The bestselling, groundbreaking Origin series continues with Transcend. Women are disappearing in New City, and the Corporate Army assigns their best soldiers to the case. In a world still recovering from war and death, every woman is needed for the survival of the human race.
Mina Kramer is a socialite in New City. She smiles for her father’s business associates, laughs at all their jokes, and acts the perfect daughter. When she’s suddenly abducted from a party at Baker Corporation, her whole world turns sideways. The kidnappers aren’t asking for her family’s money, the one item her parents have plenty of. With only confusion and captivity in her future, she prays for a rescue by her parents.
Except her saviors come in the form of the all-power Mr. Finn Baker and Poppy Carvene, a tiny sprite of a woman. And they don’t return her to her parents. Mr. Baker decides he wants to keep her and use her as bait to flush out the kidnappers’ leader.
Mina must push her fears aside or dive deeper into them. Does she want to run to her parents, who are safe? Or will she transcend to a woman who fights criminals bent on destroying New City? And can she overcome her startling feelings for the sexy Mr. Baker, a man who harbors secrets of his own?
New York Times bestselling author and award-winner, Scarlett Dawn, is the mastermind behind the Forever Evermore fantasy series, the Origin paranormal dystopian stories, the Vampire Crown paranormal romance thrillers, the Mark science fantasy saga, and the Lion Security contemporary romance series.
She lives in the Midwest, adores her music loud, and demands her fries covered in melted cheese.
As the second book in this series I expected glimpses of the two main characters from the previous book, more information on the world this story takes place in, and of course a wonderful story about Finn and Mina. I got so much more than that! This book has so many twists and unexpected moments! I could not put it down.
I really love Mina's character. She's not the badass, ass kicking heroine Scarlett Dawn usually writes but she's still strong in her own way. Her intelligence and wit come across clearly but with her vulnerabilities she's a very believable and loveable character. I absolutely adore that fact that she's not always strong. There's no putting on a brave face all the time. She has her insecurities and fears and she embraces them. I think Finn, with his playful and protective demeanor, is her perfect match.
The other part that I really loved about this book is that it wasn't insta love or insta mate. The fact that there was a very clear progression of feelings between the two is one of the things that makes this book truly amazing.
In the first book in this series I really loved Cassanders character but in this book I have to say that Rune replaced him as my favorite. I cannot wait for the next book!
This was... NOT what I was expecting. I'm actually pretty confused about everything that happened in this book. I LOVED Trigger, so my excitement for Transcend was out of this world, but I'm pretty disappointed with the direction the story went in this sequel. Poppy was one of my favorite heroines ever in Trigger, but she turned out so different as a character in Transcend, and not in a good way. And don't even get me started on Godric. I did love Finn and Mina's love story, and I'm SO excited for Theron (pleasepleaseplease have him end up with !!!) But besides that, I can't say that I loved anything else. The storytelling was choppy, the dialogue was awkward, the book was too short... this did not live up to my Trigger standards. I can only hope that book 3 will be better (and longer)!!
That whistling sound you hear when you are reading this.... it's this series falling off a very high five star cliff and crashing and burning into DNF one star territory. To say I was disappointed with book 2 can not cover the sheer kick in the gut this was - especially after the marvellous Poppy and her extremely satisfying adventures in book 1. To be fair - I have currently been only able to get to the 40% mark - but you know when you start yelling at your kindle that it's time to pull the plug. Let's start with the writing. The choppy sentences did no one any favours. There was a weird try at being a first POV narrative that also jangled on my nerves. And several times I had to re-read a sentence, questioning the authors word choice, wondering if there wasn't a substitute/spelling error mistake. The flow of dialogue was just wrong and too often failed to flow or even sometimes make sense. Then there was the very long casual conversation at one point where Finn is supposed to be fighting off killer golems and yet he pauses and chats with Mina and Megan. It just made no sense. Which brings us to the characters - first off - way to kill off all my love for Poppy. Making her whiney and then having her spend 90% of the first half of the book passed out in a faint - WTF? Now let's move on to our leads - Finn makes Godric look deep and complex. Other than he's a white tiger and makes weapon... well, I have nothing. Whilst book one managed to get away with the lack of male lead development because Poppy was so darn awesome (that's in the past now, I have to let that go) Book 2 unfortunately has Mina and what a contrary mess she is. Beautiful and built, yes. But a dithering mess... monsters, monsters... even though she has to admit their government has been one of the most peaceful and civilised ever. Dither, stumble, be clumsy, smell Finn, oh me like, but he's a big bad monster. So I'll run away. Get kidnapped. Spill guts in weird choppy sentences to kidnapper. Get saved but have weird bursts of kick ass bravery interspersed with dithering - but I'm a history professor (at age 21... yeah right) so I'm really smart, even if I do say something wrong every other sentence. Suddenly I'm hot for Finn, pushing up my boobs and making all sorts of slutty promises - completely turn about face, and completely at odds with this character. Again WTF? I spent the first 30% of this book wrinkling my nose in horror - then at the 40% mark when I actually did yell at my kindle because Mina suddenly switched to vamp mode and promises to rock Finn's world - in the midst of a potentially deadly situation - I just had to switch this off and walk away. This was literally a kick in the gut. So sad, such a disappointment. I'm done.
Book 1 blew me away with its hotness & actions. Fast paced & a very unique plot.
Unfortunately, this was not the case in Book 2. I was NOT happy with this book at ALLLLLL! There were no surprises . Poppy from the 1st book Heroine now becomes a wimpy useless character. What the hell happened here? I guess the author was trying to build a new strong Heroine "Mina" in this book. But wasn't quite successful. How strong can a socialite be? Physically defo no. Mentally, a big yes. So mentally strong in a action type of story.... nah, doesn't work.
And the ending was just WHY WTF?!?!?! Maybe I'm just so used to HEA's. Ughhh..... Frustrasted. Unhappy. Goodbye!
I should love this book because it took me by surprise and I'm sad and angry. Yes, why???? Anyway during my reading and skip for the ending and I was sad... I should have wait. This book was so different but same style, same fascination, same liking. Even though, the protagonists cannot beat God and Poppy but they were who they were and more than quite enjoyable. Without this book it wouldn't be a story even my liking for the main characters didn't top the first book. This book was essential and pivotal. So pivotal that I'm lost at words because I expect something cheerful indeed it was an HEA but still. And there are 6 guys, 2 down and by reading this one would it be 4 more, 3 more or 5 more because there was a curse and the characters were just not supposed to.
Mina is adverse to violence & Finn can be bloodthirsty. How well matched could they possibly be? Turns out they're a perfect match. I really enjoyed the well adjusted Mina & her parents. Finn was fun in the first book & turned out to be a playful tiger in & out of bed. So why not 5 stars? Well...
This book changes everything. The strong willed, determined, & independent Poppy has those same fabulous traits turned against her in this story. The book's plot takes a surprising & unpopular (with me) twist. I should be loving this book bc it certainly wasn't predictable but it's only left me feeling uncertain. 4 stars
Side note I think this is the best cover art on the series thus far.
The best shifter series yet! It can't be explained. All the best part of shifter romances intensified. You have to read them for yourself. I love the fact that all the different shifters are such integral parts of each other's lives. I can't wait for the next books Black Panthers are some of the most beautiful, mysterious and intriguing creatures. Lots to work with 😍.
Less world building than book 1 but a straightforward romance. The bad guy makes appearances and a huge twist will knock you for a loop. Looking forward to the next in this series!
Earlier this year, I devoured Scarlett Dawn’s Trigger. As the first book in the Origin series, it really left me excited for more. Sadly, it took me a while to grab book two. In fact, it was only the mention of book four coming out next month that had me begging for my friend to let me use her Kindle Unlimited. I wanted to be up to date with the series, and I wanted to do in the moment.
Much like Trigger, I found Transcend to be a thoroughly addictive read. It was another story I completed in a single sitting, taking up only a couple of hours of my time. I kept telling myself I was going to put the book down, but such did not happen. I was pulled in, and I found myself constantly turning the pages.
Despite my addiction, my feelings are a little bit on the conflicted side. Some elements of the story I enjoyed more than the first book, other elements I enjoyed a lot less than the first book. Due to my level of addiction, however, I opted to give this second book a four-star rating. Like the first book, it was not perfect, however, I did enjoy it for the most part.
Transcend introduces us to a new female lead, a very different female lead character to the one introduced to us in Trigger. I wasn’t entirely sure about her at the start of the story, but she did grow on me as the story progressed. It gave the story a different experience to the first, taking us down a somewhat different route. Whilst the first book was all about doing something, this book was more about gathering the information. Both approaches are enjoyable in different ways, and I found myself rather enjoying the fact we got to see what was happening rather than being quite so stuck in the middle of it. That is not to say this is a passive book, merely that things are a lot less action based than in the first book.
Not that there is a lot of action in either of the first two books in this series. Whilst things are always happening, this series seems to focus more upon the romance elements of a paranormal romance book. I completely get such a thing, but I do feel like a bit more action needs to happen. I never really feel my heart pumping in the action scenes. In fact, the action scenes never stick in my mind like the romance scenes tend to.
Although I felt as though the action wasn’t all it could have been, I did enjoy how this book moved the story forward. It was a rather unexpected turn of events in this book, a turn of events many will not be pleased about, but it has left me super intrigued to see what comes next in the series. It is unclear how things will play out, and I cannot wait to find out more. I have ideas, of course, but I’m unwilling to make any guesses.
It should come as no surprise to find out I’m eager to dive into Torment. I’m hoping book three will provide some clues as to what we can expect for the rest of the series – if not, at least we’ll be digging deeper into the characters that are proving to be highly entertaining.
Even though we’re given insta-love stories, even though it’s not the most action-packed series in history, I am addicted. I need to know what comes next.
Tears...tears and tears and tears. I have tried so hard I couldn't see to finish the book for about five minutes. I am hoping and praying that this is a temporary thing and somehow things can get figured out to fix this horrible thing. Beyond this horrible or horribles, I loved this story. These two are so smoking hot together it's unreal. There is so much going on there and her strength is incredible inside and out. My poor Cass. The things he sees ugh I want things to be better for him so badly! Man I can't wait for the next book!
This felt like it was written by a different author than the first book. The characters felt completely different, and the protagonist was just dumb and selfish.
Spoilers ahead:
What in the world? If a seer warns you (and MORE) that the love of your life will die if you join him in battle, WHY WOULD YOU JOIN HIM IN BATTLE? The protagonist is so stupid and selfish. She makes poor decisions, and the death isn't even a good death that does the characters or story justice.
A return of many the characters you loved from the first origins book with a few new ones added bring a deeper level to the story. With the fun and witty banter Scarlet Dawn is known for you will enjoy Mina and Finns story. And wait for the hook at the end that will leave you wanting the next book.
This book has ALL THE FEELS!!! Transcend by Scarlett Dawn built me up and then gutted me. Following Trigger, the second book in the Origin series takes on a new couple while continuing the plot thread of the previous book. While I made no secret of my lack of interest in Trigger, I found myself engrossed in Transcend and fell in love with the characters and world Scarlett has created.
Mina is perhaps my favorite character in the series so far. She is a scholar, still young enough to not face the decision of marriage or army, and she’s had a formal upbringing which the author conveys with her odd, almost stilted dialect. It took some getting used to but I liked it. It helped to flesh the character out more. Mina is NOT a naive girl either. She is smart (remember scholar!!) and it doesn’t take much for her to figure things out.
One of my biggest complaints in Trigger was that while the reader knew about the shifters thanks to the blurb, the shifter aspect didn’t actually enter the story until past the midway point. Not the case with this book! It starts from the very beginning with a terrified Mina who witnessed the pack of shifters become animals when they didn’t know she was watching in the park. Mina is now terrified of these “monsters” as she has to interact with them. They are the corporate “kings” and she has no choice as her father is a wealthy, influential man invited to their parties. I liked this, it felt real to me as Poppy’s reaction in Trigger did not.
Then there is Finn, the white tiger and God’s best friend. He was one of my favorite characters in the last book and I loved getting to see him in this book. Like Mina, he has a formal air about him. He is very serious but also has a playful side, like the cat he becomes. He is kind and gentle with Mina and basically gives her everything she needs without her having to ask. He’s extremely intuitive when it comes to her and I have to say I may have fell in love with him just a little.
While obviously this is a paranormal romance with a dash of dystopia, the book also focuses on the overall series plot that was set up in Trigger. Something is happening, something is after Poppy and now Mina. There are those golems, clay men that come to life and then the mysterious “Master” behind them. Honestly it’s intriguing. Who is after them? Why? There are as many answers as there are questions in this book. And that ending?!?!?! It gutted me. I knew it was coming and it still gutted me.
Overall I enjoyed Transcend much more than its predecessor. Mina and Finn were believable as a couple. It wasn’t a lust then love situation as the author built up their friendship and mutual attraction before throwing them in bed together. I liked the sweet build up of romance between Mina and Finn. And even though the ending gutted me and threw me for a loop, I’m more than a little curious to see where the series is heading in Torment. PLUS if I’m right there will be at least 6 books because there are six aberrations….please say I’m right Scarlett Dawn! If you enjoy paranormal romance, I highly recommend this book. If you’re looking for more dystopia though, you might want to pass. There isn’t much on that front.
Side Note: While each book in this series can be read as a standalone, I don’t recommend it. I recommend reading in order so you don’t miss any of the world-building or the overall series plot.
I am simply in love with this series. At first i wasnt sure i was going to like this new series, but tudged my way through the first book and then waited patiently for the next. Now the next one is here and it was well worth the wait. It had all the things i like, laughing (Cass cracks me up), action, sex, crying, and love all wrapped up with shifters and good writing you cant go wrong 😁
So, the Transcend is the second book in the Origin series and, to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. Our main character Mina is aware of the existence of shifters due to accidentally witnessing men turning into animals one day. So, because she doesn't really understands what she saw, Mina considers shifters to be monsters and freaks of nature. A perfect example of hating something because you don't understand it. But her opinion starts to waver when those said monsters save her when she's kidnaped.
The whole story was confusing for me. First of all, the main characters. On the one hand, I liked how hopeful Finn was about the possibility of Mina being his mate, and Mina feeling the same way. I liked that they were fully committed toward each other. On the other hand, they met and then they were just together. There was no 'getting to know each other' period. But that all pales in comparison to the other event of the book. Poppy. I liked how she and Mina worked together and their training session was funny, but in this book Poppy doesn't look quite as badass anymore. She looked more like a fainting damsel than a smart and confident soldier. The plot. The whole book was one confusing mess to me, but especially so the ending. I didn't understand why Finn and Cass had to go all Jimble-Wamble-Boom on Poppy and I especially don't understand why the fuck she hadn't listened to Cass and his warnings. When he told her what will happened she was so blasé about it, it was infuriating. And Godric! Jesus, I never saw that coming and I don't understand why it had to happened. And now what? And Theron! God, I'd love to get my hands on that book.
So, in the end, I was left completely flabbergasted, but still wanting more.
This book fell flat compared to trigger. It took me a long time to warm up to Finns mate. I ended up liking her.
First off spoilers:
[spoiler/] Wtf was that?! theres no explanation on why she pushed the button. Why God is dead. They're supposed to be immortal, how does a bomb kill the king? It just plain doesn't make any sense, whatsoever. The whole story was very jumpy. No real depth. No character building. No explanations. Nada.
I don't understand how we went from Trigger to this.
There was for shadowing but it felt pushed, it didn't correspond with the world Scarlett crafted for us.
I'm at a loss for words.
I did not enjoy this book. It did make me interested in the development of other characters.
This book had no follow through.
So many questions and contridictions.
The king is immortal. They were ready to blow themselves up if plan 1 failed. Why does that now change? [\spoiler]
And honestly the procession of events didn't correlate.
Totally lost for words. I'm quite disappointed with this book and I know Scarlett could have done much better than this.
I wasn't sure I wanted to continue the series as I find that sometimes the first book is the best and they go down hill.
That was totally not the case. The characters are just as adorable in this book as they were in the first. I absolutely adore the guys. I mean Finn is just so... Ugh... I love him... But I love all the guys Cass again in just amazing. I still like God but not as much as the rest of the guys.
The plot is getting really interesting and the ending was magnificently horrible... I will be sitting up just to read the next book right frickin' now...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved it and hated it, so it is a fantastic book!! Loved the two main characters so much, the female was perfect the male was so funny! I can't wait for the next one.
If I could unread this book I would. I don't have anything nice to say about what the author did to the series and the characters.
*** spoilers***
I liked the first book and was excited for this one. I enjoyed the world/characters that she built in the first book and expected her to grow from there. In this book she did no world building and tore down the characters from the previous book. Poppy went from a strong capable character to a rash idiot. Finn got a know it all for a mate and God lost his soul. I'll give the next book a chance but I really wish I could forget what I read here.
I rated the first book in this series a 5 star read. To say I was disappointed in this one would be an understatement. The characters were bland. The plot was just about as bad. Throw those in with bad ending and u get this hot mess of a book. Doubt I'll continue series.
That was a weird ending. I will try book 3 as Megan was interesting here. But this book was all over the place story-wise. Plus how the FL was completely fine with her Mom removing the hands of sneak thief employee.

My Review: ✭✭✭✭ I hope you remember my review of Trigger, the first book in this series, back on May 31, 2017. Well, here's the second book in the series. And book three, Torment, will be out in September! Yay!
This is the second book in the Origin series. I reiterate that point because I feel having read it that you should read Trigger first to know most of the characters and understand the world. People like Godric King and his mate Poppy, his father Theron are from the first book. As are Cassander and Finn Baker.
Finn Baker really comes into his own in this book as it’s his turn to find his mate. The relationships in this whole group are interesting and mostly amusing. Finn and his new mate, Mina Kramer have an interesting relationship. And they must look spectacular together. He’s a very large, well-muscled man with a white military-style haircut and glacial blue eyes. She’s tall, well-endowed with sky blue eyes and long, platinum blond hair. He’s the head of Baker Corporation (weapons) and turns into a white tiger. She’s a history professor with an amazing memory and doesn’t know a thing about fighting because she's a rich socialite. But opposites do attract. And these two are definitely attracted.
This is a well-designed world, this dystopian Earth. It’s been devastated by a huge war and now this group of very rich men runs things. Godric and Theron will take turns being in charge overall, I guess, since Theron’s on vacation right now. Though that may change very soon. Baker’s in charge of weapons. Not weapons of mass destruction or attack weapons because those don’t exist anymore. Just weapons for self-defense. Each of the shifters in Godric’s circle is in charge of another element, like transportation or communications. Things run very smoothly under the shifter regime. It’s just that most people don’t know they are shifters.
Mina and Finn are hot together and are having a great time getting to know each other. He finds her adorable and amusing. She just can’t resist him, even if he is a monster. Just a prick of the finger will tell the whole story. And this is a story I can’t recommend strongly enough. So why didn’t I give it five stars? Well, if I have to go back and re-read something to understand it and still not be sure of what I’ve read, then I guess it’s not explained well enough for me. And because Poppy disappointed me. Get your copy and see what you think. Book three of the Origin series is due out in September 2017, Torment.
Really great book with its unexpected twists. Mina and Finn are so great I loved their story and how well matched they are. Can't wait for the next book.
