Stone Fox Bride: Love, Lust, and Wedding Planning for the Wild at Heart

Rate this book
Ditch the storybook wedding, banish Bridezilla, and walk down the aisle in truth and in You are a Stone Fox Bride and this is your bridal guide.

Molly Rosen Guy founded the brand Stone Fox Bride as an alternative to outdated, plastic-princess wedding culture. Her stylish and subversive approach is being embraced by creative, modern brides who believe in love and romance, but have no interest in running off into the sunset. In an inspiring mix of intimate storytelling, gorgeous visuals, and candid advice, with an aesthetic that channels Bianca Jagger in a white tux rather than Cinderella in a frilly gown, Molly Rosen Guy—your cool, hippie chic guide through the wilds of wedding planning—encourages brides-to-be, and their ladies in tow, to say no to all things phony, frilly, and silly. Featuring personal essays that explore the nuances of the process, including a raw, unairbrushed look at the realities of the early days of marriage, she tells us that a Stone Fox Bride should never sacrifice her style, her story, or her sanity to please others; she reassures us that weddings don't have to be free of confusion, shades of gray, or cellulite; and reminds us that marriage, like love, is equal parts complicated and beautiful.

Praise for Molly Rosen Guy and the Stone Fox Bride phenomenon

“The current wedding-wear darling of the jammin’ and Instagrammin’ set [offers] an insouciant, antiestablishment approach to weddings.” — The New York Times

“[Molly Rosen Guy is] making waves in the bridal industry thanks to her eclectic eye and refusal to conform to clichéd traditions.” — W

“Molly Rosen Guy built a business filling the needs of women who long for something more than your run-of-the-mill, princess-y flou for their big day.”— Vogue

This book does an excellent job of giving women permission to stray from the well-trod path of wedding planning and to embrace what makes them happy, even if it doesn't look like other people's weddings, maybe especially if it doesn't.

The personal stories combined with the gorgeous photographs makes it easy to sit down and devour this book in a way that never happened (at least for me when I was a bride) the other more traditional wedding guides.

While working the information desk one afternoon, I picked up this book to blindly to look at fancy wedding dresses and the newest 'bride trends'. Flipping through this book gave me rejuvenated hope for my future wedding. Catering to everyone and fearing of not being able to enjoy my party worried me about my nuptials. Next thing i know i was reading about Yoko Ono marrying John Lennon in a floppy hat and big sunglasses. Classic. This books main objective was to encourage brides to take charge of their own weddings and do YOUR ceremony however YOU want. Guy really executes this well with a mixture of photos, personal stories, and cuss words. It was refreshing really, but not exactly a new idea.

This leads me to the real reason why I gave this book 5 stars. At the end of the book in chapter 10, Molly Rosen Guy REALLY lays it all out for us in "and they lived ___ ever after". Instead of just giving us a book about fulfilling our childhood fantasy wedding, Guy gives us an insight to why you are having the wedding in the first place, and what you are going to experience after the music fades. In the mini chapter, Guy gives us a glimpse into her 'not so blissful' marriage counseling session. It was brutal. It was honest. It was real. She takes us through the ups and downs (read ugly) of her marriage. I'll leave you to read the passage yourselves, but I must say that this book ironically will renew your belief in marriage. Everyone always told me that marriage will be hard, a lot of work blah blah blah. But Guy really puts those sentences into actual life experiences that make you go 'oh, i see now'.

If your not interested in picking up this almost coffee table-ish book for the wedding content, i highly recommend doing so just for the last passage. I believe everyone should be shown the ugly side of everything before committing to a life long promise.

People are messy, and people are strange. Just because you have a wedding doesn’t mean “life stuff” stops, and this book is a perfect reminder of the crazy, fun, stressful, individual facets of relationships, love, weddings and marriage. Details everything from the expected offerings about florals and skincare to the surprising-but-wonderful topics like how to maintain friendships after marriage, cautionary tales, financial and meditation advice, and integrating multi-cultural or religious traditions into a ceremony. Wonderfully inclusive for LGBT and BIPOC readers.

Liberally peppered with anecdotes from the author’s own nuptials and life, but you really get a sense of who she is in her writing. I got a “vibe” about her while I was reading, that she loved her husband but there was trouble churning beneath the surface.

(Note; After reading this, I found out that Stone Fox Bride has been shuttered, Molly and Mike divorced in 2019, and a lot of the Stone Fox Brides themselves wanted taken off social media because of transitions in their own lives and relationships.)

Ok Ok Ok, You are like, what? Andee? What are you doing?

Just hear me out... I was picking up some books at the lib. last night and saw this on the new shelf. I liked her style and I have some events coming up that I have a big part in planning, for work and myself... So I thought I would just dip in and see what the kids are doing these days..

Wow, I stayed up reading almost every word of this..not at all what I thought this was going to be. I read an Instagram meme yesterday that said something like 'when you become the person you want you start seeing reflections of yourself'. I think I picked up this book because this lovely lady and I have similar stories, and aesthetics.

It actually turned out to be really good life advice... and its so beautiful.. and absolutely had nothing to do with events I am planning..

four point five stars!!!

I’ll probably never be a bride (for various reasons, some obvious some not 😂) but if I was going to be a bride I’d definitely be a Stone Fox Bride.

But you don’t have to vibe with the Stone Fox esthetic to benefit from the great information inside this book. There’s advice from a variety of experts in the industry on everything you’ll need to make your day unique to you. Big budgets or small to no budget at all there’s something here for everyone, it’s a great place to seek inspiration for whatever type of wedding (and bachelorette party and honeymoon and wedding shower and…. you get the idea!) you want to plan.

From traditional weddings with hundreds of guests to quick trips to the courthouse with your BFFs, everything is covered from a variety of perspectives allowing the reader to find their own path to that perfect day.

(Full disclosure: Molly and I were friends in high school. Well not “friends” friends, but we did run in the same social circles. Hit the same parties. Wasted some afternoons getting wasted at Oak St. beach. You get the idea. Good times. [I’m pretty sure we were cool back in the day?? Honestly, thinking back, I’m not so sure? Maybe I owe her an gigantic apology for being a selfish a*********************************boy in HS??? I probably do 🥴🤣🥴 Anyway…] When I heard through the grapevine that she wrote a book I knew I was going to have to buy it and show some support. Then I found out it was a wedding planning book, not really my genre but I figured what the heck, just go for it. Reading books outside the comfort zone is good for the soul. Then I found out that it’s only available in hardback…and for $45.00… and I thought… were we really really that close in high school?!? 🤣❤️🤣 )

I loved reading this. There’s some great style to it. It’s comforting and crass and honest. So well done. Great design to the book as well. There is some lovely photography throughout and there are little accoutrements on the paper that accentuates the reading experience. It’s a great investment. If she writes another book I’ll definitely buy it, even if it’s another book about wedding planning 🥳

I am not currently planning a wedding nor do I ever want to (probably). But this book is so much more than wedding planning. I follow Molly Guy on twitter and have since I heard her on a podcast a few years ago. She writes so beautifully and honestly about love, family, loss, death, grief, and divorce. She does that here too. Even if you're a "fuck weddings" kinda gal, I'd give this one a read. It's beautiful. (I know that she's currently in the process of divorcing her husband, which is sad and hard, but also a part of life. It's not a failure to end something. It's just the end. I love how honest she is about that).

When I checked this book out, I didn't know it was based around a now-defunct brand with a very distinct style that isn't my style at all. Despite chapters on self image, everyone featured in the book has that effortlessly boho chic, relaxed, skinny look that will never, ever be possible for me to achieve. Much of the author's advice is still good, but it didn't take long for me to get tired of her name dropping (even when names are changed it's easy enough to figure out who she means) and edginess just for the sake of being edgy.

I truly love Molly Rosen Guy as a creative and often read her pieces in Vogue or otherwise. This book overall was annoying to me, though I am certain I am the intended audience (other than living in Los Angeles and not New York City). I read this as I was at the tail end of my own (non-traditional, destination, lower budget) wedding planning, and much of the advice simply fell short.

I won this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.

Molly Rosen Guy seems like what the little voice in your head would be saying if you managed to keep it together under stress but we're still you and planning a wedding. Throughout the book, she's sage, kind and completely relatable.

I know just the bride to be to pass this on to!!

That is the most depressing wedding planning book I’ve ever read. I was hoping for much more of the “off the grid” type planning being show, but much of it was the same rhetoric. Ending a wedding planning book on being in marriage counseling (although I know the company is now closed and the author is divorced) seems counter productive 🤔

I was in between loving this book and hating it throughout my reading adventure. I loved the author’s writing style and the beautiful photographs but I felt like the book was a lot of name-dropping and celebrity weddings, which was not what the book advertised.

Hilarious, informative, brutally honest, and made me realize that I'm probably not so "wild at heart." Jam-packed of information and advice from wedding industry experts and former brides. Much more text-heavy than other hardcover wedding books, which I love. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

I learned some surprisingly candid details about her relationships with her husband, her sister, and her body. Not a ton of help for actual wedding planning.

THE book everyone needs to read BEFORE they start wedding planning.
Gives you the moral support you are missing if you're not one for the cookie cutter wedding. Might help you tell more than a few people to butt out and let you do your thing - something I know I needed - and still need - while planning my wedding.

I received this book as a gift. For a wedding planning book, it is refreshing. I did like the inclusion of multiple perspectives from both professionals and real people, and the book is aesthetically pleasing. However. I think there are too many areas where the author projects her own biases too strongly (including fat shaming🤬), and oversharing.

Weddings are an out of control industry. When planning mine I was blown away by the cost of anything related to wedding - it automatically goes up a billion times (woof) and by how many details you don’t have a clue about. I loved this book. It’s for the average person. The sweatpants in public person. The laughs and memes person. My people.

Big shout out to Net Galley for the ARC!

While there wasn't a ton of practical wedding information in here, I LOVED Molly's attitude. I'm pretty low-key, low-maintenance, and utterly uninterested in a "normal" wedding, and this book is a great reminder that there are a million different ways you can go. Would recommend to unconventional brides looking for support and ideas.

As someone who is not getting married anytime soon, I was interested in the premise of the book. I have a bit of a guilty pleasure when it comes to understanding the Wedding Industrial Complex. I was under the impression, however, that it would be similar in theme to Offbeat Bride, but I was mistaken. The author was engaging, I especially found her origin story with her current husband to be a great read. The wedding planning aspect, itself, was not very....Thorough? It was definately a picture book, but it also offered some pretty good advice and anecdotes.
