Welcome to Brawlers Bar…

They said men only get better with age, all distinguished and all that BS, but Archer “Bulletproof” Woods hadn’t gotten better. At fifty-six he was still as much an asshole as he’d been in his twenties and thirties, hell, maybe he was worse. Being a bouncer at a bar called Brawlers suited him just fine and he even tolerated the rest of the crew who’d taken up residence in his house when they’d had nowhere else to go. He was big, growly and homely that kept the parade of men passing through Brawlers at arm’s length for the past decade. One night changed all that.

What he’d thought was happily ever after turned into a nearly five year nightmare. Gregory Charles appeared to have it all, a successful business, sophistication, and a perfect marriage. His friend and best employee, Landon, begged him to come out to a friend’s bar to celebrate Landon’s engagement. What could it hurt? A night without contemplating the hell that would come down on him the moment he served his husband with divorce papers would do him good. That is until he met the brooding older man staring into a whiskey straight ignoring everyone around him.

Watching for trouble was his job and Gregory screamed mistake as soon as the long, lean and handsome man sat down beside him. But he also knew when someone was in over their head and Gregory needed someone to watch his back. That someone was Bull, only time would tell if he’d have to fight Gregory as much as the man after him.

Reread June 2022

It’s been a while since I read a Dabney book so I thought I’d reread some of my favs. Still like this one though I’d probably rate it a little lower. I noticed a lot of typos this time 🤬

Reread November 2018

Still love Bull.

Reread October 2017

I absolutely LOVE Bull. Hot silver fox...yum 😍

I’m sure I’ll reread this one over and over.

Originally read May 2017

I have really enjoyed this series as well as the Twirled crew. They give me the warm fuzzies. I really like how most don't fight being together. And if they do, while they're not officially together, they still spend most of the book "together".

Bull is all kinds of silver fox yummy goodness! He is so good and patient with Gregory. He was everything the poor guy needed even if he was a bit rough around the edges.

Poor Gregory. He definitely didn't deserve what his ex husband did to him. But he was meant for Bull so it all worked out. He fit right in with the crew and became a new papa bear to them all.

I'm looking for to Hunter's story next. It's a yummy ménage. I'm not very good at waiting though but I guess I have to *sigh*

And I'm so freaking excited Dabney is working on a spinoff series with new guys. Yay! Can't wait!

Pure, unadulterated, romantic enjoyment. So much so I’m going to read the whole series.

This author’s style reminds me of Max Voss, a compliment. The writing is real, no holds barred, no fake romantic bs.

I loved it.

Now, if you can’t see your way past some horrendously bad editing, it’s not for you. (Big hint to the author.) But for the constant editing corrections I made in my mind while reading I would have given this a five. Too much like work :(

I’m going to read more about this crazy cast of characters. I don’t want to have to think too much, I just want to relax and feel the fun lovin.

Bingo!

I enjoy this series the way I enjoy cheese puffs or off brand soda. I can't say its good really as it over the top and I have to endure detailed descriptions of various kinds of body hair.

There are always a lot of dark elements in these books but there is also such shining hope of found family and love.

Gregory is in a very bad situation and Bull makes sure he gets out. They live in a house with a lot of crazy characters from the other books in this series and things get spicy and sweet.

So, yeah. Next! Nom, Nom.

There are always emotionial connection here about being a man in your 50's who was gay when there was less possibilities and Greg's cycle of abuse so that lifts these books out of all the crazy a bit.

I love this series so much!
I knew I was going to love Papa Bear, Bull... he tried to be hard and sure, he was when it came to protecting the ones he cared about, but he loved his family... The guys he'd adopted and took in when they'd needed family... That's exactly what he done with Gregory too.

Gregory was Landon's boss and was married to an abusive man. Very abusive and although Landon suspected it, he never had proof....until the one day he did and called Bull in to go with his to check on Gregory... That's when Bull claimed him.
Of course, it wasn't that easy.... There were tons of back and forths, it was a sticky situation since Gregory was married and the psycho husband wouldn't give him a divorce and there's the fact that, bull is 20 years older than Gregory so each one of them had excuses why it wouldn't work out but then in the next breath, they'd say they were claiming each other... So, it took a while, they danced around it for a bit.... But, when they got there, it was incredibly sweet. Gregory was just what Bull needed and Bull was exactly what Gregory needed.

I think the thing about the exes in these stories is that they're all kind of unbelievable.... Like, trying to kill each other and stuff... I mean, maybe because I'm from a small town with a low crime rate... but, how many times can that happen in one group of friends? A crazy stalker, abusive, murderous ex? Does it happen a lot?
And then Thrope is a homophobe, but what does that have to do with anything about catching someone attempting murder? I kind of wish we would've gotten little more closure with the ex. I wanted to know he was suffering....I wanted to know that he got his karmic justice... I need vengeance, I guess. I'm psycho like that.

Overall though, I loved this story... I loved Bull's sweet yet dirty mouth. I loved how he treated Gregory and how Gregory fit right into his life, willingly. It was another awesome addition to an already awesome series. I cannot wait for Hunter!!!
5, well deserved stars from me!

Enjoyed this - seems I've got a soft spot for these characters. I like the fact that they're dysfunctional and surrounded by issues, somehow they pull it off. This was Bull ( Archers ) book - a 50 something silver fox who was protective of his Brawlers family. He figured he'd never find his forever after coming out later in his life. Along comes Gregory - a victim of domestic violence, thinking he would never find peace. After a chance meeting both lives became connected. There was a long build up in this book, but the wait was worth it !

My last book by this author was DNF and returned for a refund, but this one seemed to have almost the right amount of alpha male, love, and drama. I could have done without all the self-referential comments about how other members of the series were so devoted, so loving, so amazing etc... but fans of this would probably appreciate a callback to their favourite characters.

What let this one down for me was the poor editing. There's spelling errors everywhere, awkward comma placement, and 5 times the author used "passed" in place of "past".

Warning: Possible triggers. Physical and mental abuse, severe. Also, attempted murder and stalking.
This book had me laughing so damn hard. Oh my gah. I was so happy this was Bull’s story. I’ve seen how he is with all the guys. As grumpy as he comes off, he really cares about those boys and watches over them all like they’re his kids. He’s kind of adopted them all. But he gets lonely too, and there are stories there for him that the others don’t know, that he fights every day. And I was so happy to see that he finally found someone for himself. And it was one funny ass ride.
At first though, it wasn’t so funny. When Gregory first met all the Brawlers and Twirled crew, it was with his employee Landon and Gregory felt way out of his league in his suit. But when he sat down beside Bull, something drew him to the man. Maybe it was the way he was staring at that shot glass with some pain on his face. It made Gregory want to comfort him. They ended up talking for a bit but Gregory had to go home, because even though his husband was supposed to be gone, it would make trouble for him if his husband found out he was gone. But his husband wasn’t gone and Gregory was in for it when he met his very drunk husband at the door. After Landon tried for a week to get to Gregory, Landon knew drastic measures were going to have to be taken and Bull was it. When they found Gregory, Bull almost killed the husband. They got Gregory out of there and Bull warned the hubby to sign the divorce papers and stay away. But that wasn’t going to happen. He kept constantly hounding Gregory. During all this though, the boys all adopted Gregory as Bull’s man and the second daddy. Lol!! The comments were funny as hell. But they got to know each other as friends. Gregory got to meet Bull’s family and there was an instant connection. But sometimes good things don’t last. Gregory’s ex had stepped up his game and tried to set them all on fire. Bull got everyone out but himself, where he was beaten by the ex with a bat. Thankfully, they got him out in time, but now he’s in the hospital, Psycho is in jail for catching the ex trying to run, and the bigoted, homophobic prick of a sheriff, is well, being a prick. And Gregory is lost and scared, hoping Bull wakes up and makes him his.
I hate abusive pricks. I have to admire Bull for holding back. And I admire Psycho for what he did to Gregory’s ex before he went to jail. It was the least of what that asshole deserved. I was so happy when Landon and Bull got him out of there. I knew when he first walked into that bar that night that something wasn’t quite right and it was obvious it way wrong. I’m just glad they got him out before he was killed. And it broke my heart for Gregory because he’s such a sweetheart. He grew up in a loving home with loving parents. But for some reason, he just couldn’t get out of that relationship with his ex. And I get it. When you’re in an abusive relationship, it is hard to get out. It’s not that they want to stay, but they are guilted into it or threatened. Often told again and again that it will never happen again, so there’s always that small, tiny seed of hope. And most times most don’t make it out alive.
And for Gregory, Bull was the perfect person for him. Bull was scared, yeah. The age difference alone made him nervous. Understandable. But Bull had one time had a drinking problem himself, and though he would never lift a hand to hurt Gregory, he still didn’t want that to associate with something bad for him. Plus with all the boxing and fighting in the ring and such, he didn’t want Gregory to be scared. But what he ended up doing is giving Gregory a safe place, where he finally started to blossom into the man he really was. And it fit right in with the rest of them. He was snarky, sassy and smart mouthed just like the rest of them. He was finally relaxing and learning to have fun. All because Bull was patient with him and gentle and showed him that big men are caring and compassionate too. Even if he was often grumpy lol.
I loved this story. I’m so happy for both of them. This series has just been amazing from the first Twirled book up to now and I’m excited to read the rest.

I want to be "reviewer professional" when it comes to this review but the fangirl in me is trying to bust through. Why? BECAUSE IT'S BULL! I have been waiting for this silver fox daddy for what feels like ages!!! So, when it came time for his turn I was so freaking excited! He is worth the wait.
Through all the books we see him as a "father figure" in a sense. A bit meaner and he always threatens to evict his "sons" but yeah, he's the oldest and he allows them to dwell there. But he loves them. He busts their balls but he'd jump in front of a bullet for anyone of his guys.
When we meet Gregory we know something is seriously wrong. It doesn't take long to find out what- the what will break your heart- and when Landon needs help saving his boss, he goes to Bull. Bull is a fixer and by the end of this book you will adore him and Gregory so much you won't want it to end.
There was a conflict for Bull and Gregory. It came in the form of their age difference. This was their personal issue. And I saw both sides of it but I'm ridiculously unjudgemental and slapped those boys in the back of the head. The sex? Oh, sweet baby Jesus! *fans self* Kinky and all the "OH, DADDY!" Prepare yourselves.

There's also suspense here. And probably one of the most suspenseful books to date. I loved it so much. I was sweating and nervous and on the edge of my seat for it. I can't give anything away but there's justice to be served in this one for sure.

JM Dabney doesn't write stories about super models and six pack guys. These are raw, gritty, real people. They have scars, and bellies, they have age and emotional issues. They all have an ugly story that has made them who they are. But with each passing book JM gives each heathen their prince and a happily ever after!

LOVED IT!

I love this series! This is a spinoff to the “Twirled World” series, and Bull is another bouncer at the bar, “Brawlers”. While you could read this as a standalone, you’ll be missing A LOT! There are so many crazy characters in these series that you’ll miss some of the nuances if you haven’t been following along.

Bull is the “Papa Bear” of the Brawler’s crew. He’s 50-something and divorced with an adult child in the Marines. While he’d love to find someone like all the other “boys” in his house, he’s sort of given up hope.

Gregory is still married – FYI, he’s separated the entire story and they do get divorced – to an abusive asshole. He’s not even looking to date, and older, bear, leather wearing, bikers-types wouldn’t appeal anyway. So… imagine his surprise when Bull ends up rescuing him one day and moving him in to his house!

Just as with the others in this series, this is a hurt/comfort extravaganza, with both Bull and Gregory healing in one another’s arms. The boys from Twirled and the Brawler’s crew are there – being hysterical! – and we get an inside peek into Psycho and Ben’s new household – woot!

Highly recommended for fans of the series/author, and cautiously recommended as a standalone.

(I think the editing just keeps getting better and better!)

This is my favorite of this series to date including the Twirled books. I've become so invested in this group of friends that have become a chosen family. I want to be a part of it dammit lol. Bull is perfection. I wasn't totally sure about Gregory in the beginning but he is exactly what Bull needed. I love how we always get to catch up with the Twirled crew and Brawlers crew in each book. Now I will sit not so patiently waiting for Hunter's book. JM Dabney has quickly become one of my go to authors with these two series.

3,5 *

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.
My old 3* is now a 3,5* and clicked with a 4*):

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth King,
'Save the kids' series from EM Leya or
'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like
an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times (most romances where you can enjoy
for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, but
not really an often reread book

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok) It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

This one was a big improvement from the first 2 of the series, I still think that Twirled world Ink was better, whether that's personal preference or the writing has negatively changed, I don't know, but I'm pretty certain once I've finished this series I'm going to immediately go back and read the books from that original series.

There was a lot more tension and build up to the MC's becoming a couple that there wasn't as much of in the other books, at least as far as I noticed. The romance felt meaningful and solid like there was no doubt their relationship would last, but I did miss the exaggerated affection, there was kisses and touches here and there but not very many casual cuddles and lap sitting which are my favourite. They had a good rapport between them at times and there was a few funny moments that I laughed out loud.

I liked that they both have detailed back stories that made the story feel well rounded but I did think it was slightly unoriginal, nothing I hadn't read before (mc 1 saves other mc 2 from abusive marriage, mc 1 is an alcoholic, mc 1 was married to high school sweetheart for years and years before admitting he was gay). Nothing particularly wrong with any of these, I just always wish that authors would delve into their imagination more and fish out something completely new.

I didn't notice bad editing in the first two books (at least as bad as in the original series) but in this one they came back again, this book was full of obvious errors like missing or wrong words in sentences.

Safety.
•no cheating, no OP, no disloyalty.
•I think I'm correct in saying both hadn't had sex in years, can't remember exactly though.
•Bull was previously married with a grown son, he's pretty much best friends with his ex-wife(long distance), no hard feelings between them at all.
•Gregory was married to abusive man, he was beaten and locked in cupboard. They were still married throughout this entire book because the OM wouldn't sign the divorce papers.
•age gap - 20ish(?) years, Bulls son was older than Gregory and Gregory's dad was younger than Bull.
•Bull was a recovered alcoholic

Sexy and eventful!

The third book and it just keeps getting better.

Bull has lived for others for years, when he finally decides to live for himself he ends up with a house full of misfits. But they are his family. Everyone needs someone to depend on and Bull is always there no matter what happens.
Gregory is in need of some TLC and Bull is just the man for the job. Love, protection, and safety are right there in the arms of a man who looks like muscle for a biker gang.

My favorite character has to be Bull, he is not nice, doesn't make you think of a fluffy loving man. Yet when you are one of his family, he is all that and more. Gregory is the perfect balance four him. Innocent yet just as strong willed as the Bull himself.

I would strongly recommend reading this series in order, however you can read it as a stand alone.

From that review: " Bull's story is the one I've been waiting for.  I've love the huge, hulking father figure ever since I became aware of the Brawlers and their extended family.  It's Bull and his house whose been the home and focal point of so many of these stories.  And it's been Bull who's been such a steadying influence on those around him when everything felt like it was being destroyed for them.  Yet Bull was ever lonely, alpha among alphas, and you wanted to get the know the person called Bull."

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book. Bull has basically adopted the guys from Brawlers who live with him, he’s definitely the papa bear of their group. Gregory, Landon’s boss husband Arnold is ab*sive, and has been for awhile. Gregory is ready to leave and has the divorce papers ready to give him when he gets back from his work trip in Atlanta. Landon invites him to Brawlers for the night. Gregory knows that he shouldn’t go as if Arnold finds out he wont be happy but he’s had enough. As Gregory walks to the bar to see Landon, some guy grabs his a*se but Psycho puts the guy in his place and tells him that we don’t touch without permission especially if the guy belongs to someone else, then escorts him safely to the bar. Gregory sits down at the bar next to a grumpy older man whose looking angrily into his drink. Bull is an alcoholic and hasn’t touched a drink in over a decade but each night he does the same routine, gets his favourite drink but doesn’t drink it. It shows him that he’s still strong enough.

Bull was married to Polly for over 20 years and started drinking as a way to cope with his pain since he wasn’t being true or honest with himself and Polly. I’m glad that Polly and their son Hank dealt with it very well and they still have an amazing relationship. Polly is Bull’s best friend even with how their marriage turned out. Bull notices Gregory straight away especially the ring on his finger. Gregory goes home after his fun night and his husband is home and has been spying on him. Landon is worried about Gregory because he knows that Gregory’s marriage isn’t a happy one and Gregory hasn’t shown up to work for three days and he’s even been to his house but Arnold tells him that Gregory isn’t well. Landon goes to Bull for help as he knows that Gregory’s in trouble so Bull and Landon head to Gregory’s to rescue him. Landon finds Gregory locked in a closet and all bruised up. Arnold tries to sprout sh*t that Gregory fell down the stairs but Bull isn’t taking his sh*t and tells Arnold to sign the divorce papers and stay away from Gregory, otherwise he’d forget it.

Even though Bull is rough around the edges he makes Gregory feel safe. I liked how Gregory and Bull’s relationship progressed. I found it funny how Gregory has basically adopted the guys and calls them his and Bull’s adoptive kids. The guys also call them daddy to be the annoying sh*ts that they are. I really would’ve loved seeing what happened to Arnold after he tried to k*ll Bull and Gregory because he was in way over his head, debt to his eyeballs because he’s a dr*g addict and owes his dealer so much money. He also didn’t like losing to someone else. He considered Gregory his property. Even if Bull considers Gregory his as well, it’s completely different as Bull is loving and protective. Whereas Arnold is an ab*sive possessive a*sehole. I also wanted to see what damage Psycho did to him when Arnold literally ran into him trying to escape the burning building. He totally deserved what he got. Hunter is a total clumsy sweetheart and I’m looking forward to reading his story next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

Fans of this series, even fans of the Twirled World Ink series, will have been waiting with as much anticipation as I have for Bull’s story. Bull is the gentle and grumpy giant who opened his house and filled it with strays over the years. Those strays now have partners and family of their own but they are also a family unit themselves and Bull is the Papa Bear. At over 50 years old Bull is lonely even though his house is full of people and when he looks back he can’t help but drown in his regrets.

This is a love story with a significant age gap that really works from the beginning. Bull is just as fierce, in fact even more so, than most of his friends and colleagues from Brawlers but he is left unsure and floundering a bit when the chance of love is upon him. He married young and devoted his life to a wife that was more a friend and a friend that came in the shape of a bottle. He has pulled together a new family by opening the doors of his home to men who are struggling and just need a moment to breathe. He is possessive, dominant and once he considers you family he will protect you with everything he s.

Gregory Charles is completely out of his comfort zone when he enters Brawlers. That introduction to and odd little group of men is the thing that saves his life a few days later when his abusive husband takes things too far and Landon and Bull wade in to save the day. From the start Bull is enamoured by Gregory to the point that he forgets about his own troubles for a while. But is the younger man really interested in him or just grateful for saving him?

Bull absolutely deserved his happy ending and I’m so pleased that the author found the perfect partner for him. There were the same editing issues as always in the book – I hate mentioning it every time I review this series but I really feel the author is being let down. There is no excuse for a character’s name to be wrong three times – his name is Twitch not Twitched. Despite the errors I fully intend to continue on with the series as this author has me totally addicted to the men and family that has been created!

I was so looking forward to this book and I wasn't disappointed - silver fox, papa bear, just yum!

Bull is in his mid-50's, "adopting" all the waifs and strays and giving them a roof over their heads - they soon becomes a family, full of dysfunctional characters, but it's home and it works. - all disagreements are worked out in the boxing ring! Bull comes out late in life after nearly 25 years married and a son later, but finding his happy ever after is proving to be difficult. Bull has baggage, but he's come to terms with it and strives to be a better man including a close relationship with his son and ex-wife. But don't be swayed by his good looks and work ethic, he can be a grumpy bastard and will still knock your teeth out, he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Gregory appears one evening at an event at the bar - he's Landon's boss (I'm still to discover who Landon is...), younger than Bull's son (age 36) and is the total opposite to Bull's rough, ready and no nonsense attitude. Gregory is also married to an abusive arse. Landon's goes on a rescue mission with Bull in tow when Gregory is absent from work. Once Gregory is in Bull's home, there soon begins this slow burn between the two of them, the slow dance in the kitchen was just all the feels! I loved Bull's sweet words but dirty mouth *sigh* There were also some comic moments, the one with Bull answering the door to Gregory's parents had me snorting like a loon!

A couple of niggles, Gregory's nutty hubby won't give him a divorce and after some stalking and a serious incident at the office, he sort of gets written away in a couple of sentences....it was a bit of damp squib. Also (dare I mention it again??) the editing is still an issue - there doesn't seem to be any - the silly mistakes made is really letting the series down.

Overall, the story ends on a happy epilogue, but I wanted more! So far this has been the best book of the series, Hunter is next and what do they say about "always the quiet ones"?

4.5 stars! Whoo! This book was So Much Better than the first one! I had to quit reading the first in the series, the writing was AWFUL, chopping, confusing, terrible punctuation and the dialog felt flat. I didn't want to give the series another try but I was dying to read Bull's book. I took a chance and am so glad I did! Such a big improvement!

First of all, I loved both characters, they were so good together and I really, REALLY loved how they came together. A very realistic sort of drifting together while the group closes in on them, pushing them towards one another.

There is blatant flirting, when Gregory jokingly tells Bull 'we are never having children' when talking about Twitch. The guys aren't together yet but there is anticipation, brazenness and the feeling of something big there. Bull is protective, sweet and so hopeful for a chance for something real, yet such a badass (that is a tough combination to pull off well, lots of authors tell us their characters are bad boys, but they really aren't!) that you gotta love him. He figures he came out of the closet too late and he wont find someone for himself, but down to earth, slightly damaged and perfect for him Gregory is just what Bull needs! I love when 'just friends' Gregory meets Bulls ex wife and especially his son, that was sweet, then hilarious! And when newly hooked up Bull meets Gregory's parents at the door, poor Gregory's trying to get some clothes on the guy! Such fun!

The story is only 120 pages but its wonderfully paced and just the right length. I am very tempted to give it five stars but a few editing misses distracted me. Man did I love this though!!
