Kid-friendly illustrations invite children straight into Judith Wolf Mandell’s story of Sammy’s broken leg. Who couldn’t relate to a stretching, running, twirling, skipping and jumping child? But then there’s the moment of Oh No. And little Sammy’s in terrible pain being rushed to hospital.

Sadly, lots of kids can relate to little Sammy’s sorrows, and this book is delightfully written for them and their parents, offering a realistic childs-eye view of life with your body in a cast. There are rules and regulations (Don’t use the bar to lift or turn Sammy). There are medicines and miseries, and there’s that dreaded question “How soon is soon?” about the day when the cast might maybe come off. Plus there are kisses.

The author uses whispering kisses with comfort and guidance for little Sammy, secret kisses that only Sammy can hear, and promising kisses that wait till they’re needed no more before flying away. They add a sweetly individual touch for Sammy and for young readers, and balance the realism of the story with a pleasing touch of whimsy.

Sammy’s Broken Leg is perfect for children in casts and for parents and friends. It’s a nice cautionary tale for the rest of the neighborhood too. Not ending up in a cast is almost certainly a better choice. But some kids don’t get choices and their story’s nicely slipped between the pages too. An enjoyable, wise and fun book—highly recommended.

From the cover on, the illustrations in this darling book are going to draw you and your little one into the story.
Kissing the boo boo but more when disaster hits and Sammy breaks a thighbone and ends up in a life altering cast. Your heart will break for the little one, but the love shown and the showers of kisses bring hope.
Loved the calendar with the big X’s to count off the days, a great idea for a parent to use to help show how the time is counting down.
Highly recommend this book to have on hand as a gift for another child, or maybe your own. Written with love and lots of kisses.

Sammy loves to run and twirl and jump all the time. In fact that's what she loves to do above all else. So, when she falls and breaks her leg her world is quickly turned upside down. Now she's in a cast which limits her ability to do much of anything. And she's not very happy that she must wait an entire month for the cast to be removed. But, from the moment she's in the hospital, until the time she tries out her newly healed leg, Sammy is surrounded by the encouragement of those who love her. These warm wishes come to her in the form of whispers from countless loving kisses and help her know that everything is going to be all right.

Author Judith Wolf Mandell's Sammy's Broken Leg (Oh, no!) and the Amazing Cast That fixed It offers youngsters a truly accurate depiction of what one might expect when they've had a bad break. But despite the pain and frustration, knowing that there are those who love you and are sending warm wishes your way can help ease the pain and frustration. This book comes highly recommended and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

Sammy loves to jump, twirl and run. That is until she falls and breaks her leg.

The illustrations in this book are wonderful. The details of the hospital visit can make any child feel safe and comfortable if they are ever in this situation.

Everyone has a child that loves to be a kid. All of the jumping and running can lead to a fall. My daughter is 9 years old and she acts just like Sammy. So we read this together and she loved it as much as I did. This is a book that we can read over and over again. And if anything was to ever happen to her or one of her friends I think they would find comfort in this story.

I will recommend this to all of my daughters friends to read.

"Sammy's Broken Leg (Oh, No!) and the Amazing Cast That Fixed It" by Judith Wolf Mandell and illustrated by Lise C. Brown is an empathetic story that will encourage children who have broken a bone or had a sibling break a bone. It includes details—such as wearing earplugs when they cut off the cast—that will help prepare kids for the tough part of wearing a cast. With fun pictures by Lise C. Brown, the book targets children six and under, but I could imagine it becoming a memento to pre-schoolers who have endured a cast. As a mother of nine children, many of whom have had a broken bone, I see the value of a book like this that helps children understand why and how they have a cast. It also includes whimsical kisses from those who care for the child with a cast--a perfect gift from loving friends and relatives!

Sammy's Broken Leg and the Amazing Cast by Judith Wolf Mandell

I think because I write books for kids that I am more critical when I read other author's books for kids. I don't know if that is true but I really liked this book. An irrepressible child finds herself limited by a broken thigh bone. This book details the accident and the recovery.

The author did a great job in showing the child and her frustration but also showed how the well wishes of family and friends can help alleviate a difficult situation.

Kisses whooshing in to help made me feel better and I'm not a kid or don't have a broken bone. Well done book for kids, even better for kids that may have been injured.

I highly recommend.

This is a niche book, and the author does state that she wrote this book, since she couldn't find one to read to her own granddaughter, who landed in a ginormous cast. With that in mind, it is a sweet, comforting tale.

Sammy bounces on the trampoline, falls off and ends up with a broken thigh. To make sure it heals properly, the doctors place her in a partial body cast for four weeks.

Sammy is a spirited, lively character and a ball of sunshine. It's easy to feel for her when she ends up on the couch and is unable to move or do any of those wonderful things she did before. While being quirky and fun, this book doesn't put on rose colored glasses, but rather exposes how uncomfortable, irritating and frustrating such a cast can be for a kid. Still, the message is clear--things get better and life is still worth a smile.

The text is easy to read and varied to bring across the different emotions and situations in exciting ways, great for ages 3+. There are small moments of love sprinkled in, which keep the whole thing filled with warm, fuzzy feelings. Details on the particular problems which occur and things to look out for are also presented, which make it clear what situation this book is written for. I believe kids who are moping with this exact problem will relate well.

The illustrations are colorful, lively and have cute details added in. The style is more of a hand-drawn one, not exact and reminding of a child's sketch. But this seems to be the point. My own daughter did complain about one or two character depictions, but in general, she enjoyed flipping through.

Summed up, this is a warm, cheerful and encouraging read aimed for a very specific audience, and for this case, it works well. Parents, grandparents, caretakers and kids in this situation are sure to enjoy this tale.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and wanted to leave my personal opinion.

Hello, everybody! Today’s book is Sammy’s Broken Leg (Oh No!) And The Amazing Cast That Fixed It, written by Judith Wolf Mandell and illustrated by Lise C. Brown, an uplifting story about injury and recovery from the perspective of a little one.

Inspired by the author’s granddaughter, the story opens on Sammy, a little girl who loves to run and play. When she takes a tumble off of her trampoline one day, she has to be rushed to the hospital, and wakes up to an unpleasant surprise: she has broken her “thigh bone,” and must be in a huge cast for weeks! The cast keeps her from doing many of the things she loves, and it’s very uncomfortable. But Sammy knows that the cast holds a secret: inside are the kisses and love of her family and friends, all whispering encouragement and helping her bone to heal.

This was a neat little indie book that fills a very specific need. Injuries can be tough and stressful for children, especially when each day of recovery can feel like weeks. This story can help to foster patience and understanding with little ones who are experiencing this for themselves. I liked that it set fairly realistic expectations for kids: healing takes time, and even after Sammy’s cast is off, she has to work to strengthen her atrophied muscles. Also nice was the way it framed the cast itself in a positive light; rather than being a restrictive prison, it is actually a symbol of the love and well-wishes Sammy’s family has for her. The illustrations are not as polished as one might see in mass market kidlit, but it’s delightful nonetheless, filled with color, emotion and detail that shows a passion for the story. The length is stretching it a bit for baby bookworms, but JJ didn’t seem to mind. Overall, this would be great for helping a little one through their own “Oh no!” injury, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!

This is a fantastic book to help ease the anxiety in children when it comes to a broken bone. It is insightful and the kids can relate to the playful drawings. This book acts a a useful tool to help both kids and parents prepare for the healing process and the other obstacles and rules that take place after a broken bone injury occurs. I think that this book is very useful to help ease the emotional pain of such an injury. It is never easy to see our children hurt and this book helps to talk our children through the process.

This book is perfect for a child who has injured herself and needs information and reassurance about how the doctors proceed with her complete recovery.

Sammy, a rambunctious, adorable little girl cannot contain herself. She loves to spin and twirl and is in continuous movement mode. One day she takes an unfortunate tumble and ends up with a broken thigh bone. Oh my! In excruciating pain her mother whisks her off to the hospital and Sammy finds herself wrapped up in a restrictive cast that she finds hard to bear.

She is not pleased with the body cast but with the help of loving parents, grandparents and friends she makes it through the long month of healing and is restored back to health once again.

The book documents Sammy's journey and is a wonderful book to share with a child if they too are experiencing a similar mishap. The book encourages, calms fears for both the child and parents and delivers a very positive message to all.

The illustrations are colourful and kid-friendly. They visually draw the child in so they can actually see what is happening to Sammy every step of the way.

I loved the phantom Kisses (that whisper to only Sammy) and bestow upon her comfort and love as she struggles through this very difficult and painful time in her life.

"One Kiss for a Boo-Boo. A Billion Kisses for a Cast!" is a loving remedy that will cast all fear aside. The is an endearing book that I highly recommend.

Sammy's Broken Leg (Oh No!) and the Amazing Cast That Fixed It is a sweet picture book about a young girl and her recovery from a broken leg. Sammy's story is simple yet engaging, perfect for the intended age group. The author does a nice job of acknowledging Sammy's feelings of fear and frustration in a positive and uplifting way, and making the medical aspects seem not so scary. Young readers can empathize with Sammy and perhaps settle fears of their own. I liked the warm, cheerful feel throughout, greatly supported by the whimsical and colorful illustrations. I felt as if Sammy could run and twirl right off the page. The bright colors and little details made me smile. A lot of care and love went into the design, artwork and story. A really lovely book.
