A crescendo of evil could destroy their perfect harmony.
The Gray Court, Book 5
Oberon is well and truly lost, with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or where he’s going. One woman makes his palms sweat and his heart race, a woman with turquoise eyes and a beautiful voice. Instinct tells him she’s the only one who can save him.
Cassie knows the truth—he is the High King, her truebond, the one man born to be hers and hers alone. Restoring his memory and keeping him out of the Black Court’s clutches is her mission, though success means losing him. Yet to give the world back its High King, she will make that sacrifice.
As soon as Oberon’s memory comes crashing back through his mind’s closed door, he makes one vow. Though beset by enemies, chased and attacked, he will return to his rightful place with his Queen by his side.
Except when he makes good on his vow, all hell breaks loose. And when Cassie's life is threatened, the fae world will bow before the High King or pay the price in blood.
Warning: This title contains explicit sex, graphic language, fishy shenanigans and royal naughtiness.
Dana Marie Bell wrote her first short story when she was thirteen years old. She attended the High School for Creative and Performing Arts for creative writing, where freedom of expression was the order of the day. When her parents moved out of the city and placed her in a Catholic high school for her senior year she tried desperately to get away, but the nuns held fast, and she graduated with honors despite herself.
Dana has lived primarily in the Northeast (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, to be precise), with a brief stint on the US Virgin Island of St. Croix. She lives with her soul-mate and husband Dusty, their two maniacal children, an evil ice-cream stealing cat and a bull terrier that thinks it’s a Pekinese.
I fell in love with Dana Marie Bell's writing after reader her Halle Pumas series. Since then, I have pretty much gobbled up all the books in several of her other series. The Gray Court is just as entertaining but is not as lighthearted as some of Bell's other series. Oh...don't get me wrong. There are funny moments and the stories are just as good but the story line is much more serious with its plots and machinations. The characters in these books play political games that are for keeps. The white against the black. The black against the gray. No...the gray against the white. Who the heck can keep up?!?! The motivations of the characters change from book to book and I love it! Each book introduces characters that show you their stories and don't just tell them. And, Siren's Song was no different. Cassie and Oberon were probably among my favorite characters in the series, minus Leo and Ruby. They will always have my heart because they introduced me to this intriguing series. But Oberon is in a league of his own so you cannot help but love the High King. And Cassie...dear, sweet, Cassie. I just wanted to give her (and Dayton) a hug because of the way their family treated them. They were virtual outcasts in their family because they didn't hold the traditional beauty of her heritage -- the Atlantians. But fortunately for them, they had each other and Cassie had the Dunne's and Robin Goodfellow in her corner. They watched out for her and had her back as strongly as her brother did. Shane Dunne warned her that her truebond, Oberon, was in danger and Cassie literally drops everything to go to his aid. When Cassie meets up with Oberon he is strong and healthy only his memory is gone. Like completely. He has no idea who he is or where he is going. Cassie helps him slowly regain her memory but doing so puts her in the direct line of fire of those who plot against the King...and her. Cassie and Oberon are very sweet together. He is very gray while she is all shades of beautiful turquoise. But their colors and harmonies blend together as beautifully as Oberon saves his truebond in the only way he can. After he saves her, they are irrevocably bound together and Oberon refuses to let her go. He protects her and loves her -- in his way -- and shields her from the barbs of her evil family. Gah! I hated them. Absolutely hated them. Save her brother, there was no redeeming qualities among them. The fact that they would use their children as pawns was despicable. And that sister, Demetria...she should have died from something awful...like fiery crabs. She is a mermaid after all...that would be appropriate :D. The story as a whole was very written, as to be expected with Bell. The plot was complex and had many hidden facets because those who you thought were bad, were not, and those who should have been good were playing games with people's lives.
I appreciated how we get to see the parental side of Robin, with his son Raven. Robin is deadly and protective when it comes to protecting those he cares about and he has proved that all throughout the series. But he is gentle, kind, and accepting of his son. I also liked Raven a lot. I didn't know how I was going to feel about him after he defected from the Black court but he is proving himself to be a valuable asset and Blade. I will love seeing how he interacts with Ruby's friend Amanda in the next book.
If you love paranormal romance with an urban fantasy feel, you should definitely check out Bell's Gray Court series. The series is rife with all kinds of paranormals -- literally, all kinds including dragons, sirens, faefolk, goblins, brownies, and vampires -- and each one brings a wonderful dimension to the series that cannot be missed.
I fucking hate cliffhangers! I thought this was the final book in the series, which is the only reason I started reading it in the first place.
The series has been okay thus far. Nothing riveting but not bad enough to abandon the series, my OCD tendencies be damned. I'll probably read the next one if I have nothing better on my kindle at the time.
Authors: Now here this! With a few exceptions, I now wait until the entire series is finished before I will buy & read it. It is possible to subtly set up for the next book in your series without resorting to using a cliffhanger, which in my opinion is the easy way out. And I'm not alone ~ many of my friends do the same.
As much as I wish I could have loved this book, I didn't :( Dana Marie Bell is one of my favourite authors and I love almost all of her books. This series is one that I loved and I've become quite attached to the characters along the way. Having said that, Oberon was the one character I wasn't sure I would enjoy reading about. Not because he isn't a great character, but because the life of royals tend to be a bit boring.
It's not that I didn't like the story or the characters, I just felt like this book was a tiny bit boring and if I'm completely honest, I didn't enjoy the last 4 chapters. In fact, I skimmed through most of it and then stopped just before the end. I just didn't care enough to know how it ended. I think if this book had ended after they figured everything out and saved the day, it would have been a better review from me.
I liked Cassie, she isn't as much of a kick-ass heroine as I'm used to from DMB but I thought she was great to read about. And Oberon is a nice character, but that's the problem, I don't want a nice character, I want a hot, awesome man to fall in love with. The passion between the two was also lacking for me. I just didn't feel like they loved each other.
I still love this series and the characters so I'm excited to see where DMB takes this story next. I'll definitely be reading Raven's book, though I'm gonna have to get used to the Raven/ Robin name thing. They are so similar I keep getting confused :P
I've loved this series. It has a great mix of characters and I was so looking forward to Oberon and Cassie's story.
Perhaps because of the amnesia story line, we didn't get the same amount of relationship building as in previous books. Quite a lot of time was spent simply trying to get Oberon's memory back that the part where we saw them fall in love was kind of minimal.
Still loved it and looking forward to Raven's book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ALERT ALERT : this is the most beautiful cover of the series ... And it looks like a real cover, not a Photoshop crash xD FINALLY the book on Oberon and Cassie !! I couldn't wait to see the king succumbed to his destiny and I loved how he rejects her at first and when he finally loves her even if he can't remember anything ... (even if I would have preferred that his amnesia had been more complete and last longer) I particularly liked the peculiarities of Cassie as a mermaid and the fact that she has unique powers and her own culture (the story of the scale she offers as a token of love ... <3) The political intrigues are also further developed in this book with the madness of Glorianna, the darkness of Titannia, the different courts of the marine peoples (I LOVE the one of the Pacific with the prince and his new consort =D) and the attack on Oberon (and all his past too) ... I really liked it =D Well, I don't know if I would read the story of Robin's son because he doesn't attract me hugely but in any case, for fans of Fae and light and humorous fantasy, this book and this series are for you =D
Dana Marie Bell could rewrite the phone book and I'd read it. She has such a brilliant mind, and every book is better than the last. The High King Oberon, such a mystery up to this point in the series, has had his memories stolen, and he is instantly drawn to Cassie, the mysterious siren who showed up just in time to rescue him. He had a truebond once, but she betrayed him and started a war that ravaged the fae, so he is in no rush to get involved with another woman, no matter how strongly he may want her. Cassie, a mermaid on the run from her scheming parents, knows that Oberon is her truebond, but he had shown no interest in her before he lost his memory, so she knows that he will abandon her as soon as she sings him back to health. Regardless, she puts her own life on the line to restore his memories, and in the process proves herself worthy of his trust. A tale full of political scheming and betrayal, love and loyalty, this novel hits all the right notes.
I really believe you need to have read the previous books to get the best from this series. Loved that Oberon and Cassie get their story and what a great story it is. Oberon has lost his memory due to being poisoned and Cassie has to keep him safe until his memories return. Getting his memory back involves an awful lot of family intrigue, nastiness and pure treason. I loved how this story played out. I have owned, read and reviewed this book previously but my review is missing. Never a hardship to reread them.
It was really great to see that even the 'big man' got another chance at happily ever after and i even more love the fact that she was not something breathtaking, but down to earth and levelheaded creature that would not charm everyone and blind them with her outward beauty.
This is book five in this highly addictive and always entertaining series about the Fae and the three very different courts that rule them. As usual the author writes an engrossing story that begs to be finished in one sitting as putting this book down feels such a crime. This beguiling story is one that fans are crying out for as the last book The Hob ended with a teensy bit of a cliffhanger but fear not fellow addicts as we are back in the world of the Grey court with a bang with this book! Oberon is the High King and lord over all the Fae but treachery and avarice is stalking his court. He has been cruelly betrayed by one he trusts and now finds himself wandering the land aimlessly with no memory of how he came to be there or indeed who he truly is. He leaves behind not just those who rely on him for justice but also the one person who could bring him happiness , his truebond Cassie! Cassie realised as soon as she saw him that the much feared Oberon was the one meant to complete her but his immediate and all too apparent disdain has left her with little hope. She has spent so long trying to avoid her family and her fate in an arranged and loveless marriage that to finally be so close to happiness is devastating but Cassie is brave and will do anything to save her Truebond. When it's discovered that Oberon is missing Cassie quickly realises the vision Shane known as the Child of Dunne saw is indeed coming true and it's up to her to rescue the amnesiac King. Told not to reveal too much at once though it's hard for Cassie to gain Oberons trust but if she doesn't the consequences will be dire! Oo I love this series and this book does not dissapoint. Once again it's the fascinating characters and all their idiosyncrasies that capture the readers attention and just doesn't let go. This world is populated with colourful larger than life characters that truly encapsulate what it means to be Fae, they are most definitely "other"! In the last book Robin the Hob stole the show and I was curious to see if the somewhat taciturn Oberon could compete as a hero but pairing him up with a mermaid is quite simply a stroke of pure genius. This closed off male does not want to let anyone get close and yet there's just something about Cassie that gets under his skin . As for our heroine , she has the family from Hell and I'm so pleased to see her find her eventual happiness. It's not an easy journey they make but a necessary one if Oberon is to find his way back. This is a sensual tale but what really makes it stand out is the authors imagination and her descriptions vividly bring the world of the Merfolk to life. I think most imagine darkness in the murky waters but with these colourful mermaids nothing could be further from the truth and Cassie is truly a siren of the deep. Such striking imagery is used by the author but as usual it's the Hob whose colours light up every page he is on but don't fear dear reader as Cassie is determined to add a little colour to Oberon's world and I think he is more than ready for it! So in conclusion it's a satisfying read and happily there's clearly more to come. Ms Bell keeps writing strong interesting characters riddled with quirks and full of mischief. I love the humour within this book and the antics of certain members of Oberon's infamous Blades are a delight and I can't wait to read more.
At the end of The Hob, King Oberon was shown wandering, lost because his memory was gone. That was a terrible way for the author to leave fans of the series hanging. Outright cruel. Needless to say, I am glad that I had The Siren's Song loaded on my Kindle and on my review schedule so I didn't have to wait long to find out what Oberon's fate was and whether or not he would accept his mate.
Having first met Cassie in Artistic Vision and then getting to know her a bit more in The Hob, it was obvious that hers was a pure and honest soul. As one of the merfolk, she uses her siren’s song to heal others and yet her own safety was in danger one she fled Atlantis up avoid an unwanted arranged marriage. Yet despite the risk to her safety and freedom, she takes off in pursuit of Oberon once his absence has been detected. Having been forewarned by Shane as to the condition she would find him in, Cassie knew that her skills would be needed to restore his memory. Because of the kind of person Cassie is, she is cautious as to the information she reveals during their time together because she does not wish to unduly influence Oberon. This proves to be a wise choice on her part because as Oberon's memory returns and he comes to realize how she could have taken advantage of his situation, his love for her grows. Oh yes, I said love. As it turns out, Oberon's memory loss ends up being a boon as he got to know Cassie without the memory of Titannia's betrayal coloring their fledgling relationship.
One of the things I enjoy about Bell's writing and this series is that while there is a series thread that is running from book to book, each book is written in such a way that it can be enjoyed as a standalone. While this does good true for The Siren's Song as well, this particular installment will be more enjoyable if the prior books in the series are read first, but at the very least The Hob should be read. Despite how distressing his memory loss was, I found the developing relationship between Oberon and Cassie to be quite heartwarming. Cassie did all that she could to heal Oberon fully expecting her truebond to send her away once his memory was restored. So when his memory returns and he sets out to claim his queen, Cassie is happier than she ever expected to be. At the same time as their bond is being formed, Robin and his Blades are busy uncovering who was responsible for Oberon's condition to begin with. I definitely understood his reaction to the identity of those involved and seriously enjoyed the way he and Robin dispensed punishment. But my favorite part was the formal bonding ceremony and I look forward to seeing Queen Cassandra show the doubters that she is truly Oberon's partner and truebond mate.
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!
There are two ways you could look at this series. You can consider the elements typical to most PNR novels and label it as one. Or, you could look at the humor and the cool references to tv shows and movies and love the series for its wittiness. I chose the latter, which is why I enjoyed reading these books!
What Is It About: Oberon has been poisoned, he has no memory of who he is or where he came from. But when he sees Cassie, he's more than willing to give her his trust and follow her. Cassie knows that Oberon is her true bond and she knows that she must protect him from whoever seeks him harm in his own home. She takes him some place safe where she can heal him with her Siren's song and keep him out of the Dark Queen's control until he is at full strength. Even as his memories come back, he refuses to abandon Cassie. She is in danger as well from her own past.
What I Liked and Didn't: I must admit that none of the plot aspects went where I was expecting any of them to go. I don't know if that's a good thing because the twists were shocking or if it's because I'd expected better things from the plot. The mystery of Oberon's poisioning wasn't as big a part of the plot as the blurb makes it out to be, I'd say that Cassie's past is more important than anything else. I liked the twist with Cassie's brother, it was pretty sweet. The drama with her family took a different turn from what I was expecting. Character-wise, I wasn't too fussed about either of them. I just couldn't imagine what Cassie looked like and her character just came off as a bit meh, no matter how good she was for helping Oberon and Shane in a previous book. I wasn't invested in their relationship, even if they did have a couple of sweet moments. I didn't really care that much about Oberon either, that's why I was a bit cautious about reading this book.
Final Thoughts: I can't deny that Miss Bell is as good as writer as usual with this book but the characters just aren't my favourite. I know that this is personal preference as opposed to the book itself being bad. I'd wondered how Miss Bell would make Oberon an attractive hero and I suppose, for me, she didn't. Would I recommend it? On this book alone, it'd be a maybe. As part of the series, I'd say read it all. Will I be carrying on the series? One book to go and it's Raven's happily ever after, I'm willing to give it a shot.
This is finally Oberon's story and it's a doozy. With one of the most intriguing story openings, it opens with Oberon stumbling down a road with no memory of who he is or who he can trust. We get to reconnect with the usual cast of characters: Robin Goodfellow, the Dunnes, The Blackthornes, the Blades, as well as adding the Mer folk and other sea dwelling species. Every new story in this series (Gray Court) showcases the machinations of the White and Black Courts and very little is what or who they seem. Events just keep getting complicated and twisty and just make me love the story more.
Although you could start with this book (#5), do yourself a favor and start with Dare To Believe (#1). So much happens in each book and so many secrets are slowly revealed over the previous books that you'll enjoy this one so much more if you read them in order. And be prepared to want to reread these books; I'm in the double digits on the previous books and this one has made me hungry to start with #1 and reread them all.
Well this book was definitely not a favorite of the series. I feel that the more I progress into the series the story line and character development kind of just stops.
Princess Cassandra is a siren, a mermaid if you will. She and her younger brother are basically the black sheep of the Atlantian royals. However, where the author failed was explaining why? We got that they aren't as beautiful as the three older sisters but that's about it. She's being forced into an arranged marriage to a family in black court, again why would a family in white court arrange a marriage to a black court family. Especially one who seem to be working with Queen Glorianna to wipe out the black court.
Oberon, High King of the Gray court has helped to save the Hob's mate, and now has been poisoned during his time of weakness and has no memory of who he is. It's up to Cassie to help keep him out of the Black Court's hands. For all his high and mighty attitude he was just rude to everyone, even when he didn't have a memory instead of asking for information of his life from Cassie he demanded it.
The story kept bringing up more questions than giving answers.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley, for an honest review.
SIREN’S SONG is a fast paced read, with well-crafted characters and a well-developed storyline. Dana Marie Bell knows how to tell a story. The High King Oberon of the Gray court has been poisoned and only Cassie can save him with her song. She must find him first, for he has disappeared from the kingdom. Cassie is Princess of the Atlantean court, which is part of the White court. Cassie is also Oberon’s truebond mate. She is currently running from an arranged marriage that her parents had arranged when she was younger. Once Oberon and Cassie become truebond mates, the arranged marriage becomes null and void. This is such a hot and sexy book that it will have you running for a cold shower. SIREN’S SONG has such likeable characters that helps to move the story along. Dana Marie Bell’s novels are great and I cannot wait until the next one. I give this book 5/5 stars. If you have not read her books, I urge you to run out and get one.
Oh Gods, this book was awesome, especially after waiting for this for like a a year!! Now, with their heritage, I wonder what their children would be like, would they be half-fae, half-mer?? one of each? *squeal!!* So happy for Oberon since he finally got a little happiness in his life. Seriously, all that ice and gray is so not good for his complexion, not to mention his health--wait, he's immortal, so I guess that wouldn't matter. Anyway, now its time to wait for Raven next. Its kind of ironic really that its a "like father, like son" kind of thing. Robin has a human as a truebond and Raven will too. Ooohh!!! I did not expec Ravfen to be next. I really though after Oberon its done. But that's a good thing since its not going to end soon and we'll still be seeing a lot of their crazy antics.
Dana Marie Bell has one of the best descriptive writing skills I've read in a long time. Even my very nerdy math geek husband laughed when I read some of the dialogue in this book, and my doctor daughter enjoyed it as well. Although this is a story that is best read in sequence with the other Gray Court novels, it features a heroine with a heart and will stronger than any would expect, even though her appearance doesn't seem to match the beautiful beings in the courts of the fae and other magical beings. I won't spoil the story, but it is one of redemption, healing and a return to laughter for one who has been without for way too long. I highly recommend all of this author's series - they're spicy and serious, with laughter and tears and show how families can consist of all sorts of connections, species and genders.
My only complaint with this book is that in the formatting of the book and within the chapters there are parts and places that skip from one group of characters to the next group but there is no space or mark to show this move. So at first it was confusing but other than this formatting glitch the story line is excellent! I love Cassie and she makes not only a great Queen but a great true bond for Oberon. Oberon in the other books was so untouchable yet very kingly and in this story he felt more normal and touchable which was great. I just love how amazing this series is and how great each book is!
Beautifully written novel. The story keeps the reader in anticipation for what's around the next corner.
This is the story of Oberon and Cassie. Cassie is a siren and Princess of Atlantis. Oberon is fae and King of the Grey Court. Both come together to find each' song after Oberon is poisoned.
Once the king recovers, he'll have to suss the plots within plots to make sure Cassie, his kingdom and those he cares about aren't harm.
This is a excitingly fun book. Not to be missed. Do read the others in the series. There are recurring characters that have stories of their own.
Fantastic new book in the grey court series by Dana Marie Bell.
As stories go this book ticks all my boxes: perfect length -check; great paced story -check; lovable characters -check; humour, romance, plot -check, check and check! The only downside was it had been a while between books so I needed to go back and read the blurb for the previous book to jog my memory. In summary a great read for fans of this genre.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I have waited a long time for this book to come out and I was not disappointed. This book was just as amazing as the others. I loved that Oberon finally gets his Hea. This story was very well written and I just loved absolutely everything about it!
This book seemed somewhat rushed. Even though I was looking forward to Oberon's story, I was rather disappointed that he seemed to just give in quickly to Cassie and the truebond. I think the author could have done a much better job with this story based on previous books both in this series and in her repertoire in general.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Love this series. When does book #6 Never more get released?!? Oberon & Cassie's story. Oberon goes missing, Shane sets Cassie on a mission to find & heal him. but not only do they NOT know who planned on abducting Oberon but Cassie's troubles intermingle.
