Rate this book
The only thing standing between me and death is my secret.

I’m a Legacy—a secret I’d planned on taking to my grave. Gareth, the enigmatic leader of the Supernatural Guild, knows it, but can I trust him to keep it? When mysterious deaths occur as a result of magic that mimics my own, I no longer have to worry about Gareth exposing me – it will be one of my own that does. Another Legacy is causing the chaos, and I’m forced to hunt my own kind. It seems simple, but we’ve existed for as long as we have because we’re better hunters than prey.

I’m forced to work with Gareth to clear my name and find the Legacy responsible. Not only is my secret about to be revealed—so is his. Gareth is much more dangerous than I expected. Is he my friend or my enemy?

McKenzie Hunter is the author of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and paranormal romance books. She discovered early that new adventures were just a page-turn away; all she had to do was read a book. She’s had her share of escapades from hanging out with vamps, joining the chaos of shifter packs, creating spells with witches, and avoiding deals with the fae.

When she isn't working on her next book, she’s reading, binge-watching TV, or disappearing into her own world during nature walks (probably on the lookout for magical beings—or maybe not).

I want to love this series so much but it's extremely repetitive. I had this problem with the 1st book but towards the end it got better. This book is the same. I understand when books briefly go over what happened in the 1st but every single time "The Cleanse" is mentioned it goes into detail about what happened and who suffered. Every. Single. Time. I'm not sure if it was to fill up space but I found myself skimming a lot. Also, there would be times when Gareth and Levy would be mid conversation, Gareth would ask a question then the dialogue would stop and the inner dialogue would breeze over and summarize what happened. Just found it weird that the conversation would end without really an end to the conversation.
I'm not a writer nor am I a critic, I just want to love this book and it has so much potential if it would stop explaining stuff that was already explained once already.

I need to digest this one. Its action-packed. What's bothering me is the romance or lack of one. I feel Garath our shifter is using our lead. Maybe not, but I just can't figure out the romance and in this one it took away from the story. Their not together. Clearly they are attracted or she is I just don't know.

As for overall ARC we continue with the bad guy wanting to cleanse the world off magic and be the superior being/race. Haven't figured it out. I'm as lost as our heroine on what's going on and more players come into play. It's a good ARC. Our heroine learns a bit more magic and what she wanted to avoid comes to pass. A few surprises and a cliffhanger ending. What will happen?

The novel did become repetitive in repeating what "The Cleans" is and our heroine was constantly whining about being a Legacy, being in danger, etc...

Audio: The narration is well done and I enjoy our narration and her voices for the characters.

The first half of this book commanded my attention and mirrored it’s predecessor with witty humor, an intriguing storyline, and strong chemistry between characters, however the second half fell flat becoming repetitious in dialogue and quickly resolving conflicts presented in the first half as the primary struggles... It lacked fluidity in the storyline becoming choppy leaving me disinterested in the outcome... A bit of a let down from the first book... 3 Stars:)

The first book was fun.

This book left me frustrated.

First, it needs an editor. There were quite a few typos that made it through.

Second, it’s painfully repetitive. I swear if I hear about the Cleanse again, I will throw my kindle across the room. We don’t need to hear the same history fifty times in a book. We get it.

And Levy’s wildly varying opinions are giving me whiplash. One moment she’s ready to jump his bones, and two seconds later ‘she doesn’t trust him’ and tries to fight him. The same thing happens frequently with Connor.

In every single encounter with Connor, he claims that he’s chosen her as his ‘warrior consort’, and two seconds later, they’re fighting, only for him to let her go without explanation. Not to mention the thousand time he says, “If you’re not with me, you’re against me.”

I had serious deja vu because all of the conversations were repeated multiple times throughout the book.

So overall, the series had promise, but I’m not thrilled with the execution. I’m still going to read the next book to find out what happens.

3.5 stars. Looked forward to this book, but the constant whining about being a Legacy, being in danger, blah, blah got repetitive. I felt the story dragged and circled around for a lot of the book. I will see this through to the end though.

Obsidian Magic is another spellbinding book by McKenzie Hunter. Filled with adventure, magic, and violent battles, it keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

Levy’s character development progresses nicely as she finally begins embracing her magical ability, though she remains terrified of being discovered as a Legacy. We get to delve deeper into side characters such as her fae boss Kalen, her lively roommate Savannah, and the mysterious vampire Lucas, which adds layers of interest to the narrative.

I can’t help but be drawn to Lucas, despite his dangerous aura and ownership of the aptly named club, Devour (yes, you can figure out what goes down here). He displays a charmingly old-fashioned elegance with his handwritten letters, flowers, and gifts which I’m here for.

The romantic tension between Gareth and Levy, which had me hooked in the first book, continues to simmer. However, the excruciating slow-burn romance may test the patience of some readers, as Levy's hesitance and Gareth's overconfidence constantly stop them from progressing.

Gareth’s fluctuating attitude, going from hot to cold in moments, adds a layer of frustration but keeps things interesting. Though I find myself tired of his constantly calling her different names depending on his mood (from Levy to Anya and, when he’s particularly arrogant and cold, Ms. Michaels.)

Though the book is action-packed, the repeated explanations regarding the Cleanse and other background elements are unnecessary and redundant. Gareth, as the alpha male leader of the Supernatural Guild, teeters on the brink of annoying with his arrogance, but this does add to the complex dynamics at play.

Overall, Obsidian Magic delivers a gripping story with richly developed characters. It’s a high-octane ride through a fantastical world that promises great things for the next installment.

it was ok.... a bit too racey and more swearing than I like. Also the protagonist keeps going in circles trying to fight someone stronger than her often on her own then being worried about killing him even though he's fully persuaded he wants to wipe out huge parts of the earth's population and force her to marry him...

Also male lead is too domineering for me to want him to end up with the girl, I get it fits his character well and is realistic, but I cringe seeing how he never gives in and thinking this is a recipe for an abusive relationship... he doesn’t even respect protagonist’s rejection of his amorous advances... half the scenes read like sexual harassment/assault to me.

Renegade Magic (Legacy, #3) by McKenzie Hunter The story continues...and ends with another cliffhanger and no real resolution. Again, glad the next book is ready to be listened to. The saga of Levy continues. This book is spent battling her nemesis. There's some good action, an almost close encounter with the RML, Gareth, and some revelations about Levy's best friend, Savannah. The plot thickens. Definitely not a standalone. Start at the beginning.

Interesting but jarring pacing

The plot and the characters are interesting but the pacing is jarring. It skips along from fight to fight without much substance inbetween to hold it together.

The second book in the series takes off where the first one ended. Gareth knows too much, and Levy is feeling something for him, but she's also not really sure what is going on with him. And she kind of wants to keep her distance till she can figure it out. But when she realizes things are getting worse, and legacy is out there trying to destroy the supernaturals, and Gareth is trying to help Levy.

This book wasn't as good as the first one. I was a little frustrated with how this book was similar to the first one, and I was annoyed with some of the stuff going on. However, I really like the growing connection between Gareth and Levy, and I hope it continues. I'm looking for more now.

I’m not exactly sure what just happened. It’s as if the author’s writing style changed or the delivery that changed? There are definitely tell tale signs it’s the same author, or the source material from book 1 was used because as other reviewers have said, some of the themes got repetitive. Also, we continue to learn that Levy is an unreliable narrator as we keep learning of new things, things her parents didn’t share with her, so we are learning about them as Levy does which makes us question what it is Levy is holding onto so tightly or whether her perception is real or what she was fed by her parents in an effort to keep her safe.

The cleanse, Levy drooling over Lucas and Gareth, Gareth reminding Levy he can tell when she’s lying or heart rate picks are all very repetitive. What was more problematic was the repetition with letting the bad guys off. Look, I’m all for trying to spread peace, but we’re talking about zealots trying to kill people/beings for power, why are you trying to talk reason with them when they’d kill you in a heartbeat if you don’t comply - kill those assholes. Screw the pacifist stance at this point, especially with, what was it, like the 4th or 5th time seeing Conner and you’re still trying to convince him? It was maddening!

Also, please explain to me why Levy and Gareth even like each other. I’m seeing very little evidence of it until the author writes them as making out, then Levy always stops it and they rarely talk about it more than a comment here or there about seeing Gareth naked, or hearing about her looking at his lips. She doesn’t seem to give two shits about him ultimately otherwise. Gareth calls Levy Ms Mitchell most of the time, and I simply am not feeling that much warmth between them. I mean, Levy just goes home after the kerfuffle at the vamp bar and he had been in a fight with his nephew due to the chaos mages. I need Levy to exude a bit more outward appearance of actually liking Gareth at all if you want me to believe this couple. Seriously, these two people are sworn enemies. If you’re going to introduce this forbidden romance to the storyline, show me these characters interacting in a softer way or more intimate way than what we got. Instead we get a scene where Gareth spills the beans that he worked for the same group who killed her parents and have been tracking her for her entire life, we get some hand to hand combat, and what? WHY does she want to jump his bones still??? Why does HE like HER? Show me why! Have them exchange words that show us getting to know each other by communicating directly, NOT by these short, mostly hostile interactions. You’re telling me her magic can affect shifters, even control him and we have very few interactions with them talking about this. There was one scene at Devour and toward the end where we see them out in a social setting, but those either lasted all of about 2 paragraphs, or we go from them at the bar to fade to the next day where we heard Gareth dropped her off. We simply are not being shown the how and why these two who should theoretically be enemies, fall for one another.

Also, what is with every person around Levy is essentially a unicorn? The Legacy are thought to be extinct, yet here’s Levy. Then Gareth is a cave lion and supposedly rare/extinct, and what do you know, Savannah also is some sort of rare supernatural or supernatural adjacent being, shocker! 🙄 Come on. Which brings me to the way Kalen reacts to finding out Levy is a Legacy and Kalen eventually offering to teach Levy some magic. I thought, oh this is great we’ll learn more about the magic Levy possesses, and see her learn how to wield it, but then BAM we have a confrontation with Conner. Wait, what? This is where things really started going off the rails at around 65%, we just started going from one scene to the next to the next with not a lot of explanation or understanding of how or why.

I know I had other thoughts but I lost some of my review and I’ve started the third book which is reminding me of things I wanted to say in this book.

Book 2 of the Legacy series picks up right after the first book. This isn't a stand alone book, but the past events are in such detail that you could get away with starting here. For new comers that's good... but for those of us who read the first book then it's annoying. I'd estimate that about 25% of the book was used to describe The Cleanse and it's aftermath. Another 10% percent of the book was about other things that happened in the first book... so it rounds out to about 60% - 65% of this book being new material.

Again, if you didn't read or it's been awhile since you read Book One then you will most likely the reminders. Me... not so much 😑

This story puts Levy up against other Legacy. This is where the story really could have gotten it's emotional depth. Levy should have been devasted and emotionally torn up about finally meeting other Legacy but on opposite sides. She is about to try to do the exact things that she and her family ran from in the past. But the pull doesn't come. Yes, the author mentions that she is sad about it but it than pain/frustration didn't transfer well.

Levy has to track and possible fight the self appointed Leader of the Legacy. These Legacy have been training and using their magic since birth, so thethe likelyhood of Levy (Who only knows a few spells) besting them is slim to none. Yet, guess what happens most of the book...

This Garret thing has me 50/50. I understand that the author is trying to give us some sexual tension and build up their angst. But, it's actually more like good flirting but no chemistry. I do hope they get together but the build up to their relationship just didn't WOW me.

I do like that Garrett is fresh and flirty. I guess the author could have had him playing the tough guy or made them hate each other. But tgats been done so much. I am glad it is something slightly different.

The narrator for this audio book was Stacy Lemboski. She has distinguishable characters and reads the story in the appropriate tones and emotion.

My star rating:

2 Stars ⭐⭐= Decent. Has Potential. Possibly a good idea for a story but something could have been better. Sometimes it's because the author put too little or too much into the wrong parts of the story. New authors sometimes fall in this ranking and move up as their series progresses. Doesn't mean I hated it. Just means it was missing something to push it over the hump.

Still a Good Read but Fell Short of Awesome

The second book in the series was still good but fell slightly in my eyes. This one was still full of action and Levy trying her best to stop the coming of the second cleanse. Her character is on display, particularly her distaste for ending life which I can really appreciate. Kalen and their work take a back seat to her desire to help so I'm so disappointed that there hasn't been more there. I'd like to have seen him more or at least gotten a glimpse into how his magic works but not to be at least in this one.

Levy gets her butt handed to her when she comes up against Conner again and again though she's intelligent enough to realize she needs to learn more spells and about her magic in general to be more effective and jumps on doing so. Conner and his desire to make her good consort aside, it's crazy to me how he doesn't give up on Levy earlier than he did. Not to mention that she finally defeats him in the end which just doesn't gel with how much more powerful he is.

Some of the details and information were skimmed over at times or left out which made me wonder what the heck happened. This was the case with the plan to seal the Legacy and Conner in. Supernaturals had a plan and Levy and crew were successful but I'm not sure how she did it or what she did with the tornado or how she was capable of doing so with twelve times more power than hers against the other Legacy members on Conner's side.

Savannah and Lucas are interesting though the fact that Lucas switched his interest from Levy in this book didn't seem quite right, but there's no explanation offered. Gareth and his secrets cause rifts between him and Levy that go from scorching hot anger to calm discussion all within a matter of minutes which I didn't find to be realistic. The hot and cold Levy displays is frustrating as well in her dealings with Gareth. For a woman who does casual, it certainly doesn't seem that way.

entertaining

Rating: 3.5⭐️

“He once made the comment that behind every good fighter was a tragic past.”

“The turgid muscles of his arm contracted and then relaxed.”

Those two sentences embody the best and worst examples of the writing found in this book and series. That sort of whiplash of concise emotional expression versus one of excessive florid language is mirrored by the characters in their respective relationships and their own personal actions. Towards each other and in moments of conflict.

Levy, the main character has lovely scenes with her friends, antiques dealer Kalen and roommate Savannah, that ring true. She’s a more believable person in her trust issues, snarky humor, and energy than when dealing with the “romantic tension “ of Gareth, or the “villainous ways” of Connor. Both of them, their scenes with Levy, have the same oddly similar toxicity and certain aspects of narcissistic behavior.

The secondary characters, once again, have the most interesting and fascinating roles that draw a reader’s attention. Blu, the witch , Lucas the Vampire Master, and the other two characters that are both great, Kalen and Savannah.

I’m enjoying the journey and series enough to see it through but not really emotionally invested in the characters. It makes it easy to stop the series, read another book, and then pick it up again. Something I wouldn’t do if I’m throughly focused and engaged with the characters and universe.

Much like I am with other similar stories such as the Kate Daniels series/universe by Ilona Andrews for example.

So for readers who enjoy urban fantasy and complete series I think this is a good read and fun series. That’s my take.

My Thoughts:
This book has no beginning and no end. The story started with Double-Sided Magic and ended in a whooping big cliffhanger. So anyone reading this book on it's own, I imagine the reader to get royally confused. If not pissed off, too. Because the entire book is just a middle chapter of a bigger book. I am so not a fan of that kind of book. At all! And also, not really sure how the title relates to the story... Which is a pity because I really like the way this author tells a story. Her author's voice is easy to sink into. I also like th premise of the story, even though it is not very original. I wanted this book (this series) to work... On the bright side, the cover art kick-ass!! It is one of the things that made me buy this book to begin with. Additionally, I still like the way Stacey Glemboski reads. Kudos to the narrator!

Empirical Evaluation:

Awww Levy and Gareth want to be Kate and Curran so badly ....
Gareth pulls it off mostly but come on Levy not in the same league.
The baffling thing about this series is that why is Levy on such a power trip.
The next few impressions are all from book 1 so if you haven’t read book 1 it will have spoilers for you
I mean she has been hiding all her life ( book 1 ) isn’t magically trained ( except for defence ) works with a pair of sai’s ( which were taught by her parent until she was 15 and they were killed by trackers ) did she continue her training? Was she so good at 15 that she considers herself better than trained Guild agents?
I mean there is all this badassery but it has no foundation in fact or even a backstory to make me invest in her
Then comes her friend who is so vegan ocd and uptight and then she has a fascination for vampires then considers herself a witch it’s all sorts of nonsense
It’s like the author hasn’t decided what she wants the characters to be,
Levy is a heroine who has no gravity even her parents deaths are just glossed over
She challenges people who are way above her in authority and training and then gets away with it not through something she does but because the authors glosses over the situation
There are multiple instances of Levy calling people stubborn or arrogant but she is doing the same thing ....
also her chemistry for me isn’t there

It’s like a movie where all the other actors are playing the right parts but the female and her wingwoman are giving wooden performances

3.5 everyone has a secret to hide stars!!
This book really kept my attention the whole time, and I was so invested I didn’t even notice how much time was going by as I was reading. Levy is very unsure in this book on who she can trust and I really don’t blame her. Everyone in this book seems to want to use her as a pawn. Levy is one tough cookie she keeps fighting and never backs down. I enjoy how sassy she is, yet she seems to be very forgiving. She never actually wants to kill anyone, even the people that are out to get her. Everyone should have a chance to redeem themselves.

I really like how this series is starting to evolve into something more, there are bad guys, and good guys, and bad good guys. You learn more and more about the magic system and different levels of class systems among each supernatural. Something about this story and the authors writing just seems to suck you in. I did download book three right away when finishing book two.

“A Legacy, a vampire, and a shapeshifter sat in a living room–that sounded like the beginning of a lame joke. Not the beginning of a tale where they are locked in with a petite blonde getting their collective asses handed to them. Gareth still seemed to be in the thrall of the shock of being dressed down by someone who wasn’t his superior. Lucas seemed to experiencing the same confusion.”

While I'll freely admit that I am enjoying the Legacy series, I must say that I am disappointed with "Obsidian Magic." This installment was a big tease and did nothing to move the plot along. As a matter of fact, this book is simply the spiraling over and over again of two scenes 1. Livy looking for and confronting Connor ( at least three times) and 2. Livy and Gareth having near misses in moving forward with their attraction towards one another ( at least four times). I found myself looking at the percentage read on my Kindle to see if I was somehow rereading a previous section.

There is so much that the author could have addressed that was left hanging:
- Why hasn't Livy told Gareth that Connor wants her to be his baby's momma?
-What does Gareth's mother think of his attraction to Livy?
-What's up with Kalen and Blu?
Unfortunately, she keeps spiraling those same two scenes like we didn't get it the first or second time! Sorry Ms. Hunter but stop stalling and trying to extend the series into more books than needed. Just tell the story and move the plot forward before we lose interest.

Levy is shocked when Gareth tells her that he knows her secret. She doesn't know what he'll do with the information. The decision to reveal herself as Legacy is suddenly not an issue. It seems someone like her is causing chaos in the supernatural community and she has to spill the beans about being a Legacy if she wants to help.

Levy has to stop Conner from causing another Cleanse, the slaughter of supernaturals. No matter how obsessed Conner is with her, Levy refuses to join his side. Levy will have to work with Gareth if she wants to prove her innocence and bring Conner down. When it's all said and done, where will that leave her and Gareth.

OBSIDIAN MAGIC is even better than the first book, DOUBLE-SIDED MAGIC. Levy really comes into her own and we see her character start to grow and gain confidence. Her relationship with Gareth is still unsure, but it's definitely a nice little side note to the story. Apparently every book in author McKenzie Hunter's LEGACY series is going to end in a cliffhanger. The suspense is killing me.

Really enjoyed the first book, but this one has some problems. It's been mentioned before but it's highly repetitive we rebuild the world that we just built in book one. We circle the drain over and over about being a legacy and what that means and how they destroyed the world and how the FMC might be dangerous.
We keep adding in rare thought to be extinct breeds of magic beings because the author failed to plan ahead I think.
But my biggest problem is there's only so many times that you can call hate groups that were set up to look like the Nazis and the KKK and Who are planning to commit mass genocide and refer to those groups as misguided and trying to talk them into reason before it's just ridiculous. At one point she almost has the leader of one such hate group, who's believed this all since birth convinced he's wrong with one conversation. Every time she goes up to fight one of these guys she goes on and on in her head about how if she could just get them to see reason. And refers to these hate groups as "just misguided" over and over. If felt gross.

I found this book very long-winded as the same stuff was rolled out from the first book. The fights were exciting at first but then they were just repeated endlessly with repeated stabbings and magic spells, but no-one dies. The attraction ramps up between Levy and Gareth but that goes nowhere either. Every scene with them is either an argument or a kiss which fades to nothing. Levy wants him then she doesn't. Gareth smirks a lot, then looks smug which is also repeated page after page. Not going to continue with this series. This story could have been condensed into two books and been the better for it.

The difference between the characters in this book and one written by Ilona Andrews is that the first group of people are pretty senseless and incompetent. Also, Ilona Andrews makes its believable that the protagonists could defeat the antagonists.

Also, OBVIOUSLY, Levy finding the necrospears after Connor went missing and the veil being weakened was a trap. Anyone could have seen that coming. And also, what’s the point of having Gareth there when he’s completely useless against legacy and vertu magic? At least make our ML somewhat useful.

The flaw with this series is that the author went way over her head with an overly powerful antagonist and forgot to level the playing field as far as anyone other than the female lead. At least make the fights believable and give the female lead some sense. If not for her overly played book armor, she would have died 10x over. I mean, walking into the legacy & virtu’s base, which had 12 legacies and virtus, by herself? Did she actually think she could win? That was so ridiculous, I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes. She would have died if not for the book armor. So, in fact, her plan was to walk in there and become a martyr and with her, the world’s only chance of avoiding the cleanse— because, of course, no one else is even remotely capable of going against Connor, least of all, our male lead.

Also, this got soooo repetitive. The following is a summary of 70% of the book:

Levy confronts Connor. Connor says you’re my chosen consort, align with me. Levy attempts to convince Connor to abandon his plot. Both sides take turns saying the same thing over and over. Finally, Levy attempts to fight Connor with 0 chance of winning and fails. Connor decides to let Levy live for another day. Gareth, useless.

Bam. Saved yall 5 hours.
