Carmen Kennedy is a spoiled brat from Beverly Hills with a chip on her shoulder and a cocaine addiction to match. Using drugs to suppress reality, her life is more than she can stomach most days. All she wants is to disappear, and on one fateful night, her wish is granted.
There is a world that exists just beyond the fabric of our own. When Carmen is dragged there against her will, her hopelessness seems to disappear, replaced by a determination to survive. The Keeper of Crows is charged with guarding Carmen, but is safety a possibility in a world so desolate? Can love blossom when danger lies in wait? Together, they fight like hell, seeming to lose more ground than they gain with each battle against the dark enemy threatening to tear them apart. Can love keep her safe? Can it give her the strength she needs?
When the lines between life and death, reality and dream become blurred, who will save the souls trapped in the spaces between Heaven and Hell? Who will save Carmen's only love, The Keeper of Crows?
RONE Award-winning author Casey Bond lives on a rural farm in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She writes phoenixes – gloriously flawed and morally gray characters that fiercely rise from the ashes of their circumstances.
Worldbuilding is one of her favorite pastimes. She thinks thunderstorms are better than coffee and that watching a meteor shower is the closest thing to magic you might ever see. She’s a firm believer that every amazing book needs a world you want to wrap yourself in, a character you want to win, and a love you would fight for.
Casey is the author of When Wishes Bleed, Gravebriar, House of Eclipses, and Where Oceans Burn.
The main character Carmen is the daughter of a prominent politician. Her mother comitted suicide because of her husbands cruel behavior towards her. Carmen seeks solace in drugs and sex until it all goes wrong and shes admitted to a psych ward.
Not long after she has an accident/overdose? and has an out of body experience that brings her into purgatory where she meets the Keeper of Crows,a Guardian of sorts for stray souls caught inbetween.
Addiction might add some kind of pathos but added to the fact that she doesnt want to seem to give it up and the way she casually gives some orderly at the psych ward a blow job... I just had a hard time relating to a character like Carmen. Then when she is in purgatory and trading raunchy jokes with a fallen angel as the most natural thing in the World I decided this book and me needed to part ways.

This book chewed me up and spit me out. Then made me question MY reality. What at first seems like any other paranormal romance quickly becomes something more. Something darker. More confusing. More mysterious. And definitely more thrilling. I will admit that I am a big fan of Casey Bond/CL Bond/Casey L Bond whichever iteration, I love how snarky her heroines tend to be, and the fact that they don't just go along with whatever is being told/done to them. I think that really played a big part in my liking this particular book too. Carmen seems like an awful chick, but as more things come to light you realize that might not exactly be true. She is a complicated mess of a character and I appreciated that the author wasn't afraid to have a main character that not everyone would like. Sorta like some other authors we know and love. Ahem. You know the ones. Yup, her. And her. Okay moving on. Keeper, now where do I begin with this frustrating dude. I mean, later in the book a lot of events/reactions make sense that don't at first, but some of his reactions and his lack of knowledge were never explained, or were just sort of brushed off as unimportant but were in fact things that would have made the story flow better, had they been delved into further. The ending wasn't my favorite in the world, but since it is part 1 of 2, I'm reserving full judgment until I read the next one. To me it's utterly unfair to rage about a cliffhanger you've been warned about anyway.
One of my favorite lines in the book gives you a glimpse into the overall tone, and Bond's way of simplifying things into beautiful nuggets.
"Scars were the remnants of terrible things, but also proof that a person had survived them."
I was sobbing a couple times, and laughing a few more. Definitely some cringing and sighing too. But it's not a non-stop emotional roller coaster, there's some world building, action and relationship developing too! This will certainly be a favorite among fans of paranormal romance and thrillers/romantic suspense. Definitely for the older crowd though, as there is some mature content.
My thanks to the author and Lady Amber's Reviews for the opportunity!
“I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.”
It was kind of hard to get into at the beginning. The main character is at the therapist the whole first three chapters. It got more interesting at the last half of the book. I feel like that’s when it picked up.
I did however like the characters and the world the author created. Keeper of Crows sounds like a reaper book but it’s not really. I liked the main character Carmen. She’s so snarky and smart. I look forward to see what the author does with the second book...
This book is under the Young Adult genre…. Hmmm…. Maybe that should be reevaluated. An MC who is snorting coke up her nose in a nasty club bathroom and giving head to a psych nurse for some cigs seems young adult-ish. But I draw the line at using the word asshole.
The first half was really good and it brought an interesting aspect I haven't seen before. The last half seemed rushed and all the action scenes were over immediately. I felt like it could have been described better and transitioned better from one point to the other.
Overall though the storyline was interesting and I'd get book 2 if it was 1.99 or less but it's closer to $4 and I just don't think it's worth it.
Casey Bond is well known for her young adult series, Frenzy. Keeper of Crows is nothing like the Frenzy series, so don't even attempt to compare them. I was fortunate enough to read this book as an ARC. I had no idea what this book was about when I began reading. Thinking "typical YA book". Rich girl, Carmen, with her daddy issues. Well, I was way wrong! It twists and get your mind blown away. Then it twists again and left with your jaw dropping , begging to read more and unable to put the book down and go into work exhausted because you were up until 2am reading....not giving any plot in this review. I personally dislike people who explain everything. Casey Bond wrote a beautiful book, full of detail and character structure. Keeper of Crows is a MUST READ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Carmen Kennedy is a sour, vacuous young woman flirting with death and danger. The daughter of a successful businessman turned politician, Carmen is a typical ‘sad little rich girl.’ She feels unwanted and unloved and, as such, becomes most unlovable. When Carmen’s reckless behaviour lands her in intensive care, she is sucked into purgatory and forced to fight for her very tenuous existence in the ‘real’ world and beyond. At her side is the dark and powerful Keeper of Crows, a majestic and terrifying warrior placed in purgatory to maintain order. Bond’s fantastic purgatory is wildly imaginative. Her creativity is seemingly boundless and her imagery highly evocative. I loved the image this passage conjured: “The demon gave a slight bow to Keeper and slowly sank into the earth, inch by inch, until he was gone and all that remained was a pile of bubbling tar on the ground.” At its heart, Keeper of Crows is a transformation story. Initially Carmen is insufferable, almost comically so: “I hated dogs. And kids. And old people. And men.” I found the start of this book a little difficult to read because Carmen, as a walking stereotype, has few redeeming qualities. But once she fully realizes her capacity for love and strength, she becomes a truly fearsome force. While a transformation story isn’t at all unique, Bond does an excellent job leading to the formidable crescendo of Carmen’s becoming. I was also taken with Bond’s not so subtle political leanings peppered throughout the narrative. Carmen’s nefarious father is characterized by “his fake smile, caked-on orange make-up, and his jubilant face as it waved to hungry crowds, starving for his lies.” Sound like anyone you know? The conclusion of this book, however, is less than satisfactory. It takes on the qualities of a confused psychological thriller with a few inconsistencies. I expected something more from an author with such imagination. Without revealing too much, the archetype Bond uses to wrap up the narrative is rather unsatisfying. I look forward to book two in this duology, nonetheless. Perhaps what I’m interpreting as inconsistencies and confusion will be clarified when the story continues. Bond initially caught my attention as an attending author for this year’s Once Upon a Book convention being held in Frankenmuth Michigan. As an attending blogger, I plan to check out several authors prior to the August 2017 event. Keeper of Crows stood out for its stellar cover design. I like pretty things and the artwork for this book definitely sets in apart. And for the most part, this book is as cool inside as it is on the outside.
I don't even know where to begin about how wonderful and original this book is! I honestly began the book (likely by the author's design) thinking that this book was going to be about a spoiled rich girl that continues to make a series of mistakes, and no matter what magical occurrences keep happening to her, she will be continue to make selfish decisions that end up getting everyone else around her in serious danger. It did start out that way, but it certainly didn't last long. And when she did make to poor decisions, they only hurt her, which was her goal, since no matter how rich she was, she hated herself and her life.
After one near death experience, I found myself wondering how she was going to find a way to get herself back into another near death experience, since this seemed to be her new life goal, with the bonus of hurting her father's image, who she despised. However, in an interesting twist of fate, her next near death experience came much faster than expected, not by her design, and as we find out later, with MUCH more behind why.
In this case, she is literally dragged into an entire different reality, and her need to escape life instantly became a need to save her life. And this world had to much bizarre going on, she had no idea if she was alive or dead, or who she could trust.
I don't want to give too much away, but this 'other world' she becomes a part of is truly incredible in the way the author has created it. She does an amazing job describing an immense amount of detail regarding both the place and beings that lived there, and it was so easy to imagine it and everything that was going on there. I was so incredibly sucked into the story, which the author made easy, because I didn't have to keep re-reading to understand what things were or what things looked like. It was a very impressive world with layers into other worlds that seamlessly made sense.
Then, there was the Keeper of Crows. The more you read about him, the more you realize there are more and more layers to him, and it makes so much sense why they are so drawn to each other. In what seems like a hopeless situation, just being to together makes it seem brighter, makes them see some good, and makes them want to do whatever it takes to make things better -- together.
Of course, there were constant twists and turns that you don't see coming, which makes it nearly impossible to put the book down. Right when you're sure you know how everything is going to play out, especially because a character (I don't want to give away) tells her close to the end HOW it will play out, you're left freaking out a little that it may not happen that way after all. The world, the people in it, and even your own mind has a tendency to throw curve balls. I'm now dying to read the next book to find out what, if anything, these curve balls have changed. Is it a trick, or is it real? If it's a trick, is all of it a trick or just some of it?
Like I said, there are many layers to this book, and it's like nothing I've read before. I love every bit about it, and will immediately read the next one when it's here!
Sorry to the authors who currently hold my top 5 for favorite UF/PNR, one of you has to go because there's a new girl in town!!! Casey Bond is kicking one of you out!!!
This is my first book by Miss Bond and I still on a high from her writings. The best part though???Its not over....there's a second book!!!! ***squeal***
What I loved about Keeper of Crows:
Absolutely Everything!!!! But to be more specific.... - Carmen. I connected with her right from the beginning. I knew that she was going to be a strong female character. That she would be able to hold her own. Even in the beginning when she didn't seem to have any redeeming qualities, she pulled me right in. - The Keeper. Holy hot damn!! Dark and dangerous. A bit of a jerk. Perfect! - The Plot - So different from the usual UF/PNR. Casey's descriptions of Purgatory are wildly imaginative in a dark, yet unique way. So many questions running through your head..... Miss Bond certainly writes with the reader in mind, as there is no doubt she keeps you engaged throughout the entire book. -The Ending - Wow!!! I was left questioning my own reality!!!
What I didn't like:
For this book I would really like to say that there was nothing at all. But if I had to pick something it would be the major death scenes. I felt like there was such a build up to them and yet it was over almost before it began. But it did not in anyway deter from the storyline.
My favourite line in the book:
"I stood and his hands clamped onto my waist, pulling me to him so fast, I didn't register his lips on mine, his tongue on mine until I was tasting him, moving in unison, the beginning of a deadly dangerous dance."
Keeper of Crows offers the readers so much. Casey writes so well, that you will feel like you have crossed the veil into Purgatory yourself and at the end???? Well....you'll question it all.
An average girl suddenly finds out she is special. Despite having only thought of her own interest until this exact moment, she will use her powers for good to save the world, all while accompanied by a super hot guy she just met but loves eternally. This story follows the typical format of the YA fantasy Chosen One genre, but this one involves Purgatory, Angels, and Demons so hey, new twist! Predictability is not a bad thing: how many enemies to lovers contemporary romance books have I read yet I still keep going back for more and loving every minutes of it.
However, when I'm reading a book where the plot points follow a predictable pattern, I want two things: a unique setting, which check, this book has, and amazing characters that make me invested in their story, which this book does not have. Carmen's only defining personality feature is being horny/sexual. In rehab? Blow job time. Therapy? Let's see if we can turn the old doctor on. Was just separated from my possibly dead body, kidnapped, taken to a strange dangerous world? This guy is SEXY! I don't seem to know anything else about her other than she was drug using rich party girl and she wants to have lots of sex that she never mentions enjoying. This makes her seem like she is craving approval and love through the only means she knows after not receiving it from family, which puts a really concerning shadow over the romance subplot.

First, I love the cover of this book and the paperback formatting is gorgeous! The premise of the book is interesting, involving arch angels, the anti-Christ and the devil himself. The writing was also great, with a good balance of show and tell. I did have some issues, mainly with the main character and her relationship with Micheal. The main issue was with how sexual and physical she was. It made it hard to believe that she actually cared for Micheal, and she felt more like a seductress than someone that an archangel would fall for. Overall, I found the sexual portions of the books brought it down in ratings for me, but that's just personal taste. I would've preferred to have a better understanding of what made Michael attracted to Carmen that wasn't purely sexual. She was strong against the stuff she went through, but the battles against the anti-Christ and the devil seemed to go too easily. Overall, a great quick read with skilled writing and for those who want a descriptive sexual and physically driven element, it's most likely a five star read. I'm looking forward to book two and hoping I'll see more emotional ties to Micheal than mainly physical ones.
I powered through. This was not my idea of a great story. I would not recommend this, here’s why:
Spoilers: You have this spoiled starlet who ends up in rehab, brandishing sex like a weapon and looking for death, ending up on death’s door. Then you have this fallen angel who some how falls in love with the starlet after reading her raunchy mind and decides the only way to show her she has value is to have sex with her. Then they get separated. She battles evil after evil, finds out her father is the anti-christ and saves heaven from Lucifer, since the angels haven’t been able to do it; and uses that to bargains for her fallen angel back. After a service in purgatory she has to survive a mental ward and we are right back where we started. A starlet who is being pumped full of drugs and put in the box society thinks she should be in. But wait, there’s a crow feather, so her fallen angel must be near and maybe in the next book they find each other again.
There’s your outline.
Was the book well written? Maybe, I just truly could not get past the crazy of the story. It ended in a rush and it made me feel like even the author was bored with it.

It was a free download from Amazon, it was included in the horror section, but Goodreads labeled it far more accurately.
All in all, a tired tale of angels and the devil yada yada. At points I thought I was reading one of those trashy romance things, or 50 shades of whatever which I can proudly say I have never read.
For the first little bit I thought the main character was male and then realized they were meant to be female That took some time to materialize. Kind of like a kitten we once got and were sure she was a she only to find out later she was a he. There were some redeeming aspects but I am struggling to remember them and couldn't really be bothered to list any.
The book left me with a meh feeling and then I realized it was book 1 of .... I guess the suspense will just have to kill me. Not intending to pursue this one.
When I found out Casey was writing a paranormal I was beyond thrilled!! After her huge success with the Frenzy series I knew this would be just as great...l definitely wasn't disappointed!!
Carmen is a spoiled rich girl who thinks she can do whatever she wants without any consequences. She's got an addiction that gets her in some major trouble.
My father was the antichrist for sending me to this place.
After ending up in the hospital things start to majorly change for Carmen. She ends up in a place she didn't think was real and she begins to realize what she thought was a dream is actually happening to her.
She meets the Keeper of Crows, who is more than he seems to be. She's intrigued by him and wonders why he's been stuck here for so long doing this job that will never fix the major problems. Carmen realizes so much more about herself and her life on Earth.
“It breaks my heart,” he said softly, running his fingers through the short strands of my hair.
I loved this book! It was very intriguing because I didn't have any idea what would happen next which I loved!! It definitely didn't go the way I thought it would!! I loved Carmen and Keeper's banter, always kept me smiling. I loved how she figured out she was more than she thought she was.
I can't wait until I can get a hold of book two and see what happens next!!
Casey Bond stays true to her craft with Keeper of the Crows by providing readers a new outlook on what some might deem paranormal romance. She brought the unexpected with Carmen and Keeper’s journey through the bowels of Purgatory giving the reader a glimpse of the place between Heaven and Hell. In my opinion, Keeper of the Crows borders more on theological fiction with souls, archangels, and the devil himself.
While Keeper of the Crows won’t be my top pick as a favorite novel of Bond’s, I still found myself intrigued by her tale. Slow moving at times, irresistible at others, Keeper of the Crow had my attention. Whether it was the mysterious Keeper or absorbing the wealth of information about Bond’s take on this Purgatory realm, I found myself engaged, curious, and wanting more information.
I just loved Carmen and The Keeper they are such great and complex characters. Carmen is sassy, speaks her mind and is also lost to who she really is, while The Keeper is doing the job he was given without question even though others that meet him in his world tell him what he is doing isn't worth it. Carmen's arrival not only surprises The Keeper as she doesn't react like others he whispers to but also now he is stuck with her and her mouth/mind questioning everything. They way the story unfold and how we see them both slowly reveal what their real personalities are is great and the mix of other worldly beings, wars, mysteries and a little bit of romance just adds to this fantastic read. I can not wait to read book 2 and see what happens next!
This book has taken my on a journey and I loved every minute of it. This is such a different take on an old favorite, Cinderella. What do we get in this book? Well a young romance blooming, mystery, suspense, and it is all so intriguing. I absolutely loved Ella and Asher. They are just so darn sweet together, and those notes.. sigh.. By the end of this book I am left craving more. I can sit and just imagine more story's that could spin off this book. This book is worth picking up and giving a shot.
Keeper of Crows was about far more than just good vs. evil; more than a bad-girl-seeks-hot-guy paranormal romance; It was also a suspenseful, mind-tweaking thriller dealing with the complexities of the unknown and the impossible. It drew me in and made me think, while completely entertaining me at the same time... I am so glad there is more of this story to come! I will be getting my hands on book two in this duology just as soon as it's available! I will also be recommending this book to my book club, because the story can lead into a myriad of topics of discussion. I highly recommend this book for mature readers!
This story is so different from what I thought it would be. I'm so enthralled with these characters and the battles they've had to fight. This book is so much more. There is paranormal mixed with religion. There is also a backdrop of abuse and self depreciation. With the added bonus of love. Thank you Casey!!
What if you died and your soul was captured and taken to purgatory? Would you fight or go quietly. This story really makes you wonder about your faith and what the afterlife holds for you. It's also a love story. I've given it 5 stars because I loved it but it's not for everyone.
First off I have to say this book is so well written you won't put it down .
Carmen is a spoilt rich kid with all the problems that go along with this . Except everything isn't what it seems . This a a great weird and wonderful read , it's twisted powerful and sexy as hell . Hell there's a word . You will find yourself shouting at the book . The keeper of the crows , mmmm he's a hot as hell .but twice as nice .
You will meet , gab and Micheal . And a few not so nice characters
I really enjoyed reading this book, the characters were great and I loved the plot itself. I really enjoy the way the author writes their characters and the plots themselves. Overall this was a great read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow! I am so amazed how well written and intricate the story is. It's so elaborate and emersive. I'd have to say this is the best book I've read so far this year.
This is an amazing book. I love how the story flows. The characters are amazing, my favorite is Carmen and Michael. If you fallen angels, devil and things called lessons, you will love this.
