Clarence: The Story of an Italian Boy with Big Ears and Big Problems

Rate this book
Clarence is the story of an Italian boy who doesn't look like the rest of his dark-haired, dark-skinned family. He is quiet and shy and cannot understand why his family is so loud! Most of all, Clarence feels left out at school because the kids tease him about his big ears. They bully him and taunt him because he doesn't look like the rest of them, or so they think! This story reflects the feelings we all can have when we don't think we fit in. It demonstrates that with a little "reflection" we can all discover that we are beautifully and wonderfully made!

Clarence by Stephanie Baruffi

A little about the Story:
Clarence is about a boy who is different from his family in looks and demeanor. He is being bullied because he is different but soon learns that being different isn't a bad thing and differences can be resolved amongst classmates and family members.

Pros:
Zander Liked this story because it gives you a lesson in life. That even though people are different, you can still be friends.

Virginia liked this story because with Clarence being bullied, it taught him how not to treat others. He knew how it felt so he treated others with kindness. He also had a wonderful grandmother who taught him how to see himself.

Elyssa liked this story for the meaning it holds. Things like this happen in real life as well and children can learn from this story.

Cons:
Zander and Virginia did not find anything they didn't like about Clarence, while Elyssa only wished it was more descriptive.

My Thoughts and Rating:
I absolutely loved reading this story to my children and getting their feedback on it. Hearing what they were able to take from it, warms my heart. We need more stories like these to help our children learn and grow. i also loved that in doing so, they were able to help me write this review. An Adults perspective is so different from a child's in most cases. I'm glad we were all on this same page with This Story.

I highly recommend this book be one you read with your children, and my kids agree.

Clarence is a wonderful book that tells the story of a young boy from an Italian family who is a little different and has to deal with bullying from other kids. The book handles the subject matter realistically and in a heart warming manner that charms the reader and allows them to sympathize with the hero Clarence. Peppered through the book are many Italian references and are glossary in the back to explain what they mean.
A fantastic book which I would recommend as reading for any child!

A great book about self-acceptance and seeing things from a new perspective, as well as a strong stand against bullying. I loved seeing all the similarities between Clarence's big Italian family and my own!
