Debut sensation Christian O’Connell is back with more hilarious adventures of Spike, super-star radio DJ… and trouble-prone ordinary kid.
The World’s youngest DJ is still the talk of the town. A town that’s about to turn against him.
Radio Boy and his team, Artie and Holly, are back and continue to broadcast live to the world from Spike’s garden shed.
Then, following a shock split from Nan, Grandad Ray comes to stay. Spike decides to cheer him up by inviting him onto the show. He becomes an instant hit with the listeners and Spike keeps him on as a new team member.
But things get really awkward when Spike realises Grandad Ray only has three stories and keeps telling them over and over again. Spike is forced to sack his own Grandad, who swears vengeance on his own grandson. Grandad Ray is the world's most competitive man and he always plays to win – at any cost…
Christian O’Connell is a multi-award winning broadcaster who hosts commercial radio’s biggest breakfast show, on Absolute Radio. He is also a touring stand up comedian with several sold out National tours and three critically acclaimed Edinburgh Festival shows. He has presented TV shows on Sky1, ITV and C5.
Bit of a rocky start, with too many plot lines (Grandad Ray, Artie's cat, Spike's dad's band) but it all becomes clear about halfway through. Most of the characters from the first book return and I was pleased to see some good character development, especially for Army Cadet Holly who I had a soft spot for in book one. There are some good jokes in here, and lots of music references for parents/adult readers too.
This was a charming and enjoyable read - Radio Boy is back with his Secret Shed Show production and learns some good life lessons about the simplest of choices we make and their consequences. His internal conflicts and general pondering are well-considered, full of comedy and imagery, and further brought to life in comic-style drawings throughout. Never too old for a lighthearted kid’s book...
We catch back up with Spike, Artie, Holly and the additional member of their team at least for a while, granddad.
As his nan has thrown his granddad out, he finds himself having his life taken over by him as he gets his bed and joins their radio show. But if course, his granddad is crazy and tries to be trendy in an old fashioned way singing Elvis songs whilst having his hair styled a crazy way.
In this book we see Spike enter into a radio competition to take over his idol's radio show for a week whilst he goes away on holiday.
However, of course we see the horrid head teacher also enter whilst there's instances in the book of pet napping, revenge and drama with farm animals!
This series won't ever disappoint I'm sure as the antics get upped from the last book as Spike seats his sights on his major future career he dreams of, we can all appreciate a good dream about our ideal career after all! I enjoyed the competitive nature of the characters and the granddad was a real display of an embarrassing yet proud grandparent. The plot was well thought out and I read it in one sitting absolutely hooked.
I have rated this higher than the first book, and in some ways I do think it is better than the first. Spike Hughes once again is incredibly flawed but utterly oblivious to it. He is a little selfish but he is also funny and talented and a good friend. I think his flaws make him a great character because his flaws end up in him making unwise and wise decisions, which is refreshing to me as the reader. Lots of funny scenes, lots of booing of Grandpa Ray who is a jaded bitter unapologetic selfish old man stealing the limelight, lots of character development and great writing.
I really do love this series. Another action packed book that had me laughing out loud. I love the way simple life lessons are included among all of the amazing adventure.
