Fuelled by wanderlust and the odd cake, Karen likes nothing better than donning boots and rucksack, seeking out the back roads and enjoying the freedom to go wherever her feet can. She currently lives on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus where she spends her time nurturing geckos, trying not to gorge on too much fried halloumi and writing her books from a tiny balcony overlooking the sea.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Nathaniel, why are you reading a cookbook?
1: this is not a cookbook
2: I was very bored
3: this is one of the most fascinating things I have read in a while.
This book is a bunch of experiences and ideas from the author about Greek food and what it can do for you. It has stories, like five recipes, and a lot of interesting insight. Because I love learning new things, I thought it would be fun to learn about food. This was great and easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they might find it interesting.

I will admit to liking the Mediterranean lifestyle and so when I saw this book I just had to download it. I was expecting a recipe book, but this is so much more.

The author, Karen Guttridge takes her readers on a voyage of discovery as she meets the locals, watches, and then helps them forage for food, grown locally, and a lot of the time wild on the nearby hillsides. It reminded me of walks with my grandfather in the UK when I learnt so much about nature, and it is wonderful to hear about the local people in Greece, still carrying on traditions passed through the generations, and taking advantage of local produce in season.

The Mediterranean diet is renowned worldwide as healthy, rich in vitamins, minerals and goodness. Although, as the author states, this is not a recipe book, there are plenty of tips and recipes in it, all written in such a way that it is easy to see how they can be incorporated into anyone’s diet. At the end of the book there is an excellent section called ‘One Mediterranean Month – 30 tips for healthy living’ which contains suggestions on how to change your diet one day at a time.

The author takes her reader inside her friends and neighbours kitchens with her, and we watch through her eyes, fly on the wall like, how they prepare and cook their food in the traditional ways. We discover not only how to embrace a simple, tasty, yet oh so good for you diet, but also that yes they do use copious amounts of olive oil and lemons, and that for some recipes, like coffee, there is really only one way to make it in Greece.

Extremely interesting and thoroughly entertaining, I would highly recommend ‘Eat Like A Greek’ to anyone interested in the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle.

A great book but... why did it end so quickly?

Undoubtedly worth reading. Not a cookbook, although it contains a few delicious recipes. Full of tips on the mediterranean diet and healthy lifestyle in general. Advices on what, when and how to eat. Simply written, easy to read.

I am a HUGE fan of greek salads, olive oil, feta cheese, fresh veggies and fresh herbs like basil or oregano. I‘m sure I‘ll be coming back to this book very often.

Not what I hoped it was...

I love Greek food, and I was hoping this was a cookbook. Instead, it reads like a blog. A really long back story, blah, blah, blah... make a salad, but not just any salad! "The most colorful salad you can muster." Sooo, I started skimming for actual recipes. There are, maybe, 5 recipes in this entire book, and they are not that good. One recipe? "500 green beans, 1 onion" and I stopped reading. No thanks.

Healthy

Because of content.
There is nothing I disliked , liked the simplicity of explanations of the meals , drinks and foraging .
As I love cooking Mediterranean meals , Greek, Turkish , Spanish . recommend to my friends to make them aware how awesome food can be and to eat local foods abroad , instead of boring British food .

Eat Like a Greek

I absolutely loved this book! It’s a quick read but will remain in my collection. I do believe it conveys some of the healthiest habits to make eating a pleasure and be able to form very healthy habits without deep thought.

I will recommend this to all my friends, from the casual diner to my food geeks.

Enjoyable

Reminded me of growing up on a Sicilian diet...slim. healthy, and happy. I plan to go back to my great grandparents and grandparents way of eating. I am sick and tired of the SAD diet. My doctor recommends the Mediterranean diet.

Greek Info

This book wasn't what I expected it to be but the information contained within was very helpful in learning more about Greek ways and traditions as well as terminology.

Nice little travelogue style book. Very short but if you know the basics of the Mediterranean diet, this compliments it nicely.
