I can see inside the author are all these possibilities - and while, in this one, the safe was always chosen over the risk - I would advocate strongly to go deeper and don't be afraid to let out the nasty.

Review:
Wow, check out this new author. I was shocked to read that Saved is Karrie Roman’s debut novel. Call me impressed. Saved had me flipping those pages faster than my kindle could keep up. The exciting drama involves a copycat serial killer, the only surviving victim of the original serial killer and a gruff detective who keeps everyone at arm’s length. This was such an exciting story. Jack Mitchell is a seasoned detective who doesn’t believe that he deserves a chance at a relationship. When dead bodies start showing up resembling the same pattern of a serial killer six years ago Jack keeps hitting dead ends. When he finally locates Will Blaikie, the only surviving victim his protective side comes out. Will lives a very sheltered, lonely life. When Jack agrees to become part of Will’s protection detail they begin to have feelings towards each other. The chemistry heats up during the time that they spend together. Meanwhile, the copycat killer has also located Will and he will stop at nothing to finish what the original killer could not. The pacing of this story is fast and exciting. It is set in Sydney, Australia with a “Criminal Minds” feel. There is an exciting conclusion to this story with a dramatic surprise. The characters in this story have a very real feel to them. I not only connected with the two main characters, Will and Jack, but Jack’s partner Kate, a no-nonsense, take-charge woman with all the compassion that Jack lacks. There is also Pete, Jack’s bear of a boss that is more Teddy the Grizzly. This was an exciting, well-written book written by what appears to be a very talented author. I hope to see more from her in the future.

This book reminded me of my cousin's wedding.

Preacher 1: Dear Father, lord, we thank you, father lord, for being with us today, lord, father lord, and bestowing your blessings, father lord, on this young couple, father lord. (and really, pick one, father or lord, but not fatherlord. ugh)

Apparently the preacher at my cousin's wedding and the characters in this book forget who they are talking to if they don't constantly repeat their names. Or maybe they are afraid they will lose the person's attention if they don't say their name at least once in every sentence. Either way, it makes for an unbearable read.

Hmm. I had a hard time rating this book, so I ended up choosing three stars.

Jack is a temperamental cop who doesn't really do relationships. He's also unapologetically bisexual, which is refreshing, because I really hate the "gay for you" trope (because bisexuals apparently don't exist?) or someone angsting over their sexuality because they're attracted to both men and women. Nope, Jack doesn't do any of that shit, which is great. Will, I presume, is gay - although his romantic development has been severely curtailed because of the trauma he had suffered in his past. He's the only living victim of a serial killer, and he spends much of his life lonely and alone. But now a copycat killer is making an appearance, and the police are concerned that Will may become one of the killer's next victims.

The first half of the book dragged in my opinion, and I just didn't connect well with the writing style, either. I mean, it was okay, but I didn't really capture my attention. But things started picking up about halfway through, and towards the end there was some really good suspense, so I'm glad that I stuck with it.

First off, I liked that it had a total Copycat vibe, especially in the beginning. I really enjoy that movie, and I'm surprised that it's not more popular.

I also liked that, as I previously mentioned, there wasn't any coming out angst. Jack's bisexual, Will's gay (I think?), and they like one another. The drama came from other places.

Although...considering that Will is the only surviving victim of a serial killer AND he had to watch the serial killer torture and kill people, I'm actually surprised by the lack of angst in the book. I mean, I was expecting some serious hurt/comfort on these pages, and it wasn't there. Granted, the events took place six years before and Will has had some intensive therapy since then, but I was really surprised that this book was fairly angst-free.

The relationship between Jack and Will was definitely a slow burn and slow to build, which I appreciate. Also, I was a bit envious of their relationship, since they were both super into books and not much for television and talked a lot about all sorts of things - two quiet introverted booklovers getting to know one another. I don't know how to explain it well, but argh, yes please times a thousand to this. That's kind of the relationship I thought that I would always find as an adult (still haven't), so colour me a bit green with envy. ;)

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

I love finding new authors. Saved is Karrie Roman’s debut novel and she is definitely an author I will be watching out for in the future.

Will Blaikie suffered at the hands of a mad man and was the only victim to survive however the effects of his imprisonment and torture are still ruling his life. Plagued by nightmares and almost housebound due to fear Will lives a solitary life with an aging dog who farts a lot. The story doesn’t delve too much into Will’s past but we know enough to realise quickly that when young men start going missing the Police have a copycat on their hands and once again it appears the monster has set his sights on Will.

Detective Jack Mitchell is a grumpy arse but he takes his job very seriously. He is frustrated as hell when yet another young man goes missing and he turns to Will to see if he can remember anything that will aid his investigation. Although they don’t exactly hit it off when they first meet there is an undeniable attraction between the two men that deepens when Jack has to spend every night with Will as his protector. There is a definite insta something going on here but it’s not exactly love but nor is it lust – it’s too romantic for either of those. Both men feel it and both men struggle with it a little due to who they are. Will has no relationship experience at all but he feels ready to change that as he feels so safe around Jack. Jack is a loner and isn’t used to people being in his space but he finds suddenly that he doesn’t like being away from Will.

Before either man can really get to grips with how they are feeling the copycat strikes again and everyone’s lives are turned upside down. For Jack saving Will is all that matters but when he fails it’s left to Will to conquer his fears and defeat his monsters. I would highly recommend Saved if you are looking for a sexy romance with a thrill.

Meh. This one did nothing for me. I was bored, to be honest. For this being a serial killer book there was little to no action. Bored watching Will play monopoly or reading. Bored watching Jack get mad at everyone, except Will.

This also had my number 2 pet peeve in it.

Jack, I'm here. I don't know what I'm doing, Jack.
It's okay, Will. We'll figure it out together, Will, I promise.
But, Jack, what about Henley?
Oh Will, I'm so sorry I forgot.
It's okay, Jack.
Jack, what are you doing?
Pacing Will, cause I'm bored. Hey, Will, wanna go get some breakfast? I mean, there's a serial killer out there looking for you but we can walk somewhere to get some food. Don't you think Will?
You know Jack, I barely left the house before I met you and now there's another guy after me. But, yeah, Jack, let's leave the safety of the house. It'll be a good time, Jack.

UGH! The previous conversation is entire made up, except for the constant repeating of names.

> > Judging a Book by it's Cover < <
In thumbnail size, the cover does not have a lot to catch your attention other than a few wisps of electric pink. The title is hard to read. If, for some chance, it does catch your eye and you click on it and see the larger version of the cover, you'll see a man bowed down with forehead resting on clasped hands. The title is now legible, but the font, color, or combination is not strong. Still, if it intrigues you enough to this point, the synopsis just may GRAB you. It sounds like a darker crime drama with romantic elements.

> > Looking Deeper < <
POV ~> Third person
Setting ~> Australia - Moderate AU spelling and terminology.

Six years ago, Will survived a serial killer's torturous captivity. Broken, physically and mentally, he still is not sure he'll ever fully recover from the ordeal, but he tries to live a decent life. But now, somehow, the monster is back... and it has it's eyes set on Will once again!
Jack is a homicide detective. He never believed Will was an accomplice like some did and the media hinted at. "How else would he have survived?" they asked. When scouring the files, he sees nothing but a broken victim. Now he and his partner are tasked with finding and bringing in the man that's eluded them, having lived off-the-grid since being released from the hospital.
There's a madman on the loose, determined to live up to his legacy.
There's a detective that never believed that his job allowed for a loving relationship.
There's a broken man with a fighter's spirit and a heart yearning to be "normal".
It's a murder mystery, darker crime drama. Though the topics of content are dark, the details are not quite explicit - more like glossed over.
The cast is rich and full without being overwhelming. Dialogue and interactions are spot-on. The dynamics and depth of the plot was spectacular and the story progressed fluidly. There were plenty of hurdles along the way, which were handled maturely. Predictability was minimal to nil. The conclusion is good; solid enough to be satisfying, though I'd hope to later maybe read more on Stuart and Kyle's story and maybe see Jack and Will in the background continuing theirs.
I really enjoyed the structure and style of this author and since I'd not read anything by her before, I just went to see what else can be added to my TBR, but discovered this is her DEBUT BOOK!?!? Holy crap on toast, color me IMPRESSED! Karrie Roman is one to watch out for!!

I received a copy to read and review for Wicked Reads

I really wanted to love this book but found myself skimming through it at times. There was sooo much inner monologue and description at times that I got bored. I wanted more Will and Jack. I didn't feel the connection between them like I had hoped. The plot was good, it was just to drawn out and wordy for me. If there would have been more scenes with Jack and Will actually talking to each other and less us hearing what they were thinking in their head I think I would have enjoyed it more.

Karrie Roman is a debut author and I thought she did a tremendous job in putting together a story that combined both mystery/thriller and romance.

I had flashbacks to the 90's movies Copy Cat and The Net. It was such a rush to be able to use those story lines, Karrie's writing, and my imagination to create the ultimate fantasy.

I love a good Australian tale that does justice to our country! Sometimes things get too stereotypical and it's frustrating - but this blends in perfectly alongside books from the US and UK which is fantastic!
The story revolves around a copycat killer who is targeting his hero's former victim, Will. Will is still recovering from when he had been kidnapped and groomed to be his partner and has cut himself off from society.
Jack is an officer who is handling the case of the copycat killer, thus meeting Will as he tries to understand what is going through this person's mind.
The story itself was well-paced with an underlying tension. As a reader, I wondered if I was going to see the torture that had happened to Will or if it was only going to be briefly mentioned and then brushed aside.
It brings into focus issues in our society such as a victim being plagued by letters and photographers not letting them having any peace while they try to reconstruct their lives. I loved this outlook as many authors focus too much on the romance or the brutality of what happened and rarely think about what happens to the victims afterwards.
I had to take half a star off for repetitive sentences throughout the story, such as:
"He wasn’t sure where the guns were, but there was no way that was going to stop him now; Andrews had just waved a red flag in front of Jack, and Jack attacked... Jack still didn’t know where the guns were, having lost track of them." (p 160) We already knew he didn't know where the gun was, so repeating that again drew me out of the story for a moment as I thought, "Have I already read this part? Did I lose my part? Why is this sentence the same?" Then I would go and check to make sure I wasn't going crazy that the other sentence was there!
I had to take another star off for the amount of pop culture references thrown around everywhere. Especially in the first few chapters, quite a few names of shows and authors were thrown around and it was something I had to get used to. It might have been more interesting if maybe one of them had known all the references and the other hadn't. Considering Jack's job, does he have the time to be watching a show like The Walking Dead? Maybe he might only know famous movies because he might not have the time to sit down and watch hours of a TV show? I feel like a little bit more thought could have gone into that.
One of the best characters was Kate for two major reasons. One, her smartass attitude to Jack. "“Uncle Jack? We both know you are trying to teach them that your name is Tony Stark. Although why I don’t know. Tony Stark is an arrogant… Oh wait…yeah, I get it.”" (p 19) and that the author was able to incorporate a female character well! I've read TOO MANY male/male love stories where the female characters are reduced to nothing more than a bitchy woman who tries to ruin the romance, or crazy, or just simply the villain of the story. Kate was sweet, funny, and was 'one of the boys' without being over the top. I give the author a round of applause.

Saved is a compelling and suspenseful action-romance by Karrie Roman.

Jack and Will's romance develops slowly, in a sweet and tender way, as they become friends and then more. They compliment each other so well, as they are unique characters who help each other start over

Saved contains a copy-cat killer, an intense search for him, and some tough situations. It's a great pace and will leave you fully satisfied. I definitely recommend this Karrie Roman book.

Saved by Karrie Roman is a gritty read that has a who dun it type quality to it. I loved this one. Great mystery and intense romance.
Jack is trying to catch a copycat killer. He doesn’t have the best people skills. He is the last person you want comforting you. He sees the seedier side of humanity and it has jaded him.
Will could tolerate small groups of people. He doesn’t trust anyone. Holds up in his apartment. He is terrified. He doesn’t know anything about the cases and doesn’t want to rehash the past. He was a victim and held captive and doesn’t want a repeat of the past ever.
They think because the last killer wanted Will to be like him. Made will watch killings and brought home, someone, for him to kill that he might be the new copycat killer.
Jack, however, doesn’t believe that he just has to prove it.

These two have had the worse happen to them and survived. They are stronger than they think and together they set the sheets on fire. I loved this mystery thriller and want more in the future.

It was good, quite enjoyable but being about series killers I wanted more blood and Gore. Oh God I sound creepy

It's an okay story. The police were very focused on the case, though the result was rather slow coming, but the romance was too long-winded and made me skip pages a few times.

I leave it to others to entice you to this book as they enticed me.
