This novel deals with the attempts of the son of (fictional) Chola king Parthiban, Vikraman, to attain independence from the Pallavaruler, Narasimhavarman.
Kalki makes one theme very strong in this part 1 , which is the burning passion of the chola king. Initially it is shown as helplessness which he expresses to his wife the queen Arulmozhi. I Felt that pain in him not seeing him as a king but as a father or as a husband, how much this could have impacted the opposite person close to him. Kalki always makes this name ' Arulmozhi ' a special one, so in this novel too it was made memorable. The queen choosing parthiban over pallava King, the lovely bond they share between each other, the angst of their much needed separation was just well flushed out. The king being guilty as to whether he is worthy of the queen's sacrifice of choosing him over a king from bigger dynasty gives us a perspective of his insecurities too. This made him so close & relatable. The valiance shown in the war, stepping into it knowing the end, biding farewell to his son engraving his desires in Vikraman's heart adds a strong spine to the story. The cute romance & understanding between the couple " ponnan & valli" adds colour to the beautiful setting by kalki.
The great hero Partipan fighting for freedom. His longing for freedom from being ruled by another king and his sacrifice of his life will be never forgotten in the annuls of history.
Exceptional story from the Legend and an awesome narration ✌️ Detailed description of tiny things in the novel and BGM's are a treat to the listeners ❤️
An inspiring story. One of THE best tamil novels. It portrays friendship love and responsibility of a ruler. But revenge is the emotion that gets more importance. Way the story has been taken forward makes the reader feel he has also lived in that generation along with the king. I would rate it as the second best tamil novel since ponniyin Selvan has taken the first place. Hats off to the author kalki
This short book is to introduce the Chola characters and should be read before ponniyin Selvan. The kingdom’s capital is the present day “Woraiyur”. Goosebumps moment when I read Woraiyur was a bigger city than Tiruchirappalli at the time!! Hailing from Tiruchirappalli, I’m excited for the rest of the book.
A very interesting novel that revolves around a chola king who dies with an unfulfilled dream of ruling an independent kingdom. He wants his son to fulfill this dream and dies fighting a battle aginst the pallavas, under whom he was ruling his kingdom.
