This was nice, short story, I wouldn't call it a novella since it continues on in the series but it was a quick and pleasant read
Gabriel's family and the Cunningham's have hated each other for more than 30 years and it's not Gabriel's job to continue to take vengeance. And when he discovered that The son of his father's enemy is getting married to the beautiful and intelligent Evelyn, he plans to win her over and to take the upper hand in the fued, but what he didn't take into account was the feelings he developed once he did got to know Evelyn.
Evelyn is a simple girl, happy and all smiles to everyone, but that's only her facade. In reality she is angry with her parents for arranging her marriage to the Duke Richard Cunningham, only for money. She knows she will never love the man and her life will be a prison, but soon she finds hope in the presence of the handsome Duke Gabriel. He seems to be interested and values her intelligence and her opinions, things that not even her betrothed seems to care about. But will she accept him when she finds out his real intentions to pursue her ?
Gabriel and Evelyn started off pretty well but once Evelyn found out she was just a pawn in his game for revenge, she was mad. But what she didn't know that even if his first intentions were to get revenge, after their first meeting, he began to care for her
This was a wonderful novel, will definitely keep reading the rest of the series to see how it will all turn out for these families

Malgré une intrigue intéressante, on reste sur sa faim. Il n'y a pas beaucoup de dialogue ni trop d'action. C'est même un peu trop rapide et du coup peu vraisemblable. Cependant, Bridget Barton réussi à nous donner envie de suivre les aventures de ces deux familles ennemies.

A feud leads to love
Gabriel Farrington is motivated to fulfill his dead father's last wish and continue the feud with the rival Cunningham family. When he catches sight of Evelyn, the lovely fiance of the Cunningham scion, he hatches a plan to steal her for himself. What he doesn't plan on is falling in love with her.
Although Evelyn has a lot of moxie and decides that she will refuse to be a pawn of her family, the story has several unfortunate gaping holes. For instance, Evelyn had been engaged to Richard Cunningham in exchange for a large settlement to her family. This seems completely opposite how marriages are typically arranged in this time period. Why would a future duke need to purchase a bride in such a way? You'd think that eligible heiresses would be lining up for the chance to be the next duchess, even if Richard wasn't particularly handsome or engaging. Then, when Gabriel steals her away there isn't a single word about what happens with her family. Despite the lack of logic, Gabriel and Evelyn make a good couple. The true villains appear to be Prudence, the Duchess of Horndean, and her oldest daughter Eleanora, poor, jilted Richard seems to be as much a victim as Evelyn. I'll probably read more to find out what really happened to start the feud.

Revenge seems to be the word of the day for this guy, even going as far as to steal away his adversary’s fiancee, but, when he came face to face with the said Evelyn, another battle ensued raging out of control and this one was more potent and life-threatening than that of his long-standing feud with Richard Cunningham. Gabriel soon realized what was at stake, because now he thirsts for something far more greater than revenge, now he thirsts for Evelyn in all the ways possible, he wanted her deeply and permanently, now the battle has truly begun, the battle to get to the forever junction. Destroying Richard Cunningham was the name of the game but he soon realized he was playing for far greater stakes, for love knows no boundaries and takes no prisoners.

I really liked this book. I wish it was a bit longer. It left a lot of questions unanswered and seemed unfinished but I guess that's what the sequel is for.

This book started out kinda slow for me in the beginning and then it became intriguing. It's the story of two families, Duke dynasties, if you will - feuding it out!
Gabriel just lost his father (Wentworth Farrington), becoming the new Duke of Calgarth; and basically his father's last words were, keep the feud going and take it up a notch! Of course, that's not exactly what he said; but it boiled down to that. Their enemies are the Cunninghams, and this all started because Cornelius Cunningham jilted Verity Farrington, the beloved sister of Wentworth. This happened a few weeks before their wedding and she was devastated to the point that she hung herself on the eve of Cornelius and Prudence's wedding. Wentworth and Cornelius had been best friends since their school days and the misunderstanding began at the jilting and hatred began at the death of Verity. Wentworth vowed to avenge his sister as long as he lived and in the next life too! His four son's were entrusted to keep the feud alive, period!
Fast forward to another wedding in the town where Gabriel sees a beautiful woman near his near-in-age nemesis Richard Cunningham. He sees that she isn't into Richard, but is smiling and acting as though she is attentive to him. Gabriel, being able to read people well realizes that this woman is the ticket to his next plan against the Cunningham's! He finds out that Lady Evelyn is more than a pretty face; soon Lady Evelyn uncovers the plan and wants to be nobody's pawn. Her parents have basically sold her into this marriage with the Cunningham's to aid themselves in revitalizing the Earldom, the Cunningham family plan to use and control her, and now Gabriel wants to use her against Richard! Even her second cousin had a hand in involving her in this feud.
I must admit, I wouldn't want to handle this situation. Evelyn decides if she is to be a pawn she will decide which camp she is joining. She makes her feelings known in a climate that doesn't care about women or their feelings, and admits she knows the stakes, and will deal with them on her terms!
I liked that ! ! ! We may not know what cards we're being dealt, but it is still up to us to play them! Even in situations where we don't feel like we have power, we have perspective -- and that can sometimes alter our course!

What could have been a lovely, sweet love story was completely and thoroughly massacred by the crude first coupling of the Duke and his innocent Lady. It seems that the innocent is so aroused by her first kiss that in short order both she and he strip naked in the drawing room of a friend's house, go at it and quickly redress - Romantic, huh? Something like two animals in heat meeting while walking in the woods, co-join, relieve themselves and then, nonchalantly, continue on their walk. What a wonderful way for an innocent to be introduced to the world of sex (I cannot call it lovemaking, because it was most certainly not that) and then, suddenly deciding that riding off and eloping would solve their problem, they do just that.
Would it not have read better if they had decided to elope first, hopped onto their horses, secured a place to wed, did so, THEN, found a lovely little inn and in a warm and comfy little chamber therein, the Duke, slowly, gently and patiently introduces his innocent bride into the wonderful world of lovemaking, and after cleaving one to the other, entwine themselves and sleep a beautiful first night of their life together. Now, that's romance. Something Ms. Barton has little knowledge of.
I fear that I will NEVER pick up another book written by Bridget Barton. If anyone could kill the idea of love and romance, she does it well and I don't think I would like to encourage her writing of another massacre by reading more of her books.

Underwhelming Read - minor spoiler
I had hoped this book would be better, especially since its the start of a series, but it left a lot to be desired. The premise could have been interesting, but the whole plot was left vague and with little detail. The dialogue was clumsy and seemed forced. The characters are flat and honestly not very believable - I find it very hard to believe that Evelyn would immediately have sex after her first kiss with Gabriel - no matter how much she's 'taking control of her life', her background and character do not match such an action (or even Gabriel's to be honest). This was the last chance I was giving to Bridget Barton - and unfortunately she didn't win me over - I feel like, despite good reviews, I'm reading something different than everyone else raving about her.

A good plot but being a short story of only around 100 pages, the story would have been improved with less description and more story. I also found it repetitive. When we were in the heads of our H/h their thoughts would repeat, often within a couple paragraphs of the original thought. Also the descriptions were a little too descriptive. I didn't need to know about every flounce on the dress in minute detail, or every wall, curtain, and border color of a room. If more had gone into the story development and less into the descriptors maybe the love story aspect of the book would not have felt quite so rushed. All that being said I still enjoyed the story enough to give it 3 stars.

Let me start by saying that there is nothing horribly wrong with the book. The problem, for me, is that it is too short. There's not enough time to build the world in which these characters live. I felt that these characters had not been developed to its fullest potential. It felt too rushed, a problem that may be considered normal in the short story/novella world. I personally would take this manuscript and make a longer novel out of it. Bridget Barton has the skills. No question about that! While this novella is good, it could have been a lot stronger.

Recency Romance: Recency Fire: A Historical Regency Romance Series...
Absolutely fantastic storyline. Great characters, one thing that stuck out was the name Evelyn, I have never run into that name before in all my years of reading.
At the end, I felt l read a book of worth in historical knowledge.

A fast-moving (and by that I mean really short) superficial story fraught with errors such as using the word "taughten" (actually, no such word) when it should have been tauten or, when speaking to a duke in a society setting, addressing him as "Duke" rather than "your grace".

Very poorly written. It's hard to get into because the author tries so hard to use "regency language" and instead of being immersive it's distracting. It was almost impossible to feel anything for anyone in the story.

The writing isn't great and the "love" scenes are very forced. It's like the more intimate scenes are there to fill and audience want rather than enhancing the storyline.

A young woman is about to marry a man she does not desire and does not know how to get out of it. She meets his cousin and falls in love. The day of the wedding they run off together and get married. This is a great love story. I just loved it and I recommend it.

Enchanting
I really enjoyed this book and certainly was all for the heroine to have her own desires met in the life she wanted to lead.
