Translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur'an (also known as The Koran) is the sacred book of Islam. It is the word of God whose truth was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. As it was revealed, so it was committed to memory by his companions, though written copies were also made by literate believers during the lifetime of the Prophet.





The first full compilation was by Abu Bakar, the first Caliph, and it was then recompiled in the original dialect by the third Caliph Uthman, after the best reciters had fallen in battle. Muslims believe that the truths of The Holy Qur'an are fully and authentically revealed only in the original classical Arabic. However, as the influence of Islam grows and spreads to the modern world, it is recognised that translation is an important element in introducing and explaining Islam to a wider audience.


This translation, by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, is considered to be the most faithful rendering available in English.

My second favourite translation after Muhammad Asad's 💛 I know this isn't a very popular opinion as Yusuf Ali's translation is a bit outdated, and I frequently don't resonate much with his interpretations (which is why Asad remains my favourite, as his interpretation aligns the closest with what I perceive to be Islam's priorities), but Yusuf Ali has crafted a translation that is lyrical and beautiful. It's also a bit nostalgic for me, I vividly remember my grandfather telling me about the story of how Yusuf Ali wrote the translation, and I hear the words "lofty language" in his voice because that's how he described it to me. I think it's an apt description. It's interesting how every translator emphasizes different things. Yusuf Ali's translation is particularly moving in its discussions of trusting Allah. I'm in school again and didn't have as much time to linger on this as I have for other translations I've read, but I'd like to read it again one day and actually read the footnotes when I have the luxury of taking the time.

Have read this version of the Quran several times, and recommend this translation to those who want a close translation of the original Arabic. As an American English reader, some of it still felt opaque though...
