Lisa Blackwood is the USA Today bestselling author of the Gargoyle and Sorceress Urban Fantasy series. She and her new co-author, S.M. Schmitz, are also embarking upon a new Space Opera Romance series. Book one is titled, Vengeance: Warships of the Spire. It can be found in the Dominion Rising boxset anthology.
As well as writing, Lisa is also an avid gardener, horse enthusiast, and dog lover. She grudgingly lives in a small town in Southern Ontario, though she would much rather live deep in a dark forest, surrounded by majestic old-growth trees. Since she cannot live her fantasy, she decided to write fantasy instead. Freya, her ever faithful and beloved hellhound, ensures Lisa takes breaks from the computer so they can rid the garden of cats with delusions of conquest.

Synopsis:
Sorceress Awakening
Lillian felt comforted by the gargoyle in her Gran’s maze since she was a little girl. She never guessed that he was more than just a stone statue. Then, dark creatures attack her, and Gregory awakens to defend her. That the gargoyle is her protector is only the first of many shocks. The second is that she isn’t human. She’s a dryad, a fae creature tied to a tree that stands next to Gregory’s pedestal. Gran is a leader of a witch’s coven allied to other fae creatures at war with the demonic Riven. As if that were not enough of a shock, Lillian and Gregory are Avatars to the gods, with Gregory being her protector for many lifetimes.
The Lady of Battles, and evil demigoddess, is seeking to use their power in a magic war against the Lord of Death. To this end, she has placed a demon seed in Lillian’s soul. Gregory stole her memories to slow the demon’s growth. She also has a forbidden love for her guardian. All the while, the Lady of Battles plots her next move.
Sorceress Rising
After a fight with the Riven that nearly unleashed the demon seed in Lillian and left Gregory near death, the two Avatars must rest. Gregory reverts to his stone form, while Lillian rests in her hamadryad (her tree). When they awake, the coven informs them the battle with the Riven did not go unnoticed. The human military has moved in to investigate reports of monsters, leaving her family working to avoid exposing their presence. Her hamadryad has transferred her sorceress powers to itself so the tree can neutralize the demon that was growing in her soul. Now, she must master different powers to survive the next battle against the Riven.
As if the Riven and human military weren’t enough of a complication, Tethys, an ancient siren, has risen from the depths. She seeks to tame humanity for what she considers their desecration of the earth.
Sorceress Hunting
With the Tethys and the Riven dealt with, the coven must turn their attention to the humans. The human authorities have locked down the area, realizing they’ve been sharing the world with other intelligent creatures. It isn’t just soldiers. Scientists are directing the hunt. In addition, a minion of the Lady of Battles has broken into their world, seeking to capture Lillian and Gregory. Unlike the coven, he doesn’t care to show restraint with the humans.
Review:
The Gargoyle and Sorceress Tales is a boxed set that includes the first three books of the Gargoyle and Sorceress series by Lisa Blackwood. It follows two ancient beings, reborn to the human world: Gregory the gargoyle and Lillian, a sorceress. After the last cycle of death and rebirth, Lillian was born to Gargoyle and dryad parents under the sway of a demigoddess called the Lady of Battles. This gave the Lady of Battles the opportunity to place a demon seed in Lillian. When Gregory was old enough, he rescued Lillian, erased her memories of her previous lives to protect her, and took her to live in the human realm under the care of Gran and her coven. Lillian grows into a young woman, and when evil creatures called Riven menace her, Gregory awakens from the stone slumber to rescue her.
The story is an urban fantasy. There are many quirky and humorous elements. The first book started slowly and took a while to get into. The interplay between characters is well done, and the story does pick up speed as the trilogy moves on. It’s well worth a read.
“Gargoyle Awakening” is a boxset of Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3 of Ms. Blackwood’s Gargoyle and Sorceress series. I love this series! “Sorceress Awakening” – Is the first book in the series and was so interesting with all the supernatural creatures. Dryad, gargoyle, unicorn, vampires, and it goes on! Lillian comes into her powers after an attack by vampires and wakes up her gargoyle statue who ends up saving her. She and the gargoyle, who she names Gregory, have a very special connection, but you have to read the book to see what it is. This story flowed very smoothly and I finished it in a couple of days. There are a lot of fight scenes in the story and are a bit graphic so just be prepared. “Sorceress Rising” – Is the second book in the series. This series you have to read in order and each book is a new chapter/part of the main characters lives. “Rising” was a great continuation from “Awakening.” I love the imagery that Lisa Blackwood portrays. I feel bad for Lillian that she doesn't have all of her memories, she has no magic, and she's trying to do everything she can to save her family and Gregory. She has to make tough choices (lesser of two evils) and her choice leads to consequences that change her relationship with her gargoyle. I loved the addition of her biological family, especially her younger brother. “Sorceress Hunting” – Is the third book in the series. Each book keeps getting better and better. This book had a lot of action in it and the final battle was so suspenseful. Then the twist at the end? I did not see that coming and was so on edge I bought the next book so I could see what would happen.
I've rarely put a book down because a character is so repulsive to me but I did with this book. Lillian, the protagonist in the Gargoyle and Sorceress series by Lisa Blackwood, is whiny, bitchy, stupid, self-centered, illogical and without an iota of self control or respect for others. In the 34 chapters I've read of Gargoyle Awakening, she hasn't done or said anything that didn't screw the people who care about her.
It's such a pity because the world is unique and the writing is lively enough, hence the 2 stars. Blackwood's description of the gargoyle is a bit inconsistent so you can't really picture him in your mind's eye, unlike the vivid ones in KF Breene's Magical Midlife series. But the story premise would be enough to read the series if I didn't want to kill the "heroine" myself
I can't read more. I need a mental shower. I hope I can forget this character even exists. Blech!
I could not put this book down...well this collection of books. But it just rolled from one to the next if felt like all now great big book to me, which I loved. The story arc has one main theme and then, of course, each book and its own story arch as well. Yet each book would seem to bring you closer or higher in the larger story arc. I never felt lost. I knew exactly where I was. The character development was on point as well. They were well rounded and felt so very real.
The author's writing not only of the storyline and the characters but the environment. Once she combined all three aspects the story truly came to life. I cannot wait to read the next set.
The story takes over after a 12 year gap as the forces of evil attack Lillian causing her power to awaken. Over the course of this 3 book set we learn much about the balance of power & the Avatars. The ending is such a cliffhanger that you want to race out and get ty he next book to find out what happens.
Three good stories to read in order, with a final ending that is not happy or an ending.
Elves, dryads, sprites, werewolves, magical trees, and gargoyles, all in this tale of avatars, demigods, and an alternative dimension, the Magic Realm, which is under attack. And the war is leaking thru to Earth, where those of fae blood are in hiding.
Heart-stopping. Phenomenal. Enchanting. I fell in love with the characters and was completely engrossed in their story. Beautifully written. Sucks the reader into the world without a hitch. I am off to read the next set! Loved it!
Another great find in my long neglected to be read pile. I am so very glad I finally managed to read it. A wonderful three volume set. Such a great series. So very well worth the read. You won't be disappointed.
Wow this is an awesome tale filled with Garogoyles, Fae and God's. I had to read all 3 books non-stop because the story was that good. I highly recommend this series.
A good collection of the "Gargoyle and Sorceress" series. The author will totally pull you into this series with these three books. It's all about magic, and fae and humans, and demigods, and ....
