‘ফোকলোর : পরিচিতি ও পঠন-পাঠন’ গ্রন্থে আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতিসম্পন্ন ফোকলোরবিদ প্রফেসর মযহারুল ইসলাম ফোকলোরবিদ বিভিন্ন ক্ষে্ত্র সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করেছেন।গ্রন্থটি ফোকলোর সম্পাদনার বিজ্ঞানসম্মত রীতি-পদ্ধতি, পাঠ-পর্যালোচনা, বিভিন্ন দেশের লোককাহিনীর পাঠান্তর, ঐতিহাসিক ও ভৌগোলিক পদ্ধতিতে বিশ্লেষণ এবং ভাষাতাত্ত্বিক বিশ্লেষণ ইত্যাদি বিষয়ের আলোচনায় সমৃদ্ধ।‘ফোকলোর : পরিচিতি ও পঠন-পাঠন’ পাশ্চাত্য বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক গবেষণামূলক রীতি অনুসরণ করে লিখিত। এ গ্রন্থে আমাদের লোকসাহিত্যের পঠন-পাঠনে এমন কতগুলো তথ্য, পদ্ধতি, রীতি ও বৈজ্ঞানিক চেতনা পরিবেশন করা হয়েছে-যা এদেশের ফোকরোর গবেষণার ক্ষেত্রে সম্পূর্ণভাবেই নতুন।

This book contains the fundemental elements of folklore. Folklore is an artistic communication in small group. In England 1946, William John Thoms written in 'The Athenaeum' paper first Folklore word and then debate is continued about this name. Folklore word devided by two specific word 'Folk' and 'Lore' . This word mainly came from German word 'Volkskunde' .

Now the question is what is the actual meaning of FOLK?

The term 'folk' can refer to any group of people whatsoever who share at least one common
factor. It does not matter what the linking factor is-it could be a common
occupation, language or religion-but what is important that a group formed for whatever reason
will have some traditions which it calls its own. In theory a group must consist of at least two
persons, but generally most groups consist of many individuals. A member of the group may not
know all other members. But he will probably know the common core of traditions belonging to
the group, traditions which help the group have a sense of group indentity. With this flexible
definition of folk, a group could be as large as a nation, or as smajl aş a family." (Dundes.
Interpreting Folklore: 6-7)

According to Y.M Sokolov "folklore is an echo of the past and at the same time it is the vigorous voice of the present "
on the other hand R.V Williams told that "folklore is like a forest tree with its roots deeply burried in the past but which continuously put forth new branches new leaves new fruits."

Folklore some time called it "The pulse of the people"

In Bangladesh 'Mazharul Islam' was the first person who thought about the significance of folklore study in instiutional stage and in 1998 he founded Folklore department for the first time in Bangladesh at University of Rajshahi. This is the first major attempt which was taken by Mazharul Islam . He gave folklore to a infrastructural appearance in higher stage.

This book is a one of the evidence where he wrote about folklore and gave his perception and interest in this book. This book contains various type of things but major part of the book is 'Introduction of folklore' , ' Meaning of folklore' 'Relation between folklore and others ' and Meta-folklore.

If any person have interest in folklore or culture , They can read this book profoundly. For my personal suggestion except this book book you can read 'Dr Anupam Hera Mandal' and 'Dr Uday Shankar Biswas' book. Both of are living legend in research of folklore. Thuns of book can read both of them....

Conclusion , According to C.F Potter "Folklore is a lively fossils which is refuses to dies"

So you can't deny the excellence and prominence of FOLKLORE
