After years of living a contented life in Brooklyn, musician and barista, Mateo Schumacher is summoned back to his New England home town by an unsettling phone call. Something is amiss. He quickly finds himself enmeshed in his mother's odd behaviors and ultimately to the silences that have held his family hostage from the time of his beloved grandfather's childhood. Mateo nearly falls victim to the consequences of these secrets before the family is finally able to speak the truth about the past.
The story chronicles the lives of a family whose ties are pulled apart and then reunited. It is a compelling story that draws the reader into the characters. Most of the characters are strongly portrayed and the plot flows well; however I felt that there was something lacking in depth. Perhaps that will come in the sequel, "Journeys" which I look forward to reading.
