Private Investigator, Parker Donahue, gets a blast from the past when his ex-girlfriend, Cadence, walks back into his life with an urgent request. It’s been three years since Cadence broke his heart by unceremoniously dumping him. Now, she wants his help in getting her son back after he’s abducted by her ruthless ex-husband. Seeing Cadence again rocks Parker’s world and reignites feelings he’s tried to stuff down over the past few years. Having the love of his life back in his orbit forces him to face the fact that he’s never gotten over her. And he fears he never will.

Three years ago Cadence Johnson sacrificed herself in a bid to save the man she loved from a dangerous threat. Now, with her son kidnapped by her ex-husband, she turns to Parker to help her locate him. Being in Parker’s presence reminds Cadence of everything she lost when she ended things with Parker. But she fears Parker won’t ever truly forgive her for the pain she caused him in the past.

Can Parker and Cadence work through the betrayals of the past and reignite their love story?

GREAT START TO ANOTHER GOOD SERIES

I was glad when this book finally became available. We met Parker in the first Donahue series about the brothers in Cape Cod. These brothers are their cousins and they live in Pelican Bay in Florida. Parker is a private investigator and Cadence is his past love.
Or is it past? Is it really over? He's not so sure when she shows up unexpectedly one night, asking for help finding her son. She says he's the only one she can turn to and he feels himself being sucked in again. He tries to keep his distance while still doing his job for her just as well as he'd do a job for any other paying client.
But she's not just any paying client, and this turns out to be way more than just another job. He's got more invested in this than he realizes.
This was a nice introduction to what I know will be another nice series. I loved the first Donahue series, and this side of the family seems just as boisterous and loving. I know it'll be just as easy to get caught up in their lives. I just have to wait for each book now, which when I read the first series I didn't. They'd all already been published and I hate waiting for next books! But I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait. This has become one of my favorite contemporary authors.

I'm hoping the rest of the series improves, but it seemed to me this second series feels a bit weaker than the original Seven Brides series. I still like how Calhoune gives us a glimpse of a familiar character in an earlier book - in this case the prior series - and brings us step by step closer to that persons love. I liked seeing the PI who helped Mac find his sister finding his true love and the blessings of fatherhood too. At the same time, this series has some tough stuff in it: the parents' looming divorce, an abusive stepfather. The stepfather's story line had power and drama, and then it just drops and fades away. The instant family feels like it didn't really get a chance to build and I missed the romance of it all. Something just wasn't quite right.

This kept me interested til the very end. Cadence and Parker have an interesting story. Upfront were challenges and heartbreak that increased in the interest thin knowing how we could move forward and what would be included in moving forward? Many surprises. Mystery and romance combined.

I felt like I was plodding through this book at times but it was good enough to get me interested in the series so I plan to at least check out the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book and exploring the Parker and Cadence relationship. Such a tough situation they were put in. The entire family seems so strong and supportive of each other. It is a great start to a series and can't wait to read the rest!

Great read!

I loved this book just as much as the others Belle has written. She is able to bring in previous characters but introduce new ones and not take away from the characters that are the focus of the current story.

One of my favorite things about Belle Calhoune’s books are the quotes at the beginning of the chapters, like this one: “Trust in God. Especially during the times when you feel as you’re flying blind. ~ Caleb Donahue”
Another favorite quote is: “but our life is already so incredibly special. I don’t need a dream. Our reality is just as good.” And I love their family motto: Donahue strong!
It’s been fun to read each of 7 brothers’ stories, and to have them all intertwined. They can be read as a stand-alones, but it’s been so much fun to read the entire series and to get to know all of the characters. I’m always anxiously waiting to get the next book!

Breathless: Seven Brides Seven Brothers Pelican Bay Book 1 is written by Belle Calhoune. This is the beginning of a new series of Donahues. It took me some time to figure out that this is not the same as the other series. However, the new series is just as good as the first one. I can hardly wait to get the next book.
Parker Donahue, a PI, is devastated when Cadence breaks up with him just as he is about to propose. He relied mainly on his brother Jason and his PI business to get him through this. Three years later, Cadence returns to his life asking for his help. Her ex-husband has taken her little boy and Cadence needs Parker’s help to get him back. Can he turn her away?

I had two major problems with this book and two things that made the other stuff worth it.

Problems:
First, the plot. Secret baby romances are not fun. They are not fun for the characters, they are not fun for the children, and they are not fun for the reader. To each their own. Some people may like them; I do not. Second, Cadence is a horrible, lying, two-faced idiot. She spends half this book lying and the other half scared to death of everyone around her. Too scared to tell Parker his best friend was killed by her new fiancé, too scared to tell him she's pregnant, too scared to tell him she's going to exchange herself for Logan (total cop out by the way having the Feds come in and save her right when it was starting to get interesting), and the rest of the time scared to do just about anything else.

The Good Stuff:
First, the characters (sans Cadence) were amazing. I love big family dynamics and strong sibling bonds. I love when families do not immediately start hissy-fits over bad news. These guys are strong, and that is amazing. Secondly, it was short, which made it a decent pace for what was actually in the book. It is a very basic plot with basic characters; a definite popcorn novel. However, it worked. I hope these good attributes will last through the rest of the series. I figure I'll like the next books a lot more once I'm not having to put up with Cadence half the time.

Amazing author. Love her series.

This author keeps it real and honest. She paints a great picture in her books. Having lived in Savannah I really appreciated how she described the beauty that exist but also some of the challenges of living in a traditional southern city.
