This book is a mix between The Darkest Mind and the Shatter Me series! Teens with powers wanting freedom from the one who took it from them.
I am giving this book 3 stars! I love the concept and the characters are great! The reason I am not giving it 4 or even 5 stars is because I thought that the story could have had more depth and everything ended so quickly. I have so many questions about the book. I honestly think there could be another book because I want to know what is going happen to everyone and how will they deal with their powers in the real-world.
The writing is simple but plot timing is off. In one chapter, it states it have been 12 hours since the last part but then when they walk not even a few miles to the place they are staying it then state it have been days. This happens a few times in the book but it is just a mistake missed in the proofreading of the book. It doesn’t affect the way you read it story.
I love the lessons this book conveys which is “never give up and never let someone change who you are”. One of my favorite parts in the book is when the main character won’t let someone change who she is. She stays true to herself.
Overall, this is a good book and I enjoyed reading it. I am hoping that there will be another book in the series. It is perfect if you are in a reading slump or just want a quick read. Check it out!

Okay, let me get the bad news out of the way first: there are a few typos, a couple of predictable parts (but they are so well written that they aren't irritating), the characters spend a hell of a lot of time planning or going over their plans (which tended to draw things out a bit), also the sense of time is a little odd in this story, there's also a really confusing part where a character who was kidnapped showed up before they were rescued (I'm assuming that during editing that part was somewhere else or there was another scene that put it into context that got deleted in an earlier draft, either way it didn't bother me because it's actually a really cool part). The characters are supposed to be 19-20ish but they sound and act younger but I chalked that up to the fact that because they were all kidnapped and held in isolation as teen they haven't had the opportunity to really mature yet (so that also didn't bother me). And Blair mentions more than once how they are misfits....I only needed to hear her say it once. Also I felt the book ended too soon. I easily overlooked all of these discrepancies for eight very good reasons:
1) This story is extremely well written, (despite it's little hiccups in the plot line) and the action scenes are intense AF (I literally thought I was going to give myself a heart attack my heart was racing so badly and at one point I was so scared to read on but I just HAD to know what happened, also I burst into tears twice during my reading of this book, I was so on the edge of my seat with those moments).
2) There are seven main characters and each of them KICK ASS! I'm a very character intense reader, I like them complex, and I like them kick-ass, and Amelia delivered that in spades for me with Blair, Nina, Thalia, Vivien, Keegan, Aaron and Ryder. I was cheering them on for the entire book, and there was never a single second where they let me down (as some characters have in the past). They are each very individual and stand alone characters and yet the relationship they have and the love and respect they have for each other is blatantly evident. They are family to each other and even though Blair is the "leader" she gets her strength and courage from each of them as they do with her, and that was so beautiful to see. The others aren't just filling out the role of sidekicks, they are filling out the roles of being equal to Blair, and to me that's really empowering. So yes, I love this book, imperfections and all, and I will be re-reading it and highly recommending it to anyone who loves YA novels with intense feels and kick-ass characters. There were also some really great quotes in this book. I'm also really looking forward to seeing how Amelia grows as a writer (Imperium is her debut novel). If she releases any more books I'm definitely going to read them.
