Catherine Greenall is an environmentalist, committed to using her writing to make a difference to the way people treat others, animals and the environment.

She gained a Master of Philosophy degree in Chemistry and turned to writing after a long career as a government scientist. A voracious reader, she always loved to write stories as a child and feels blessed to be able to spend more time writing now.

She is the author of an apocalyptic, visionary, science fiction trilogy. The first book ‘A Quirk of Destiny’ was awarded joint best book of 2013 by Green Living. The second book in the trilogy is 'Return to Gallanvaig' and the shocking final book is ‘Destiny of Light.’ The trilogy is based on actual science and imagines a world where toxic food has caused a deadly disease, where there are corrupt power systems and mutants with strange powers caused by the sickness. This trilogy was written as a warning about the potential dangers in our food and how this situation has been allowed to flourish. You can watch the trailer for the trilogy in the Author Updates section.

In the prehistory you come to know what's going on in Burnview house with a look into its past. In the first longer episode you follow an artist who bought the house. She is flabbergasted when she reads in the library that her house formerly was an lunatic asylum accomodating all lunatics from Glasgow. The artist feels persecuted by some hidden evil. Will there be harm done to her? In the last episode a new family is moving in and threatened by a black dog at night. All the ingredients for a haunted house story here. A bit short but nevertheless very readable.

This story did not work for me. It is quite short and I don't know if the author had a word limit. From the description, it looks like it is a story from her early writing career when she was experimenting with different styles. That makes sense.

There is a cottage haunted by the spirit of a mental asylum patient (the cottage was built on its ruins.) The backstory consists of two short pages, then we have the tale of one of its modern day tenants. The jumps in time period felt disjointed. I will say that the story did stick with me for a while. I had a hard time falling asleep thinking about it, but it was an unpleasant rather than satisfying feeling. I didn't feel invested in the tenant either. This may work as a "jump scare," but less as a well-rounded ghost story.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
