The light faded. I found myself sitting on a bench overlooking a park. I was solid again. Although the park had trees and flowers and shrubs, they had a sense of not being alive. I didn’t see any of the usual forest creatures—you know, squirrels, birds and insects—either. Someone coughed next to me. I turned to whoever was there. Beside me on the bench was Mort des Hommes. He looked the same: fit white guy in his sixties in a fine tailored suit, tufts of gray hair peeking underneath his derby hat. His eyes were icy; not necessarily blue, but cold. He looked at me and smiled, his face becoming a ball of wrinkles. I punched him dead in the nose. His head cocked back, and I readied my arm to swing again. But I didn’t. Mort started laughing, and all my anger at him—and at Amie’s death—just went out of me.
Private investigators are pretty interesting to read about, but private investigators who turn into supernatural bounty hunters, are far more appealing…if you like that kind of stuff—that is. In this second installment, Hayes has a resounding supernatural case to solve. There are twelve demons that have been let loose from Hell by Mort des Hommes, the last bad guy from the first book. With Amie by his side and an incredible Pleasant Jinn fighter named Guy, what could go wrong? This should be a piece of cake, right?!
When Guy comes traveling into Seattle to share the bad news about hunting demons, Dick is pretty much against anything that has to do with his previous experience. Amie, the love of his life, has now become human after being a Jinn aide in the last installment. She has turned her back on God, allowing him to have a relationship with her. Guy is a persistent Jinn though, one who will not take no for an answer. He explains that these twelve demons need to be killed and sent back to Hell or the world will know their wreckage. Finally agreeing to go along this trip, they run into the easier demons first—making it actually feel like a walk in the park. But then, it gets harder and harder to fight back as they move from city to city. When he loses Amie to one of the demons, he becomes lost and doesn’t know how to carry on. He forgets what his purpose is and makes Guy haul him along to the next city. All of the corruption and rage slowly starts to take hold of Guy, making it too easy for temptation to alter his perception of the Wicked Jinn side. Can Dick hold it together enough to fight and kill every last demon or will they end his life, allowing him to find his beloved Amie in the afterlife? Can Dick stop Guy from traveling that path of no return?
Hayes provides a certain vibe and writing style that may not appeal to everyone. It is very cut and dry with a hint of sarcasm mixed in. It is also written in first person, which can change the perception a reader has of a book. The creativity and originality are superb, but the character development lacks definition and personality. There are also some hot topics that he delves into involving the seven deadly sins and economic issues. The pace is very quick, but this makes it easy to read as well as its short length. This second installment is written well, with minor errors in grammar and spelling, but this should not hinder understanding or entertainment of the novel. If you are a reader of paranormal or fantasy and crime, you may want to pick this up. This is the second installment and it is recommended for the first book to be read prior to this one; however, it can be read as a standalone, if preferred.
