Alexis Alvarez writes romances - some are light-hearted contemporary romances; others delve into the exotic world of domination and submission.

Her female heroines are strong-willed women who are never push-overs, and who can hold their own in society and the workplace, but who are intrigued with the idea of kink and submission in the bedroom. Alexis writes with skill and poetry, creating worlds that are both dark and erotic and, at times, humorous and light.

Alexis is a writer, photographer, gourmet cook, former engineer, and mom. She likes other things besides BDSM fiction, and some of them include snorkeling, lemon bars, thunderstorms, and laughing so hard with her sisters and brother that her stomach hurts.

➳Alexis Alvarez has not only brought a sweet romantic love story, but also a story with a message that will emotional wreck you...

Shai, a therapist for kids has brought herself into a world filled with confusing emotions and uncertainty when facing Micheal and his sexy, dark father, Gabriel. She is not only one to fix the emotional aspects of Micheal after the psychological events that happened during his time so far, but she also has to deal with Gabriel's brooding ways of neglecting compassion with his son. She is also one to talk about, since she has a past of her own that has made her the person she is today and helps those kids who need her. Her scars not only hurt her in the past, but they also make her a strong person that not many can relate to. However, Alexis Alvarez has made it into a clear way for her readers to comprehend.

Once Gabriel stops with his past, he learns how to open up with Shai. When they do, DEAR GOODNESS! It is STEAMY! They can never get enough of each other, cause when they are together they have a powerful chemistry that is inseparable in every way. Alexis Alvarez knows how to write the steamy and well intimate scenes. She knows how to transfer from an emotionally hard scene, to a scene full of passion and love.

Overall, this was a love story that I can add to my favorites list because it deserves that said title. It is also a story that I recommend to anyone who is looking for a single father story, who is arrogant and also possessive over not only his emotions but the people whom he loves and adores.

❝ People in pain distance themselves from the ones who mean the most, as if to protect themselves from a future wound that hasn’t happened yet.❞

5 Stars!!!

I'm going to take a moment and praise Alexis Alvarez. My gosh the writing in this book was so phenomenal so exceptional and so ah-mazing!!!!!! This book was poetic, I can't even begin to fathom just how much I loved this book.

Shai, a successful child therapist is hired to help Gabriel's 10 year old son, Michael. Gabriel doesn't believe in therapy, but hopes it can help his son. Michael, after losing his mom years ago and overcoming cancer has only added to his behavioral and emotional issues. Shai wants nothing more than to help this little boy.

Shai and Michael's relationship was adorable. She does her best to help Michael with his issues. Honestly, there's nothing she wouldn't do, that's how close she's taken to him.

Shai slowly starts developing feelings for Gabriel, Michael's dad. She knows it's not professional and unethical for her to feel anything towards Gabriel. Though, sometimes it's just not that easy to turn-off said feelings. But, Michael is her first priority and that's just the way it has to be. Easier said then done because an attraction like Shai and Gabriel's can't easily be denied.

Gradually they both give-in to their feelings. It is so authentic and beautiful the way it is written. But, of course there are bumps and hurdles in their wake. They both have demons they have to-put-to-rest before they can fully commit to each other. And, boy do they have a lot of work ahead of them.

"Some sadnesses are so powerful that you simply can’t release them; you have to push them down hard, lock them away, and never let them out."

'A Handful of Fire' left me breathless. This book grabbed me and sucked me in. I devoured this story and these characters will not be soon forgotten. This book made me feel, oh did it ever. It was eloquent and just sensational. This my first book by Alexis that I've read and it most certainly won't be my last.

"Life goes on, and if you let it, beauty comes back, all by itself."

Alexa Alvarez is a new to us author with A Handful of Fire being our first taste of this very talented lady's work. The synopsis for this story grabbed us immediately and the story soon pulled us in. There is an intelligence and flair to this authors writing we really admired.

For a man in his early 30's, Gabriel Baystock has had his fair share of heartache and challenges. Losing his wife, nursing his 10 year old son through cancer, and trying to reconnect with him in remission has broken this man. Career and monetary wise, Gabriel is comfortable. He's successful and wealthy, yet emotionally, he's stilted finding it difficult to open his heart,

Ten year old Michael, Gabriel's son is a gifted genius. Michael is very aware of his illness, the possibility of the future and is quite wise beyond his years. No little boy should have gone through what he has at such a young age and Michael bears the emotional scars that come with that. Michael and Gabriel have drifted apart, unable to communicate, both carrying the pain of loss and uncertainty. Gabriel consumes himself in his work, shutting off emotionally to those around him. Michael's coping mechanism is to act out, become sullen, rude and basically doing anything for attention. Both Gabriel and Michael harbour their own fears, with the thought that he could possibly lose Michael terrifying him.

"Every single fucking time I look at him, I feel this incredible rush of love that's so powerful, it terrifies me. Because I can't lose him. If I lose him, I'm going to fucking fall apart, and I'll never come back together, and I can't let him see that."

Michael and Gabriel both need help, and it is here they meet Shai Bonaventura, the manager of Therapy Outreach. Shai is a caring and well-respected Therapist and the perfect person to connect with and help Michael and Gabriel find their way back to one another to reignite the father/son bond. However, an attraction develops between Gabriel and Shai which is off limits and forbidden, though neither can stave off the temptation for long.

"We're both scarred. We can heal each other."

For Shai this is an emotional and physical coupling, for Gabriel it is a physical release. Whilst he has feelings, he can't allow himself to bend to them, preferring to keep his heart caged tightly. Physically, these two are in sync. The sex between them was off the charts erotically charged, but trusting and submitting to his spiritual and emotional side is a turbulent journey neither is prepared for.

'I'm afraid that with Shai, I'll need to open up my heart in ways I'm not willing to do. Shai's not a surface kind of girl. I just don't know if I'm ready to have someone plumb the depths.'

Whilst Gabriel and Shai's relationship issues are an intense part of the story, we found the emotional pull as readers came from young Michael. It was this little boy who drove the story. It is through his pain, his little heart, his hopes and fears, his need for attention and love that we found the emotional crux of the story really hit us. Alexis Alvarez perfectly delved into the psychological part of Michael and Gabriel's emotional healing and the developing relationship between Shai and Gabriel, so we came to experience more depth of character. Her sensitive, pragmatic approach did sometimes feel a little text book but in no way did this impact the story which was beautifully, thoughtfully and intelligently conveyed.

"Love doesn't wait, Gabriel, for the right time. It just….comes."

We'll certainly be putting this author on our radar for future reading. Alexis Alvarez's, A Handful of Fire was a poignant and powerful piece of storytelling. Her words felt refreshing, passionate, tender, tempestuous and gripping.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this amazing book.

First I must say that I didn't expect this book to be so deep, emotional. It was such a serious book with serious issues that kept you anxious to turn the page to see what will happen next.

Shai is one of the best children therapist and she was hired by Gabriel to help his 10 year old son Michael whose cancer was in remission. Michael wasn't your typical 10 year old. He did calculus and had the vocabulary of a college student. He was also very observant and spoke his mind. Gabriel had no patience with his son outbursts and handle things very bad. Shai on the other hand never babied Michael and that instantly made him like her which was rare from him.

This story not only shows the hurt of a child and how he was handling his sickness it also showed how a single, widowed das was handling it also, which I must say I was disgusted with him during more than half of the book, and how Shai helped both of them. Shai had things in her past that she never let interfere with her work.

Michael and Shai developed such a beautiful bond that others saw as her crossing the boundaries of professionalism but she was getting too attached and so was Michael and Gabriel.

There was a misunderstanding that caused a rift between Gabriel and Shai and I must say that I HATED how he tried handling losing her and at times I couldn't believe he was a rich, educated man with the stupid decisions that he made and how he was easily manipulated by selfish people.

Like every good story things were straighten out after the most emotional heart to heart that I've read in a long time. And Michael, ❤️ Shai did an awesome job with him. What made this story so believable was that absolutely nothing was rushed and it showed Michael's growth as well as setbacks.

Emotional and beautifully written! A Handful of Fire is a must read, I was swept away, a sweet romantic love story that would break and melt your heart, all wrapped up with a soul-searching vibe, delivering a beautiful message of strength and courage.

This was my first book from Alexis Alvarez, and oh my I think I have a crush on this author.  All the freaking feels. A taboo relationship, between a child therapist and her father’s patient. And so much more.

From the blurb, you can imagine how emotional that story will be. It was an incredible journey, with relevant psychological aspects, reading about shattering souls, loss, and especially healing. It intrigued me. Heartbreaking and Heartwarming. My emotions were all over the place.

Shai is a renowned child therapist, she had scars that haven’t healed yet. A fixer that needed fixing. Her salvation was to help children and she did it great. The special touch that could convince the reticent ones. Like she did with Gabriel. Healed his son’s progressively and also his heart and soul. Enthusiastic, solar and very patient, capable to soothe, to win over people.

Gabriel … hot and broody. Dark and cold-hearted. Emotionally detached when it comes to relationship. He and his boy, Michael, won me over. Literally. What didn’t help first is their crazy and undeniable chemistry, almost palpable. The heart wants what it wants and as the story unfold, even of that fantastic and natural relationship (of course mind-blowing) is going to explode, not in a great way.

My special mention goes to Michael. Not  because he is a kid but about his vision of life, something innocent but also so mature, with an depicting reality, filled with so much truth. My heart was melting with that special boy.

A Handful of Fire is the kind of book that filled your heart with so many emotions, from laughter to sadness, almost leaving the reader heartbroken. That kind of book that will heal your heart at the same time as the characters; the one that made you live the story with all your heart. Don’t be afraid of the journey, so worth the read.  This book got it all; from the storyline to the characters, the kind of perfectly imperfect.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I oftentimes find that the more I enjoyed the book and admire the author, the harder it is to gather my thoughts and write a review. I worry that I can never show my appreciation for the story or convey my emotions for the characters. There hasn't been a single book by Alexis Alvarez that I have read that I haven't fallen in love with in every way, they are always steamy and have varying degrees of kinky, and the characters speak to me. A Handful of Fire had a completely different feel and left me a little battered and bruised emotionally and totally enamored with Gabriel, Shai, and Michael. Gabe and Shai knew how to keep things hot with dirty talk and sexy action, but they also had my heart melting like ice cream on a summer day.

Gabriel Baystock takes broody and hot to a whole new level. To say that he has been given the short end of the stick in life is an understatement. I wanted to wrap myself around this cold, surly man who believes that nothing can come from opening up about your life and sharing your thoughts in therapy. But have no fear, it takes him awhile but he is no match for the sunny disposition, soft hearted, practical Shai.

If Gabriel wasn't enough to tug on my heart strings, Alexis created the most inquisitive, funny, endearing, sad, and intellectual ten year old boy that fiction has ever seen. I wanted to help him in every way possible and he brought the maternal instincts out in full force. Michael Baystock was more than my heart could handle even when he was at his worst, I still loved him in the fiercest way possible.

Shai Bonaventura is exactly what the doctor ordered when it comes to the two Baystock gentlemen. She may be there to help Michael cope with his past illness and loss in his life but she will end up being so much more to both of these beautiful men who need some sunshine. Shai's big heart, wit, and shroud of mystery won me over and had me singing her praises early on in her story. I couldn't get enough of her wealth of knowledge about all things about children, death, music, and art and wanted to dig deep and learn more about her with every page.

Alexis Alvarez delivers a love story about not only passion, but loss, survival, and moving on. She pays homage to the adage that it is better to have lost than never to have loved at all. She teaches her readers that after tragedy, we shouldn't close ourselves off in hopes that we will never lose again but open ourselves up to a whole new world of possibilities. I highly recommend A Handful of Fire for a read that will inspire and resonate within your soul. Alexis thank you so much for creating something so vivid, poignant, and profound that shows us that we may not sparkle like a gem but we all have magical powers inside of us that is able to spark and become a beautiful flame.

Personal Thoughts:

"Every single fucking time I look at him, I feel this incredible rush of love that's so powerful, it terrifies me. Because I can't lose him. If I lose him, I'm going to fucking fall apart, and I'll never come back together, and I can't let him see that."

Michael is the most precious thing in Gabriel Baystock's life

In order to help his son recover from the trauma of being a cancer patient so young, he hires child therapist Shai Bonaventura that soon falls for both father and son.

Shai's past is full of secrets and her relationship with this family of two might not be strong enough yet to withstand their weight.

Unfortunately I couldn't get passed the 50% mark.

BIG FAT DNF

I don't know why I'm bumping into so many books where the author thinks it's a great idea to add another woman for the hero into the mix.

I'm fine with multiple partners in erotica but when I want a romance with a good plot?
NO. Just NO.

Those who've read some of my reviews before know that I HATE serious OW drama.

Here the "hero" has a fuck buddy and he keeps on being with her even when he knows he feels something deeper for the heroine.
WHY?

Because he needs "a release" and the fuck buddy is a great fuck.

Even if she's horrible with his kid and his kid hates her.

Even if his son has issues and clearly doesn't need his father's fuck buddy around to make his coping with his illness and the loss of his mother even harder.

THIS IS ME AT THIS POINT OF THE STORY ↓
maaaad!
I just can't accept the hero's need for "release" as reason enough to:
1) Have that woman into his kid's life after all that boy had to go through.
2) Stay with her even when he realizes he wants the "heroine".

Obviously I didn't enjoy it.

I wished some reviewer had given a bit of more useful informations instead of just gushing about this book!

Of course...If you don't have issues with OW drama, you might actually enjoy this story.

I LOVED Michael and how he opens up with Shai.
Steamy sex scenes aside, Micheal and his journey was the only thing I truly enjoyed about this book.

Bravo Alexis Alvarez....This was Brilliantly Beautiful!

This was my first Alexis Alvarez read. I can honestly say; it won't be my last.
I truly didn't know what to expect from the title and cover art. A few book friends had the pleasure of reading an ARC of the book and told me it was a must for me. When someone tells me I need tissues though...well I tend to hesitate, but I ugly cried through the emotion this story provoked from me and I'm so happy I did.

Okay, okay...the story-line you ask?
Shai is a successful and passionate Child Therapist who takes on 10 year old Michael, a cancer survivor. She's very excited to work with Michael, and even more excited when she meets his father, Gabriel Baystock. Gabriel can be a bitter man because of his past, yet when he meets Shai he softens up a bit for the love of his son, the memory of his deceased wife, and the intense sexual attraction he has with Shai.

Both Shai and Gabriel have troubled past that they need to conquer enable to move forward. The story flows seamlessly through and if you're like me you'll find yourself up all night trying to read the entire book.

I don't feel like I'm doing the author or the storyline any justice with such a brief review. All I can say is I enjoy reading a book that an author has given so much of their soul and time to creating. The first few pages alone captivated me with a poem about jewels to flint and a dedication to the memory of a couple's son.

The time in researching how a Child Therapist ticks to how children might really think and feel about having cancer is amazing to me. Don't think that this is all doom and gloom...IT ISN'T!

The sex is off the charts sexy and a little dominating. Both Shai and Gabriel know what they want from one another, yet don't want to break a client/parent code of work ethics.

So, no spoilers from me. PLEASE JUST PICK UP THIS HOT READ!

Thank you Alexis for sharing your amazing talent with us all!

I have always been fascinated by the whole idea of being a therapist; of understanding what was going on in people minds and somehow knowing the best way to help them talk about it and overcome any obstacles that keep them from living their best lives. Having recently lost my father to Cancer, the idea of reading about a therapist who specializes in children who have, or are in remission from it really made me want to jump right into this. Throw in the taboo aspect of that same therapist engaging in a relationship with one of her patient's fathers and I'm completely sold.

I expected this story to break my heart a little bit, I didn't expect it to ignite all these various emotions that I can't even seem to verbalize effectively right now.

This book was so much more than just a romance between Shai and Gabriel. It was the heartbreaking reality of a grieving father trying deal with the emotions and love for his son who he came so close to losing. It's a tale of a brilliant, witty and sometimes angry ten year-old boy, Michael, and how a disease made him grow up so quickly. It's about breaking and healing, of loving and forgiving, and about acceptance, growth and letting go.

I feel like I'm not giving you much as far as character explanation and plot line information but I truly feel like this is a book you need to go into pretty blindly. Alexis Alvarez did a great job of pulling me into the story and making these characters so believable and relatable that I had to stop reading at times I collect myself. When I mentioned to her that I could tell she was going to break my heart, she agreed but promised that she'd put it back together again. I can verify her promise to you. If you can just spare a couple of hours of your heart to Michael, Shai and Gabriel, I promise that it will be worth it in the end.

"I'm starting to think they're not real. Nothing is real anymore. Just cancer. Stupid, dumb cancer and thinking about cancer and worrying about cancer. That's real."

No amount of money and power can save the life of a child with cancer. Nor can it make you happy when at any time in your life, cancer could consume the life you once had.

 photo PicsArt_04-23-08.43.43_zpsj9qynj6j.jpg

Gabriel knows this all to well. After losing his wife in a car accident his life is shattered again when his son is diagnosed with cancer. After battling this horrible disease, his son Michael is in remission but cancer has left it's dirty marks. His son is a changed boy and nothing he does to help Michael makes their lives better.

Michael is bitter and confused and just wants his normal life back. He has survived the test of his life but he doesn't know how to handle the emotional side of cancer. The side that no one understands.

Until Shai comes into their lives....

 photo 157c8faf-d1b3-4f97-ac5e-822f3b140d1b_zpsxsqgqnm1.jpg

Shai's life has been anything but amazing. Living with the secrets of her childhood and dealing with cancer, she knows her goal in life is to help other children understand the feelings they have when dealing with cancer.

Shai is amazing at her job but she knows to never get attached to the families she works with until Michael and his father Gabriel need her help.

This story is an emotional read of how the effects of cancer are just not physical. Cancer effects the lives of everyone involved in more ways than ever expected.

I truly enjoyed this heart string puller.

Thank you Miss Alvarez....this was good!

Alexis Alvarez blew me away with A Handful Of Fire. I'm well acquainted with her work and love everything she writes. One of the things I admire is that she isn't afraid to mix it up, write outside of the box, give us characters we didn’t know we wanted to read about.
This book is one of those outsides of the box jewels that is nothing short of a masterpiece. This story is so compelling, so beautiful, so heart-wrenching, and so damn well-written that you absolutely must experience it for yourself. I was swept away by the vivid emotions the characters evoked in me.
Michael not only stole my heart, he stole the show with his sage-like observations and understanding of life. His intelligence, wit and bravery are fabulously entertaining and revealing of the ten-year-old boy that he is, yet the level of suffering and loss he has encountered surpasses that of most adults.
Shai knows exactly what Michael is going through. She has first-hand knowledge, which is one of the reasons she is a successful therapist. But, for all of her success at healing others, she hasn’t given herself permission to move on from her own tragedy. As fate would have it, Michael and his father, Gabriel, are Shai’s guides to that destination.
In case you were worried, Ms. Alvarez hasn't neglected to include her signature sizzle between the hero and heroine. But honestly...I was so engrossed in the therapy dynamic between Shai and young Michael, the expertise with which she handled him and even his father, that there could have been zero sizzle and I would have still loved every word of this wonderful book.

A Handful of Fire by Alexis Alvarez is an stand-alone romance with no cliffhangers and a beautiful HEA.

Meet Shai Bonaventura and Gabriel Baystock. Both are in their thirties.
Shai is a successful child therapist and single. She lives and breathes for her patients.
Gabriel is a businessman, rich, widowed and has a 10 year old son-Michael.
Shai is hired to help Michael after his cancer treatment. She works with him in therapy.
Michael is a lonely, frightened genius boy with issues.
She has issues in herself and her crush on Gabriel doesn´t help either. But they have this crazy chemistry.
Then a so called secret is revealed and Gabriel flipps out. He´s so Arrrgh, I was so angry at him, with his denial. Shai is devastated and Michael´s world crumbles too, again.
All main characters have scars visible and invisible.

This book gutted me. It´s a heartwrenchingly, beautiful story about love, pain, loss and acceptance.
I loved the characters and I loved Alexis Alvarez´s writing. I laughed, I cried and I suffered with the characters.

I wish I could give more than 5 Stars. Thank you Alexis Alvarez !

I enjoyed this story. I was rooting for Shai and the boy, Michael, from the beginning. It took me a little while to warm up to Gabe. It helped to have some chapters from his own POV.
They were all dealing with some difficult situations and there were parts of the story I had to have some tissues handy.

I was given the privilege of reading this arc A Handful Of Fire by Alexis Alvarez.
I had no idea what to expect & just wow........
she left me speechless.
It's a powerful & very moving story of how people can come together through terrible circumstances & yet still feel love, hope & happiness.
This book took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions that had me laughing in parts & then having to stop reading altogether because I was no longer able to read the words on the pages through my tears.
My heart was physically aching.
Alexis has absolutely nailed this story & I can't wait for you all to be able to read this incredible book.
Congratulations Alexis

Alexis Alvarez’s A Handful of Fire touched me in so many ways. I was left straight up speechless and emotionally overwhelmed by how deeply this novel stirred and melted my heart. At the same time, when I flipped the last page I was thoroughly satisfied and profoundly affected by this story about opening oneself up to a love that blossoms while discovering long-lost secrets and the fall out that occurs when passions collide amidst circumstances that are filled with pain.

This story about Shai, a respected child therapist and her attraction to her patient’s father Gabriel tore me UP!!!!!! A Handful of Fire had me riveted one minute and thoroughly enthralled the next at the same time that it left me shaken, heartbroken and in no-holds barred CRAZY love with this book!

Make no mistake about it: Alexis Alvarez has a tremendous success on her hands with A Handful of Fire!!! She made me FEEL so much joy at the same time that I wanted to weep with angst while I was reading. I cringed, I cried, I gasped in incredulity and I shook my head in anger at the some of the events in this book!!!

YES, I rejoiced when emotional barriers crumbled and I reveled in the passionate relationship that wholeheartedly developed between Gabriel and Shai. I was 100% all in and completely invested in these characters! Through this author’s words, I wanted to witness every single one of these characters reach their ultimate potential and learn to embody the essence of being young, wild and free in spite of their previous trials, difficulties and tribulations.

A Handful of Fire is about learning how to overcome obstacles, embrace new experiences and follow the heart when life’s disappointments arise and seemingly insurmountable roadblocks present themselves. It is about hope, surviving loss and the kind of emotional growth that will blow your mind at the same time that it uplifts your spirit.

In short, I was blown away by Alexis Alvarez and the significance of what she has done with her new release!!!! A Handful of Fire is glaring sunshine, tumultuous rain and everything in between!!! It will rip you apart at the same time that the power of this author’s writing reassembles your mind, body and soul while leaving your heart beating wildly inside of your chest !!!

There are so many life lessons in this novel that I do not even know where to begin, but trust me when I say that every.single.word. of this novel will result in a lesson that is very well learned!!!

So read it!

That is this Naughty Girl’s final word.

Ratings: For me, there are no ratings necessary for this book. It is Moving, Motivational, Masterful and just plain powerful in its delivery. Is it HOT? OF COURSE!!!! Why else would a naughty girl like myself keep reading it???!!!! *wink*

This is one of those books that will grab you and won’t let go, even after you read it. It will stay with you, its that good. The emotions in this book are deep, there is a lot of angst but it isn’t too much, just enough to move with the story-- It was such a serious book with serious issues , that you keep reading because the story draws you in, the characters have you so invested. I loved every moment and hated when the book ended.
Shai is one, if not , the best children therapist around and she was hired by Gabriel to his bitter and angry 10 year old son Michael whose cancer is in remission. Michael is one super smart kid, he did calculus and had the vocabulary of a college student. Gabriel really , in the beginning had no patience with his son’s outbursts or language with his father and there was a lot of friction between them until Shai comes into their lives. Michael connects with her and she is able to instantly get to him whereas Gabriel isn’t at this point. She is trying to help them both reconnect and help Michael with whatever is causing him pain and issues which also might help Gabriel with why he has no patience with his own son.
This story shows not only the pain of the son but the pain of the father and the anger and angst that comes out of that. At times I DIDN’T LIKE Gabriel-he acted like a spoiled child whereas Michael acted more grown up. Shai helped both of them with their issues but Shai had things in her past that she never let interfere with her work. Michael and Shai developed such a beautiful bond that others saw and immediately jumped to her crossing boundaries and tried to get her off Michael’s case, which hurt Shai. She tried to pull back but she was so intertwined with both father and son, she couldn’t. She was too attached and it was hard to pull away until a misunderstanding caused a rift between Gabriel and Shai and there was a time that they didn’t talk. I was soooooo angry at Gabriel. Does he repair that rift or will he pull up his big boy pants and repair that most real relationship he has had since his wife’s death?
This is one beautiful and complex romance story that has several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. If you love romance stories like this, you will adore this book, like I did.

My rating: 4.8 stars ****

How to start this review? I honestly have no idea how I will recuperate from this.. I will certainly have quite the book hangover.
Gabriel, Michael and Shai are three characters who have wound their way into my heart and I can't imagine them ever not being there. Three souls, so utterly broken and splintered, and on a journey to mend one another.

Of course there is romance, and yes, there is the forbidden story of psychiatrist and patient's father.. which is lovely and frustrating and spark-igniting and infuriating and loving and sweet and passionate and all the other amazing things a true slow-burn relationship can be. But it feels almost secondary to the immensity of the situation and the demons all three of them have to overcome along the way. Michael, the poor 10 year old, who has lost his mother, battled cancer and thus lost his father to his work, Gabriel, who has lost his wife, has seen his son through cancer and is afraid of more loss tearing him apart and Shai who has her own demons from the past and tries to compensate for them by throwing herself into helping others. Their journey in helping one and ending up helping all is truly unique, filled with love and set backs and you cannot help but feel drawn in.

The way Shai opens up this broken family is simply beautiful. The author wrote their story with dignity, with a realness, not leaving out the ugly parts. The story is tender, and leaves you utterly raw. All I wanted to do is get a hug afterwards, and I suggest not reading this in a crowded place.. a) tears.. b) some seriously steamy scenes.

And I have to say, one of my favorite moments is near the end, in a story where over and over we are shown how important words are, this incident was utterly sweet, and nothing more than I could have hoped for, especially in the scheme of all that had happened before.

I absolutely adore Michael, he is the star of the show, in my opinion, his intuition, his compassion, once exhibited is unmatched, and so absolutely endearing. I wouldn't mind seeing more of him.
If you don't mind crying a little, you absolutely NEED to grab this book. The story won't leave you alone, it is absolutely beautiful, tender, endearing and it made my heart swell like no other.

This is definitely not your typical romance novel. Child therapist Shai starts working with Michael, a pediatric cancer patient who is now in remission but is having some serious emotional issues. His father Gabriel is soft on the eyes but a distant, controlling businessman type. Of course, Gabriel and Shai have a natural attraction to each other, but Shai is his child's counselor and has boundaries that she should keep--- but oversteps a lot. Watching the brilliant but angry and lost Michael play up against his new therapist and his father whose priorities are clearly elsewhere was interesting and an unexpected surprise.

Alvarez weaves in random facts about things from poetry to opera to gemstones as part of the banter and to parallel the growth of the characters, which I found to be effective and interesting. The characters- two adults who are grieving and both really need counseling and an angry kid- are not your typical romance fodder, and I appreciate Alvarez's inclusion of them in the book. She dealt with some pretty heavy issues, but at no point did it feel heavy or overwhelming as a reader. As someone who has worked in psych, I did feel very uncomfortable to the point of cringing as Shai crossed professional boundaries several times (I really wanted to shake her), but I'm sure that was intentional on the author's part. The chemistry between the characters was natural, and the little boy was as important as the adults, which was both honest and appropriate.

Another unique and interesting read from Alvarez, whose books make you think without realizing it at the time.

Powerful themes, powerful emotions, powerful truths, powerful pain, powerful forgiveness. I went into this book blind, letting all the powerful words wash over me, knock me sideways, pull me down-then push me back up, gasping. Reading this book left me with the kind of powerful emotions I feel when I listen to a classical movement of music, gaze at a great masterpiece of art, or read a beautiful poem.
This is the story of Gabriel, a widowed father to a sick boy; and Shai, an empathetic therapist hired to bring Gabriel and Michael back to each other-to heal the emotional wreckage their life had become.
I could go on and on about how Gabriel is damaged as much as his son, or how much light and fire and truth Shai brings into their lives; or how the forbidden sparks between therapist and patient’s father took my breath away. Instead I’ll just say buy this book, because I don’t have the vocabulary to emphasize how much I loved this book.

I was surprisingly shocked at how deep this story was. There were these little gems that Shai had that were amazing when dealing with her patients. I really liked the way she worked with Michael. I did enjoy her relationship with Gabriel, but at times I found him to be such a jerk…but that was the point. I’m glad that Shai was able to help not only Michael, but also Gabriel and her back story was not what I expected at all.

I have to add that I know Barb, Mark and little Ben that is mentioned in the dedication and knowing this story was a bit inspired by him added a bit of extra emotion as I read the story.

I was given this ARC for an honest review and honestly, I would have paid to read this.

The writing is in both Shai and Gabriel's POV that way we see both desires and hopes. This is definitely a HEA.

It's a story of Shai, a child therapist, who is given the opportunity to work with Michael, a child who is overcoming pleuropulmonary blastoma with a genius IQ but difficult emotional issues. If she can convince his father, one of the richest bachelors in Chicago, that therapy can work then he will donate to her program to help provide free therapy for qualifying families, then others might follow suit.

Gabriel has power, money and a son that makes him happy but also fears of losing. He already lost his wife to cancer and then his son than got sick. He won't allow himself to find love, in fear he will lose it again to sickness.

Shai has seen sickness and death and she threw herself into her work to help children with sickness and death in their lives. She is falling for her one of her patients father and breaking all her own rules and ethics.

Both Shai and Gabriel come together for Michael to help turn his mental attitude around but then find themselves drawing closer and closer to the other and then rules get broken, secrets are discovered, emotions are exploding and therapy and their interactions end.

I loved the interactions with Shai and the son, Michael. I found him to be so amusing and adorable.
I also found the hot sexy interactions with Shai and Gabriel to be steamy and pulse racing.

Alexis can write great characters and panty soaking sex scenes! She writes with so much description and details you would think that she was a professional... ohhh... did you think I meant prostitute? I meant as a therapist. She gave so much advice and insight that I found myself nodding and think how I can apply this to my life and my children.

Besides the typical back and forth breaking up and the hidden secrets because it would ruin the relationship, I found this to be an extremely interesting and beautifully crafted story of love of a child and of a profession while trying to keep the two separate.

"Being with you maybe know how to make my life whole again… ...How to be happy. But I got scared, because it was too good. I was terrified that if I embraced it, and lost it, I wouldn't survive."

Ahhh holy hot FILF. OOOO.

This story is out Shai who is a therapist for children who are dealing with the after affects of going through treatment from cancer. She has been doing this her whole life and is amazing at it. Until one day she is assigned to work with a little boy named Michael who has just overcome cancer and has lost his mother as well several years ago. With so much pain in his heart Shai eventually knows she needs to fulfill this job and be perfect at it. Then she meets the father. The handsome sexy as hell single dad, and window as well as a man who is very powerful. Gabriel.
They do everything they can to keep the heat between them cooled down I mean Gabriel even has a girlfriend. But when things start to get to intense and Shai starts falling more and more in love with this little boy she ends up falling more and more in love with the father as well. It doesn't hurt that they have off the charts chemistry either. Wow they steam up those sheets.

This story is all about love, loss and finding out who you really are. You feel so much for the characters and I truly got Goosebumps reading this. I truly loved this story and I can not wait to read another of Alexis books. I give her a round of applause. 5 Stars!

I read a snippet of this at the end of another book, I got hooked and when it finished I immediately went and bought the full book. I am so glad I did. This story starts with a young boy who has lost his mum and then battled a rare cancer, struggling with all life has thrown him he is anti everything. His father advised to get his son a therapist, and even though its something he doesn't feel helps, he agrees. What follows is sometimes a bit sad but very inspirational and uplifting as well, Shai does a fantastic job of understanding and redirecting Michaels anger as well as helping improve his relationship with his father. In the process though she travels her own journey, reliving a painful event in her own past and coming to some understandings of her own. Learning to forgive herself and others for things that happened. I could empathise with all these characters I read this with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat at various parts, so involved with the story it felt real. The pain, fear and misunderstandings all completely believable. It shows that even a child genius finds it hard to understand or handle certain events that life throws them no matter how easy they find it to google or look up things they want to learn and understand better, sometimes it takes someone giving them a different way of looking at something or how another would react to the way they are behaving, how it comes across to them. This book is well written and thought out, it is deep and powerful full of emotions and feelings, thoughts both good and bad made sense. I loved how in the end Michael became his age again and not so eaten up in the rage he couldn't enjoy his life for life's sake. I think all the characters learnt form each other, each benefitted in some way by being linked together by meeting Shai. Awesome read and worth more than 5 stars.

Broken and beautiful...but flawed

There are words that stay with you long after the book is finished. This book had so many of those words. It was a beautiful and heartbreaking story. The romance between Shai and Gabe was so wonderful and I was moved beyond words by Shai's relationship with Michael. I would have given this book 5 stars if not for Gabe's behavior toward the end, I'm not talking about the argument -spoiler here - but the losing himself in other women...I didn't feel that was a necessary plot device, there was no reason to bring in other women to further his descent, all it did was make me feel like he was cheating on Shai. It was resoundingly awful and I can't think about it without cringing. In fact, I almost did not want them to end up together because he wasn't worthy of her. Then to have her take him back so quickly. I was disgusted by her apology to him, and her ready acceptance back into his life. Yes, his words/apology were beautiful, but there was no way after the things he said, AND his sleeping around that she should have taken him back so quickly...if at all. I wish the author hadn't used the sleeping around and had thought further on how that really tarnished everything they had begun to build together.

Shai and Gabriel's story is a work of beauty. There is no other way to describe this book. Their story is heartbreaking and harrowing, but at the same time so funny, heartwarming and hot that I am still speechless. The backstory of Gabriel's son Michael, who is recovering from cancer, is certainly not for the faint of heart. All three, Shai, Gabriel and Michael are broken, each in their own way and due to different circumstances, but somehow their broken pieces fit together beautifully so that they might heal each other, if it weren't for the tiny detail that Shai is Michael's therapist, and therefore any deeper connection would be unethical ...
This story spoke to me on so many levels and captivated me from the first page to the last. I will never forget it, that's for sure!
