Inspired by the true story of a Portland, Oregon, cat who stole from his neighbors—and stole America’s heart . . .
SHE’S PUTTING HER LOVE LIFE ON PAWS Jamie Snyder is thirty-four and single but NOT ready to mingle. After suffering through The Year of the Non-Commital Man, The Year of the Self-Absorbed Man, and The Year of the Forgot-to-Mention-I’m-Married Man, Jamie’s ready to celebrate The Year of Me—and MacGyver, of course. MacGyver is an adorable tabby with a not-so-adorable habit of sneaking out at night and stealing things from the neighbors. That’s right, MacGyver is a cat burglar. He’s still the only male Jamie trusts—and the only companion she needs . . .
BUT HER CAT HAS OTHER IDEAS MacGyver knows his human is lonely. He can smell it. It’s the same smell he’s noticed on their neighbor David, a handsome young baker who’s tired of his friends trying to fix him up. But now MacGyver’s on the case. First, he steals something from David and stashes it at Jamie’s. Then, he steals something from Jamie and leaves it with David. Before long, the two are swapping stolen goods, trading dating horror stories, and trying not to fall in love. But they’re not fooling MacGyver. When humans generate this much heat, the cat is out of the bag . . .
Melinda Metz grew up in San Jose, California. People sometimes ask if she knows the way there. She kinda does, but she has an off-kilter sense of direction, so to be confident of arriving, it's better to consult some kind of navigational device.
Her mother tried to teach her to read in kindergarten, but Melinda had no interest. She also had no interest in learning to write her name. (FYI, when Melinda was in kindergarten it was all about finger-painting, play time, and naps.) Eventually, she mastered both and even majored in English at San Jose State University.
After college, Melinda moved to Manhattan to seek her fortune, which involved learning to identify fruits and vegetables while working at a grocery store, making $2.73 working backstage for an off-off Broadway play (her part of the box-office profits), and editing books.
Melinda and the lovely and talented Laura J. Burns pretty much became unofficial writing partners when they were editors at the same company. They teamed up to brainstorm story ideas, and at some point their brains fused in some key places. Later they worked on the Roswell High book series, Laura developing and editing the series, Melinda writing.
That series led to Melinda and Laura, now an official writing team, writing two TV pilots, moving to L.A. to work on the Roswell TV show, and briefly living in Toronto while on the writing staff of 1-800-Missing. They both continue to write books, together and separately.
Laura and Melinda's new book, Sanctuary Bay, a YA thriller, is coming out in January 2016. It's set at an ultra-exclusive private school on an island. Once a student is accepted to the school, they must stay until graduation. No visits home, no contact with the outside world at all. Find out why in January!
The first four books in Melinda's new middle-grade mystery series,S.M.A.R.T.S., are out now. The books involve a group of kids in a makerspace club and they all have lots of science info. For all the cool geeks out there!
Melinda lives in Concord, NC with her dog, Scully (yes, she loves the woo-woo so much she named her dog after a kickass X-Files character). She has never regretted learning to read and write her name.
this book was a cute, fluffy read that included a loving cat, a sweet baker, and one of my favorite tropes: fake dating. it also explored grief as jamie mourned the loss of her mother and david mourned the loss of his wife. david was an absolute sweetheart and i loved how he baked cat paw cupcakes for jamie and cat treats for mac. i also loved reading macgyver’s point of view! he was such a devoted and mischievous cat, who cared deeply for his owner and their little community.
i wanted to give it four stars, but the pacing was a little slow at times. but all in all, my hufflepuff heart enjoyed this story! 🐈🧁🌼💕
What a nice and lovely feel good romance without being to cheesy.
McGyver is a kitty with a mission: make his human happy again. It is really entertaining to read the efforts the little cat makes and how he decides on his next move and side projects. It made the approach for describing the developing romance very light-hearted and fun.
I had picked up Talk to the Paw purely by luck. I was in the general fiction section of local bookstore getting a book for a friend and saw the kitty on the cover and the witty title. I took a picture and sent it to my fiance saying it sounded like a me kind of book! He laughed and suggested I get it. I read the synopsis on the back and thought "Hey, why not! If it's from a cats POV, I'll probably love it." And you know what? I did love it!
Jamie has recently moved to LA in the hopes of finding herself. David is a widower who has been unable to move on since the passing of his wife three years ago. The two of them are both lonely, but too stubborn to realize they would be perfect for each. Luckily, MacGyver knows what's best for both of them!
The story of MacGyver stealing from the neighbours to help bring them together was adorable! This novel was told from alternating POVs including McGyver, Jamie and David.
This was a romance novel without being too "in your face" about it. I even found myself shedding a few tears towards the end. This was a very cute, funny and lighthearted read.
Highly recommended for any cat lovers or light romance readers. 5/5 stars! (I may be slightly biased because I love kitties so much!)
When my person first brought home this book, she seemed so happy and amused. I was skeptical of the strange looking cat on the cover, but decided to let her read it anyway. But every time she opened the book, her smile faded and her eyes rolled so often that I was worried they would get stuck that way. When she finally finished the last page, she tossed the book to the floor, sighed in disgust, and gave one final eye-roll. Clearly, as I had suspected to start, the book was garbage. As a sophisticated, well-read feline, I simply can't allow my human to possess inferior quality literature. So while she was sleeping, I snuck upstairs, snatched up the book with my teeth, tossed it into my litter box, and buried it as deep as I could, never to be seen again.
In all seriousness, this just wasn't a good book. It was extremely predictable, repetitive, shallow, and riddled with typos. Even the "cute" cat rhetoric got old really fast. However, I really wasn't expecting much to begin with, which is what saved it from a 1-star rating.
If you love cats you will love this book. If you love the modern Cinderella stories where the reader sees what the characters don't and you can't turn the pages fast enough to find out if they ever get out of their own way and allow nature to take its course-- Then you will love this story. If you're a reader that simply enjoys a fast read, populated with appealing, believable characters Talk To The Paw will appeal to you.
MacGyver is Jamie Snyder's cat. Well, actually he's "the man in her life." She trusts him, confides in him and since swearing off real men as companions, MacGyver is her #1. MacGyver isn't convinced his human is really finished with men...he can smell her loneliness. Whether Jamie is aware of it or not, MacGyver knows his human needs companionship he cannot provide. Surprisingly MacGyver notices their neighbor, David is emanating the same odor as his Jamie. Could it be they are both lonely and are putting off a scent only the cat recognizes?
MacGyver (the TV character) might have been a top-notch, can do, can make anything out of anything dude. But Macgyver the cat is a loyal, loving, can do-kind-a-cat that resorts to becoming a cat-burglar to help his human. Jamie's neighbor David recently lost his wife Clarrissa and despite the urging of his friends, simply is not ready to move past his mourning. He has a dog named Diogee that has no clue his human is lonely. MacGyver seems to be the only one, human or pet that recognizes how perfect Jamie and David could be together. All they need is a push. So the cat starts stealing David's laundry...a sock here, a towel there. Jamie figures out who the odd laundry pieces belong too - but sees David as merely a friend. MacGyver is like "what is wrong with these people?" "Why do humans complicate something that comes so very natural in the animal world?"
Can Jamie and David see past their personal issues and view the big picture right in front of them? Or are they destined to complicate that which should come about so naturally?
MacGyver the cat will quickly win you over. You will be silently cheering for the humans in the story to get as smart as the cat. His loyalty and dedication to Jamie are admirable and positively adorable. Talk To The Paw is a quick read, that keeps you warmly enveloped in the story right up to the very last page.
I loved the story. Being a cat lover, with four of the adorable, aloof, highly intelligent fur babies at home, Talk To The Paw had me wondering if they smell my feelings too. (They sure act like it!)
I do not have a cat and am not really a cat person, but that did not stop me from enjoying this hilarious, cozy romance story. I listened to the audiobook of this story and thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt like I was listening to the thoughts of MacGyver the cat. Now I always loved the MacGyver television show, especially the old one, and this cat does certainly use what is available to him to solve what he perceives is a problem just like his namesake, although Mac, as he is called, solves Love Problems.
MacGyver is Jamie Snyder's cat. She trusts him, confides in him and since swearing off men MacGyver, aka Mac, is the only male in her life. Mac has an amazing sense of smell and can smell loneliness on people, especially Jamie and the human next door. Whether Jamie is aware of it or not, Mac knows his human needs companionship he cannot provide. When Mac notices their neighbor, David is emanating the same odor as his Jamie, he decides that he needs to do something about it. What he does is hilarious. As the blurb states, Mac resorts to becoming a cat-burglar to help Jamie. Jamie's neighbor David recently lost his wife Clarrissa, and despite the urging of his friends, he is not ready to have another relationship, Mac has other ideas. Mac seems to be the only one, human or animal that recognizes how perfect Jamie and David could be together.
Mac's resourcefulness is hilarious. His escapes, thefts and taunts of other animals had me giggling. When he steals David's boxers and drops them on Jamie in her sleep, after gagging, I burst out laughing. I also enjoyed the human characters in this book. Jamie and David were cute. They were civil to each other and as they got to know one another, the spark was there. The teens in the neighbourhood are a secondary story. Love may be in the air there as well. There is also a young girl who spends a lot of time alone with her sister due to working parents and Mac even gets involved in that situation. He is one wonderful cat.
I loved this story. It was fun to listen to and everyone gets a happily ever after.
What I liked about this book. The cat, Mac and the neighbor Ruby. The inner snark of Jamie. The cat burglary.
What was expected and ok, the HEA, though it was a Super Duper HEA.
Over the top? The houses in that neighborhood. Is that even possible? Also, one can’t have an HEA without first the problem that needs to be overcome. It was realistic and it involved lack of communication. Did I like it? No.
I also disliked Hud. He was slightly delusional and maybe needed a reality check at the best, therapy at the worst.
The blind dates could have been written with Jamie having an actual backbone and I would have liked them a bit more. As it was, the one with the a-hole teacher had me fuming. And I didn’t like that Marie and Helen didn’t take “no” for an answer. That was disrespectful. All, unfortunately, true to life I am sure.
I picked this book up due to the cover and liked the storyline, so decided to give a romance a try. It was ok. 3.5 stars, rounded up because I absolutely LOVED Mac. I have a soft spot for kitties. So a soft 4 stars. Without him? Three, definitely. If you like animals as fully fledged characters in your books and a HEA that is so sweet you get a cavity, then this is the book for you.

Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to read this book!
I had one bad reading experience today, and I almost didn't want to read another. I'm glad I did, because I gobbled this up! Who knew a cute cat and dog related romcom was missing from my life? Not me!
I requested this purely on the cat on the cover; I wanted something a little different from my usual reading fare and this fit the bill nicely. It's romantic without being cheesy, sexy without being over the top and unbelievable. A couple in a romance that I didn't hate? Be still my heart! My cold, dead heart! <3
If you're looking for fun, romance and cats, then this is the book for you. Highly recommended!
Talk to the Paw by Melinda Metz is a funny romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud. Jamie Snyder is in her 30's and tired of dating and has sworn off men. Jamie's cat, MacGyver, has other plans because he can smell the loneliness on his owner and other humans in the apartment complex. MacGyver sneaks out of their apartment and steals items to bring people together, which was often funny. I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for the author's other books. I love all the quirky characters that bring this book together, and MacGyver of course. If you want a funny, heartwarming quick read, I recommend this book.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
So it’s a love story about a girl (who owns a match-making cat) and a boy (with his big goofy dog). You can’t take a book too seriously that’s based on the actual klepto-kitty. It was cute, light, funny and a fun love story. Cat lovers will especially like it, even if some of the things Mac does seems impossible. Just don’t take it too seriously!
E as fugas?
5 stars I was sent this book for a fair and honest review. The story of Jamie a woman who Is taking a year off to find her real passion and David a widower trying to move on with his life. Also, a cat named MacGyver and a dog name Diogee. Jamie and David are both tired of being set up on terrible blind dates so they decide to fake date each other mix that with a cat who likes to steal things to bring people together a lovable dog and a cast of neighbors you have the recipe for a great book.. There are a few moments that I have to suspend belief. Some of the things MacGyver brings home seem impossible but it’s easy to look past those things. A book that could have turned into a complete angst feast is actually very light and fluffy for the most part. Don’t eat or drink anything well reading the book as you might choke from laughing so hard. Great for any romance lover, or cat lover even dog lover.
3.5 STARS - light and fluffy contemporary inspired by a real life klepto kitty!
Jamie moves to Storybook Court, a quirky LA neighborhood, with her cat, Macgyver, after her decision to take a year off teaching high school history and find herself. Macgyver, sensing his person's loneliness, decides to take it upon himself to fix that. David, who's getting back into dating a few years after the death of his wife, is Macgyver's main mark in his string of cat burglaries.
Macgyver extends his matchmaking services to other Storybook inhabitants as well. Besides Jamie and David, my favorite pairing he brings together is
David's disastrous online dates are hilarious. I love the bits about LA stereotypes like scientology learning centers and pyramid schemes. Diogee is a loveable "bonehead", as Macgyver calls him, definitely a Good Boy.
Some of the neighbors are sweet (Zachary) and some are annoying (Hud). Macgyver's internal cat monologue is cute, only a bit repetitive sometimes. It takes awhile for Jamie and David to get together (I guess its a nice change of pace to not have a couple ripping their clothes off within the first chapter). When they finally meet, butterflies! I like how they grow closer through fake dating and tackle the grief from the loss of their loved ones together. Theres a tiny amount of angst near the end. But I wish there was more of Jamie and David together.
I like the premise, and though I believe cats can manipulate door levers, I'm not so sure about door knobs; and it's hard to believe that so many people have open windows with no screens. Anyway, MacGyver loves his human and wants to make her happy--and not lonely, so he decides to make a connection with another lonely person in the neighborhood. This man, a widower, hasn't gotten over the death of his wife yet though. It's not long before MacGyver is collecting an assortment of belongings, including underwear and a diary, and leaving them on doormats--and occasionally his human. There's an interesting variety of people in the development--I love the storybook architecture--and they include other lonely people, whom MacGyver helps as well; and then there are the matchmakers (friends and neighbors) and a very irritating ex-actor (tolerated much too long). The dating attempts of both Jamie and David are funny. There's more to the story--with background tidbits that I enjoyed--as Jamie is starting over after her move and plans to take a year to find a new direction in her life--without men, so she begins exploring other lifestyle choices, such as surfing, with the help of a new friend. The relationship is complicated, of course, and there's a bit of sex. Btw, David has a bakery, which adds a touch of spice--and cupcakes--to the story.
Title: Talk To The Paw Author: Melinda Metz Publisher: Kensington Books Date of Publishing: January 30, 2018
This book given to me by NetGalley and Kensington Books in exchange for my honest review.
A delightful romantic story told mostly from MacGyver's, that cat, point of view. MacGyver has decided his person, Jamie Snyder needs someone of her own. Starting over in a new town Jamie has decided it is her turn to come first. She is not interested in finding a new man. She is in a quandary as to the items she keeps finding on her front porch. MacGyver is frustrated when Annie has yet to scent the items and recognize another in need of belonging to someone. Widower David appreciates his friends and their efforts to help him get back into the single scene.
I found myself chuckling as I read "Talk to the Paw". I kept looking at my sweet fur babies, thinking "So that is why you do that!" From the very beginning, MacGyver keeps you enthralled. A book for yourself or any cat lover. I could read anything with MacGyver and his winsome story telling. An excellent story to be enjoyed over and over.
I gave "Talk to the Paw" a 5 out of a total of 5 stars.
Haar kat Mac denkt hier echter anders over.
