Selena Laurence is a USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of One of a Kind Romance. She has published books in Contemporary Romance, New Adult Romance, Romantic Suspense, and Paranormal Romance. She’s also a curated contributor in non-fiction on Medium as SE Reed.
Selena lives in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with her family, her Goldendoodle, and Demon Cat. Her favorite city is Edinburgh, her favorite color is purple, and her favorite shoes are Converse.
We all know what this book is about. Mick is a hockey player who sustains a career ending injury at the beginning of the book and is trying to find himself and his purpose for the future. Solana has lived her entire life for one purpose and one purpose only, to be a big-wig in marketing. Her dream job ... working for the company Mick's father own. Mick's nightmare .... working for his father's company. Do you see where the roads these two are following don't intercept? Well, look closer ... (only by reading the book can you do that and I fully support that endeavor for EVERYONE).
Now I'm going to tell you how the book made me feel. You see up at the top there where I tagged them #mypeople? Some of you will already know what that means but others may not so I'm going to tell you. Solana & Mick crawled right into my heart and settled in for the long haul. THEY made me happy. Their struggles and triumphs lit up my heart. Their story made me smile and it made my heart sing. Mick was the epitome of a good man. He owned who he was and he owned his mistakes and he never shied away. And man was he swoon worthy **happy sigh** Solana was the yin to his yang and vice versa. I'm not gonna lie, there were quite a few times I wanted to reach in my kindle and do a little slapping on Solana, but her struggle was so real and relatable, that my heart hurt for her instead. You see, that's the power Selena Laurence has in her style and prose. Solana's character caused the conflict in this story. It's that simple. And the conflict at its core is a childish mistake. However, Solana herself was so pure and lovely, that you felt her struggle. The conflict didn't create drama for drama's sake. It enhanced the story-line. It made it real. It made it every day. It made it relatable. THAT is how these two kids took residence in my heart.
The Czar: A Standalone Hockey Billionaire Romance is more than just a sports romance story. It's a story of new beginnings. It's a story of family. Forgiveness. Patience. Compromise. And most of all, it's a story of growth! If said this before but it's worth mentioning again, Selena Laurence has MAD writing skills people. Con lo qeu no cuenta es que su cuerpo responde naturalemnte a él y al momento en que la verdad se sepa, podría perder más que su empleo, podría perder su corazón.
3 1/2 stars. I really enjoy Selena Laurence's writing. Despite there being so many hockey romance stories out there, Ms. Laurence's storylines are always unique. In this book Mick, a hockey superstar, has sustained a career ending injury. He lived for hockey and now that he can't play he's lost. He's depressed, only goes out to do his physical therapy and to pick up take out food. Solana, the heroine has just gotten hired by her dream company. She's wanted to work there for years. The company is owned by Mick's father who expects Mick to come and work with him now that his hockey career is over. Problem is Mick doesn't want to work there. He hates the company for something relating to his mother. Meanwhile,we know the company that Solana is working for is the very same one that Mick hates. But for several reasons Solana doesn't tell Mick she's working there. As the attraction grows Solana's lies become more entangled and she doesn't know how to tell Mick where she works. So instead she pushes him away. This story is about learning what's important in life. Why you should always be honest and forthright. It's about forgiveness and fighting for the one you love. This is a standalone book with a HEA.
Selena Laurence, I am so bloody happy to have stumbled across you and this book. When I saw the cover and title of this book I just had to read it skipping over the blurb. When I realized it was a hockey/billionaire romance I thought I died and went to book heaven. Mick/Mishka is a star hockey player injured and unable to play hockey anymore. His father wants him to take his rightful place in the family Vodka business, something he refuses to do. Solana/Solnishka is a young career oriented woman who has abandonment issues and career goals needing to be fulfilled. They meet - he wants her but isn’t used to having to woo a woman and she refuses to get into bed with him. To further complicate things she works for his father’s company and dating Mick is a big no no. I love how their relationship develops, Mick is used to easy lays and realizes he needs to work for his woman and man does he ever. This book is fantastic. Read it.
Sometimes these sports related stories need a decent if not working knowledge of the game. Fortunately for this hot number, its just a nice thing to have. And i do mean hot! Mick and Solana have great chemistry, enough that most everyone else falls from focus... as does injury rehab and tedious days at the office. Wonder what the professor is going to say when she gets home to Ambrose...
This was a great read. I loved the story line. Both people are trying to find what they really want. One after he loses his chosen career and the other as she graduates and goes after the career she has worked so hard for. They find each other just as they are starting to work through things. Strong characters, great love story, hard to put down. Definitely recommend.
This book is funny and sexy. Mick is an injured hockey star and Solana a recent graduate. Their story is funny, complicated and includes a cat named Ambrose. I fully recommend.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Solana and Mick had great chemistry and a real connection. I felt for Mick about losing his identity after hockey and how he evolved himself throughout the book.
I liked the characters, I liked the story. I love that Mick was raised in my hometown and presumably went to my high school. Some aspects of the story confused me a little bit but oh well, move on and enjoy the entertainment..
*I was provided a copy of The Czar by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*
Mick Petrovich’s life has been built around playing professional hockey and enjoying no-strings-attached time with the puck bunnies. When an injury puts him out of hockey for good, it throws everything he’s lived for into turmoil. His father’s pressure to join the family business only makes matters worse. Mick has very personal reasons for wanting to stay as far away from the vodka business as possible.
Solana Werner has just landed her dream job in the marketing department of Petrovich Vodka. She’ll let nothing stand in the way of proving herself in the corporate world, and she may have something to prove in her personal life as well. Her growing attraction to the heir-apparent of Petrovich Vodka, Mick, is dangerous in more ways than she ever imagined. Both Mick and Solana need to figure out what they really want out of life before it’s too late to have it all.
The Czar is a standalone romance from trusted romance author Selena Laurence. Ms. Laurence can always be counted on to deliver a solid plot and well-developed characters, and this book is no exception. Ever the playboy, Mick’s career-ending injury forced him to wake up and take a hard look at his life. From the beginning of the story to the end, Mick worked his way through a life-changing journey to figure out what came next. In addition to the romance between Mick and Solana, Mick also had to choose a new career path and resolve relationship conflicts with his father over the family business.
One of the things that drew me to Mick beyond the sexy hockey player persona was his Russian heritage. It was incorporated into many aspects of the story, from the food to his nickname for Solana, and gave more depth to his character. I also enjoyed reading about Solana’s Hispanic background and how each character respected where the other came from.
The relationship developed at a nice pace with both Solana and Mick having to come to terms with their feelings for each other in their own time. The only minor drawback from this story for me was that the problems in their relationship could have been avoided, but the growth of each character kept me engaged and turning pages.
Overall, it this was another enjoyable book, and I will continue to read Ms. Laurence’s work as I can always count on an appealing story.
Mikhail Petrovich is a NHL superstar and heir to the Petrovich vodka fortune when an injury causes his hockey dreams to end. Now he spends his time with random hookups and feelings sorry for himself.
Solana Warner has landed her dream job as a junior Marketing Executive at Petrovich vodka and is super excited for what the future has in store for her. But she quickly learns about work policies that are set in place for all the women workers to stay as far away from the Petrovich sons or lose their jobs.
When a house sitting job has Solana living next door to Mikhail she sees a different side of him but is the chance of losing her job worth the risk of maybe finding love? Will Solana tell Mikhail the truth or will he find out what she is hiding on his own?
I really enjoyed this book and although it wasn't as focused on hockey as I would have initially loved everything came together so well that I can over look it!
I liked Solana and how she did work hard to obtain her dreams and meeting Mickhail was not part of the plan but a chance encounter which led to more. Yet she was not a typical girl for him and did not cater to what he wanted which was super refreshing. But she also knew that she had a limited time to really figure out what she wanted and I think Mikhail really shocked her.
So my initial opinion of Mikhail was definitely not that high as you see him with his puck bunny and his attitude was so nonchalant after getting caught by Deke with his pants down. He felt sorry for himself and was between "worlds" and expectations that people had for him. He hated his dad but a lot of that was based on the fact that they had never talked about the past.
I loved the change in Mikhail with how both Solana and Deke challenged him to be a better person and really make an impact. I loved who he ended up coaching and how he sought help on communicating better.
The chemistry between Mikhail and Solana was through the roof and I loved the scene with Mikhail's Baba which did give us an indication what was going to happen.
Such a great book and maybe one day Deke will get a book of his own!
With all the hockey romances going around you would think that this is just another one and they are all the same. Well, this one is not like the others. Mick "The Czar" Petrovich is a hockey God and is every woman's dream man. Until a career ending injury has him wondering what is going to happen with the rest of his life. Right now he sleeps, eats, goes to rehab and spends a little time with a puck bunny, sometimes not even showering. He feels like his life is over. His best friend tries to get him to go out, do anything to get him out of his apartment. When he sees the beautiful blonde trying to go into the apartment next to his, he has to intervene and get to know her. Solana Werner has worked hard for the last six years to get to her dream job. Being part of the marketing team at Petrovich Vodka is where she wants to be. When her professor and mentor ask her to apartment sit and take care of her cat, Solana can't refuse. She doesn't know that "The Czar" lives next door. Being part of the Petrovich team, it means that lusting or even dating Mick is off limits. So she keeps her job a secret from Mick until the right time to tell him. While Mick and Solana grow closer, her job takes off. Can she keep up the lies and possibly lose Mick? Will she really lose her job by dating Mick? Can Mick forgive her when he learns the truth? Is there a future for them after the lies are revealed? I love everything Selena Laurence writes and this one did not disappoint. It has the right amount of sexy, pained alpha male and the perfect woman to keep him straight, even if she doesn't know he is what she needs. So if you haven't read anything from Selena yet, read this one, it is a standalone and you will enjoy it. Then read any of her series, they are great too. **I won a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review**
Mick and Selena story is so unconventional to the other hockey stories out there. There are usually alcohol .. puck bunnies .. not family business .. the nice girl next door and a spoiled cat. When Selena gets a call to house sit for her professor that got her her dream job she knew she couldn't say no. But when she runs into the next door neighbor she isn't sure she could put off his advances the first night when she realizes he is The Czar, the future of her perfect job where employees cannot fraternize with each other or the owners. Can she tell him she works for his dad or will she just try to push him away and let her feeling ps break her heart in two.
But what happens when Mick has the same feeling she is feeling but has never felt anything like this before and he is unsure if how to handle it. She isn't a puck bunny, she is something different .. something real and since he doesn't have professional ice hockey anymore he is unsure of how to handle this and handle his career. He doesn't want to go into the family business but can he make his father see and understand why ??
A lot of things have to be said and acted upon for both Solene and Mick before they can move on but can one lie stand between them ?? Did Mick's Baba say Solena has to come clean before the lie hurts them both since they are both confused.
The excitement in this book is off the charts !! Meeting a super star .. working at your first choice job since you were younger .. finding your way in the world with out the job you thought you would have forever because of an injury .. falling for the girl next door !! Hoping to see more of the team and family !! This book was FANTASTIC !!
I really loved the chemistry between Mick and Solana it was great, their dates so sweet what a totally lovely read. Sadly nothing this sweet comes easy there are many road blocks they must overcome before they can find that HAE. I loved the buildup of the romance how she shoots him down at first, doesn’t fall all over him like other women, when it does take off it really blast through with such emotions. Solana does her best to fight her attraction but something is just meant to be. The only issue is she needs to keep their relationship on the download what is one white lie….looks like it might be a lot. This was a wonderful emotional drama filled read that really pulls you in taking you away getting lost in others problems.
Ms. Laurence gives you a wonderful build up of her characters pulling the reader in giving a very entertaining read. The characters are delightful with issues which make them realistic and normal people you can relate to. The supporting characters add so much to the story line you are so going to love the crazy cat and what it brings to the story. What a fun read that makes you laugh out loud yet at times is so emotional that you just want to cry. What a delightful well balance story that gives the reader hours of entertainment. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. What a great start to what looks to be a wonderful delightful one. ******************
Not only is Selena Laurence the queen of rockstar romances-but she has quickly swayed me to proclaim that she is also the queen of hockey romances! My weakness is hot hockey players, and let me tell you-it's hard to write a not so cliche sports romance! Selena Laurence has proven herself and truly did an amazing job with this story! I absolutely hope we get more of these hockey stars' story! Mikhal has a career ending injury-and he's trying to find out what direction he's going to go in life now that he can't play hockey anymore. His life is thwarted sideways when he sees Solana house sitting his neighbors condo. He immediately wants to put more effort into this relationship-she's more than just a puck bunny. Little does he know-Solana has landed her dream job and Mikhal's father is her boss. There's a no fraternizing policy with the bosses' family- and Solana feels like she has to choose between work and someone she's falling in love with. As her secret is exposed, things spiral out of control and can leave her without two things that she has fallen in love with; her work and her boyfriend. Again-this book was simply out of this world amazing! I couldn't put it down. I hope to read more hockey romances from Selena in the future!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book.
OMG, I loved this book. Solana and Mick are two beautiful characters, who fall hopelessly in love with each other. They are, by in large, well adjusted people, so its just one simple lie... that has its own reasons for existing that causes them any trouble in this relationship.
I really fell in love with both the characters. Mick, despite being a buff and in my imagination large hockey player has a heart of gold. We first see that with Ambrose. Ambrose, also is worth a character shout out, because yeah, we've all met him before. Then we see it with Solana. Solana's growth comes in the form of recognizing that you can go after what you want professionally, but in balance with what you hope for personally.
This really is an amazing book, and if you loved anything by Selena Laurence, you will totally love this. (I should add that I'm not much of a hockey romance person, but this, loved it. LOVED IT. Read it folks. Read it please.
good book. fun sexy and sweet. mick is a hockey player millionaire playboy who losses his career because of an injury. solana is trying to make it in the marketing world and only wants to work for one company petrovich vodka, the same place mick does not want to end up working at, his family empire. So when they do meet she does not mention where she works for fear he will not want anything to do.with her, but she struggles daily feeling she can't have both love and job security. she has been left all her life and.making herself invaluable to the company guarantees that they can never leave her. So they are both dealing with some issues, namely his career being over and trying to figure out how to live without playing hockey. together though they are solid and he shows her his super sweet side. which she cannot help falling more for. they have to deal with her secret when he finds out. it's a great read as usual by Selena.. hope we get dmitri's story as well.. I wouldn't mind a hockey series starting the deke
Selena Laurence's first hockey romance is a gem! Mick "The Czar" Petrovich loses his identity when a career ending hockey injury changes everything he thought about himself and sends him into a spin. Solana Warner only wants one thing in life: to have the job of her dreams as a junior marketing executive with Petrovich Vodka. But Solana soon discovers that her dream job with Petrovich Vodka and a romantic relationship with The Czar can't be mixed, shaken or stirred, so what's a girl to do? Stick with everything she's ever wanted, or take a chance on having what her heart says she desperately needs? This hot and oh-so-sexy relationship gives a whole new perspective to the Cold War between Russia and the USA when Mick's sensitive heart and Solana's smoldering beauty heat up the pages of this deliciously wonderful and addictive romance. I read a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
I loved this escape with Mick and Solana. Mick is that sexy hockey player, alpha male that makes all your girly parts tingle but life has thrown him a curve ball. His hockey career has been taken away from him and now he’s lost, not sure what to do with himself. As he’s recuperating, Solana enters his life, a new neighbor that doesn’t fall for all of his sexy tricks. Solana has been driven her whole life to get that perfect career. Her world has been filled with everyone she loves leaving. Just as she starts her new career, she crosses paths with Mick, the son of her new boss. As she fights her attraction and the rules at work not to fraternize with family members but Mick makes it very hard. Throw in a crazy cat and you have a perfect storm for exciting and hot chemistry with a whole lot of drama. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
This book was so good and so much more than a hockey romance! I laughed, I cried, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think what I enjoyed the most was the author's ability to give a multi dimensional group of characters who have many plans and hopes for their futures. Mick aka The Czar is a former hockey player and the heir to a vodka corporation. Solana is his house sitting neighbor and a marketing executive who happens to work for his father's corporation. She doesn't want to get involved with a self absorbed ex hockey player. Not only is it against corporate rules but she has a plan and he's not a part of it. Well, you know the saying "The heart wants what the heart wants". It's a sweet and sexy ride for these two!
I don't think Selena can write a book I don't love! Now she writes a hockey romance and it's amazing! The Czar is a story about family, responsibilities, honestly, forgiveness, understanding and love. All the characters are so enjoyable - from family, to friends, players, co-workers even Ambrose, the cat. I loved them all. Mick and Solana's chemistry is off the charts. The attraction is so strong, but an omission of truth has they relationship anything but simple. This book had me laughing, swooning and crying. It's a steamy, sexy read! I know this is a standalone, but I would love to have more. ARC provided by author - this is a voluntary review
The Czar was a quick & entertaining read. I had a bit of a hard time with Solana's inability to just tell the truth when they met, but I really loved the back & forth banter between Solana & Mick. I especially loved that Mick didn't seem to have a problem admitting that he treated women indiscriminately. It was great to see him put some effort into a relationship, even offering friendship. His character development really had me pulling for things to work out to his benefit!
Selena Laurence is an auto-buy for me because she consistently delivers great characters! If you haven't read her books yet, I'm going to recommend that you add her to your TBR list!
