Turn on the body’s self-healing abilities, prevent illness before it starts, and reverse the aging process
• Explains how to activate the body’s regenerative abilities and combat inflammation through diet, supplements, detox, herbs, exercise, energy medicine, and mindfulness
• Examines the science of epigenetics and the potential of stem cell therapies for regeneration of joints and organs as well as for healing the telomeres of our DNA
• Reveals the importance of hormone balance and sleep as a core regenerative therapy
Harnessing the advances of the new paradigm of medicine--which focuses on the regenerative abilities of the body rather than symptom management--Elisa Lottor, Ph.D., HMD, explains how each of us can turn on the body’s self-healing abilities, prevent illness before it starts, and reverse the aging process to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.
Beginning with a focus on the foods we eat, the author reveals how many diseases and symptoms of aging are the result of inflammation in the body, caused by poor diet and a lack of crucial nutrients. She explains the top foods to avoid, such as refined sugar, and the best nutrient-rich foods to include, along with easy and delicious recipes. Showing how regenerative medicine treats the roots of aging and disease, preventing them before they start, she details the regenerative properties of the liver complex, explaining the best ways to detox, and reveals how to restore optimal microbe balance in your gut. Dr. Lottor explores the regenerative properties of adaptogens, herbs, and nutriceuticals, the unobtrusive healing practices of energy medicine, the importance of hormone balance, and the concept of living water. She also underscores sleep as a core regenerative therapy.
Looking at the most cutting-edge research in the rapidly emerging field of regenerative medicine, Dr. Lottor examines the potential of stem cell therapies for regeneration of joints and organs as well as for lengthening our DNA’s telomeres, the shrinkage of which is now considered a chief cause of aging. She also looks at the science of gene expression--epigenetics--and how DNA can be used as both a health predictor and a tool for preventing inherited diseases. Including a comprehensive resource section for finding products and practitioners, Dr. Lottor offers each of us the necessary tools and information to reverse aging and participate in your own wellness.
Summary: A kitchen sink overview. if you need more depth, you will def have to supplement with other materials. Luckily that is provided.
I liked that they talk about chronic inflammation is a major source of the reason why people age. Later they discuss the idea that Sugar might be a cause of inflammation for some.
They talk about the Stem Cell facelift on p. 74. I've been learning more about this as a few friends have done it with amazing results.
There is a list of things that have been studied and are beneficial to anti-aging of the brain. A few I liked were 1) exercising the brain (as with puzzles, mental engagements, videogames, etc) 2) Taking care of your gut. There's a whole section on that. 3) Listening to classical music. 4) Laughter - They briefly talk about the benefits of countering stress hormones and also the ability of this to improve memory. I have been studying laughter, so exciting to know I'm on the right track. 5) Meditation 6) Sleep P. 125 - I missed this or it was not in my earlier readings on telomeres. 1984 study by Elizabeth Blackburn of UC - San Fran " discovered that the enzyme telomerase has the ability to lengthen the telomere by synthesizing DNA from RNA primer." I did not realize it was that long ago. The idea is that prior to that we saw telomere's naturally dying around 120 years of age. But now, it's as if we could go until 150. Not sure if it's farther along even now. p. 128 - Studies on lifestyle choices and telomeres. Basically, if you live healthily, your telomeres are definitely longer.
p. 129-132 talks about Astaxanthin, the supplement found in Salmon. I had no idea this was what the Salmon craze was all about. I'm totally sold now.
P. 132 - talks about Nattokinase. It's this breakfast food that comes from fermenting soybeans. I think I know what this is and it's also used in Chinese cooking. It's supposed to be really big in heart health, namely making sure you never have clots.
p. 210 Studies show that gratitude makes you live longer.
Based on the title and blurb, I was expecting a very dry and textbook-like read on the progress of medicine and how what we used to think as sci-fi stuff like nanobots and the recent flare into using stem cells as the future of medicine. I was so wrong! There is stuff like that in there, yes, but on the whole, this is a book that actually explains the aging process and more importantly, what you can do and how you can do it to help your health now. Prevention is better than cure, and this is what this book is mostly about. It really covers pretty much the whole spectrum of aging and the possibilities to slow it down or even stop it. It's not just a book for people who want to stay young or not age - this is a book for everyone in the sense that it will help everyone age better so they can live a fulfilled, healthy life at any age.
This book lays out many options that should be explored for optimal health and healing, especially since treating the root cause of a problem is better than treating a result (e.g., put out the fire, rather than removing smoke). I learned a lot and hope that it helps me stay healthy!
I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
