Rate this book
Strike a match, light the candle…and fall into the spell. Heart’s Desire Book 1 Christopher Beckett is tired of being alone. His wolf is howling for his mate, and Chris knows it is only a matter of time before his needs override everything else in his life, so he decides to cast the spell all the Becketts have used to call their mates to them. What he wants is a woman of an older lineage, of power to equal his own. And she has to accept the one aspect that sets him apart from almost every other his wolf. What he gets is Alannah Evans, a powerful witch of the Evans Coven. Lana has no problems with the wolf—she does have a problem with the fact that Chris is a wizard. Wizards and witches traditionally don’t get along very well but the sparks flying between them can’t be denied. When it becomes clear that an old enemy has targeted them both Chris winds up engaging his enemy in a duel that could cost him his life.

Dana Marie Bell wrote her first short story when she was thirteen years old. She attended the High School for Creative and Performing Arts for creative writing, where freedom of expression was the order of the day. When her parents moved out of the city and placed her in a Catholic high school for her senior year she tried desperately to get away, but the nuns held fast, and she graduated with honors despite herself.

Dana has lived primarily in the Northeast (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, to be precise), with a brief stint on the US Virgin Island of St. Croix. She lives with her soul-mate and husband Dusty, their two maniacal children, an evil ice-cream stealing cat and a bull terrier that thinks it’s a Pekinese.

Kitty's review posted on Guilty Pleasures

Witches, wizards, warlocks and wolves … oh, my! Yes, what an interesting read “Shadow of the Wolf” was. It had a little bit of everything and a whole lot of fun.

Christopher Beckett is the middle son. He’s restless and knows that it’s time to call his mate to complete himself. He is a wizard whose line was cursed by a witch turning them into werewolves. He and his family have embraced the wolf side and have learned to live with both magic and the wolf. He sends out his spell into the universe to bring his mate to him. Enter, Alannah (Lana) Evans. She’s a witch and not just any witch. She’s from the most powerful family in the Witches Coven. Wizard’s and witches don’t mix – they are like oil and water. But, the goddess has chosen and so mote it be!

I was hooked on this book from page one. The book opens with Chris casting his spell and then goes to Lana in a strip club at a bachelorette party. What happens from there had me laughing and sighing for the next few hours. Chris’ biggest fear was Lana not embracing his wolf – wrong! That isn’t was worried her the most – the joining of a witch and a wizard had her on edge. How would they make it work? But, they do and she doesn’t even realize that she’s accepted everything until she casts a spell asking the powers that be to protect her “mate”.

Chris and Lana together are hysterical. Now, throw in his 3 over-bearing brothers and Lana’s Grammy and you have nothing but a smile-fest. I absolutely adored how she razzed them all about being wolves……

““What is that?”
“Protection amulet,” he responded absently. “Need it for a shielding spell.”
She stroked it, feeling the dormant magic within it. “Groovy.”
His lips twitched. He looked up at her over the top of his glasses. “Groovy?”
She shrugged. “Isn’t that what Shaggy always says?”
He shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose under his glasses, but she could see the way his mouth trembled from trying to hold in the laugh.
Next thing she knew Chris tumbled her into his lap. She squeaked, grabbing hold of his shoulders. He nipped her chin. “Who gets to be Thelma?”
“Not me!” Zach held up his hand, grinning, still writing scribbles on pieces of paper.
Lana tapped her lips with her fingernail, getting into the game. She could sense some of the tension leaving their shoulders. “You’re more Danger-Prone Daphne, I think.”
Zach sputtered indignantly while his brothers laughed.
Chris leaned down and kissed the tip of her nose. “Daniel would make an interesting Thelma.”
“And Gareth could be Fred, since he leads your merry little band of misfits.”
Chris grinned. “He has pulled Zachary’s ass out of the fire more than once.”
Lana nodded, her own lips turning up. “And Zach does have a real fondness for the color purple.”
Gareth was leaning against a bookcase, face buried in his arm, his shoulders shaking. Daniel was openly grinning at his brother Zach.”

And that’s just a little taste of the playfulness between Chris and Lana and her future brothers-in-law. I laughed when Chris wanted her to taker her Ibuprofen and she needed food….”She grinned up weakly at him. “I’ll wait while you fetch something.” One brow rose. “Fetch?” “Go, boy! Go!””. And, this went on throughout the whole book. Loved it!

Then there is Cole. Christopher’s nemesis. Why is he after Chris? Why is Lana the ultimate target? What happens when they all find out that Cole is not a wizard but he, and his family, are all warlocks? Most of these questions are answered in “Shadow of the Wolf” but a lot is left open for the rest of the series. And, honestly, I can’t wait to read “Hecate’s Own”, Zach’s story. Gareth’s and Daniel’s story should be just as interesting and fun – if the hint’s in the book are any indication.

So, if you love paranormal, with lots of hot sex and a little magic thrown in, you’ll love this book. Dana Marie Bell did a wonderful job combining all of this together. Oh, yea, the sex – hmmm, steaming is a good word. **Shutters** remembering the scene when he claims his mate!

This book just didn't work for me. I liked Lana but I never did like Chris (I think after he drugged her the first night he met her just to make sure she didn't leave I was out and he never did anything that redeemed him). There was a little bit of a plot with tons of sex. I don't mind sex in my books in fact sometimes I really like it but it just didn't seem to fit in with the plot all that well. There's all this danger going on and someone trying to kill Chris and Lana and all he can think about is sex. Oh and if she doesn't mate him, he dies (which she knows - I hate that plot point). I also never really bought the reason Cole hated Chris so much as believable. I did like the youngest brother and found his story interesting but that's about it.

Bell has created another fantastic world in Shadow of the Wolf. It's a story about witches but with a unique twist. Christopher Beckett is a wizard from a family cursed to live as werewolves. Because of the curse the Beckett's have only one true mate and Chris has gotten to the point where he needs to call his. What he gets is a spunky witch who has a bigger problem with him being a wizard than a werewolf.

This is an interesting story where witches, wizards and warlocks don't like each other and tend to keep to their own. I loved the idea that even though they are both magical people Chris and Alannah have very different ways of doing things. Witches are more impulsive and the wizards plan ahead and this drives both insane.

I really enjoyed every minute of this book and I fell in love with all the characters. I enjoyed the idea behind the story and like all Bell's books this one had me laughing out loud and blushing like crazy.

If you love magic and some hot sex this book is for you!

I really enjoy the different spin on the different magic cultures. Witches, Wizards, Warlocks all have their own court & their own spin on how to access their magic.

The romance starts off creepy -- dude you don't do that to hot chocolate. As it gets going -- definite smut warning -- but if you skip past the scenes -- there is still a good story. Although the hero is bordering a alpha-male -asshat scenario.

The family interactions are fun & the banter with pop culture references add sparkle.

I normally don’t enjoy books about magic users (although I love shifter romance!) so this was a pleasant break from all the biker books I’ve been devouring lately.

No cheating
No ow/om
A bit of holding back by the heroine because she just met the Hero
An interesting overall arc that makes me want to read the next book.

This is a polished up re-release, but I didn't read it in its previous incarnation. I am a big Bell fangirl, but I thought Shadow of the Wolf was a lot funnier than her other books. I adored Lana's feistiness. This book's plot is basically based on Fated Mate Syndrome, but Lana didn't just be like 'Yay, man!' Chris had to work for it.

I'm really looking forward to the next book, Hecate's Own (Zach's story). However, I would have liked to seen a smidge more world-building. I didn't feel like the world was revealed very smoothly as things would get explained after the fact.

Given the lighter tone, I think this would appeal to fans of Eve Langlais's Furry United Coalition series.

In my opinion it is really hard to sell the character of a male witch to anyone, it is just so lame in a way. But the idea of combining that of a witch and a shifter just made him even more hotter. Dana can never let me down, her collection of books are my most cherished because there is something just unique about how she puts so much care into getting every detail right in all of her stories, its just so adorable how she spins the tale of her characters romance I find myself sighing alot when I read one of her novels.

This book was interesting for the simple fact that I have never read a book where the wolf was a wizard too. They usually have a wolf dating a witch but never doing spells too. Very interesting. Quick read. I finished in a matter of 2 days. Would have finished sooner if I didn't have to write a paper but got it done none the less. I liked it.

Never have I laughed harder while reading a book. Dana Marie Bell’s personality shines in Shadow of the Wolf. Having now read her Halle Pumas series (but not yet the Gray Court), I am convinced this has been her best thus far.

Great start to a new series! Dana Marie Bell is quickly becoming a favorite werewolf author of mine, and a must-buy author. This was also a nice change because the focus was actually on witches/warlocks rather than being a werewolf book. Can't wait to read more about the Beckett brothers!

Chris and Alannah make a cute couple. Lust and sex are guaranteed. The story has real potential though with all the differences between the warlocks, wizards and witches.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well I must admit that when I saw the very VERY ugly cover, I had a doubt ... Even a HUGE DOUBT !!! But the reviews were very good and it's been ten million years since it was in my TBR and as I didn't completely recover from the last Patricia Briggs books, I needed another book with shifters =)
And it was a good surprise: well it's not the best book on the planet and I didn't become utterly addicted but I read it in one go, I laughed a lot and I became attached to the characters who were hilarious (a lot of geek references that made me laugh a lot =D) and to the universe that intrigued me a lot =D And for once, the "predestined mate love story" didn't bother me at all =)
In short, for those who love light and funny fantasy books, it's a must-read = D
2.5 stars. It was entertaining and amusing and I really liked Lana. But there were a couple of things that really bugged me which led to the relatively low rating for an otherwise enjoyable book. The first one is such a small things in terms of the overall story and was also completely unnecessary to moving the plot. You could easily have had their relationship develop along the same track without this very disturbing event. It is when Chris and Lana first meet as he rescues her from Cole and takes her back to his house. He knows she is his mate (because he cast a spell to find her and she arrives basically on his doorstep) but Lana doesn't. She is drenched from the rain and in a strange man's house and
An interesting mix of shifter and different magic users for this series. Wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into but liked the way this flowed and the direction it is going.
Alannah was funny and likeable, holding her own against the Beckett boys. Christopher was likeable but seemed to have a one-track mind, sex.
The family interactions were enjoyable and interesting, both with Alannah's grandmother and Chris' brothers, going off in diverse directions. Wizards, witches, wolves and king, not forgetting the warlocks.
Will definitely read the next book.
The villain though dealt with, still has a family who will obviously continue to be a problem.
I have read and reviewed from the back of this book previously but review is missing.
There are only 127 pages and it was a struggle. The writing style was really hard to read. It is very juvenile and unpolished. If the character acted older than 14 once in this book, I would be surprised. Boy MC drugs the Girl MC "for her protection." Takes off her underwear when she is drugged out. A lot of "you belong to me" instead of "we are partners." Girl MC is "feisty." Every time I read a book with someone described like that, they are usually more obnoxious than feisty. Their teenage behavior started getting to me and I rolled my eyes a lot.
This read like a bad YA book (with sex) or fan fiction. Because I really don't like the writing style, I am taking the author off my TBRs. I just can't get into it.
When I was a teenager I might have liked this.
quirky but I loved it
I read this years ago and decided to reacquaint myself with it only to realise I’ve never reviewed it.
I love Dana Marie Bell’s books so much. The humour is on point and the sexy times are hot, hot, hot.
Book one is about Christopher (Chris) and Alannah (Lana) a wizard and witch respectively. Plus a pesky little werewolf curse thrown in. Wizards and witches don’t mix but they not only mix but they make magic together. Both are in danger from another wizard and have to protect each other and keep safe. Throw in the other three Beckett wizards and Gramma Evans and it becomes a family affair.
There is an underlying plot throughout the books but each book has two main love interests. I’m loving reuniting with the Beckett boys!
Very Good!
Christopher Beckett is wizard who also changes into a wolf; he's been feeling lonely & longing for his mate. So, he casts the family spell to bring his mate to him & it brings him Lana.
Alannah Evans is a witch who was driving home from a bachelorette party when her car died in the middle of a storm. As she starts walking to find some shelter she feels an ominous presence in 1 direction & a feeling of safety in another & goes towards the safety & finds Christopher in wolf form.
That is the beginning of their story. This was a very good boo as it has the good vs bad plot, family helping family & some sex scenes.
Cóż tu więcej mówić, to Dana Marie Bell. Jej styl się po prostu wyczuwa. Akurat z tą autorką mam tak, że chociaż jakoś super się nie zachwycam jej książkami, to jednak co jakiś czas lubię do niej wrócić i zobaczyć co też ona znów wymyśliła ;)
Całkiem fajna historia, ostateczna walka była dosyć ciekawa. Główni bohaterzy także byli fajni, zero sztuczności a to jest bardzo mile widziane ;)
Jedynie do czego mogę tu się przyczepić to czary - czułam się jakbym czytała opis dziecka które się bawi klockami lego, aczkolwiek na mnie trzeba brać poprawkę bo ja nie gustuje w magii i mam słabą wyobraźnie w tym zakresie.
Dla relaksu, jak najbardziej polecam :)
4.5 stars!
This book was light in the romance department. There were no misunderstandings, stupid decisions, and annoying side characters.
I love how Chris treats Lana. There’s just some sense of security when it comes to fated mates, and the two of them gives off that vibe 100%.
I’m questioning the power of the council for letting the Becketts and Evans take care of the Cole Godwin issue by themselves. Like, hello, civilians are now getting involved. Where are you guys?
Anyway, the smut was hot and Christopher is a great man.
Quick reread. Not my favorite of her books, but a decent start to a new series with a lot of world building thrown in without feeling overwhelming. More of an instalove than I typically prefer, but there’s a good build up for the relationship. The only reason this doesn’t get 4 stars is the casual misogyny that pops up periodically and there are some challenges to it from the female lead, but no real changes or apologies made (once or twice they apologize and then do it again later).
Open door paranormal romance. I can do without the in detail open door scenes, but other than that I love the story. I love Alannah, and Chris. They are such a cute couple, and I absolutely love the care, and protectiveness that the brothers all have! The brothers have such a wonderful dynamic, and I love that they care so much about their family they drop everything to help each other!
It was ok. Too much “Alpha male dominance” and both leads becoming super jealous if anyone even looked at their “mate”. Very tired of that trope, it’s unhealthy.
