The author is a software engineer and entrepreneur.

In this book he has given a cosmological interpretation of the principal Hindu deities, implying that the seers of old had deep understanding of the origins of the universe.

Since the book connects mythology with modern science, it's not easy reading for someone like me. But mercifully it's very short (about 100 pages) and quite fascinating.

Brahma, he says, is actually Brahmanda itself. The whole of creation. His four heads represent the space -time continuum (three dimensions of space +time because space and time are inter-twined and one cannot exist without the other).

Vishnu (the vishwa of anu) is electrons, protons, neutrons... the world of atoms. That's why it is said that Brahma emerged from the navel of Vishnu. The universe comes from atoms.

Shiv he says is a black hole.(Hence he is represented as Lingam). Apparently all galaxies have one major black hole (& several lesser ones) around which the galaxy revolves. It keeps all the stars and planets together. Without a black hole, solar systems might wander into space, and there will be no life in the universe. Therefore, black holes are essential for the development and progress of a galaxy and in turn, life. They also play an important role in galaxy formation. Ours is called Sagittarius A. It has a mass equal

to about 4 million suns!

According to the Big Bang theory, the universe at the beginning was very hot and confined to a small point called the initial singularity. It is currently expanding, but there would be a point when it would stop doing so and start contracting and end in a singularity. That point would be a black hole that would consume everything.

So the universe begins and ends in a black hole. The beginning is the Big Bang when the Black Hole spews energy which expands into the universe. The end is the Big Crunch when the universe collapses into the Black Hole. Only to again begin the cycle.

Some other interesting explanations-

Nandi is actually the constellation Taurus represented as a bull! In our solar system the earth is placed between the constellation Taurus and center of our galaxy where there is Mahadeva, the super massive black hole at the galactic center. This is the reason why Nandi is placed facing Shiv and outside the sanctum so that we are placed between Nandi and Shiv.

Within the first few moments after the big bang happened and our universe started expanding,  everything was just a soup of high density energy and radiation like it was an ocean of milk. This ocean is actually the ocean mentioned in Samudra Manthan story.

Trishul and Damaru together represent the destructive and constructive powers of Shiva. Trishul represents that Shiva can kill everyone and everything and represents the destructive aspect while Damaru represents that Shiva is responsible for the creation of this srishti (universe).

The author has interpreted many of our lores in such scientific terms but with my pathetic knowledge of physics, 70% of the book went beyond me.

Even then it was a worthwhile read.

A book that has fed my curiosity more than anything else that I have come across in the mythology space.
